JMU President’s Welcome
May 2015
Dear Members of the Virginia Academy of Science and the Junior
Academy of Science:
On behalf of the faculty, staff and students in the JMU community, I am
pleased to welcome you to the campus of James Madison University.
We are delighted that you have chosen our campus as the location for
your 2015 session – the 93rd annual meeting of the academy.
The rate of scientific discovery has increased dramatically since the
Virginia Academy of Science was founded in 1923. It seems almost
daily we learn of some new scientific breakthrough that will help improve
the quality of the human condition or aid in our understanding of the
universe.
Virginia is a leader in this arena and many significant discoveries have
occurred on the campuses of Virginia’s outstanding colleges and
universities. At JMU, for example, undergraduate and graduate students
and faculty are partnering in meaningful research, finding solutions to
some of society’s most pressing issues in areas such as alternative
energy, healthcare and information security.
As a leading comprehensive public university, JMU is proud of the many
opportunities our undergraduate and graduate students have to
participate in important research.
James Madison University has pledged to attract more students in the
sciences, and to encourage them toward careers in teaching our K-12
students. We need to better prepare those influential elementary, middle
and high school teachers who will shape generations to come and
inspire the innovation of the future.
While you are visiting us, I hope you will have the opportunity to tour our
beautiful and cutting-edge campus facilities, and enjoy the sights of the
picturesque Shenandoah Valley. My best wishes to you for an enjoyable
and informative meeting.

A Tale of Two Symbioses: Taking a “Citizen Science”
Approach to Understanding Plant-microbe Interactions
Stephanie Stockwell
James Madison University
Dr. Stockwell is an Assistant Professor in Applied Biotechnology within
the Department of Integrated Science and Technology at JMU. She
earned a B.S. in Bacteriology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison
in 2001 and a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Dartmouth College in
2008. In the lab, Dr. Stockwell’s research team uses recombinant DNA
technologies to dissect the ways in which bacteria sense and respond to
changing environments. Additional scholarly interests include teaching
methods to foster deep learning and curricular design for the
development of transferable skills. Her commitment to break down
barriers between science and society, by involving novice and nonscientists in the scientific process, motivates her to engage with
sustained K-12 STEM education outreach and the interdisciplinary JMU
Honors Program. To achieve this end, she has taken a “Citizen Science”
approach in which high school students collect and verify environmental
isolates from soil samples while JMU undergraduate researchers
perform the more sophisticated genetic analyses. In doing so, she has
created a symbiosis between educators and students as a means to
meet shared scientific and educational goals.

George W. Jeffers Memorial Lecture
An Age for Measurement:
STEM Prior to the Industrial Revolution
Eric Pyle
James Madison University
The Age of Enlightenment of the 17th and 18th Centuries provided a
framework of thinking that led to modern science as we understand it
today. This new capacity for reason allowed Western Civilization to
measure the physical world and the heavens with greater precision than
had been known in all of human history before. But measuring the
heavens led people to measure the Earth in ways that resolved both
practical questions of borders between peoples but opened up new
questions on the structure of the Earth. This focus on precision in
measurement made possible the reproducible machinery of the Industrial
Revolution. Appearing as a Surveyor in Colonial Virginia, Dr. Eric J. Pyle
of the JMU Department of Geology & Environmental Science will share
how measuring the Mason-Dixon line depended on a 6-foot tall telescope
and a fir rod, why lodestones were worth their weight in silver, and how
determining the mass of the Earth relied on a really good clock. These
stories share how solid science could be conducted under extraordinary
circumstances and how important field-based science is to science as a
whole.

Sydney S. Negus Memorial Lecture
Botanical Explorations in the Galápagos Islands:
From Darwin till Today
Conley K. McMullen
James Madison University
Dr. McMullen received his B.S. (Biology) from Eastern Mennonite
College, M.S. (Biology) from James Madison University, and Ph.D.
(Botany) from the University of Maryland at College Park. At JMU, he
teaches Organisms (Bio 114) and four upper division plant courses, is
director of the herbarium, and serves on the E. J. Carrier Arboretum
Advisory Board. His research focuses on the eastern U.S. and the
Galápagos Islands (floristics, systematics, pollination biology). He has
spoken widely and authored numerous scientific papers, including his
book Flowering Plants of the Galápagos. He has served on the Flora
Advisory Board for the Flora of Virginia Project, and for many years has
been a group leader at the West Virginia Wildflower Pilgrimage. He has
served the Association of Southeastern Biologists as Secretary; the
Society of Herbarium Curators as Executive Board member and editor of
The Vasculum; the Southern Appalachian Botanical Society as
President; and is currently President-Elect of the Virginia Academy of
Science. Additionally, he is an Honorary Research Associate of the
Brooklyn Botanic Garden, a member of the Science Advisory Board of
Galápagos Conservancy, an elected Fellow of The Linnean Society of
London, and an elected Governing Member of the Charles Darwin
Foundation for the Galápagos Islands.

Selected Programs of the Virginia Academy of Science
The Virginia Journal of Science is America’s fourth largest state
academy journal in circulation (after New York, Chicago, and Ohio) and
goes to 47 states and 12 countries overseas. A professionally refereed
quarterly, The Journal publishes original research articles and research
notes in the various disciplines of science, mathematics, and
engineering: cross-disciplinary papers on advances in science and
technology and their impact on society are invited. Minutes of The
Academy and notices are also published. Many significant contributions
were first published in The Journal and its articles have a high rate of
citation. Authors are allowed the first 15 pages, including figures, without
charge ($50 per page for the 16 th subsequent pages). Subscription rates
are $40.00 per year. Selected back issues available.
For additional information, contact Werner Wieland at
[email protected] or 540-654-1414.
Virginia Scientists, the Academy’s newsletter is published three times
yearly and serves to communicate information about the Academy;
regional conferences; various state science institutions; organizations,
agencies, and corporations; and Virginia’s researchers, science
educators, and their students. Articles and notices are cordially invited.
In addition to members, it is sent to Virginia legislators, selected
agencies, and college and university presidents.
For information, contact Deborah Neely-Fisher at
[email protected].
The Virginia Junior Academy of Science is one of the Nation’s
foremost junior academies. In addition to the nationally recognized
annual refereed paper competition involving hundreds of volunteers,
VJAS and VAS programs reach about 40,000 Virginia secondary
students each year. Over $80,000 in scholarships, prizes, research
support grants, trips to national meetings and events are awarded
annually. Scientists and science educators are encouraged to adopt
school science programs, classes, and clubs; to provide information on
Academy programs; and to foster new clubs and opportunities for
Virginia’s youth.
