for doing Ice Bucket Challenge
My name is Claire Reilly. I’m writing
this because I’m going to do the Ice Bucket
Challenge on the Village Green this

talking to me, but only got a smile in return.
I’m not being unfriendly - it’s just that I‘m a

The Ice Bucket Challenge was always
about MND. It has probably done more for
MND in terms of publicity than anything else
in the 140 years since the disease was first
described. Several famous people, including
Bill Gates, George Bush and Justin Bieber
have taken to tipping iced water on their
heads to raise money for and awareness of
MND. That’s what I’m doing this Saturday
on the Village Green.

Vehicle crossings, surplus land and water issue
Mayor Damon Odey, Cr Steve Wills and
Land Transport manager, Mr Andrew Dixon,
were at this month’s Geraldine Community

Property vehicle crossing policy: The
board considered Mr Dixon’s report on the
enforcement of property vehicle crossings.
The District Services Committee (DSC)
approved the policy on vehicle crossing
standards at their April meeting, but
community boards delayed implementing
the policy until an enforcement policy
was approved. The board recommended
the DSC adopt a policy based on targeted
compliance.
Land for disposal: The board considered
a report by council’s property manager,
Matt Ambler, about land at Hopgood Lane
and Coles Street, Geraldine. These strips
of land, classified as local purpose reserve
by the Geraldine Borough Council in the
1980s to provide access to commercial
areas, are unlikely to be required for future
development as road. Council’s Policy and
Development committee has recommended
that the parcels of land be declared surplus,
and that council seeks the Minister of
Conservation’s approval to uplift the reserve
status. If that is successful, council will be
able to put this land up for sale.
Community engagement on water issues
in the Waihi and Temuka catchment: The
board agreed to co-host, with the zone
committee, a meeting to inform, and invite
feedback from, the Geraldine community
about stormwater management, preparation
for floods and water quality in the Waihi and
Temuka catchments. Board members Jan
Finlayson and Chris Fisher attended previous
zone committee meetings and supported
the idea, although Mr Fisher said he had
reservations about having a meeting this
early when the committee had just recently
been formed and was still at the “informationgathering stage”.
Geraldine Primary School plaque: A stone
plaque commemorating service during WWI
by ex-pupils of an unnamed school hangs in
the Geraldine Library Service Centre foyer.
Cr Stevens reported that the school referred
to was Geraldine Primary School. Board
member McGregor Simpson confirmed this,
explaining that the plaque was removed for
safe storage during school renovations. The
board decided to approach the principal to
seek the school’s decision on whether to have
the plaque restored to the school grounds or
to erect an accompanying sign or label which
will identify the school.

Artist John Badcock capturing

“A likeness is a superficial
thing,” says artist Mike
Deavoll. “It’s clever to do
it, but I want something
more lasting - that thing you
can’t see. You have to have
something to start with. Then,
it’s in the process and in the
materials; there’s something
mysterious in the materials.
“I think John’s involved in
that. He moves paint around,
big time; he’s trying to find
something in the paint. It’s
mysterious, unwordable,
a felt thing,” he says of his
friend and fellow Geraldine
artist John Badcock’s work.
John’s known for his
deeply-layered oil painting,
particularly portraiture, where
paint is often used so liberally
it will cast shadows. As John
says, “Sometimes it’s quite
sculptural - I’m carving into
paint. And every time you
look at the paintings they’re
different.”
He has a clear place in

NZ String Quartet in Geraldine
The New Zealand String Quartet is harking back to
the times of musical soirees in a new series of concerts
designed to introduce newcomers to chamber music. On
this tour they’re taking classical music out of the large
concert halls and performing in small intimate spaces.
The New Zealand String Quartet will perform its
Salon Series concert at Lodge Theatre in Geraldine next
month.
“We know many people don’t really know what
chamber music is,“ says String Quartet manager Rose
Campbell. “We experience chamber music all the time
– in films, on television ads and at weddings and events.
We’ve pulled together a selection of favourite pieces for
this special concert to provide an introduction to chamber
music.”
The programme features a range of short pieces as well
as a stunning full multi-movement from Schubert. From
JS Bach’s lyrical Air from Suite No 3, to Shostakovich’s
playful Polka, there is something to tantalise the musical
palate.
Chamber music fans will also enjoy the concert and
the chance to hear some of their favourite movements
as stand-alone pieces and explore the ideas behind the
composers’ works.
The New Zealand String Quartet Salon Series concert
is at the Lodge Theatre in Geraldine on Wednesday 10
September at 7.30pm. Tickets are available through Louk
