Campaign Update - St. Benedict Parish
Striving to know, love, and serve God in all others.
The Pastor’s Two Cents
Thank you!!!
The 46th Annual Parish Festival is now history. It
will be a while before we know the full results of the
festival; however, it seemed to me that there were very
few glitches. Things flowed smoothly, were well organized and I saw many people having fun, laughing, eating and enjoying each other’s company.
All of this would not have been possible if it were
not for all those who made it possible by your hard
work, patience and sacrifice. This is just one way that
you show your love for Christ and the church. This
event is not just about raising money, although that is
also very important. This event is also about young and
old working together as the Body of Christ. What a
wonderful example you are of that. I can only say
thank you for all that you did to make this festival a
success.
There is no way I could possibly repay you for your
service. I do not want to begin mentioning names because there are just too many to list and I fear in my
old age that I will forget someone. Each of you know
who you are. More importantly God knows who you
are. The Gospel reading for last Sunday said it so well.
Jesus said, “...blessed indeed will you be because of
their inability to repay you. For you will be repaid at
the resurrection of the righteous.” While parish festivals will come and go; God’s promise remains. May
God bless each of you for all you do to express your
faith in God and your love for the church.
Don’t forget, “The Lord is with you!

CAMPAIGN EXCEEDS
$600,000 GOAL!
We are pleased with the continuing
success of our Moving Forward in
Faith Capital Campaign. As of this
past week, we are nearing
$1,000,000. Thank you to all
the 523 parish families and individuals who have chosen to
participate! However, to be successful, we need the support of all
our parishioners. Pledges of all sizes are gratefully appreciated and
necessary. The more we raise
through this effort, the more we
will be able to accomplish as a parish family. Please remember, God
will not be outdone in generosity!

Before She Became Teresa
Born Agnes Gonxha (her middle name Gonxha, means “little flower” in Albanian) Bojaxhiu in Skopje, Yugoslavia.
Even before blossoming into her life as a religious sister, young Agnes Bojaxhiu showed signs of passionate devotion to Christ. Early on, she began celebrating her birthday on the day of her baptism, August 27. Who could have
predicted that this “little flower” would go on to serve the poorest of the poor thousands of miles away?
Life as a Young Sister
Captivated by stories of missionaries, Agnes left her family home in Skopje in 1928 at the age of 18 to join the Sisters of Loreto. “Be so kind to hear my sincere desire,” she humbly wrote to the Loreto Mother Superior. “I want to
join your Society, so that one day I may become a missionary sister, and work for Jesus who died for us all.”
Needing to learn English first, the young postulant spent six weeks in Loreto Abbey in Dublin, Ireland. She set
sail for India on December 1, 1928, to give her life to service.
Call within a Call
For years, Mother Teresa refused to talk about this seminal moment in her life. But worldwide interest in her “call
within a call” would not diminish. Reluctantly, she spoke about it. “God was calling me to give up all and to surrender myself to him in the service of the poorest of the poor in the slums.” The call happened on September 10,
1946, as she traveled by train from Calcutta to Darjeeling. Suddenly, a new mission presented itself. “To fail
would have been to break the faith,” she said.
Relief for Calcutta's Suffering
Mother Teresa opened wide the doors of mercy and charity for the poorest of the poor in Calcutta. It was her life’s
calling—what she considered to be an order from God. Mother Teresa directed her Missionaries of Charity to
serve “the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society, people who have become a burden to the society and are shunned by
everyone.”

LITTLE FLOWERS
Little Flowers is a Catholic club for girls ages 5 and up that
teaches virtues through scripture, saints’ biographies, the
Catechism of the Catholic Church and the spirituality of St.
Therese, the Little Flower of Liseaux. The program consists
of four wreaths of nine virtues each. Like a scouting program, girls earn badges for the virtues they have practiced,
and life skills they have learned. We have field trips, a service project and each year, a Mother’s Day Tea! Our group
is growing by leaps and bounds. Our new year starts on
September 25. Call Karen Neubecker at 396-0989 for info.

STRESS IN YOUR MARRIAGE?
Retrouvaille (pronounced retro-vi, meaning rediscovery) is
a program for married couples who feel disillusioned, frustrated or angry in their marriage. Some experience coldness.
Others experience conflict in their relationship. Sometimes
life-changing events occur (car accident, illness) and most
don’t know how to change the situation or even communicate with their spouses about it. This program has helped
tens of thousands of couples experiencing difficulties in
their marriage. For confidential information about or to register for the Fall program beginning with a weekend at
Notre Dame Retreat House on October 7-9, 2016, please
call 585-293-1552 or visit the web site at
www.HelpOurMarriage.com
Thoughts from Pope Francis,
from “Laudato Si,” On Care for Our Common Home…
In wealthy nations, the habit of wasting and discarding resources is astounding! We simply must address this, in part
for the sake of the poor. Fresh and available water is primary. It is essential for human life. Our supplies of water, once
abundant, are running low, and in some places “water poverty” has already appeared (27-28).

HELPING HANDS MINISTRY
We are very excited to announce that we will be starting a
new ministry. We know that in our community we have
many who are contractors, or professionals of different
trades related to home repairs. We also know that many
women and men in our community like to do home repairs.
We want to call these gifts forward in service of those
among us who find themselves facing immediate need for
home repairs but cannot afford to pay for such repairs. The
Helping Hands ministry intends to connect these parishioners in need with those who have the knowledge and the
willingness to help them out with such repairs. We invite
all, especially the contractors in our community, to prayerfully consider joining this ministry. If you want to volunteer or have any questions please contact Fr. Daniel at 3941220 x 11 or by email at [email protected].
