A Report from SCTA’s Leaders
Leading this organization is a privilege and we thank
you for the opportunity to serve. Whether it’s advocating
at the highest levels of our government, speaking to the
press, various organizations or a group of professional truck
drivers, or just being at the countless places we need to be,
we consider it an honor and take our duties seriously.
The challenges of leadership have never been more
direct or difficult. SCTA maintains a high profile simply
because trucking is a fundamental industry, and because
our issues substantially touch all segments of the economy.
Finding and maintaining consensus is paramount for
keeping diverse organizations like ours together, so your
active involvement is crucial.
When other associations and our partners in the
business community have difficulties with trucking issues
and concerns over regulations, proposed restrictions and
other initiatives that they have no expertise or stomach for,
they turn to us. And we work constantly to maintain the
network and credibility to ensure effective collaboration.
As we say: “Trucking is everybody’s business.”
Consider the overwhelming government-created
impediments in the way of truck-operator freedom:
Driver qualifications, liability, regulatory and technology
mandates, plus our failing and overburdened infrastructure.
It’s hard to imagine a more daunting manifesto, particularly
considering how complicated our government system is.
Our federal government is easy to loathe. We witness
its dysfunction, and are concerned that our own state
government has been trending in the same direction.
Creating small fixes instead of making the hard decisions
that are necessary for long-term sustainability and growth
has become commonplace.
The best way to counter this and ensure success going
forward is to increase our capabilities and strength. The old
ways of getting big things done easily and inexpensively
simply through relationships and a few grassroots calls are
gone. Anybody with a laptop computer and a web-presence
can claim significance. There’s a group – and a willing
consultant - for every interest now. To win, SCTA must be
willing to get engaged in a myriad of ways, some costly.
Modern advocacy is neither cheap, nor for the faint of heart.
Our task isn’t made easier with the impacts of continued

Chairman, SCTA
consolidation and small business/fleet attrition. These
events not only impact our membership and revenues,
but also our participation levels, leadership and political
calculus. That translates into more obligations on the rest of
us. It will take a long-term, enthusiastic, all-in commitment
from all sectors of the commercial trucking industry.
Despite the shrinking number of substantial-sized,
home-grown fleets, SCTA can still “grow.” Targeting fleets
that aren’t active should be a priority for us all. We’ve got
the talent, we’ve just got to find, develop, and harness it.
Help us identify our stars and those who can rise and help
us meet our challenges.
Our newsletters and Capitol Reports highlight our
efforts and the work we’ve got to do. What you don’t see is
the substantial time and effort we expend behind the scenes
on your behalf – putting out fires and keeping the “peace.”
This is work you can’t see or do because you are focused on
your business. You invest in SCTA so that we can.
SCTA is like trucking – we just keep running. During
this meeting, Jerry Smith will be installed as the next
Chairman of the Board. His journey to this point is a great
story and it would be hard to craft a resume that would
better qualify him for this leadership role. We continue to
be blessed to have the right man (or woman) in the right
place at the right time.
For our time together, our planning committees
have assembled another exceptional program. And our
Allied Committee sponsors have once again stepped up
generously. Please show your gratitude and support by
doing business with them whenever and wherever possible.
SCTA’s mission is “To Collaborate, Educate and Advocate
for Successful Trucking Operations.” This meeting is just
one way we fulfill it.
Thanks for being part of SCTA’s “truck dynasty.” We
thank you for the support you’ve provided SCTA over the
years, and particularly the support you’ve shown us most
recently.
We wish you well as you enjoy the human and natural
resources that we have at this special SCTA meeting.

Our roots go back to 1932 when James H. “Bo” Shealy opened a truck service garage at the corner of Sumter and
Washington Streets in Columbia. Bo acquired the Mack dealership for the Columbia area in 1940. His brother, Carl
joined the business in 1947. Currently the business is owned by Carl’s sons, Bruce and David. Shealy Truck Center
now serves the Midlands and Upstate of South Carolina and Western North Carolina from full service dealership
facilities in Columbia and in Duncan, SC. Shealy is pleased to represent four premium truck brands: Mack, Volvo,
Western Star and Isuzu along with the Clement line of trailers. Shealy offers a full range of services including
maintenance agreements, all-makes parts, a fully certified Natural Gas repair facility, daily rental trucks, and
full service lease options. The trucking industry has changed a great deal over the years. Undoubtedly, we will
see more changes in years to come. However, some things never change - things such as the importance of the
dignity of work and of caring for the business, for its people and for its customers. We appreciate the friendship
and goodwill of the folks associated with the trucking industry. We extend our best wishes to everyone for success
and good fortune.

Thermo King Columbia has a solid reputation of providing excellent service, support, and satisfaction. We have been servicing South
Carolina for over 31 years with locations in Columbia, Florence, Charleston. Thermo King manufactures transport temperature control
systems for a variety of mobile applications, including trailers, truck bodies, buses, shipboard containers and railway cars. We also offer
APUs, specifically the Thermo King TriPac. The TriPac is an EPA- verified APU unit that provides drivers with bunk heat, engine preheat,
air conditioning, accessory power and battery charging while reducing idling and conserving fuel. Since idle time is reduced, wear and
tear on the truck engine is also reduced. With its 2,000-hour maintenance interval, TriPac is now even more owner-friendly, allowing
maintenance to be performed at the same time as maintenance on the tractor, saving time and eliminating additional downtime for
APU maintenance. We strive to give our customers the best service available, the best parts and accessories, and a staff that understands
all aspects of our business. We pride ourselves with setting the standard for driver comfort and fuel savings. Come by and see our new
Columbia Facility opening in September at 30 Sonntag Drive, conveniently located on the frontage road along I-26 at exit 125.
