moving image culture for young audiences.
Welcome to our new Autumn/Winter Education
programme.
At the time of putting together our programme, no
one is quite sure what the impact of cutbacks and
substitution will be on getting out of school or taking on
extra-curricular activities. However, given the inevitable
challenges, we’re doing our best to bring our film
education programme to venues near you. The current
IFI refurbishment also gives us an opportunity to run
events in different areas in Dublin such as Smithfield,
Tallaght, Swords and Coolock. Among our touring titles
this term is French award-winner The Class, new
Leaving Certificate title The Constant Gardener, Ken
Loach’s Looking for Eric starring the football hero
himself, as well as Irish hit Waveriders.
It has been well documented that in recessionary
times cinema audiences increase, making film
education even more relevant today. A huge range of
film activities take place around Ireland in schools, at
festivals, in arts centres and youth organisations, and
with increasingly limited resources it’s even more
pressing that we combine our knowledge and expertise.
In conjunction with the Irish Film Board/Bord Scannán
na hÉireann, we are embarking on a research project,
Film Focus, to develop a national strategy for film
education and young people. Our first step is to find out
what activities are already in place. If you could take 10
minutes to complete the enclosed questionnaire (or
online) it would be greatly appreciated.

A new addition to the Leaving Certificate Comparative
Study for 2011, The Constant Gardener is a gripping
adaptation of John le Carré’s novel from the director
of City of God, Fernando Meirelles. It stars Ralph
Fiennes as Justin Quayle, a quiet and unassuming
British diplomat who’s posted to Nairobi, Kenya. While
he tends to his plants, his activist wife Tessa (Rachel
Weisz) and her driver get brutally murdered at a
crossroads in mysterious circumstances. Quayle is
determined to get to the bottom of his wife’s murder,
and in the process uncovers a web of corruption and
greed involving powerful figures and a major drug
corporation who are exploiting the locals.

Starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, this
iconic film is an excellent addition to the Leaving
Certificate Comparative Study. Rick Blaine (Bogart) is a
cynical American nightclub owner escaping the war in
Europe and living in the French-controlled Moroccan
city of Casablanca. He becomes the bearer of
important travel permits and when his ex-lover Ilsa
Lund (Bergman) arrives from Paris with her fugitive
husband Victor Laszlo, Rick’s sheltered world collapses
and he is faced with tough decisions. A film about
love, conflict and virtue, with one of the most famous
and referenced endings in movie history.
Drama-documentary chronicling the often tragic life
and times of one of Ireland’s most prominent Irish
writers and pioneer of the Irish Literary Revival.
Inspired by Diarmuid de Faoite’s one-man play, it
combines drama, archive and interview to not only
reveal the truth about one of Ireland’s best-loved writers
but to chronicle the birth and teething pains of the
new Irish Free State with which he was intimately
involved. Probably best known for his novel
Deoraíocht (Diaspora), this film will be of great interest
to those studying Leaving Certificate Irish.

The first French film to win the Palme d’Or at
Cannes in 21 years, Entre les murs is based on a 2006
novel of the same name by François Bégaudeau. A
semi-autobiographical account of his experiences as a
literature teacher in an inner city middle school in
Paris, the film also stars François in the role of the
teacher, as he prepares for a new year at a high
school in a tough neighbourhood. Laurent Cantet’s
excellent film is a story of life in a contemporary
French classroom, where cultures and attitudes
clash, and the teacher’s methods are put to the test
by his challenging students.

Margarethe von Trotta’s emotional drama about two
teenagers, Sophie and Konrad, who become separated
when the Berlin Wall is built. Kept apart for 28 years
they see each other only four times, one of which
results in the birth of their son. When the Wall finally
comes down in 1989 they get the chance to meet up
again. This romantic epic gives an excellent insight
into recent German history as well being a powerful
story of lost love and missed opportunities.
This original and comic film of Ostalgie weaves historic
themes into a tender family story that begins in
November 1989. Brother and sister (Alex and Ariane)
are determined to protect their mother from shock
when she awakens from a coma after the Berlin Wall
has fallen. Hilarious scenes ensue as they endeavour
to keep reality out until it all becomes impossible to
maintain.

From Ken Loach, the director of The Wind that Shakes
the Barley, comes a hope-filled comedy about a
Manchester postman on the verge of a breakdown.
Struggling with his two delinquent stepsons, unpaid
bills and a longing for the love of his ex-wife, Man
United fanatic Eric Bishop can see no way out. One
night his all-time hero and Man United legend Eric
Cantona (played by himself) appears to him in a
vision. The ever-philosophical Frenchman becomes
Eric’s life coach, appearing regularly to encourage
him towards a more positive outlook on life. When
one of his stepson’s becomes embroiled with some
shady local characters, Eric, with the guidance of
Cantona, is forced to call on the support of his friends
and colleagues to overcome his woes and see life as a
team sport once again.
The Irish Film Classification Office (www.ifco.ie) is
responsible for examining and certifying all cinema
films and videos/DVDs distributed in Ireland. In this
special event, IFCO will meet TY students and talk
about their 15A classification of the tough and often
violent film, Sin Nombre, and the different contexts in
which violence is portrayed in film.

Set amid the world of gangsters and Central American
immigrants seeking new life in the U.S., Sin Nombre is
part road movie and part love story. Focusing on
Honduran teenager Sayra, travelling with countless
others across the border on a freight train and Casper,
a member of the vicious Mara gang who decides to
escape gang life, the two join up and make a desperate
run for their lives.

Ray Eddy is a store clerk who is battling financial
difficulty to feed her two sons and move out of their
dilapidated home. While searching for her gambler
husband she comes across Lila Littlewolf, a Mohawk
bingo parlour worker who lives on a reservation
which straddles the U.S./Canadian border. With both
suffering economic hardship, they form an unlikely
alliance and begin trafficking illegal immigrants in the
trunk of Ray’s car across the frozen St. Lawrence
River to the U.S. This critically acclaimed film
bridges the uneasy relationship between the Mohawk
reservation and the surrounding communities, and
highlights the plight of immigrants desperate to enter
the U.S.
Waveriders is the previously untold story of the
unlikely Irish roots of the worldwide surfing
phenomenon and today’s pioneers of Irish big wave
surfing. The story unfolds via the inspirational and
ultimately tragic history of Irish/Hawaiian legendary
waterman, George Freeth. Son of an Irishman, Freeth
was responsible for the rebirth of this sport of
Hawaiian kings in the early twentieth century. With its
distinguished cast of world-renowned Irish, British
and Irish/American surfers, Waveriders journeys
from Hawaii to California and back to Irish shores
following Freeth’s wave of influence. This journey
reaches a spectacular climax when the surfers
conquer the biggest swell ever to have been ridden in
Ireland, catching monster waves of over fifty feet.

Set during the Tang Dynasty in China, House of Flying
Daggers tells the story of Mei (played by Zhang Ziyi), a
beautiful young assassin from a highly secretive antigovernment organisation. Posing as a blind dancer, she
lures the police to the Flying Daggers’ secret location
with the help of police officer Jin, also a mole for the
Daggers. Directed by one of China’s most talented and
internationally renowned directors Zhang Yimou, House
of Flying Daggers contains stunningly choreographed
martial arts sequences, Oscar-nominated cinematography
and intriguing plot twists. A visual treat that demands
to be seen on the big screen.
The McMurdo research station in inhospitable
Antarctica seems a magnet for the dreamers and
eccentrics who are Werner Herzog’s kind of people, as
he does double-duty as director and quizzical
on-screen guide in this witty, wise documentary.
He finds divers who venture daringly beneath the
ice-cap without a tether attached and
environmentalists testing the quality of emissions
by taking samples in the mouth of an active volcano.
Herzog’s film highlights the important work that is
being carried out in one of our most spectacular,
treacherous and fragile environments.

Workshop
One hour workshop focusing on stylistic elements
used in the film and Zhang Yimou’s approach to the
martial arts genre. Drawing from the Wider Visions
study guide, students will get an opportunity to view
and discuss moments from the film with a particular
emphasis on how camerawork, special effects,
costume and colour combine to create mood and
affect the narrative. Of particular interest to TY
students and those studying Leaving Certificate Art.

This newly released title concerns the compelling
and moving tale of Sandra Laing, born in 1955 to
white Afrikaner parents in South Africa. As a result of
a chance combination of her parents’ genes,
Sandra was dark-skinned, had thick curly hair and
black-African features. None of this would have
mattered very much in a different time or place, but
in 1950’s South Africa Sandra’s appearance was
hugely controversial. Skin follows Sandra’s thirty-year
journey from rejection to acceptance, betrayal to
reconciliation, as she struggles to define her place in
a changing world. Aimed at CSPE students, Skin
focuses on key topics such as human rights and
social responsibilities, the concept of community and
the importance of democracy.
Sounds Like Teen Spirit is an affectionate
documentary about the junior version of the annual
Eurovision song contest. Following the journey of four
aspiring pre-teens, from very different backgrounds
and parts of the continent (Cyprus, Bulgaria, Georgia
and Belgium) to Europe’s biggest child song-writing
contest. It celebrates a cast of real children with real
stories, aged ten to fifteen, coming together to battle
out their songs and performances to become the
winner of this fifth annual junior contest.

captures the innocence of childhood and the

Fantastic Mr. Fox is visionary director Wes Anderson’s
first animated film, utilising classic handmade stop
motion techniques to tell the story of the best selling
childrens’ book by Roald Dahl. Mr and Mrs Fox live an
idyllic home life with their son Ash and visiting young
nephew Kristopherson. But after 12 years, the bucolic
existence proves too much for Mr Fox’s wild animal
instincts. Soon he slips back into his old ways as a
sneaky chicken thief endangering not only his family,
but the whole animal community. Trapped underground
and with not enough food to go around, the animals
band together to fight against the evil farmers – Boggis,
Bunce and Bean – who are determined to capture the
audacious, fantastic Mr Fox at any cost.
Fresh Film Festival is a showcasing body for the work
of young filmmakers between the ages of 7 and 18
years. This showcase of a selection of 2009 entries
will demonstrate what it’s all about.

Tribute to John Hughes (1950-2009)
American writer, director and producer John Hughes sadly passed away on August 6th. Probably best known for
giving us a host of classic teen-orientated films in the 1980’s such as The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink and
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, these films defined the high school experience for a generation and were notable for
their fresh, funny and unpatronising take on teenage life. Join us at the IFI for a unique opportunity to see two of
John Hughes’ most famous and enjoyable films on the big screen and celebrate the work of this visionary
American filmmaker.

Matthew Broderick gives a career-defining
performance as the charming Ferris Bueller, a
scheming and resourceful high school student who
invents an illness to skip school on a sunny spring
day. Joined by his girlfriend Sloane and his reluctant
best friend Cameron they head off for a day of
free-spirited fun in downtown Chicago in Cameron’s
father’s borrowed Ferrari. News of Ferris’ exaggerated
illness sparks an outpouring of sympathy from his
fellow students. However his sister Jeanie and Dean of
Students Mr. Rooney are not convinced, and both set
out to track him down. John Hughes’ classic comedy
remains one of American cinema’s most entertaining,
inspirational and hilarious high school movies.

1990, yet remaining to be one of the most celebrated
live-action comedies of all time, this film is the perfect
choice to help kick start your Christmas holidays.
Written and produced by John Hughes, the film stars
Macaulay Culkin as Kevin McCallister, an eight yearold-boy who is mistakenly left behind when his family
flies to Paris for their Christmas vacation. While enjoying
the initial freedom of living alone, his circumstances
change once faced with the challenge of preventing
two burglars from robbing his house. Kevin is quick to
react by single-handedly inventing a series of hilarious
booby-traps which create chaos for the intruders.
