STAR STUDENT ELISE MILLER HONORED The Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) organization sponsors a STAR program to honor Georgia’s highest achieving high school seniors and the teachers who have been most instrumental in their academic development. Elise selected Mrs. Susan West as her Star Teacher. Since 1958, the STAR (Student Teacher Achievement Recognition) program has honored more than 23,000 high school seniors who have in turn chosen their STAR Teachers to share in this recognition. To obtain this nomination, high school students must have the highest score on any single test date of the three-part SAT taken through the November test date of their senior year and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class based on grade point average. This chapel focused on Jesus as the Word, the cornerstone, and the only means of salvation. Students compared and contrasted Christianity to other world religions in a newscast presentation. Students wrote their own script and pointed out that one of the main differences separating Christianity from the rest of the world’s religions is the empty tomb. Our God is NOT dead. We serve a risen savior. Students sang three songs which included ―Cornerstone‖, ―Like a Lion‖(―God’s Not Dead‖), and ―We Believe‖. Wyatt Karlovich and Rylie Boston shared their God-given musical talent by performing solos for ―We Believe‖, and Elliott Stone jazzed the audience with the box drum on ―Cornerstone‖ . The choir was directed by K. Ray Looney who gave of his time and efforts to make our chapel special. Anna Lane Hattaway wrote and delivered the message about the importance of the Bible. Bailey Cox directed the creative movement which was choreographed by Rylie Boston, Landry McCollum, Anna Lane Hattaway, and Bailey Cox. Dr. Sam Simon played the keyboard. High school students Ethan Lara and Kimsey Harris assisted Cody Miller with sound. Jake Till produced and edited our video, and Chris Blackwell organized and volunteered with the filming. Brian McCollum created the cross for our chapel. The eighth graders handled themselves with poise, confidence, and leadership. What a fantastic example of what sets ECA apart! Sheila Langford BAND NEWS Several High School Band students will be participating in the Georgia Music Educators District Seven Solo and Ensemble Festival at Ringgold Middle School on April 11. Excel will be represented by a Wind Quartet (Diana Davidson, Natalee Sims, Zara Rainey, and Savanna Keller), a Saxophone Trio (Matthew Raburn, Simon Morris, and Chris Bruce), and three soloists (Matthew Raburn, Zara Rainey, and Parker Helms, accompanied by Faith Thompson). MISSIONS Miriam Hibbard In the fall of my senior year, I traveled to the Dominican Republic for a mission trip. There I helped build a basketball court, volleyball court, and taught Bible stories in Spanish. My favorite part was ministry in the villages and the orphanages. The passion these people have for God, is very encouraging. They are extremely poor, but rich in love. I long to go back long term and build a relationship with these people! Seth Plimpton In the spring of my junior year, I got the opportunity to travel to Uganda for a two week mission trip. While there I helped build a library, played soccer with the local children, and fed orphans. My favorite part of the trip was handing out brand new textbooks to all the children of God’s Hope Primary School. The devotion the people of Uganda have for God is incredible. I plan to travel many times back to Uganda in the near future. My heart longs for these people and the determination they have for a better life.
