The function of the depot consists chiefly of receiving, issuing, shipping and care of animals of the
army; and the training of soldiers in the lines of work connected therewith, such as wagon and pack
transportation, horseshoeing, duties of stable sergeants, farriers and saddles.
The barracks, mess halls, office buildings, officers quarters, warehouses, horseshoers’ school, etc.,
compose one group, the stables and corrals of the wagon company, the riding horses, the Veterinary
Corps, and the pack train compose another group; while the veterinary hospital with their corrals and the
large corrals comprise the third and largest group.
