The lazy days of summer can be a great time to bring your family closer to God and each other.
Try ideas like these to have a happy, holy summer:
Practice a new virtue. For example, fortitude can be practiced by setting a family exercise goal and working
toward it together. Temperance can be strengthened by limiting time spent watching television or playing
video games.
Visit the King. Weekly Mass is an important way to bring your family closer to God. Consider going to some
daily Masses, too. Then you will get extra helpings of grace.
Celebrate the saints of summer. Learn about saints like St. Elizabeth of Portugal (July 4) - queen and peace
maker, Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha (July 14) - Native American and brave Christian, St. John Vianney
(Aug. 4) - devoted priest, St. Maximilian Kolbe (Aug. 14) - publisher and martyr.
Make Sunday special. Make Sunday about God and family by avoiding activities you can’t do together.
After Mass, eat together, play outside together, go visiting together. Defer chores to another day.
Learn a new devotion. There is a treasure trove of practices families can use to enrich our faith. The most
popular is the Rosary – prayers that focus on the life and mission of Christ. There are also novenas, spiritual
bouquets, chaplets, pilgrimages, and more. Ask your priest for suggestions.

Luke 1:57-66
TAKE GOD
AT H I S W O R D
Sometimes God has to take drastic action to get our attention. Before John the Baptist was
born, Zechariah was visited by an angel and told that his prayers for a son and his prayers for a savior would
be answered in a miraculous way. The appearance of an angel should have been enough to convince
Zechariah but he was still skeptical that what the angel said was possible. So, God shut Zechariah’s mouth to
make it easier for him to hear and see the truth. After the angel’s visit, Zechariah silently watched his wife’s
body swell with her miraculous pregnancy. When the baby was born, Zechariah demonstrated his obedience
and his mouth was opened. Zechariah’s first words showered praise on God and told the people around him
of God’s faithfulness and awesome love.
What can a parent do? We can always trust God’s love and care. He will never fail us. Help your children
listen for God’s voice and remember that all things are possible for God.

What is a “Vocations Cross”?
The Vocations Cross is a symbol that is being used by St. Kieran Church to remind all of us about
the importance of praying for religious vocations. It is an actual wooden cross that has inscribed on
it the words, “The harvest is great; the workers are few.” The Vocations Cross Program is designed
to be a visible and continuous chain of prayers for vocations among the St. Kieran community.
Each Sunday, the Vocations Cross representing the following of a religious vocation, together with a
prayer for vocations, will be presented to a voluntary family at the Offertory of the Mass. The intent
is to have a family each week pray at home throughout that week for vocations among our parishioners. The prayers may take
place at the dinner table, in the evenings, etc. – whenever is convenient for that family. The following Sunday, a different family,
couple, or individual will be designated for the upcoming week. Keep in mind that a “family” can be a single person! In taking
the Vocations Cross, each family commits themselves to pray during that week the vocations prayer in petition for the gift of
sisters, brothers, deacons, priests, and lay ministers to our Church.
There is only one way to overcome a shortage of priest, religious, and lay vocations, and that is through an abundance of
prayers! Please let some of those prayers be yours! May our prayers help to inspire young men and women to be attentive to
the movement of the Holy Spirit within them and to step forward in faith and with generous hearts to wherever the Spirit leads
them.
The Vocations Cross Program will resume in July. For more information, or if you are willing to participate in the Vocations
Cross Program, please contact Ron Koscierzynski, Pat Radacsy, or any member of the St. Kieran Knights of Columbus.

PICNIC!
T
he St. Kieran Parish Picnic will be held Sunday, September 9, the
actual feast day of St. Kieran! Please mark the date on your
calendar. The picnic will begin immediately following the 11:30 a.m.
Polka Mass and will last until 4 p.m.
Our Picnic Committee has already begun making arrangements for the
event. However, we cannot do it alone. Nor can we expect the Ushers or
the Knights of Columbus to do it all for us. This picnic is for everyone to
enjoy. That means it is up to everyone as fellow parishioners to help make
that possible.
Can you assist in selling tickets after any of the Masses on the weekends of
August 18/19, 25/26, or September 1/2? Can you serve food, drinks, cotton
candy, or popcorn for a short time while at the picnic? Can you assist in
conducting games for the children for a short time while at the picnic?
Your help is needed and will be appreciated. It
will mean that everyone will have an opportunity
to spend some time with their friends and
family, as apposed to working the entire event.

St. Kieran Parish, Shelby Township
th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Liberty and freedom are words that that carry significant
meaning. In the past year and a half we've seen those words bandied
about in a myriad of contexts. Across the Arab world young and old,
men and women, have all used those two words to talk about their
hopes and desires for their countries. In the United States, bishops
speak about liberty in reference to the right to be free from government
regulations in the practice of one's faith. In China, the words are often
used in an economic context, while having little to do with other
aspects of society, especially as far as politics is concerned.
While freedom may be a concept debated by officials, for many
individuals it is a concrete desire. For some people, freedom comes
down to the very practical day-to-day experiences of being free from
hunger, being free from oppressive labor conditions, or being free from
illness. The woman with the hemorrhages in this weekend's Gospel
was longing to be freed from her illness, something that she had
endured for a dozen years. Freedom, for her, meant that she would no
longer carry the burden of a debilitating sickness.
A quick review of our country's involvement in the events of the Arab
Spring show just how difficult it is to have any effect on the liberty of
another if we are not the proximate oppressor. In the same way, we
cannot easily remove the burdens of illness, homelessness, or
unemployment from those around us who may suffer from these
troubles. What we can do is stand with them, and offer them our
support and love. In the Gospel, people from the synagogue official's
house told him to give up on a cure because his daughter was dead.
But Jesus told him, "Do not be afraid; just have faith." Those are words
that we can use as
well, as long as we
are willing to support
and console those
who are held bound
by suffering.

seems like the church
is in crisis all the time.
What is the biggest threat
to the church?
This is the type of question that popular
proverbs tell you to avoid as dinner
conversation! It is a loaded question, because
everyone has their favorite target to blame.
So-called liberals blame it on the lack of
progress while so-called conservatives blame
it on too much change. Some see celibacy as
the problem, or the lack of Latin, while others
say it is the lack of faith or devotion or
reverence.
With that in mind, I would suggest that the
biggest threat is losing sight of our mission to
preach and teach the Gospel as best we can.
When we get sidetracked by issues that are
secondary, or get caught up in arguing about
things that are irrelevant, we run the risk of
forgetting why we are a church to begin with.
Parishes can become divided communities
over such things as: social activities,
fundraisers, hymn preferences, or bingo. We
need to know what things help us proclaim
the Gospel message and then go about the
business of being disciples with enthusiasm
and zeal. Knowing the mission keeps us
focused and united in our work to build up the
kingdom of God.
Do you know the difference between a webmaster and a toastmaster?
What about Hypertext and Hyperspace?
Do you prefer to work on content channels versus

"If we knew how profitable those visits are, we
should be constantly prostrate before the altar. The
Saints understood this truth; they knew that Jesus
Christ is the source of all grace, and whenever they
encountered any difficulty or wished to obtain any
particular favor, they ran to Jesus Christ in the
Blessed Sacrament." (St. Marcellin Champagnat)

STAY FIT - KEEP BALANCED
As people get older, they may experience age-related
loss of balance that can result in falls and related
injuries. This is caused by a gradual loss of the central
nervous system cells. This condition can be made worse
if you lack flexibility and physical strength according to
Helen Cohen, a specialist in Vestibular Rehabilitation. If
you find you are losing your balance, contact your
doctor. Discuss your plan to get in shape, which will
increase your strength, flexibility and the balance of your
life. You’re never too old to get in shape!
This is not medical advice. Always consult your doctor first.

Walk With Me
The loss of a loved one defies
description. For each individual it is a
unique experience. How do you go
on? What direction do you take to
find balance in your life? There are
reminders that exist and remind you
of what you have lost. A picture, a
song on the radio, memories that
return unannounced. While it is
important what you do for yourself, it
also is suggested that you allow
others to walk with you as your
restructure your new life.
The Walk With Me grief group is
structured to assist you in your grief,
and is facilitated by
Licensed Professional Counselors
trained in grief counseling.

W
hy is it important to be registered in a parish?
Registration is the official way we join a parish community. Many people think that because they attend a
particular parish they automatically belong. At times young adults who have moved away for years think they are
still registered under their parents. But membership requires signing up - formally enrolling yourself in a parish.
Registration is a commitment to a community, a way to be included in the religious, social and ministerial activities of your
parish. Your registration affects the parish in many ways. Census numbers can determine how many priests are assigned
to a church, what benefits and obligations the community has to the diocese, and how Masses and programs are planned
and scheduled. Registration shows you belong! It is also necessary for certain benefits, like scheduling sacraments,
obtaining sponsor certificates, and getting donation statements for tax purposes. Most importantly, it lets the parish count

and work of your parish.
