In 1910, Goon Dip, a prominent businessman in Seattle’s Chinese American
community, led a group of Asian American pioneers to form the Kong Yick Investment
Company. With no financial backing from a bank, the investment company pooled
money from approximately 170 community members to fund the construction of two
twin buildings that would serve as the anchor of a new Chinatown. The East Kong
Yick Building—Wing Luke Asian Museum’s permanent home— is one of two buildings
erected, the other being the West Kong Yick.
HAPPY 100TH
BIRTHDAY,
EAST KONG YICK!
Throughout the years, the East Kong Yick served as a social and information hub and
housed retail businesses on the first floor. This four-story hotel provided lodging for
male Chinese laborers, then also for Japanese and Filipinos as they arrived in Seattle.
Some women were here at the time of the building creation and they built family
apartments for the second generation along Canton Alley and on the 8th Avenue
side. The buildings therefore were always viewed as a place to set down roots, raise
families and build a lasting community here in the U.S.
Seattle’s Chinatown-International District is the only place in the continental United
States where Chinese, Japanese, Filipinos, Vietnamese and others settled together
and built one neighborhood. By settling in the East Kong Yick Building, the Wing
Luke Asian Museum works to inspire the preservation of other historic buildings in
the area and bring thousands of visitors to support the many neighboring shops and
restaurants.
100 years marks a century of stories, history, struggle and deep roots of the Asian
Pacific American community in Seattle, as well as the hopes, opportunities and
future that our visionary pioneers had in mind when they invested in building the East
Kong Yick and our neighborhood, Chinatown-International District. Our event will
honor the significance of this important symbol for the Museum and area. As the only
pan-Asian Pacific American museum in the nation and the first Smithsonian affiliate in
the Pacific Northwest, we have been able to greatly expand our public programming
and welcome over 50,000 visitors, students, and educators, through our doors during
our first year, an increase of more than fourfold from our previous location.
We invite you to join the celebration on Saturday, April 17 to commemorate
the 100 year anniversary of our home, the East Kong Yick. Festivities include an
art auction with works by celebrated Asian Pacific American and Northwest artists,
authentic family-style dinner, lively entertainment and special guests. Get ready to
bid on original works of art, incredible wines and exciting opportunities, including
a framed Chine-collé print by distinguished artist Roger Shimomura, Puget Sound
fishing trip for two with Seattle Mariners Manager Don Wakamatsu, dinner for 12
at the home of Tomoko and Koji Matsuno with chef Eric Tanaka— executive chef of
Tom Douglas Restaurants and Iron Chef America winner, and much more. This is the
museum’s largest fundraising event of the year, with proceeds benefiting our programs
and operations. We look forward to celebrating with you!

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
“I brought my granddaughters here today. A great opportunity to learn the beauties
and hardships of Asian immigrant cultures. They are not learning this in school…This is a
beautiful and tranquil place.”
“…this space of fragrant timber, light that is graceful and strong stories. This space feels
promising, assuring, questing. And perhaps that is why I like it so.”
“the museum is ALIVE! I can feel the spirits, the history! It gave me chills…”

Could a 100-year old building filled with pigeons find new life as a destination
and resource for all people? Beginning life in 1910 it was a center for living, working and business. The
transformation into the new Wing Luke Asian Museum reclaimed one of too many vacant buildings in a
culturally rich neighborhood, and provided a new business anchor helping revitalize the historic ChinatownInternational District. Offered daily are guided tours of the building and the neighborhood, and a myriad of
personal stories, creations and programs for anyone to experience.
Congratulations and grateful thanks to all of you for helping seek and secure the Wing Luke Asian
Museum’s new life and future. I hope you will take pride in the many awards received in the past year:
Historical Restoration, Merit Award, awarded by the Associated Builders and Contractors of Western
Washington (ABC) at its 2009 Excellence in Construction Awards for 15 outstanding projects.
Great Places Award, awarded by the Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA) honoring seven
exemplary projects internationally for demonstrating excellence as a human environment.
International Interior Design Association’s 36th Annual Interior Design Competition. Olson Sundberg
Kundig Allen Architect’s design for the Wing Luke Asian Museum was one of six winning projects.
Historic Seattle Preservation Award: Best Adaptive Reuse to acknowledge businesses, organizations,
and individuals whose projects, advocacy, stewardship, and education demonstrate community excellence
in preserving and protecting built heritage.
Seattle’s Least Endangered Historic Spots, a 2010 list by SeattlePI.com highlighting positive examples
of preserved historically significant places. Criteria included an owner committed to preservation; healthy
business occupying the space and generating dependable revenue; mixed use; and aesthetic distinction.
Special thanks to an extraordinary team who made our Centennial Year an occasion to celebrate,
including Homesight; Marpac Construction; Rick Sundberg and the Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen (now
Olson Kundig) Architects team; Ron Chew; Stuart Grover; The Collins Group; the Museum’s Board, staff,
members and donors.
Happy New Year of the Tiger, a very special year as a historic building, site of the Museum’s new
home, celebrates its 100th birthday!

toward aspects of Japanese American
identity and the effects that popular culture stereotypes of Asian and Asian Americans
have upon the development of society’s perception of Asian Americans.
This exhibition is the first time that Shimomura’s art is shown with the memorabilia
and objects depicting stereotypes of Asians and Asian Americans that the artist has
accumulated, both of which are largely based on representations informed by the
yellow peril. Displayed together, the collection creates a unique framework through
which to view Shimomura’s paintings and prints. The memorabilia is re-contextualized
in Shimomura’s work producing a rich dialogue between art and object, representation
and identity, ultimately engaging the viewer.

In Cultural Transcendence, five Asian Pacific
Islander American artists exhibit works that
focus on a step forward from traditional to
new media: materials expanding beyond
their inherent meanings. Their conceptual
themes peer into history but do not dwell on
a negative past— inequality, discrimination
and alienation; instead they search the
present and envision a better tomorrow.
Cultural Transcendence explores the
importance of technology in our modern
experience and technology’s influence on
contemporary installation art.

An American Diary, a lecture by Roger Shimomura
Roger Shimomura will present An American Diary, a 60-minute lecture on his
work spanning over 40 years. Listen to how his work has been propelled by
various historical and political events, as well as his own physical environment

memorabilia to World War II stereotypes of Asian people.
Shimomura’s paintings, prints and theatre pieces address sociopolitical issues
of Asian America and have often been inspired by diaries kept by his late
immigrant grandmother for 56 years of her life. Shimomura received his B.A.
from the University of Washington, Seattle, and his M.F.A. from Syracuse
University, New York. He has had over 125 solo exhibitions of paintings and
