Our Mission
Our Vision

inspiration that dissolves social barriers,
forms lasting connections and sets the stage
for future success.
Our Support
The Milagro Center is extremely grateful for the continued support of the very loyal

Our Miracle Makers
From Our Board Chair Kurt Knaus
Milagro was created in 1997 as a grass-roots cultural arts center for the largely underserved low-income population in and around Delray Beach. It was designed to offer
after-school and summer camp programs that use cultural arts as a focus to develop
self-confidence and creativity while improving low income children’s academic standings.
Like our community, Milagro is thriving and strong as a stable organization, and one
recognized for the quality of our programming. The Milagro center has been able to
achieve national accreditation, local certification, and has achieved both professional and
financial support from some of our community’s most notable agencies, organizations
and residents. Because of our consistent success in meeting outcomes, the successful
partnerships with other service agencies we have created, and the level of committed
staff, board, volunteers, and community supporters on our team, we believe that Milagro
demonstrates the effectiveness of an organization that keeps on moving forward, through
whatever obstacles or challenges are put in the way. We have worked diligently to ensure
that children have a safe place to come to during out-of-school times, where they can
become the very best versions of themselves, ultimately becoming our community’s new
leaders. Thank you for your continued support and interest in our organization and the
children and families we serve.

Milagro –
By the Numbers
Programs
The issues:
• The families and children we serve are
living at or below the federal poverty level.
• The community we serve has an 11% or
greater unemployment rate.
• Approximately 50% of students entering
9th grade in our local high schools read
below grade level.
• 70% of at-risk children DO NOT graduate
from high school and continue living
in poverty.
• The Education Commission of the States
published a report in March of 2012
stating that “minority and low income
students make up a disproportionate
share of students who are held back” in
the states each year.
• High school drop-outs cost our
community in multiple ways. The average
at-risk youth who becomes a career
criminal costs society between $1.4 and
$1.7 million over his lifetime. The average
drug abuser costs society $408,268 to $1,070,324. Even those who don’t turn to a life of crime
end up costing society an average of $268,133 to $428,130. (The Monetary Value of Saving a
High-Risk Youth, Journal of Quantitative Criminology, Vol. 14 No. 1 5-33).
Our results:
More than 260 children and youth served annually.
• Our Teen Program has grown from 5 students to over 25 students in just 2 years.
• Children in our on-site programs achieve a consistent 96% success rate in annual
grade promotion.
• 90% of our students demonstrate increased knowledge of and abilities in the arts.
• 85% of our students demonstrate improved self-esteem, self-confidence, and life skills.
• Benefits to the community include the promise of future productive residents, parents who
are engaged in their children’s lives and futures, growth and exposure to and of the arts, and
diminished costs in terms of social services related to homelessness, drug & alcohol abuse, teen
pregnancy, gang related violence, and general crime and law enforcement.

ARTreach
The Milagro Center reaches additional youth in
our community through our “ARTreach” program.
This program allows us to provide our unique and
specialized curriculum to children being served
by other organizations and expose them to the
arts and Living Values. It also allows us to utilize
our professional staff and facility more effectively.
By working with other agencies and pooling our
resources together we can more efficiently serve
greater numbers of children and make a lifealtering difference in their lives.
Mentoring
The center relies heavily on the support of its
volunteers and mentors. We would never see the
miracles that are achieved here without them.
This program connects youth with positive adult
role models and fosters nurturing, supportive,
intergenerational relationships that are essential
to building a child’s self esteem. Mentors
are required to make a minimum one-year
commitment and visits are on-site. 64% of our
currently active mentors have passed the oneyear commitment and continue to mentor their
assigned mentee; 43% are still with their mentee
after two years.
STARS
Our STARS program provides superior arts
instruction, Living Values education, academic
enrichment, and tutoring to children and youth
of families living at or below the federal poverty
level. These children are most often at risk of
school failure, drop-out, and cyclical poverty.
Younger children in low income neighborhoods
gain the most from quality after school programs.
Milagro Center gives children and youth the
opportunity to experience daily art and academic
enrichment in an environment that encourages
creativity, learning, and acceptance.
Teens
Our Teen program serves 25 middle and high
school youth, ages 13-18, during after school
hours at the center located on 6th Avenue.
The Teens receive homework assistance, art
instruction, Living Values Education, recreations,
as well as a coming-of-age component and
financial education. They are also provided
with literacy and math enhancement, SAT/ACT
preparation, and life skills training. The Teens
mentor younger students and receive community
service hours as they develop their leadership
skills. This is the center’s most recently formed
program and is supported largely through the
United Way of Palm Beach County.
