They have been in business for
three years and will own their new
location. Wade is also a middle
school math teacher. They have
three sons: Riley, 16, Seth, 10,
and Davis, 9.

students to a school in Portland,
Ore., to study English intensively
and experience American culture.

is a stay-at-home mom and home

recently moved back to Colorado
Springs with her husband, John,
and children, Jenna, 7, and

for her guests.

have moved back to South Africa
after pastoring in New Zealand
and America. John Paul is
assisting in the family business,

this summer to coach the Muslim
elite volleyball athletes and
coaches. It was a mission trip with
So. Cal. Fellowship of Christian
Athletes. The goal of this trip
was not only to coach volleyball,
but to teach the children and
teens about vision, endurance,
teamwork, and effort.
Brent Card (00) owns and
manages a real estate
development company with his
wife, Sarah. They live in Montana

Dr. Bob Sutton (68) is serving
as the chief historian of the
National Park Service, one of
the most prestigious historian
positions in the federal
government.
As a child, Bob listened in
fascination to his grandparents
tell stories of their journey
west on the Oregon Trail. In
junior high, he devoured
every book he could find on
westward expansion. After
graduate school, Bob became
a historian for the Oregon
Bob says that his role as chief
historian of the National Park
Service is “to present accurate
and compelling stories of the
parks so that people will be
attracted to them.” He is most
proud of the park service’s
recent efforts to create historical
programs that tie directly into
school curriculum.
“This is the most important thing
we could do, to bring every
child through as part of their
educational experience. This
way the next generation will be
passionate about our history.”

CRAIG SLIKE: “THE MOLE”
Every few years, Craig Slike (00)
steps out on a limb and does
something adventurous. But until
recently, none of his adventures
were on network television.
This summer, Craig appeared
on ABC’s “The Mole,” a spythemed reality TV show that
has everyone guessing which
contestant the producers have
secretly hired to work against the
others. Before
the show
began taping
the season’s
10 episodes,
producers
met with each
of the 12
contestants to
ask them how
they would
behave as the mole. They liked
Craig’s strategy. He accepted
their offer to play the mole,
forfeiting a chance at the prize
money but earning a guaranteed
important role in the show, as
well as an undisclosed salary.
As the mole, Craig worked with
the producers to receive secret
instructions and to keep the
others fooled. Craig kept his
saboteur role hidden by simply
being himself.
a waterfall and bungee jumped
off a bridge.
“The only thing I lied about
was whether or not I was the
mole, and even then I preferred
misdirection to lies,” said Craig.
“I was stretched and grew in ways
that I didn’t know I needed to,”
he said.
The other contestants saw
Craig as genuine, friendly, and
funny. Since they liked and
respected him so much, few
suspected his secret.
Besides making some new
friends, Craig’s favorite part
was the challenge. He is
proud of finishing a hike up a
mountain in freezing weather,
even though it landed him in
an ambulance. And he wasn’t
quite aware of his fear of
heights until he plummeted off
Craig took another leap in his life
to be on the show. He had to quit
his graphic design job in order to
spend two months taping the show
in South America. Craig’s newest
adventure is as an entrepreneur.
Since returning, he has been
working with Joel Kordyak (02)
to build a full-service advertising
agency called The Agency San
Diego. Craig created The Agency
five years ago as a part-time
project for charity. Now he’s using
the same tenacity and people
skills he did on “The Mole” to grow
it into a successful business.

IN MEMORIAM
Robert Copeland Hughes
(pref. 43) passed away Dec. 10,
2007. He met his wife Wanda
(Jones) (pref. 43) while attending
Pasadena College. They cofounded KUBB Country radio,
which began broadcasting in
1977. He loved fellowship with
members of his church and was
the music director for the Merced
and, later, the Atwater Church of
the Nazarene. Robert was an avid
airplane pilot and a member of the
Land Improvement Contractors of
America (LICA). He is survived by
his sons, Charles and Jeff; sister,
Anna (Hughes) (45) Wardrobe;
four grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren.
Charles Means Crouch (38)
passed away June 1, 2008. He
was in the Calif. National Guard
for 26 years and the Calif. State
Military Reserve. He received
a bronze star during WWII and
retired from military service
in 1975 as a Lt. Colonel. Rev.
Crouch was active on the Central
Calif. District and served as
district secretary, district chairman
of Sunday school ministries, and
children’s camp director and
chaplain. His ministry and kind
heart touched many lives. He is
survived by his wife, Florence H.
(Crossley) (38); three daughters,
Evelyn (Crouch) (61) Ovando,
Esther (Crouch) (68) Sluder,
and Margaret (Crouch) (70)
VanDerworp; seven grandchildren;
10 great-grandchildren; and
brother, Bob Crouch.
Annie (Scharer) (Morrison)
(31) Arms passed away June
29, 2008, at the age of 98. She
received her B.A. degree from
Pasadena College and later

earned a master’s degree from
USC. Annie married Monroe
Scott Arms in 1954. In 1984,
Arms Hall at Pasadena 1st
Church of the Nazarene was
dedicated to Monroe and Annie.
Monroe passed away in 1985.
Annie was organizational chair
and first president of Pasadena
College/PLNU Women’s
Auxiliary 1967-71 and served
on the executive committee until
1984. She is survived by her
son, Rockwell Scharer, Jr.; two
stepdaughters, Wilma Clark and
Rosalie Judd; one stepson, Willis
Arms; 10 grandchildren; and 14
great-grandchildren.
Roy A. Bevan (50) passed away
May 11, 2008. Chaplain Bevan
was Captain, Chaplain Corps,
United States Navy (Ret.). He was
an active member of the Largo
Wesleyan Church. Roy earned
his B.A. from Pasadena College
and his B.D. from Nazarene
Theological Seminary in Kansas
City, Mo. He received the Alumni
Association’s Distinguished
Achievement Award in 1976. His
wife, Lucie, passed away in 2004.
He is survived by his daughter,
Shirley Utterback; sons, John and
James Bevan; four grandchildren;
and one great-grandchild.
Tod (90) & Stephanie (Coleman)
(pref. 90) McFarland lost their
lives in a car accident July 3,
2008. The couple married in 1994
after meeting at Point Loma. They
were loving parents to their three
children Ian, 5, Lauren, 3, and
Luke, 2. Tod was a fervent rock
climber, surfer, skateboarder,
fly-fisherman, gourmet cook,
and lover of life. He scaled Mt.
Shasta, journeyed to Mammoth
often to snowboard, and loved
camping with his family. Tod
completed his master’s degree
in physical therapy at the Univ.
of the Pacific. Stephanie was
an assistant branch manager
at Washington Mutual Bank.
The most important goal in her
life, which she accomplished,
was to set a firm foundation for
her family. She shared Tod’s
enthusiasm and joined him and
the kids on their adventures.
Stephanie had a deep love for her
friends and family. Stephanie and
Tod are survived by their three
children, Stephanie’s mother and
father, Tom and Cheryl Coleman;
sisters, Christina, Melissa, and
Sarah, and their families; and
Tod’s mother, Violet McFarland;
and brother, Shjon McFarland
(91). The families of Tod and
Stephanie would like to thank the
PLNU alumni for your love and
support. To provide assistance
for Tod and Stephanie’s children,
the McFarland Memorial Fund
has been established through
Washington Mutual Bank.
Frank A. Clouse (53) passed
away July 16, 2008. For the past
three years, he bravely battled
cancer. He gave his heart and life
to the Lord and walked faithfully
as a man of God throughout
his life. He stayed true. Frank
married his Pasadena College
sweetheart and love of his life,
Leah Jean (Wild) (pref. 55) in
1954. Frank and Leah spent
the majority of their married life
in northern Calif. Frank was a
minister in the Church of the
Nazarene for eight years. He
had a particular love for the
outdoors and spent many hours
camping, backpacking, golfing,
and gardening. In his last days,
he enjoyed watching his boys
work on an ongoing gardening
project that he had started, but
was unable to complete. These
concluding days were filled with
love, stories, hugs, and memories
of good times. Frank is survived
by Leah; sister, Billie Pearl
Clouse Brewer; three children,
David (79), Daniel (pref. 80),
and Patricia Friesen; and four
grandchildren, Joshua Friesen,
Bethany Friesen (05), Matthew
Clouse, and Michael Clouse (08).
Ralph Benjamin Steelhead (52)
passed away June 29,2008. Ben
grew up in Santa Barbara, Calif.,
where he developed his love for
the ocean. In high school, he
was recruited to play running
back at the Univ. of Idaho. After
completing his service in the
Navy, Ben attended Pasadena
College. There he met the love of
his life, Phyllis (McDowell) (pref.
66). Soon after they married,
Ben took his first teaching job in
Fresno, Calif. Along with teaching
and coaching, he went on to
receive his master’s from USC.
Ben won many body building
titles, including “Mr. Pacific
Coast over 40.” Soon after his
retirement, Ben received the
Salvation Army “Others” Award
for his service and dedication
to his community. He devoted
much time to the Bill Blass Prison
Ministries and led over a hundred
inmates to Christ. He is survived
by his son, Ben (76); daughter
and son-in-law, Susan and Dan;
and three grandchildren.
WILLO MAY BERESFORD
Willo May Beresford made
beautiful music in the
Pasadena and Point Loma
community for almost 60 years
until her passing on July 9
at the age of 91. She began
her college teaching career
at her alma mater, Bethany
Peniel College (now Southern
Nazarene University), even
before receiving a master’s
degree at Oklahoma University.
In 1948, she and her husband,
Dan, moved to Pasadena
and began a long relationship
with PLNU. When the college
moved in 1973, Willo May
and her family had already
lived in the L.A. region for
20 years; nonetheless, they
made the move to San Diego.
Willo May retired in 1992 but
remained active in the campus
community and at San Diego
First Church of the Nazarene.
In addition to her long career
as a professor, she taught
private lessons and led
worship. She first played the
piano in church at age 12 and
continued to serve as a church
pianist or organist for worship
services, weddings, and
funerals right up to the weeks
preceding her death.
Announcing the news of Willo
May’s passing, President
Brower said, “The music she
generated through her gifts
was equaled by her influence
upon students, the church, and
friends.” She was loved and
appreciated for her genuine
kindness, her smile, wit, and
constancy. God has used her
life as a testimony of faithful
Kingdom service. Undoubtedly,
this witness has touched the
lives of thousands as they
have had the pleasure of
knowing her, making music
with her, and worshipping
together over the years.
Beryl Pagan, student, friend,
and neighbor of Willo May,
said, “She just loved being with
her friends – and her students
were her friends. She loved
keeping in contact with them,
treasured every card and letter,
and prayed continually and
without ceasing for them as
they came to mind.”
