Fundamental and Occupational
Toxicology Course
19 & 20 April 2011
This training is designed to provide comprehensive
understanding of the correct selection and use of PPE. It
also provides in-depth information of establishing and
implementing PPE programs in compliance with the
PPE Guidelines (2006) published by DOSH and
USECHH 2000. A total of 17 participants attended the
course at Capitol Hotel Kuala Lumpur.
The trainer, Mr. GT Lim, CIH, has more than 15 years
experience in Occupational Safety and Health. He
graduated with BSc (Hons) in Chemistry and MSc in
Environmental Engineering. He is also a Certified
Industrial Hygienist (CIH) by the American Board of
Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). He contributed his
knowledge and expertise in the PPE Guidelines which
was published by DOSH in 2006. He is also the current
Honorable Treasurer of MIHA.
Smiling faces from our participants…and the trainer..
This course is an awareness course on toxicology. It
describes the principles involved in studying the
effects of chemical to the living organisms, provides
general understanding in the mechanisms of toxicity
and applications during chemical health risk
assessment. A total of 19 participants attended the
course at Swiss Garden Hotel Kuala Lumpur.
The course was presented by Prof. Salmaan Hussain,
PHD in Toxicology (MRC Toxicology Unit,
Leicester) Eurotox registered Toxicologist (ERT) and
a Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology

AIHce 2011 COFERECE UPDATES
PAGE 6
The Conference kicked off with an inspiring talk by Mr. Gene Kranz, NASA Flight
Control Director and Presidential Medal of Freedom Recipient on “Failure is not an
option”. Kranz shared the challenges in bringing down the Apollo 13 spacecraft aand its
crew of 3 astronauts back to earth on 17 April 1970, after its oxygen system failed.
Even though not directly related to IH, his speech inspires thousands of Hygienists that
workers’ exposure is our core business.
Conference key focus areas:
Green Chemistry & Strategic Roles of IH!
The principles of green chemistry include the need to design safer
chemicals and products. This benign-by-design
design approach incorporates
considerationss of chemicals’ effects on public health and the environment.
IH will have a role in helping business understand the potential for
reducing or eliminating worker exposures, improving product stewardship
and innovation, and accelerating competitive advantag
advantage.
The AIHce 2011 Conference
which was successfully held
Strengthening of OSHA
The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) continues to
strengthen the IH practices in the new initiatives after 40 years of
implementation. Among others, they are looking at reviewing various
standards & legislation and be a “compliance assistance” rather than
enforcement agency.
Latest on nano
NIOSH shares several studies conducted on several approaches to safe
nanotechnology. The research focuses on the types of industry utilizing
nanomaterials, profiling
ling the different types of nanometerials, developing
relevant occupational exposure limits, determining exposure levels to
nanomaterials in primary and secondary users and approaches to control
the exposure. Various research is also on
on-going in universities on the health
effects arising from the exposures.
on May 14
14-19, in Portland,
Oregon continues stressing
the important roles of
industrial hygienists. Here are
some of the key highlights
from one of our Committee
Members, Norhazlina Mydin
that attended the session!
IH in Action - Deepwater Horizon
Various stakeholders including BP, OSHA, NIOSH, US Coast Guard etc
shared their roles and what was done in response to one of the world’s
horrendous incidents. Something that we can learn – various IH monitoring
was conducted during the response. Tasks such as oil skimming, dispersant
operations, booming, in-situ
situ burning were evaluated exposure monitoring
was conducted for health hazards such as noise, heat stress, and ch
chemicals.
