HIGHLIGHTS IN THIS ISSUE
This is our last newsletter for Term 3 and what a busy
fortnight it has been. This culminated yesterday with the
Year 12, 2013 Graduation Day. A huge thankyou to Ms
Rhiannon Sharp for all her hard work organising the
Graduation Assembly which was thoroughly enjoyed by the
students their guests and teachers.

YEAR 12 GRADUATION DAY
MAJOR AWARDS
SCHOOL MEDAL
The prestigious School Medal was presented to Owen
Cannings for his representation of the school in sport
(swimming and lawn bowls), and for his efforts in the Illawarra
and South East Regional Performing Ensemble playing
trombone in the stage band on tour and in the orchestra for
Southern Stars for three years.
Owen is the 2013 recipient of a Roads and Maritime Services
Scholarship – Engineering, a fantastic achievement
recognising Owen’s wide ranging academic successes. In 2013
Owen also received the prestigious Nanga Mai Award for
Outstanding Achievement in Performing, Creative and Visual
Arts.
Owen was truly a worthy recipient of the Woonona High
School Medal for 2013.
THE LONG TAN LEADERSHIP AND TEAM WORK AWARD
This award was presented to Dean Cambourn. It is
awarded for Leadership, Resourcefulness, Teamwork,
Communication, Values, Cooperation, Problem Solving
and Community Involvement.
Dean is a long term elected member of Woonona High
School’s SRC and our 2013 School Captain. His
achievements, passion and abilities were recognised by
election to the Regional and State SRC in 2012. Dean
embraced this responsibility with maturity, dedication and
energy.
Dean was a very worthy recipient of the Year 12 Long Tan
Award for 2013.
The J.N. Webster Trophy for service to the school was
presented to Dean Cambourn and Tiana Stevens our school
captains for 2013. Thomas O’Brian, Tara Bain (Vice Captains)
and Renee Schwarze and Taryn Yates (SRC Secretaries) were
presented with the Woonona Lions Club Awards for service
to the school.
The Principal’s Awards for the School Merit Award System
were presented to Madelaine Baker, Owen Cannings,
Anthony Dreizi, Isabel Napier and Kathryn Rowney.
Kathry Rowney received the Most Conscientious Student
Award.

Committee Pierre de Coubertin Award for Sporting
Achievements.
The Woonona High School Sportswoman of the Year Award
was presented to Molly Dugan.
High Academic Achievement Awards were presented to

Brittany Weir

The presentation of the Outstanding Academic Achievement
Awards were presented to Izak Lucas-Parr and Renee
Schwarze.

YEAR 12 CLASS OF 2013
With
the end of year 12’s timetabled lessons fast
approaching, and the long anticipated HSC examinations
approaching, Year 12 have should be busy studying and
revising work related to their coursework. It is a time of
reflection for students as they look back on what has been
and toward what is to come. I also have that same nostalgic
feeling as I consider the successes and trials of navigating
such a special group of young people through the formative
years of their lives. It is my hope that they leave Woonona
High school with an inate ability to achieve and adapt to
whatever endeavours they pursue. I look forward to hearing
stories down the track of how everyone is going. I would also
like to take this opportunity to thank you, the parents, for
entrusting your children to us here at Woonona for the last
six years.
Some important dates and times to remember:
17th September – Last day of timetabled lessons for year 12
18th September – Celebration day: A pancake breakfast will
be held in senior quad for year 12 students and their
teachers to say farewell, before heading to Stuart Park for
sporting activities, BBQ and music. The day will finish at 1pm
19th September – Graduation Day: Students need to be in
the school hall at 9am for rehearsal. The ceremony will begin
at 10:30am sharp and is anticipated to finish at
approximately 12 noon when students can take photos on
the front lawn and parents and guests can enjoy light
refreshments. Students need to be in full school uniform.
14thOctober HSC begins – All students except those studying
an alternate pathway to the HSC (WRAP) attend. To see the

THANKYOU MR BRADLEY
Year 12 would like to say a big thankyou to Mr Bradley for
being a fantastic Year Adviser this year. Year 12 really
appreciates all the hard work and effort that went into
organising special events (Celebration day, brekky, the formal
etc), organising school jackets, for keeping students and
parents informed of Year 12 requirements and for helping
Year 12 enjoy their last year of school.
COS SPORTS DAY
On Thursday 12th September, Primary Schools from across the
local area collaborated for a sports day at Woonona High
School. The event, organised by the community transition
team, was prepared to encourage connections between local
students.
Year 5 and 6 students from Woonona, Woonona East and
Russell Vale Primary united with Year 7 Students from Woonona High School. Students then played in activities lead by the
WHS year 10 Physical Activity and Sports Science team. The
recreations included Quidditch, Soccer, Basketball, Dodgeball
and Aerial Circus Skills.
While the day was centred towards sporting activities, the
long lasting fulfilment came from the friendships and networks students made. The Community of Schools experiences,
along with Peer Support programs aim to provide an efficient
transition from the local primary schools to Woonona High
School.
A special thanks to Amy Packer, who has been the forerunner
of many of the transition experiences.

YEAR 11 REPORT
The end of Term 3 marks the end of the Preliminary Course
for Year 11 students, who have recently completed their final
examinations. Reports will be issued early next term. I would
like to commend Year 11 for their hard work this year and
look forward to working with them as Year 12 students next
term and year. 2014 SRC Executive elections were held
recently and I was delighted to announce the results this
week at the Year 12 Graduation Ceremony. We were
fortunate to have 8 strong candidates run for office and their
speeches were all passionate and entertaining. The successful

BOORI (MONTY) PRIOR ABORIGINAL AUTHOR VISIT
NAIDOC PUBLIC SPEAKING AND DEBATING DAY
On Friday 6th of September year 8 and the ATSI students
from Woonona High attended an Aboriginal Story telling
workshop. The workshop was presented by Boori (Monty)
Prior. Monty Prior is a multi-talented performer who has
worked in numerous industries including film, television,
modelling, sport, music and education. He is known as an
articulate public speaker on Aboriginal issues. The workshop
gave a first hand account of Aboriginal life, both traditional
and contemporary.
On Monday 9th September four students travelled to
Tarrawanna Public School to participate in the inaugural
NAIDOC Public Speaking and Debating day. Primary school
students were asked to present prepared speeches whilst
high schools students were asked to prepare for either the
affirmative or negative side in a debate on "Should
Aboriginal people have more say over Crown land - mining
rights?"
Teams were made up of a balance of Indigenous and nonindigenous students. From Year 8, Kaitlyn Smith and Jasmin
Wilson represented our Aboriginal students whilst Chloe
Jackson and Shania Everson from Year 9 represented our non
-Aboriginal students. ………………………………..

WOONONA HIGH SCHOOL LEADS THE WAY
On Monday 26th August student leaders from six local high
schools participated in a leadership workshop held at
Woonona High School in the library. The day was wellattended by students from Bulli High School, Corrimal High
School, Kiera High School, Wollongong High School of the
Performing Arts, Smiths Hill High School as well as
Woonona.
This was a student-run initiative, led by the school’s SRC
leaders. Tiana Stevens, our outgoing school captain, was
largely responsible for the organization on the day. Tiana
said, “We wanted to give back to the community, and pass
on to upcoming Year 10 school leaders some of the things
we have learnt.”…………………………………………………………………..
Students from Years 10 and 11 attended a workshop run by
EX Woonona High School student Melissa Jarros from WIN
news, who spoke to the students on leadership, public
speaking and giving a confident presentation. David
Robson, the Principal at Kiera High School, spoke about
event management and gave the students valuable tips for
speaking on assembly. ……………………………………………………….
Taryn Yates, outgoing SRC member, commented on the
relevance of this initiative to the students' lives. “The day
taught us leadership skills that we can use after school. It
was also good to get the chance to interact with students
from other schools." The students also said they were
grateful to Ms Wall for all her encouragement and for
making these opportunities possible.
It was wonderful to hear the 'welcome to country' from the
inspirational Aboriginal elder Aunty Barb Nicholson, and to
hear the high quality of speeches from the primary school
students.
The debating topic was on a very difficult and complicated
area, and Bulli High School was successful against Woonona
in the debate. However, our students should be proud that
they represented the school in this difficult debate.

Thank you to Ron Thompson for his great coaching.
Thank you to Woonona Bulli RSL for their generous donation
allowing our students to visit and train at Beaton Park prior to
both the Regional and State athletics.
Thank you to the family from our school who, for the second
year, donated money which allowed our athletes to continue
to have proper coaching support all the way to the state
carnival.
Congratulations also to the students who developed a passion
for athletics and continued to train even after they were not
involved at Regional or State level.

PONY CLUB NSW STATE MOUNTED GAMES
CHAMPIONSHIPS 2013
On the 14th—15th September 2013, teams from across the
state travelled to Holbrook to compete at the pony club NSW
State Mounted Games Championship. This included three
Woonona High School students, Amy Bradbury, Kira Small
and Breanna Geloven. Mounted games is the competition of
teams of five, which verse in a series of ten games, which rely
on speed, accuracy and skill. Each event is like a relay in
which competitors have to jump of their horse, pick up
objects and encounter different obstacles. Kira and Breanna
were part of the zone team which qualified for rope race
finals with the fastest time from all heats. They then placed
5th in the final. Great effort from all team members. Amy
was a member of the Woonona Pony Club team which
managed to qualify for eight finals and place overall reserve
champion. This makes them the second fastest team in NSW
under 17 years old. This was a great achievement for all team
members. Everyone had a great weekend.

YEAR 10 EXAMINATIONS
Dear Parents/ Carers
This letter is to inform you that the school has taken a
decision to reschedule the Year 10 students’ yearly
examinations and run them during the first week back in
term 4, from Wednesday 9th October, 2013 through to
Friday 11th October, 2013.
This decision has been taken to provide our students with
the opportunity to experience a more formal examination
setting as they will be conducted in the school hall as a
whole year group. It also allows for examinations that
extend for 2 hours to be completed for the first time by this
cohort which will be good preparation for students as they
enter their Preliminary courses in 2014.
In previous years, students would have had the School
Certificate examination to gain experience. The change is
also required because the school hall is unavailable for much
of the term due to HSC commitments.
Faculties preparing examinations will ensure that only
content completed during the first 3 terms will be
examinable and students will be fully briefed by each faculty
in preparation.
Please find a copy of the examination timetable on the back
of this sheet to assist you child’s preparation. Note that the
timing for the duration of the school day will be identical to
a normal day and that students will still be completing sport
as normal on the Wednesday.

FROM YEAR 10 AND MISS EPTON
The students of Year 10 have had the pleasure of Giles Poitau’s
company for the last month. Giles hails from Toulouse in
France and has been spending his summer holidays here with
us at Woonona High School. Giles settled in very well at the
school and made friends very quickly with the Year 10 cohort.
He delighted us with his rendition of the French National
Anthem at the stage 5 assembly. We would like to wish Giles
Poitau bon voyage et bonne continuation. Goodbye and good
luck, Giles!
YEAR 10 WORK READINESS COURSE AND EXCURSION
A group of 10 year 10 students has just completed a Work
Readiness course with Lions volunteers over the last 6 weeks.
The culmination of the course was a formal, three course meal
at The Fine Line Function Centre in Wollongong. Students were
accompanied by two Lions volunteers and Ms Epton. They each
had to give an impromptu speech of one minute duration and
acquitted themselves very well. Each student who completed
the course was presented with a certificate by Lions Jeff
Zuiderwyk and John McQuiggin.
MONITORING WEEK
This week student monitoring was completed for all
students Years 7—11. Students are monitored in each
subject twice a term.
Students were handed monitoring cards in roll call this
week. If you have not seen your son or daughters card
please phone the school for a replacement.
Student monitoring is important as it indicates to both
students and parents / carers how they are performing in
each subject.
A - ALWAYS - At all times displays a positive attitude,
effort and application. These students are fully engaged in
all learning experiences.
U-USUALLY – Displays a positive attitude, effort and
application. These students are often engaged in learning
experiences.
S-SOMETIMES - Inconsistently displays a positive attitude,
effort and application. These students show the minimum
engagement in the learning experience.
R-RARELY – Attitude, effort and application are rarely
apparent. There is limited engagement in the learning
experience.

As the term draws to a close, I want to wish all the Year 12
students all the very best for your HSC exams. Stay cool and
calm and try your best!
My Friends continues next term for Year 8 students in Roll
Call classes 4 and 5. I look forward to getting to know those
students a bit better, and equipping them with some
excellent life-skills for being resilient in everyday life.
I hope all staff and students have a restful, enjoyable
holiday and enjoy the gorgeous spring weather!

LIBRARY
MANGA/ANIME CLUB
This fortnight Jesse Marton
spoke about the new Manga
series called Durarara. This
series deals with a young boy
who longs for the exciting life
of the big city moves to
Ikebukuro at the invitation of
his childhood friend Masaomi
Kida. After meeting Masaomi
at the train station, they both
set out at night to the streets of Ikebukuro. Masaomi warns him
about people he doesn't want to cross in the city: like the
superhumanly strong man, Shizuo Heiwajima, an information
broker named Izaya Orihara, and a mysterious gang known as
“The Dollars”. The narrative follows all of the characters
equally, showing how their lives intersect.
Shania Everson spoke about
the series Claymore. The
series is set on a fictional
medieval island where
humans are plagued by
Yoma , humanoid shapeshifters.
A
mysterious
group, known as The
Organization,
creates
human-Yoma hybrids to get
rid of the Yoma. These female warriors wear armored uniforms.
The public refer to them as "Claymores," alluding to their
Claymore swords.
So this week I decided to review the somewhat unusual
book The Zombie Survival Guide. This book has been
designated as non-fiction because although all of the
material about zombies is fiction, the information in the
book can be used in real life situations. I personally thought
the book was tongue in cheek, comedy. Worth a read
though.
LIBRARY ASSISTANT’S STOCKTAKE TRAINING DAY
On Wednesday 11th September, Woonona High School
hosted the Regional Sass Reference Group (RSRG) Library
Assistant’s training day on Stocktaking. Our Library
Assistant, Mrs Judith Brooks, who is the Library Assistant
Training Coordinator for RSRG, Coordinator of the Illawarra
Library Assistants Network Group and well known for her
expertise in library administration, conducted the day. The
course highlighted the importance of accurate record
keeping, as it provides the necessary information on
resources that may be out dated and no longer in
accordance with the new Australian Curriculum.
The day was very well received by all participants, some of
whom had travelled as far away as Batemans Bay and
Goulburn. Feedback from the course included comments
about the friendly and welcoming atmosphere at Woonona
High and also the well managed and inviting library we have
at Woonona. Thank you to Ms Chambers, our Hospitality
Teacher, who provided an impressive array of food for the
participants.
BOOK CLUB
This fortnight our guest
speaker was Mr MacKenzie,
Head Teacher H.S.I.E. He
spoke about his love of sport
biographies and classic
literature.
The most popular teenage fiction sub-genre at the moment is
zombies.You probably know that zombies are popular right
now. You might not know just how outrageously, staggeringly
popular they happen to be. Zombies are the undisputed king of
all genres. Not only do they top bestseller lists and video
games and the iPad, the undead dominate television, too.

VISUAL ARTS
Term 3 in Visual Arts has been extremely busy and
productive. We have had the Community of Schools
exhibition, HSC showcase and all other classes producing
amazing art work. Woonona High is blessed with talented
and hard working visual arts and photo media students.
We wish Year 12 good luck with their exams and Brendan
Archer good luck with his film as it is entered in two
competitions.Year7 has been learning to draw portraits
and carictures. Year 8 have learnt to draw, shade, tone,
colour and cut stencils of animals. Year 9 have been
mastering the skill of sculpting and carving hebel brick.
Years 9 & 10 Photomedia have been learning the ancient

Opening Hours
The Uniform Shop now has an email address. To contact
Renae or Jackie for any enquiries regarding uniform orders
please email them at [email protected].
Uniform order forms can be downloaded from our website
or they are available at the Front Office.
The Uniform Shop is open each Thursday from 8.00am—
9.30am. If this time is unsuitable for you, orders can be
paid for at the Front Office (Mon—Fri 7.45am to 3.15pm)
and the items will be delivered to your child the following
Thursday.

Year Ten UOW Excursion
Last Friday, approximately fifty year ten Woonona High
students, travelled to the University of Wollongong for an
informative excursion to learn about university life.
After catching a train and a bus to the Wollongong
university, we met our guides for the day, and were shown
around the university. First, we got to see things university
students do other than studying, and our guides told us
about the clubs and societies available for the students’
entertainment and social benefit.
The university in itself is like a little town, with its own post
office and hairdresser, and places where people stay on
campus. Many jobs are available on campus for the
students, including working in cafes.………………………….
Next, we were shown the science block and told about the
broad range of studies you could do in the area of science,
such as biology, archaeology, chemistry, environmental
science and much more. After a bit more walking around
the
campus,
we
finally
sat
down
and
rested our legs, while our guides talked serious business
about what type of degrees we can do at the University of
Wollongong, and how to achieve the goal of being what we
want to be when we finish school.…………………………………...
They discussed options such as double degrees and ATARs,
and explained the difference between Bachelor, Masters
and PHD degrees. We received booklets from the university,
showing us the vast range of things to study at university,
and what types of jobs each area of study may prepare you
for. This was a very helpful and informative excursion, and
everyone was keen to ask questions about things they
wanted to do after school.
Thank you to Mr Chamberlain for organising the excursion
for us, and to Ms Epton for accompanying us on the trip.

If you are considering TAFE for 2014 you should be aware of
these important dates:
TAFE Information and Dates
● 2014 COURSES open online 27th September for enrol and
apply only courses. Application type courses open on
the 2nd November, but only for a few courses.
● CHOICES DAY: 2nd November Wollongong Campus. Various
teaching staff will be present and students can enrol on
the day and pay later (up to a week or two later)
● TAFE Career Guide distributed at the end of September

UOW Scholarships
UOW Scholarships applications are open. The application
closing date has been extended to 30 October 2013.
The Scholarships website includes FAQ's, instructions on how
to apply, interview guidelines and other information your
students will need.
Please encourage your students to apply prior to this deadline.
HSC in the Holidays September Workshops
HSC in the Holidays will run HSC preparation workshops
at UOW's Wollongong and Southern Sydney campuses in the
September school holidays. These are full-day workshops
offered across 15 different HSC subjects. For a full
timetable and to register for a workshop, please visit HSC in
the Holidays.
UOW College
Applications for UOW College 2014 Foundation Studies and
Diploma courses will close on 10 January 2014.
Foundation Studies is a great option for students who are
concerned they may not get the required ATAR for entry
directly into UOW. Students can get more information about
these courses and the entry guidelines on the UOW College
website.
Students from the University's drawing region interested in
Foundation Studies courses, who have experienced
disadvantage during their secondary education, are eligible to
apply for STEP to UOW, a program that offers fee exempt
Foundation Studies. Students must have experienced one or
a combination of the following circumstances:





Financial hardship
Disrupted schooling
Home and environment responsibilities
English language difficulty
Personal illness/disability
Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander students may also apply.
Students who may be eligible for STEP to UOW have until 10
January 2014 to submit their application. Further information
can be found on the UOW College website.
Options Day
UOW College will also be well represented at UOW Options
Day, for students who may have questions after they receive
their ATAR. Options Day will be held at the UOW main
campus on Friday 4 January from 9am - 2pm. Bookings are
not necessary for this event.

Year Ten Work Experience
All year ten students are expected to participate in work
experience in term four of this year. “Work Experience Week”
will be week seven of term four; 18-22 November. This has
been changed from Week 6 in order to allow more time for
preparatory lessons for work experience following final
exams.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY FUN
Wollongong Youth Services will be hosting a number
events throughout the September and October School
Holidays (24/09 to 4/10).
The Drop in room will be open from 12.00- 5.00pm
offering pool, table soccer, air hockey, computers,
xbox, basketball and skating.
We will also be holding a skate day hosted by Skate
Boarding Australia, featuring two of Australia’s premier
skaters holding master classes and demo’s.
There will be a hip hop workshop lead by a
professional dancer followed by a night of music, crash
mat fun and art workshops including ty dying,
paperdolls, and badge making.

IAssistSafety App
The AssistSafety App helps children learn protective
behaviours. Using a hand IAssistSafety allows a child to identify
5 adults who they could ask for help if feeling unsafe. The
hand assists children to remember their safe people. These 5
adults will help the child to be safe if they are scared, worried,
sad or just need help. This App helps to give your child a voice
in keeping themselves safe.
