Shoparoo – A Way to Help OUR Schools!
Dear Jersey 100 Family and Friends. I was fortunate to hear from a parent, Mrs. Deanna
Loepker, who shared this news with me.
Partnering with Shoparoo to leverage their hassle-free
approach to raising thousands of dollars for Jersey District 100
is a great idea. 7,000+ schools are already collecting funds
through Shoparoo and we see it as great opportunity for us to make a difference this year.
With the free Shoparoo app, all you have to do to raise money for our school is take pictures
of your grocery receipts with your phone! No solicitation required. Shoparoo does not require
any buying, selling, collecting, delivering, etcetera… and, it works no matter where you shop or
what you buy! No solicitation – period!
Yes, it really is that easy. The school you select will receive a donation for every grocery
receipt picture taken through the free Shoparoo app. There is no limit to how much can be
raised with Shoparoo, so please download the app and started taking pictures today. Here’s
what you do:
1. Download the free Shoparoo app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
2. Once it’s downloaded, select our school as your cause and take pictures of receipts!
3. Invite other parents and members of the community to participate in this simple
program.
Thanks for helping Jersey 100. As always, we greatly appreciate your support! 
Grafton Elementary Teachers Promote Reading in a Special Way
Grafton teachers rocked their recent Family Reading
Night. Many enjoyed a great night that featured a
teacher play and various stations where the kids
participated in reading activities.
Pictured from
left to right are
Mrs. Medford,
Ms. Beauchamp,
Mrs. Allen, Mrs.
Pohlman, Mrs,
Smith, and Mrs. Lumma, all of who took part in a play
based on the book The Three Javelinas. After the play,
teachers ran stations that featured activities based on
the theme Fiesta! Activities included making a sombrero,
reading a Skippyjon Jones book, learning Spanish words, and doing the Mexican Hat Dance. A
fun night was had by all! Thank you to all who played a part!
Also, a big thank you goes out to National Honor Society students who helped out! Alexis
DeSherlia, Caitlin Critchfield, and Jarrick Lumma assisted, which definitely added to the success
of the
event.
West Teachers JUST BEING JERSEY!
This is an email shared with me from Mr. Jon Baumberger, West Elementary principal…
We have a parent who has three children attending West Elementary. Each child is unique in
his or her own way and each child requires some extra effort from our teachers. The teachers
who have this individual's children have gone above and beyond what is required of them. In
my observations of these teachers, it is very evident that they treat these children as if they
were their own and have a genuine interest in their lives.
Recently, the mother of these children wrote us an email and had this to say about the
teachers here: "Thank you for being so supportive of myself and my girls. You all make my job
as a parent so much easier when I know they are in loving, compassionate hands when they
aren’t in mine. From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU!!"
This is a wonderful reflection of our entire district. Thank you, West Elementary teacher, for all
you do to enhance learning, build relationships, and promote compassion and kindness! Thank
you for JUST BEING JERSEY!
Teamwork Comes in All Forms… Thank YOU for JUST BEING JERSEY!
Included are a few pictures of Mrs.
Burney’s fifth grade class working
with Mrs. Siemer's kindergarten
class. They have been walking to
West once a month to work on
projects and read with the
kindergartners. Each month, the
students sit shoulder to shoulder as the kindergartners show off their reading skills. The little
ones just beam as the fifth graders praise them as they read. What a great way for both
classes to learn the value of
helping and working with
others. What a wonderful
learning opportunity for all!
Promoting Good Health
Mrs. Christine Smith shared information on Kick Butts Day at the high school. Occurring March
19th during the high school lunch hours, she said it was another success and the students were
a great help and enjoyed themselves. More pics will be coming soon. The students made a
presentation board, “They put WHAT in a cigarette.” The Health Department will be using this
board when visiting schools and health fairs. They are awesome kids! Thank you, Mrs. Smith!
East Elementary Students Get Motivated
Nine East Elementary Students participated
in the Read, Right and Run Race as part of
the 2014 GO! St. Louis Marathon & Fitness
Weekend.
The program’s goal is to develop readingproficient, community-minded and physically
fit children by challenging them toREAD 26
books, RIGHT the community with 26 good
deeds, and RUN 26.2 miles over a six-month
period. Students received a colorful activity
journal that was a great resource for physical fitness and nutrition information, while
encouraging them to become a better community citizen. After weeks of hard work, the
program culminated with the students running their final 1.2 miles at the Annual Family Day in
Forest Park on Saturday, April 5th.The Read, Right & Run Marathon® is a registered event of
GO! St. Louis. Thank you, Mrs. Jen Rogers for encouraging and motivating East kids!

Illini Demonstrates Excellence
The Illini Middle School 7th Grade Band participated in the IGSMA (Illinois Grade School Music
Association) Organizational Band Contest recently at East Alton Middle School. Our students
received a rating of a 1st, which is considered an excellent performance. We received a 1st
Superior from one of the three judges with a near perfect score. I am very proud of the 7th
grade students, especially when you consider that almost all of the 7th grade students started
playing an instrument as 6th graders only a year and a half ago. Most of the other bands at
contest included 8th grade students that started band as early as 4th grade. Only one band
scored higher than we did.
Building Entrepreneurs
M M rs .
Mrs. Woelfel’s Entrepreneur
class participated in a
number of class projects that
increased their knowledge
and skills in the area of
business, finance and what
else? Entrepreneurism! Our
leaders are growing!
Rockin’ and Readin’ at East Elementary
I had the pleasure of visiting Mrs. Martinez’
room at East Elementary to read to her fabulous
students. The story I selected was “Our
Marching Band.” I wanted to inspire children to
think about playing a musical instrument. I tell
kids often that having the ability to play an
instrument is like being able to speak another
language. 
Of
course, following the book reading, I played my
guitar and sang a song about being thankful for our
veterans! We had a wonderful time. I then made my
way downstairs and glanced into Mrs. Smay’s room.
It was nice seeing and visiting with the kids again. I
got out my guitar and sang the same song: being
thankful for our veterans. Mrs. Smay shared pictures
of her son, all dressed up in military utilities. She
shared stories about her son’s military experience and how he missed out on the birth of his
son and some of his “growing up” time because he was protecting ours. I continue to be
thankful for those who serve and protect so we get so many opportunities!
Our AMAZING Students!
Mrs. Bidlack stands with our Jersey
100 Spelling Bee winner, Josie LaPlant.
She stopped in at the District Office to
share her success. We are very proud!
When visiting Mrs. Martinez’ class at
East Elementary, one student, Riyhlie
Hale asked if she could share with her
class and me a new song she recently
wrote. Of course, she hit it out of the
park! These students have
demonstrated confidence and
commitment to their cause, both
showing that it’s COOL to stand out
and be noticed!
Future Farmers of America Banquet
Congratulations to all who played a
part in the FFA banquet. It was a
wonderful evening – a great meal
followed by an impressive ceremony.
Congratulations to all seniors who passed the
baton to their younger peers. Thank you, Mr.
Goetten and Miss Kates for all you do to make
the program ROCK!
Paving the Way…
Mr. Keith Beisman, former Calhoun High School graduate who now serves as Director of
Science and Instructional Technology at J.
Sterling Morton High School District 201
visited Jersey Community High School to talk
with the pros on how to successfully move a
high school to a one-to-one digital
environment. I can’t express my gratitude to
all of you who offered advice and
encouragement to Mr. Beisman: Mr.
Norman, Mr. Churchman, Mrs. Brown, Miss
Kolkmeyer, Mrs. Fessler, Mrs. Hamilton, Mrs.
Morgan, Mrs. Lakin, Mrs. Robinson, Mrs.
Breden, and Mr. Diamond. Thank you ALL for taking time out to help a colleague. I am very
grateful!
How Cool is This!
A BIG congratulations goes out to Miss Tia Scheffel and Mr. Gary Watson. These students
gained admission to the United Air Force Academy and United States Naval Academy
respectively. Students who are selected are found to exemplify academic excellence,
demonstrate commitment to school athletics and activities, and illustrate leadership qualities.
What an outstanding accomplishment to have two students appointed from our 2014
graduating class. Miss Scheffel and Mr. Watson are pictured above with their parents, military
branch representatives, and Congressman Rodney Davis.
Tweeting the TRUTH!
I can’t tell you how many times I have preached to my own kids
about being positive. I no longer have to remind them of my words:
“If you don’t have anything nice to say, say nothing at all.” I do my
very best to live by these words. Turn on the news, flip open the
paper, read through Facebook – WOW! Please tell me… “Is
anything good happening around me?” The answer – YES! This is
why I’m so proud of this student. I learned recently that her Tweet
about our recent cuts cut right to the point. She wrote - “[They]
didn’t cut because they wanted to, they cut because they had to.”
Thank you, Ashton, for speaking out and keeping it positive! I
appreciate your voice, your smile, and your optimism! 
Customer Service and Patriotism at its Best!
…which leads me to my last picture…
This student had greeted me at the McDonald’s drive
through at my last two visits. Each time, he has
extended his hand to say THANK YOU. The first time
this happened, I was puzzled by his actions. His reply
– “I want to shake your hand and say THANK YOU for
serving our country.”
I was surprised, as his actions were much unexpected.
While I am so proud to have served in the United
States Marine Corps, my stint in the service was not
during a time of conflict. I didn’t face the enemy and I didn’t save a life. I did,
though, come to realize how important the
Marine Corps motto was then, and I continue
to live by the words I heard back in the day
again and again: Semper Fi! - Otherwise known
as Semper Fidelis, it means “Always faithful,
faithful to yourself, your Corps, your country,
and your God.” I’m not sure I truly bought into
those words as an eighteen-year-old Marine,
but I certainly remain committed to the
standard today.
This young man models what is seen in the hearts of
our young people in our schools and community.
They embody patriotism and show a love for their
country and respect for those who have served
more than any other. It’s one of the many reasons
why I feel blessed to be the Jersey 100
superintendent.  God Bless America!
