As we end the 2014 / 2015 Chamber year and now move
into the new 2015/2016 fiscal year, it is time to reflect on what
we accomplished on behalf of all of our Chamber members.
First of all, I would like to thank the Chamber staff, Board
Members, Ambassadors, and the many volunteers for their
contributions and support.
Throughout this second year of my term, I spent a considerable amount of time evaluating existing Chamber programs
and activities, firsthand, to determine how well they provide
our members with the level of service everyone expects. From
mixers, network cafés, ribbon cuttings, workshops, signature
events, and a variety of Tourism Committee efforts, we do offer
our members many choices to engage in, and I wanted to make
sure we are at the highest level of performance as possible.
Our second year having the Local Issues Committee as coequal to the State/Federal Government Relations Council exceeded what I had expected when we first created it. Clearly,
our Chamber members value the focus on city issues that have
a direct impact on everyone’s business and quality of life here
in Redondo. The increased level of interest on local issues
important to businesses was reflected in the elevated level of
attendance and participation of its committee members. I am
now confident that this committee has come into full fruition

as additional local issues continue to emerge that impact our
city hall and its elected officials.
During this past year, the city has made strides formulating
a new partnership that will hopefully lead to the much needed
improvements to our waterfront. We are hopeful that this effort
will result in a project that will be enjoyed by everyone in the
best interests of the entire community and South Bay region.
2014/2015 is filled with memories of the many volunteer hours
contributed by so many members on behalf of the Redondo
Chamber. As Chairman of the Board, I would like to express
my sincere appreciation and gratitude for the effort expended
to improve our local business community and our wonderful
quality of life we all experience as residents of Redondo Beach.
I will end my review of our 2014 / 2015 year with a pledge to
sustain the momentum we gained as my objective of “raising
the bar” succeeded as I had hoped and planned.
During the fall of each year, the Redondo Beach Chamber of
Commerce & Visitors Bureau’s Government Relations Council
develops its legislative priorities. These priorities serve as the
foundation for tracking proposed legislation at all levels of
government. It is with this foundation that the Chamber’s continuing effort to improve the Redondo Beach business climate
is shaped. n

Creating a Strong Local Economy

The Portofino Hotel
The Tourism Committee is responsible for promoting Redondo Beach as a destination in order to bring more visitors to our city who might frequent our restaurants, shops and hotels. Tourism promotion helps to create a strong
local economy and provides revenues for improvements to our city infrastructure. Through a contract with the City
of Redondo Beach, the Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau operates as the marketing arm
for Redondo Beach and engages in many activities designed to promote our city and attract more visitors. It is important to note that the Visitors Bureau budget is derived from the Transient Occupancy Tax, which is completely
funded by visitors, not residents. Meaning, that as we work towards being a city people dream to visit, the visitors
build our local economy and fund the growth of our infrastructure; they make us an even brighter coastal jewel.

Hosted a national press tour focused on showcasing our soft adventure waterfront as well as our artisanal shopping and dining. Writers and content creators from “USA Today’s 10 Best”, TravelMindset.com, and “The Log”
were in attendance resulting in:
• 2 Placements in USA Today’s 10 Best including Tony’s and Barney’s Beanery
• Article in “The Log”
Attended tourism related conferences and trade shows including HSMAI-LA PKF 2015 Consulting Conference;
LAEDC’s Economic Forecast in Hospitality & Tourism; and TripAdvisor in partnership with the Los Angles Tourism and Convention Board Presents DigMe – LA: The Digital Media Travel Summit
Addressed inquiries via phone, email and in-person from visitors seeking more information about Redondo
Beach, our businesses, community events and services. Distributed over 1300 visitor’s guides via standard mail,
walk-in’s and scheduled pick-ups to travelers requesting information about Redondo Beach. Over 200 requests
were wedding inquiries.
Created a new ‘Redondo Beach Dining Guide’ which can be found at area hotels and attractions as well as
mailed to those who request visitor’s guides. The area centric design means the guide is uniquely designed
for each area of town, easing the guest experience. Also, this new guide is regularly updated to include new
member restaurants, events and points of interest throughout the city.
Hosted two Reverse Hotel FAM Tours for front line hotel staff to better acquaint them with the highlights and
recent additions to Redondo Beach. When Hotel staff experience our beautiful destination first-hand, they’re
better able to relay enthusiasm and information to their guests. The first Reverse FAM Tour took place in July
and highlighted the waterfront. Itinerary included Pier & Harbor, Riviera Village - Farmer’s Market, and touch
points at numerous Redondo Beach landmarks. The second Reverse FAM Tour took place in February and
highlighted shopping destinations. Itinerary included South Bay Galleria, South Bay MarketPlace, Artesia Blvd
and Dive ‘n Surf.
Hosted two internal Lunch & Learns to address industry issues and connect with hotel managerial staff, creating a stronger working relationship between the tourism committee and the marketing arm of member hotels.

forms. The second Lunch and Learn took place in April with guest speaker Maris Somerville, President of Somerville Associates, who
discussed best practices on how to maximize our Public Relations efforts.
Maintained and continued to promote and advertise ‘Visit Redondo Beach’ our interactive Mobile App, downloadable for free on iPhone,
iPad, Android & Blackberry, intended for the tourism market as well as locals. Includes hundreds of attractions, dining, events and accommodations; ‘Nearby Me’ feature gives information about things to do, dining, shopping, etc closest to your location; share experiences
& photos on Facebook, Twitter, Flickr & YouTube; and check out the local weather & surf report.

• Three hotels came online increasing the available rooms in the City, especially in North Redondo
• Increased TOT has enabled the City to take a bolder stance in advertising
• Room rate has increased 23% which is higher than LA’s overall 7.5% overall growth, and narrowed the gap between Redondo
and South Bay by 16%
Developed a PBS special with “In America TV” hosted by James Earl Jones, which will air nationally for a full year and includes targeted
digital and televised advertising.

Became the only Beach City to control their associated Trip Advisor page. We combined this advertising avenue with a targeted digital
marketing package. With this digital strategy we were able to control many of the forward facing elements on our TripAdvisor.com page,
prevent on-page competitive marketing, and direct our ads to harvest potential visitors from nearby beach destinations.
Invested in a digital marketing strategist, allowing our online reach to directly connect with our audience as well as our potential fans.
This year-long commitment saw our social numbers climb as well as drove a significant increase in our website traffic and visitor interest.

Chamber released its 11h annual vote record showing how local state elected officials sided with Redondo
Beach businesses.
Tracked over 50 potential new laws in 2014-15 that may have had an impact on our business community.
Sent email alerts to all Chamber members providing an easy way for businesses to take action on issues
impacting their businesses and the local economy.
Provided members information on new state laws in 2015 that would impact the bottom line of
Redondo Beach employers.
Chamber testified in state Senate and Assembly hearings in Sacramento to support the passage of SB 718,
economic development incentives programs for the next Advanced Strategic Bomber program.
Participated in the annual California Chamber Legislative Day in Sacramento and met with the entire South Bay
Legislative Delegation, as well as the Governor’s Office of Planning and Research (OPR) to discuss public policies
important to Redondo Beach and the South Bay including the Los Angeles Air Force Base.
Supported a legislative package to help reduce frivolous law suits on business owners stemming from Americans
Disability Act compliance issues.
The Chamber continues to support legislation that attempts to fill the void left by the loss of redevelopment
funding to support local economic development projects
The Chamber opposed to more than 10 legislative proposals that were identified as “Job Killers”.
The Chamber worked as a leading advocate with the passage of AB 306 (Hadley-Redondo Beach) legislation
related to military parents and school enrollment choices that would help the Los Angeles Air Force Base attract
and retain military personnel.
Advocated for the preservation of Career Technical Education funding for training programs through
organizations such as Southern California Regional Occupation Center (SoCal ROC) and AB 907.
Endorsed US Chamber initiative to support the re-authorization of the Export-Import Bank and sent letters to
each member of the California delegation in Congress.
The Chamber was a leading advocate for AB 306 to help parents at the Los Angeles Air Force Base participate in
School of Choice and further our efforts to retain the base in the South Bay.

The Chamber strongly advocated for the passage of Measure B, which would have enacted an initiative that dictates that the AES
Redondo Beach Electricity Generating Plant located on North Harbor Drive phase out of operation by 2020, leaving its 50-acre
site vacant. The initiative would also have amended the city’s zoning to allow the proposed “Harbor Village Plan,” which was a
development plan that included 600 new residential units, 85,000 square feet of new commercial development, 250 hotel rooms and
10 acres of public open space - with sidewalks, pathways, landscaped medians and other open areas counted as open space.
Hosted city officials and senior staff members to discuss where certain local zoning, planning and development issues are in the
current process, and offered the Chamber and its members support to help advocate our position in the most advantageous and
productive manner.
Provided the business community perspectives on ways to encourage a progressive city economic development plan, and assembled
a grassroots advocacy organization to counterbalance the opinions of those who oppose smart development and progress in
Redondo Beach.
Continuously advocated on behalf of responsible revitalization of the Redondo Beach Waterfront, including the memorandum of
understanding and scoping plan processes involving the developer CenterCal. Lead a community wide effort to support the project plan.
Provided strategic engagement and provided numerous testimony at city council and other departmental hearings on important issues
impacting the local business community and economic vitality of Redondo Beach.

The Redondo ChamberPAC undertakes the following activities in its efforts to promote the local business climate: 1) solicits potential
members who are interested in making small PAC contributions; 2) raises funds to support or oppose local issues that affect the best

Strong membership is crucial to the success of any chamber of commerce and Redondo Beach is no different. Thus, it is the Membership Services Committee’s responsibility is to improve and maintain membership retention. The committee works to accomplish these
goals by offering a variety of services and programs that improve, enhance and add value to membership.
Ambassadors are the public relations and retention assistants of the Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Bureau (RBCC).
A group of business leaders in the community who have made a commitment to volunteer their time and efforts toward developing
and maintaining a feeling of goodwill and understanding between the RBCC and business, government, and the community at large.
The mission of an Ambassador is to ensure that the membership is being served. An Ambassador believes in creating productive
working relationships, encourages member involvement and acts as a catalyst in the RBCC effort to produce a dynamic business climate
within Redondo Beach.

Welcomed 93 new members into the Chamber and highlighted them on the Facebook page, on BeachLink and in our
weekly e-blast.
Hosted 4 New Member Orientations, which offered new members the opportunity to learn more about the benefits of membership and how to maximize their investment.
Our Ambassadors placed more than 1,000 personal calls and delivered over 400 anniversary gifts to members celebrating
Chamber anniversaries.
Hosted 33 Ribbon Cuttings, which provided a great marketing opportunity for members. Posted photos on Facebook at the conclusion, and had photos in The Beach Reporter and in the Chamber’s newsletter, Beach Business.
Reached our membership retention goal for this past year of 83%.
Grew our Ambassador program to a total of 21 active Ambassadors and Ambassadors in Training
Launched the Ambassador page on the website with headshots of each ambassador, as well as a group shot.

month to Mentor for a full 3 month period. They contacted the new member, invited them to the networking events, answered
any questions they had, and helped the new member acclimate to the Chamber.

Creating a strong local economy is one of the most important issues we face. In order to keep our community
vibrant, our city must see economic development that is both smart and long-term focused. The Economic Development Council (EDC) addresses the city’s economic development needs. This group looks at the current economic
environment of Redondo Beach, the economic environment of the future and the issues we are facing and will face as
we move forward.

The Economic Development Council facilitates a Student Business Leader for a Day program that provided scholarships to four deserving students who participated and submitted new business proposals.
One of the business plans selected was “the Hogwarts Experience” a camp for kids that simulates Harry Potter’s
world. Another business plan that was selected was the “Cool Contact Training Bat”, which is a thermochromics
(color changing film wrap) bat that will refine or perfect a players ability to succeed when using the bat by knowing
where the ball made contact with the bat when the bat changes color when the ball comes in contact with the bat.
The Chamber website offers online job postings & job submissions, resume submitting and reviewing.

The EDC is currently working on a “How to Hire a Veteran” pamphlet that will be distributed to members, be available to new businesses at the city and hosted online in our Business Resource Center.

Now recruiting for its 16th year, Leadership Redondo continues to provide participants with a sense of community
stewardship and awareness of the challenges and opportunities that are part of civic life here in our community.
There have been approximately 233 graduates from Leadership Redondo since the first class in 2000. These graduates include people from large businesses, small businesses, city employees, educators, non-profit organizations,
community volunteers, residents, and Chamber staff members. There are currently 21 participants in the 2015 class
who will graduate once their project has been completed.
Graduates of the program have been appointed as City Commissions, and been elected to official positions. Additional graduates serve on boards of the Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau, the Round Table, Community
service agencies and non-profit organizations.

Beach consistently demonstrate their commitment to making our city a better place. At the Redondo Beach Chamber
of Commerce & Visitors Bureau, we strive to offer programs and events for the community that make us all proud of
Redondo Beach. The Community Relations Division is responsible for overseeing many of these events, including the
Redondo Beach Lobster Festival, the Redondo Beach Super Bowl Sunday 10K/5K, the annual Installation Dinner &
Awards, the State of the City, school programs and partnering with symbiotic community organizations to create a balance and generosity and charm this City is known to represent.

The Chamber’s Community Relations Division encourages our business associations and local businesses to adopt
the MORE TO SEA Brand promoting the community’s identity for residents for the purpose of unifying Redondo
Beach identity.
Hosted the Super Bowl Sunday 10K/5K and Lobster Festival, which promote Redondo Beach as a destination and
attract tourist dollars.
Organized the Super Bowl 10K/5K Costume Contest; sponsored by the King Harbor Association. This year the portion of the event got bigger and grander, with a photo booth and great prizes for the many entrants – a fun part of
the event for participants and spectators alike.
Partnered with Kaiser Permanente as Presenting Sponsor of the annual Super Bowl Sunday 10K / 5K 2011 – 2015.
Provided the chamber’s iSnap Photo Booth FREE at events to market and promote our members at chamber events
using Facebook, Twitter and other technology.
Chevron, Inc sponsored the ever popular Super Bowl Sunday 10K/5K VIP Tent, that hosts sponsors, athletes and business leaders helping to facilitate a successful event that showcases Redondo Beach.
Hosted Mayor Aspel’s second State of the City event which was a tremendously successful. Our wildly popular mayor
attracted business and community from throughout the South Bay.
The annual Installation Dinner and Community Awards event raised over $5000 that supports education and Business
Development programs. The NEW Casino format made the event more giving guests greater opportunities to to
mix and mingle with community leaders, chamber members, city staff and overlook the beautiful waterfront at the
Portofino Hotel that we all enjoy.
Presented the Man and Woman of the Year awards to Dr. Steven Keller, Redondo Beach Unified Superintendent; and
Dinah Lary, Body Glove International for their community activities.
Recognized City Employee Jim Allen, Harbor Facilities Manager as City Employee of the Year for leading by example,
and his outstanding service to the city since 1990; he delivers excellence.
Continue to support and promote upcoming events throughout the community beyond those special events sponsored by the chamber; these includes events like car shows, “Walk About Redondo”, the Rivera Village Summer
Festival and weekly Farmers Market, Concerts on the Pier, Chalk Art Event and not forgetting the September signature Lobster Festival. We are always on the lookout for exciting things that will involve and promote our community.
Continue to support the Blue Zone Project led now by the Beach Cities Health District. Each month you can find up
to date news about the Blue Zone Project in the Chamber’s Beach Business.
Established new Health & Wellness Committee to gather and disseminate via newsletters and social media information
to local businesses, Chamber members and employers to foster healthier employees and workplace environments.
The Leadership Redondo Program continues to develop our future Community Leaders with an annual class that
ultimately results in a legacy class project designed to add value to our community. The 2014 class has wrapped up
their fundraising efforts for the Parsons for Kids Project at both Redondo Libraries and will be getting started with the
re-make of the children’s areas.
The Leadership Redondo Class of 2013 just installed their art sculpture at the beginning of the NEWLY opened Redondo Gate Way Bike Path. We hope you get a chance to go view and enjoy it.

The 2014 California Drought:
Time for Some Serious
Conservation
For the third straight year, California has experienced one of the most severe periods of drought
in recent history. The effect this has had on the
state’s agriculture industry will cost the state an
estimated $2.2 billion this year in losses and added expenses while cutting 17,100 farm jobs.
Meanwhile, negotiations continue by lawmakers in Sacramento over the size of the water bond
that will make the November statewide ballot which will fund an $11 billion drinking water
and water supply reliability program. Voters will
also decide whether or not to approve the Bay
Delta Conservation Plan that will divert more water around the Northern California delta waterways for increased flows to Southern California.
What’s missing is a component to build additional reservoirs because of longstanding opposition
by environmental groups.
At the same time, the State Water Resources
Control Board just announced it will require local
water agencies to impose mandatory restrictions
on outdoor watering under an approved emergency rule. The regulations give these agencies
the authority to fine water wasters up to $500 a
day (this comes following Governor Brown’s unsuccessful voluntary 20% conservation).
Starting this month, local water agencies must
ban wasteful practices such as allowing runoff
from outdoor sprinklers, hosing down driveways
and using drinking water in ornamental fountains
that release water in storm drains without capturing it for reuse.
For Redondo Beach business and homeowners, the easiest thing we can do to reduce the
