Summer 2015
What’s Old Becomes New and Beautiful
This past August, Cleveland took a
giant step to preserve history and
opened the newly restored League
Park Baseball field.
League park is located at the corner
of East 66th & Lexington Avenues. It
was the original home to Cleveland
baseball. The original park was built
in 1891 and housed the Cleveland
Spiders. The park was desned to be
historic from the start, as future Hall
of Famer Cy Young opened the park
pitching his first game.
In 1929, Babe Ruth hit his 500th
homerun and in 1941, Joln’ Joe
Dimaggio hit in his 56th straight game.
Bob Feller pitched his first major
league baseball game in 1936.
The 1940’s brought the Negro Baseball Leagues to League Park, and
again it became the home of the
Champions. The Cleveland Buckeyes
won the Negro American League
championship in 1943 and 1945 and
later in 1947 won the Negro World
Series.
The Cleveland Indians moved to
Municipal Stadium in 1946, leaving
the park to become the pracce filed
for the Cleveland Rams and later the
Browns. A!er many years of being a
jewel in the crown of Cleveland, the
park fell into disrepair and was parally demolished in the 1960’s.
Councilwoman Fannie Lewis was the
most ardent defender of League Park
and worked relessly to have the
park restored to it’s former glory. A
park dedicated to her completes the
the facility
1920 League Park saw the Cleveland
Indians beat the Brooklyn Dodgers for
their first-ever championship.
