assembly Plant.
After an early morning drive down I-5
to the plant, Boeing meets us with a
tour bus and takes us on a private
guided tour that is much better than
the tour you get if you go to the tour
center.
Minimum height for kids is 4’-2”
(127cm) Dress and footwear restrictions also apply and members must
provide citizenship info (similar to
border crossing info).
There is no cost for the plant tour, but
we make a lunch stop on Whidbey
Island as a part of the scenic return
trip, so there are lunch costs and a
ferry crossing to budget for.
Register early! Registration preference
given to members and their families
who have not previously been on this
tour. Registration is available via the

Maintaining Contact
By the time you read this issue of
Ausblick we will be well into our summer
events. If you haven’t been to an event yet
this summer, you owe it to yourself and
your Bimmer to attend an event.
Events are what our club is and
always has been about. As you can see
from the event listings in this issue, we
don’t do meetings in some meeting room;
we meet at club events and have fun.
Recent event attendance has been
great with some events having well over
40 and 50 cars. Most events are even
suitable for the entire family.
I’d heartily recommend both the
upcoming Member Day and the annual
Concours and BMW Heritage event in
August as two events not to miss, as they
are local low cost and can be attended
and enjoyed by the entire family.
Both events provide a great way to get
to meet fellow members and share our
love for the cars we enjoy. Our members
are the proud owners of some 430+
examples of BMWs finest, and thanks to
the BC climate we have a wonderful cross
section from rare vintage classics, to
beloved older daily drivers as well as
many new cars.
So be sure to plan to attend an
upcoming event, I’m confident you will
be glad you did.
We have some catching up to do in
the news department:
Last fall, our president Jim Westmacott was fortunate enough to be one of the
BMW Club of Canada representatives at
the International Council of BMW Clubs
meeting in Germany. Both the BMW Club
of Canada and its member clubs play an
active role in the International Council,
and Phil Abrami the BMW CC president
was voted to serve a term as Vice Chair
Automobiles on the Council. In addition,
at that meeting, Canada through our club
presented a nomination for the Dr.
Volume 7 No. 1 2004
by Rolf Drommer - Member Services
Gerhard Knöchlein Mobile Tradition
award. We were pleased that our Canadian
nomination resulted in local club member
Sultan Karim receiving this first of its kind
distinguished award. For those who have
met Sultan at club events, you will know
that the award which “honours individuals from the international network of
BMW Clubs who have rendered an
outstanding contribution to the promotion of BMW’s heritage by ensuring the
optimal upkeep of their historic BMWs
and by making them accessible to the
public through active involvement in
events” went to a very deserving enthusiast
who has been quite active with the vintage
BMWs he has owned.
In other areas, our BC 8 series owners
made their mark when they traveled to the
West Coast 8 Fest in Gaberville CA to be
part of a gathering of 84 8 series BMWs
from all over the west coast and indeed all
parts of North America.
Our AGM saw the election of several
new board members, and it has been great
to see them get involved in the activities of
the club.
The BMW Club of Canada was also
fortunate to get a two page article about
the Canadian clubs published in the BMW
Magazine which is sent out to all owners
of BMW that are less than 5 years old. It
promises to the start of more coverage of
BMW Club life in Canada, and as we are
one of the largest clubs in the country, I’m
sure future issues will contain info about
our club.
As you have read elsewhere in this
issue, we are trying to get back on track in
getting regular newsletters out to the
members. Contributions and helpers on
the newsletter crew are always welcomed.
It is a good way to be a part of your club.
I look forward to seeing as many
members as possible at some of the
upcoming events.

BMW Club of Canada
204 - 2435 Welcher Ave
Port Coquitlam, BC V3C 1X8
The BMW Club of Canada is a member of the
International Council of BMW Clubs.
A Note from National
It is my pleasure as President of the
BMW Club of Canada to offer a few words
on the occasion of the Prof. Dr.Gerharft
Knöchlein Award ceremony in honor of
Sultan Karim. My regrets and apologies
for not being able to be at your AGM in
person but family matters prevent my
attendance. The Prof. Dr.Gerharft
Knöchlein BMW Mobile Tradition award is
the first international award given to a
member of the BMW Club of Canada. It is
fitting that Sultan receive this recognition.
His love of the marque and dedication to
preservation of historic BMWs is important. But equally important is his
willingness to share these beautiful and
unique cars with club members. In doing
these things Sultan embodies what it
means to be a club member. Than you,
Sultan, and congratulations for an award
well deserved.
Where does one start when there has
been a gap in communication?
The first thing would be to explain
and apologize for the lack of club
newsletters since last fall. I’ll make no
grand excuses, just simply state the facts,
and that is that other things have a way of
getting in the way, and every time it was
time to get a newsletter done, it ended up
being delayed to the point it got put on
the back burner completely.
As your default newsletter editor, I’d
like to apologize for the issues I missed. At
the board level we have started to explore
options that will help us get back on track
and get regular newsletters out to the
members.
This shortened issue is our start, and
we should have a full sized issue out by
the end of July with past event coverage
and additional news and info about
upcoming events.
Fortunately a lot of our members are
on email, and a large number of them
also frequent our web site and the
electronic forum. For those inclined to
numbers, we have 328 members subscribed to our email news list and 162
members on the forum out of a total
master membership of 335. Our total
membership, (master members and
associates) stands at 450 BMW enthusiasts.
A lot has transpired since the last full
issue of the newsletter was put in the mail.
Most of what has happened has been
documented on the web site, and several
partially completed issues of the newsletter from last fall are available as PDF files
for viewing in our member newsletter
archive section
One of the stumbling blocks to getting
the newsletter completed is the text that
goes with past event stories and pictures.
You as a member can help in that regard.
After an event, simply jot down some of
your impressions and thoughts about an
event and send them off to us as an email.
It will help us put content into the
newsletter.
For that matter, any stories and
content you have that are club and BMW
related are appreciated. As you know in
the past we have worked really hard to
focus on our club and our members in the
newsletter and we’d like to keep it that
way. It seems much more club like and
member oriented than printing the latest
press releases from BMW.
On the positive side of things, it has
been great to see so many members,
including quite a few new faces at the
events we have hosted so far in 2004. As
you can see from the Road Ahead section
in this issue we have quite a few great
events planned between now and August,
and we have more planned for the rest of
the year, and will report on those events in
more detail in the next issue.
In closing, this is your club, so in
addition to participating in the events we
host for you the member, take a bit of
time and send us some newsletter
contributions. Every little bit helps. And
for those who feel more ambitious, feel
free to volunteer to become part of the
newsletter team. We’ve already got a few
names, but more helpers would certainly
make the workload easier, and enable us
to deliver a club newsletter that is written
from the members’ perspective.

Where did the Classified
Ads go?
Our classified ads section has gone on-line
and is available electronically as a self serve
portion of our electronic forum on our web site.
So many of our members have web access,
and in this day and age, print ads can be out of
date by the time you get the newsletter.
In addition to easy and free posting access for
members, non members and visitors to our site
can browse your ads increasing exposure beyond
just that of the distribution afforded in Ausblick.
Our members also have access to the BMW Club of
Canada web site which also has an electronic
forum with a classified ads section, thus
increasing your exposure to all Canadian BMW
enthusiasts.
If you do not have web access, and would like
an ad posted on your behalf, please contact Rolf
Drommer or Thomas Fink, and we’ll arrange to
post on your behalf.

Our club grill badges were made by
the German company Carl Poellath Münz
und Prägewerk Schrobenhausen GmbH &
Co. KG that makes possibly the best grill
badges in the world. At least for German
cars like our BMWs. (They have been in
business since 1780.)
The grill badges are high quality
precision die stamped, nickel plated, and
then the colors are applied and the finish
is baked, for a high quality baked enamel
end product that will stand up to years of
use on your car.
We have already delivered grill badges
to many members who pre ordered them.
Now it is your turn to get one of these
limited edition badges for your car.
Truly a high quality piece that you
can proudly mount on your car or use to
mount on a plaque in your den or what
have you. Every member should buy one.
Here are the details you need to know:
Our original order was for 100 pieces.
The price is $45 CDN for the remaining
stock we have on hand.
Thomas or Rolf will gladly take your
order for one or more units, and we will
arrange for payment and pick up of your
grill badge.
Don’t be left out, you’ll see them on
cars at club events, and we are sure you’ll
want to order a grill badge for yourself.
(Restricted to members only.)
