EXTBOOK TOUR
Here’s a classic textbook case of all-terrain riding. Start on the seabed of an
ancient tropical ocean. Upstream from the five arched stone bridge, take a few
moments to hunt for some fossils of giant cone-shaped cephalopods that once
lived here over 450 years ago. Head back into the quaint village of Pakenham and
fuel up with a double ice cream cone at Scoops, before starting out with some easy
riding on the flat farmlands along the Waba Road. Keep a little energy in reserve
because soon you will be climbing the long hill around Pakenham Mountain. Take a
breather at the top on the Campbell Side Road to admire the view overlooking
White Lake. Get ready for a rapid, rugged descent on the Bellamy Road to Cedar
Hill, and back to Pakenham, just in time to sample some goodies at the old fashioned
General Store, a leisurely meal at the Centennial Restaurant or Love that Barr, and
some final book learning with the Walking Tour Map of Pakenham.

This scenic bikeway offers a peaceful ride along Martin
St. N (County Rd. 17) to Blakeney. Pack a picnic and
head up the gentle rise out of town. Your delightfully
easy ride will take you to the quiet hamlet of Blakeney,
once a thriving 1850s community with a woolen mill and a
brewery. Turn left at the stop sign and meander down to the
river to enjoy a rest at the rapids in the picnic park.
Continue on across Highway 29 to the crossroads at
Bennie’s Corners. Turn left and follow the 8th line of
Ramsay, an original early settlement road rolling beside the
historic Mill of Kintail, stone farmsteads and idyllic
pastures. Make a final stop at the Auld Kirk, a testament to
the hardworking Scots pioneers of this region, before you
head back to town.

month-long advocacy event encourages citizens and visitors alike to
cycle on our wonderful roads.

Le mois juin est le mois de la bicyclette dans la municipalité de
Mississippi Mills. Ce mois d’activité ce veut être un plaidoyer afin
d’encourager les citoyens et les visiteurs pareillement à faire du vélo sur
nos magnifiques routes.
Ce circuit pittoresque offre une balade paisible le long de la
rue Martin N (County Rd 17) jusqu’à Blakeney. Emportez
un pique-nique et partez pour une randonnée campagnarde.
Ce parcours agréable vous mène jusqu’au hameau paisible de
Blakeney qui, dans les années 1850, fut une communauté
prospère grâce une filature de laine et une brasserie. À l'arrêt,
virez à la gauche et serpentez les berges de la rivière.
Profitez-en pour vous reposer près des chutes situées près de
l’aire de pique-nique. Poursuivez sur l'autoroute 29 vers le
carrefour Corners Bennie, tournez à gauche et suivez le
chemin 8th line du comté de Ramsay. Vous roulerez sur
une route historique, parsemée de fermes centenaires et
de pâturages idylliques aux abords de la zone de
conservation du moulin de Kintail. Avant de retourner
vers la ville, faites un dernier arrêt au Auld Kirk, site
rendant hommage aux pionniers écossais de la région.

Start at the parking lot and take an historical
side trip down the laneway to this 1830s grist
mill, now a museum dedicated to the memory
of Dr. R. Tait McKenzie. Be sure to view his
athletic sculptures in the loft studio, and visit
the Naismith display in the lower level, home of
the famous basketball rock. As boyhood chums,
McKenzie and Naismith, two of Miss Mills’ most
celebrated figures, would roam the fields along this
easy ride through rustic farmland and forests of
Canadian sugar maples. Stop at the Clayton
General Store for a cool drink and check out the
extensive used book selection on the front porch,
before returning along the meandering banks of
the Indian River.

This tour can be considered a tribute to the early pioneers who homesteaded
on 100 acre lots in Ramsay Township. Follow Country Street until it
becomes the Rae Road, and carefully cross over Highway 29, heading west.
Along the way, note the old farmsteads with their traditional, split cedar-rail
fences lining the concession roads. Much of the forest was logged in the 1820s.
Large rocks and boulders were ploughed up from the fields, moved with stone
boats and oxen, then often piled in a heap right in the centre of the field. Look
for these markers as you cycle down the Rae Road to the Old Perth Road. Take a
sharp right here and, as you travel back to Almonte, marvel at the courage and
pioneering spirit needed to settle this land.

Ce circuit peut être considéré comme un hommage aux pionniers qui se sont
établis sur des centaines d’acres dans le canton de Ramsay. Suivez la rue Country
jusqu'à ce qu'elle devienne la route Rae, et traversez prudemment l'autoroute 29
en direction ouest. Sur le chemin, notez les vieilles fermes avec leurs clôtures de

USEUM TOUR
This is the ultimate local history buff’s tour and it can be
modified depending on how much time you want to
spend at each stop. You will find two companion
museums at the Mill of Kintail Conservation Area, on the
8th Concession, only a short ride through picture perfect
rolling farmland. Both the R.Tait McKenzie Memorial
Museum and the Dr. James Naismith Basketball Museum are
housed in the same 1860’s heritage grist mill at this site. The
North Lanark Historical Museum, found at the corner of the
Appleton Side Road and the River Road, is a trove for
genealogists and those studying regional history. The
Mississippi Valley Textile Museum highlights early mill history
and the role of the textile industry in this area. You will find it
by riding through Almonte’s downtown heritage district,
which showcases some of the area’s finest shops and
restaurants. Watch for a sign at the bottom of Mill Street
directing you to Textile Museum at the lower falls.

Start: Mill of Kintail
Du terrain de stationnement, faites un détour
historique vers ce moulin des années 1830,
maintenant un musée dédié à la mémoire du Dr R.
Tait McKenzie. Assurez-vous de voir ses sculptures
sportives dans le studio loft, et visiter l’exposition
Naismith au niveau inférieur, vous y trouverez la
célèbre roche mère du basketball. Copains
d'enfance, McKenzie et Naismith, les deux
personnages les plus célèbres de « Miss Mills », se
promenèrent travers des terres agricoles
champêtres et des forêts canadiennes d'érables à
sucre, qui sont maintenant une randonnée
facile. Arrêtez-vous au magasin général de
Clayton pour une boisson rafraîchissante et
consultez la vaste sélection de livres
d'occasion sur le perron, avant de revenir
sur les rives de l’Indian River.

Le Défi « Silver Chain Challenge » est une compétition amicale entre les comtés de Lanark et de Renfrew
afin d’inspirer les communautés à devenir plus actives et de promouvoir une meilleure santé. Chaque juin,
« Mississippi Mills Bicycle Month », « the Physical Activity Network » et le Comté de Renfrew invitent les
résidents à rivaliser pour le plus kilomètre de vélo complété sur les routes de leur communauté et du comté.
C'est la tournée des fervents d'histoire locale et elle peut être
modifiée en fonction du temps que vous accorderez à chaque
arrêt. Sur la 8e concession, vous trouverez deux musées
similaires dans la zone de conservation de Kintail, ceci à une
courte distance sur cette route de campagne bordée de terres
agricoles. Le musée Dr R. Tait McKenzie et le musée Dr
James Naismith Basketball sont dans le même voisinage, près
du moulin à farine datant de 1860. Une visite du musée
historique de North Lanark, située au coin de la route
Appleton Side et la River Road, plaira aux généalogistes et à
ceux qui étudient l'histoire régionale. Le musée du textile
Mississipi Valley met en lumière l'histoire des moulins et
du rôle de l'industrie textile dans la région. Le centre-ville
d’Almonte est témoin de ce patrimoine et met en vedette
certains des meilleurs boutiques et restaurants de la
région. Au bas de la rue Mill, près des chutes, vous
trouverez des affiches vous indiquant la direction vers
le Musée du Textile.

OUNCILLORS’ TOUR
The only motion needed to carry you along on this
tour is self-propelled, as you power along the back
roads to the Mississippi Mills Town Hall. No seconder
required. This relaxing trip heads out of town on
Country Street and crosses County Road 29. Turn right
at the stop sign on the 8th line of Ramsay and ramble on
over to the intersection of the Old Perth Road. It was one
of the first trails to be laid out as a road in Ramsay
Township and gave the original settlers access from Lanark
to the waterfalls on the Mississippi. Turn right and coast
down the long hill, past the municipal building. Just keep
an eye out for the fox pups that may be spotted at the
bottom of the hill near the highway.

start: downtown Almonte
Classique du vélo mollo, vous n’avez qu’à vous propulser le
long de ce parcours débutant à la mairie de Mississippi
Mills et déambulant le long des routes de campagne. C’est
un voyage pure détente! Prenez la direction sortie de la ville
sur la rue County et traversez la route County 29. À l'arrêt,
virez à la droite sur le chemin 8th line du comté de Ramsay
et traversez l'intersection de la vieille route Perth. Ce fut
l’un des premiers sentiers à devenir une route dans le
canton de Ramsay et les colons s’en servaient pour accéder
aux chutes d'eau sur le Mississippi à partir de Lanark.
Tournez à droite et dévalez la colline passant le devant
des bâtiments municipaux. Gardez un œil ouvert vous
pourriez rencontrer des renardeaux au bas de la colline
près de l'autoroute.
