continue to enter the field of
senior care, we’re seeing much
growth and expansion.
This directory is a place to
measure how much has changed

care. There are more places for seniors to live, an
exponential growth in home care agencies, and
insurance and financial services vying for business as
the market niche broadens to now include anyone over
age 50.
Seniors are anyone over age 50? That’s right. Not
only are seniors and baby boomers now lumped
together, but businesses are hoping for new
opportunities to cater to both groups...baby boomers
caring for their aging parents. Two entirely different
markets with similar needs and futures.
The services described in this directory are a place to
start. This directory empowers each of its readers to
make choices based on individual situations. If you’re
reading this and not familiar with the service, call us.
We can help in finding what you’re looking for, and not
try to sell you something else. The senior care market
is a competitve business. Just like any other business.
We at Born To Age personally have met, talked to and
mostly know all of the advertisers in this directory. We
can vouch for them. In the past seven years, we have
worked with almost everyone listed here. These are
people we know and trust to do the best for the people
they care for, and the families they serve.
This information can be important whether or not you
need it now. After you read it, file it away for future
reference. Or, better yet, sit down with the people who
love and care about you, and make out a plan just in
case you ever become frail, ill or dependent. The time
to plan is when you don’t need the services right away.
A health care crisis or emergency isn’t the time to start
thinking of the “what if’s” and “wherefores.”
Born To Age has changed, as well. We are not
exclusively directories anymore. We now have a
PERSONAL REFERRAL NETWORK, which means

Getting information out in as many ways as possible is
important to us. We believe that people have a right
to know, make choices and get accurate, pertinent
information in a timely manner.

objective about anything...that’s often why we rely on
experts and advisors. So, that’s why this directory and
all the services therein, exist.
We get phone calls daily, people ask us about what
possibilities are out there, what should they be
considering...but, mostly, we’re asked, “What would
you do?
Back a few years ago, I didn’t to say this, but now, with
all the businesses and people out to earn money in
this field of elder care: Buyer beware.
Recently, a woman phoned because she, at age
75, wanted to move out of her condo and find the
“right” place to live. She still drove, shopped and
did everything on her own. No assistance seemed
necessary in this moment. Her conversation was
normal, she was coherent and friendly...and, yet, I
sensed that there was more to the story than what she
was telling me over the phone.
Senior care is personal care. And, it does get very
personal, indeed.
So, while we meandered over possibilities, my gut told
me that she needed a personal visit, a check in by
an outsider to garner more about the circumstances
behind this seemingly innocent phone call. But, like
in most cases, people are private and often defiant in
holding unto their personal reality as long as possible.

An Advanced Health Care Directive is a
legal document where you state your wishes
regarding your health care if you’re not able
to make the decisions yourself. This is also
called a “living will,” or a “durable attorney for
health care.” Everyone, regardless of age,
should have one of these filled out.

Incapacity:
Plan for it Now
Incapacity means the inability to
make reasonable decisions regarding
personal and financial affairs. It can
happen to anyone, due to an accident,
injury or mentally debilitating illness.
If you oppose the conservatorship,
you have a right to an attorney. You
can also attend the hearing, where the
judge determines whether or not the
conservatorship is required.
Here’s how it works:
For many, it often happens with
Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s or other
dementia.
A friend, relative, public official or private
professional petitions the court to an
appointment as conservator. Once
the petition is filed, a court investigator
interviews the proposed conservatoree
and reports to the court whether the
appointment of conservator is justified.
If you haven’t made plans for it, realize
that family and friends will have a very
difficult time paying bills, handling health
care, and other personal matters.
Plan for incapacity while you are of
sound mind. Your options are: Durable
Power of Attorney for Finances,
Advance Health Care Directive,
Physician Order for Life Sustaining
Treatment (POLST), Revocable Living
Trust.
If you don’t make these plans earlier in
life, a Petition for Conservatorship may
need to be approved by a judge in order
to handle your financial and personal
care.

HOUSING REPAIR LOANS
The City of Alameda sponsors several
rehabilitation programs providing loans,
grants, and/or technical assistance to
homeowners. Assistance is available to
develop or conserve housing stock for
low and moderate-income residents (less
than $53,000 per two-person household),
correct code deficiencies, or perform minor
emergency home repairs.
The city has a new grant program exclusively
for accessibility modifications that can assist
by adding ramps and lifts, as well as making
limited interior accessibility adaption (e.g.,
installation of grab bars, etc.).
The substantial rehab program creates new
affordable rental units in existing vacant or
underutilized structures. Income limits do not
apply to the property owner/developer in this

My 53-year-old aunt died last year from
cancer. She had cancer for 18 months,
but not once did it ever occur to her, or
her husband, that this was a terminal
disease. The doctor’s kept assuring them
that cancer is “chronic, and there’s no
reason why, with current treatments, she
won’t live a normal lifespan.”
never practiced her religion and no one
believed it would matter to her. But, what
we believed…we didn’t know for sure.
So, for 18 months, they both
concentrated on the hope of keeping her
alive, rather than the reality that she was
actually in the last year of her life.
If I had a lesson to pass on to all of you,
I’d ask that you make a plan. It may not
matter to you at all in the final throes of
the dying process, but I can assure you
that it will make all the difference in the
world to your family.
She had no Advance Directive, never
completed a Physician’s Order for
Life Sustaining Treatment (POLST),
didn’t have a will, and had not had a
conversation with anyone at anytime
about what she’d actually want for end of
life care.
I wish she was an exception, but I can
look at both my parents and many other
loved ones and say the same thing…
in my family, talking about death or
end of life is so taboo that bringing up
the subject at all is fraught with the
consequences of verbal condemnation
and an outright shunning for weeks, if not
months. When my aunt was dying, my
uncle forbade family members to mention
death in front of her. And, regretfully now,
we followed his wishes because if we
didn’t….well, he wouldn’t allow us in his
house, or to talk to her on the phone.
So, in the last hours of consciousness,
my aunt had all sorts of business to take
care of…all, while in a morphine induced
state of euphoria which was interrupted
by stabbing bouts of uncontrollable pain.
The most important part of the business
was giving Power of Attorney for
Finances over to her husband because
they had held separate bank accounts
throughout their 25 year marriage.
The first notary, who was called to
witness the signing, refused, due to
my aunt’s diminished capacity. On the
second notary, the nurses withheld the
medications for an extra 15 minutes so
that she’d be awake enough to sign the
paperwork.
But, after hospital discharge and sent
home on hospice to die….well, we never
had a coherent moment, again.
So, no matter how many times I asked
her for preferences, or what we should do
after she dies…she’d look at me blankly,
then closed her eyes to return to sleep.
And, my aunt refused to tell her mother,
or her sisters, that she had cancer at all.
So, in the telling, we had to face the pain
of them knowing everything at once.
And, it’s not just about dying.
What happened to her body, her care,
her money, her possessions…well, that
was no longer her concern. My aunt was
dying and the rest of it was up to us…
well, actually me, because my uncle
had also crossed the threshold into total
incompetency.
I had no idea what she wanted. A
chaplain? Candles? Music? Family
members? Silence? Windows open/
closed?
Religion? Chanting? Comfort? No clue.
So, we improvised. Trying everything for
awhile, and then moving unto something
else.
After death…do we cremate? Bury?
Where? How? Religous? I simply had no
idea.
Without an Advance Directive, everyone
looked towards her husband to lead
the way…except in this case, he was
incompetent, unaware of anything but his
own pain. At one point, he asked that we
investigate passage to Germany in the
hope that a liver transplant would give her
a few more weeks of life.
Planning ahead no longer mattered
to my aunt, but I am willing to bet that
she would’ve been mortified to see the
chaos that ensued around every decision
that was to be made. I’m sure, in her
heart, she would’ve spared us all this
pain if she’d known what a difference it
would’ve made to have made a plan with
clear directions on personal preferences
in all aspects of medical care, treatments,
dying, and after death…as well as
her estate, finances and dispersal of
personal possessions.
It’s been months since she’s died, and
there are family members who are no
longer speaking to each other. She
was cremated, and her ashes placed
in a mortuary niche. Only after the
cremation occurred did we receive a
phone call from her mother begging that
she be buried in New York. Cremation,
it turns out, is against the Russian
Orthodox faith…except my aunt had

chaos.
So, do it now.
I’m 55 years old. I have a trust, a will, and
an Advance Directive. My children know
my wishes of how I’d like to live as I age,
and we talk frequently about personal
preferences in all aspects of our being.
And, if I’m dying…well, I want to know
because I want to make sure that my life
is going to be the best that it can be up
until the end. I don’t want to end up stuck
on a chemo drip IV in the last week of my
life in the hope that this one will be the
miracle that will turn everything around.

Without a POLST, we didn’t know
whether she even wanted Hospice, or
comfort measures…or had any personal
preferences about medical care.
Without a will, we had no idea where her
money was, how it was to be allocated,
or whether there were beneficiaries, other
than her husband, that she might’ve
preferred.
Remember, that 50% of us are targeted
for some sort of dementia. So, dementia
could take away our abilities to plan for
ourselves, leaving that task to others.

My mother is a difficult
person. This is how
she’s always been...but,
now that she’s older,
it seems to be more
detrimental to her life
than ever before.
She lives in Michigan,
all three of her children
live in California. As
she’s grown older, her
social life has altered
signficantly (no one
drives anymore),
she’s become more
isolated, depressed and
increasingly forgetful.
Strongly independent, mistrustful of others,
fearful of dying or illness, gets most of her
information from TV shows, or friends,
doesn’t follow doctor’s advice, questions
everything, and doesn’t want to spend
anymore money...on anything. Especially
not on making her own life any better.
So, when she fell down in the middle of the
night (while walking to the bathroom) and
required 15 stitches to her forehead, she
refused to get a Lifeline or any type of alert
system. Not even a cell phone. Mother
scoffed at our concern. Months later, she
fell again, in a parking garage. This time, a
security guard helped her get up. But, she
time for mother to move to California to be
with her children.
So, I flew out to Michigan for a visit and to
see, with my own eyes, what was going on.

Severely allergic, she banged on her
neighbor’s door for help, and was taken to
the emergency room at the local hospital.
After initial treatment, albeit still confused,
she phoned her cousin to take her home...
against medical advice. No one phoned
any of her children...so we didn’t know. Just
coincidentally, I phoned on my weekly check
in and was stunned to hear her garbled,
thick voice not making any sense on the
other end of the line.
A flurry of calls to other family members, and
she went back to the hospital to stablize.
However, her cousin stressed that it was

doubt that it was time for my mother to make
other living arrangements. She had lost a
significant amount of weight, spent most
of her days sitting in the library so that she
could be ‘”around people,” and her memory
had significantly diminished from prior visits.
I worried about personal safety, quality of life
and the possibility of a crisis.
I made a myraid of suggestions: home care,
lifeline, a friendly visitor, a daily check in
call, a companion, moving to a retirement
home....the gamut.
My mother has diminished capacity. She’s
had several TIA’s, small strokes, and it’s
caused her to be very suspicious, and even
paranoid, about the motives of her family
members. She is also unable to transfer
information into short term memory. This
causes conversations to be limited to
repetition and single topics with one clear
message.
But, even though she’s not operating with
the brain she once had, she still has full
reign over her rights and responsibilities.
No matter what we think might be better,
she wants no change to her current
circumstances.
So, I returned to California and we continued
with twice weekly phone contact.
Except, things continue to get worse.
Prescribed new blood pressure medication,
and an anti-depressant, she refuses to
take either. We don’t know the name of
her doctor, (and she won’t tell us, anyway),
but we do know she frequently misses
appointments and has slipped out in
conversation that her doctor is “mad” at her
unwillingness to follow advice.
We know she’s not driving anymore, except
to go to the bank, library and grocery store.
And, that someone came by the house to
trim the shrubbery, and “I gave him a few
things because he wouldn’t accept any
money,” she told us.
She’s had a big fight with her best friend and
they’re no longer on speaking terms. And,
her neighbor’s are preoccupied with their
own fraility and aging and she no longer is
able to rely on them for help.
Last month, when the temperature hit 108

Alameda
Road to Recovery is a program offered by
the American Cancer Society to provide free
transportation to individuals with cancerrelated medical appointments. Volunteer
drivers bring ambulatory individuals with
cancer who are unable to drive themselves,
to and from medical treatment facilities,
providing a friendly, supportive, and reliable
presence.

Premium Taxi Service provides a 50%
discount for taxi rides with the City of
Alameda’s transportation provider. The
service is not limited to medical trips. Eligible
riders must purchase the required discount
coupons in advance. However, to make the
program fair to all users, you may purchase
a maximum number of 5 coupons per quarter
(every 3 months).
Eligibility Requirements:
Must be East Bay Paratransit-certified, 75
years of age or older, or 70 years of age or
older without a driver’s license.
Cost:
Each travel coupon has a $5 value and costs
$2.50. If the cost of a trip cannot be covered
exactly with one or more $5 coupons, you
may either give the driver an additional
coupon or cash to pay the additional cost.
However, if you use a coupon, drivers cannot
provide you with change. You must present
travel coupons with a completed Travel
Information Form to the taxi driver upon
arrival at your requested destination.

isolated seniors secure food, housing and
healthcare.
Veteran’s Benefits to
Pay for Long Term Care
Most veterans and surviving spouses
who are in need of assisted living or
inhome care, can qualify for the “Aid
and Attendance” Benefit offered by the
Veteran’s Administration. The benefit
can pay up to $2,019 per month to
a married veteran, and a single or
widowed veteran can receive up to
$1,703 per month. Unmarried surviving
spouses can received up to $1,094 a
month. Married to each other, $2,631.
All of these benefits are tax free.
Under this program, money is awarded
based on need and there are certain
income and asset requirements. The
veteran or spouse applying must
show that while assistance may not
be needed with everything, there is
help needed with bathing, dressing/
undressing, medications, transferring or
other care on a daily basis. This is the
type of care provided in assisted living,
or by an in-home care companion.
There are several classes of assets that
are exempt, such as a primary home
and vehicle.
Also, the veteran must have served one
day during a period of war and had at
least 90 days of active duty.
Eligibility must be proven by filing the
proper Veteran’s Application for Pension
or Compensation (Form 21-534 for
surviving spouse) (Form 21-526
veteran). This application will require
a copy of the the DD-214 (discharge
papers), a medical evaluation from the
physician, current medical issues, net
worth information, net income and outof-pocket medical expenses.
Approval takes about six months, but
the VA is supposed to give priority to
any application for benefits by a veteran
over age 70. If the benefit is approved,
the money awarded is retroactive to
date of application.

These agencies can provide both skilled
and non-skilled medical care. The
services might be covered by long term
care, or other insurances, and private
pay. The agency is the employer.
Caregivers are hired, screened and paid
for by the agency. If the caregiver is ill
or unable to work, a substitute caregiver

taxes, worker’s compensation and

day in the library because her air conditioner
“broke.” I phoned the repairman and made
an appointment for him to come the next
day. She phoned him and cancelled...
said she didn’t want anyone coming into
her home. Another red flag. I’m not sure
whether the air conditioner is really not
operational, or that she’s forgotten how to
turn it on.
But, mother is luckier than many. There
are three children, all willing to take her
in, living in the most beautiful place in the
United States. Each home has an extra
room, grandchildren, family pets, friendships
and possiblilities. There are senior centers,
universities, casinos, libraries, enrichment
opportunities...all out here, as well. And, her
brothers are also nearby.
So, my sister flew out yesterday, buying
mother a return ticket and determined to
take her back on the plane.
Mother says to me, almost daily, “I can’t
believe that I’m this old...”
Mother is balking, complaining and
negotiating all types of terms. She’s been
phoning all family members...begging for
understanding that she can’t possibly leave
the house, her daily trips to the library or the
possibility that everything that gives her life
meaning will be taken away.
And, that’s what makes it difficult.
I receive phone calls every day from children
who are worried about aging parents who
live across the country and refuse to move,
or get assistance.
I tell them, they can call in Adult Protective
Services for a “social welfare check.” But,
that’s about it. If care is refused, it is still a
right to be able to live however one wishes,
and this is retained unless the right is
taken away by getting a court appointed
conservatorship.
Usually, there’s a wait for a crisis. That’s
how it works. Without consent, even Adult
Protective Services can do very little.
My sister says her last resort is to refuse
to leave Michigan unless mother is on the
plane with her.
So, I’m waiting now...to see what happens
next.
