Changing Jobs
The Local Author Series continues to produce popular programs. Charley Hoce appeared at various branches in
August -- to the delight of everyone who attended. What a
funny, talented author he is! He
performed his poetry in an interactive format (meaning that
he acted out each poem as he
recited it.) Then he read from
his children’s poetry book, Beyond Old MacDonald. After
the program he signed copies of
his book.

The Preble County District
Library is looking for a few
good Friends. We've made
some changes these last few
years. We have increased
our programming and the
number of popular titles in
DVDs and books. We are
doing our best to get the
materials you have specifically requested. The public is
attending our new teen programming and local author
series and our children's
programs are at capacity.
We are looking for grant
money to purchase more
laptops for adult in-library
use. All of these changes
and goals made us realize
that we need some Friends
of the Library to help us
along the way.
The West Alexandria Branch,
Camden Branch and the
West Elkton Branch all have
Friends. These are great
people who recognize how
important their local library
branch is to their community. They help us out by
sponsoring book sales, bake
sales and other events to
defray the cost of programming, copiers, fax machines
Many of the earliest immigrants to Preble County
came for religious and moral
reasons.
In 1768, more than seventy
families from Orange Co., NC
settled in Georgia in a special reserve set aside for
them. Located in present day McDuffie County, the
town and preserve was
called Wrightsborough. Many
of these families were Quakers and very opposed to
fighting and slavery.
In June 1805, the Nathan
and other special items that
you, our patrons, want in
your branches or for our
county genealogical library.
If you or your organization
are interested in becoming a
member of the Friends of
the Library for your local
branch, please contact your

Stubbs Family was the first
Quakers to settle along Elk
Creek in Gratis Township. In
the months that followed the
entire community of
Wrightsborough Quakers
moved to the area and
formed the West Elkton
Friends Monthly Meeting.
Friends of the West Elkton Library
We’re BACK! The Friends of the
West Elkton Library met on July 16
for the first time in many years.
The Friends first formed in 1984 to
resurrect the library after it closed
due to the fire at the elementary
school. They remained active for
several years.
Recently, the need for a Friends
group was again explored and a
group of library supporters met and
quickly organized in July.
The first order of business was to
nominate and elect officers to serve
the organization. Salli Corrington
was elected President, Betty
Combs, Treasurer, and Debbie Encinias, Secretary. The purpose of
the Friends is to provide help and
funds for the betterment of the
West Elkton Library. Mickie Gayhart
is the Librarian.
The group of approximately 12
members organized and held their
first fund raiser with a Book and
Bake Sale on August 11. It was a
tremendous success at raising
money for the library. The Friends
sincerely appreciate those who
donated so generously of their
books, baked goods, and money to
make the sale a huge success. The
money will be used to provide
items our librarian needs or would
like to use to make the library a fun
place for our young patrons to visit.
German Baptist Brethren beginning
in 1803 and was known as the Virginia Colony. The family of Elder
Jacob Miller made up the original
settlement. Hueston, Ridenour and
Kingery were other early families,
mostly from Franklin Co., VA. The
Four Mile Brethren Church was organized in 1809 by Elders Jacob
Miller and John Hart.
In Israel Township, the Little
Four Mile Creek flows along The Presbyterians, who were Scotsthe Indiana/Ohio state line
Irish, built a log church in 1808 and
for about ten miles.
called it Hopewell after an area in
South Carolina that had been home
The area was settled by the
to many of them. Alexander Porter
was their first permanent minister.
In 1834, fifty families from Hopewell
The Friends also agreed to donate
school supplies to the young patrons of the West Elkton Library to
give them a good start on school.
Money was donated by the Friends
to purchase enough school supplies
to fill 13 bags. They were given out
to young students when they came
to the library. Many of the students
provided a personal thank you to
the Friends when they picked up
their bags. Mickie will use additional
supplies at the library.
Future projects in the planning and
discussion stage are as follows: a
Fall Festival for Saturday, October
27, and a Christmas Cookie Exchange that might include a visit
from Santa at the library.
We are excited to welcome both
new members and returning
Friends from the original group.
Visit the library and see what is
new and exciting! Better yet, ask
about becoming a member of the
Friends of the West Elkton Library!
Your support will make a difference.
For more information, please call
the library at 787-4873 during open
hours -- Mon. & Wed. 2:30-6:30 PM
and Sat. 10 AM- 2 PM

became known as the Fairhaven
Congregation. They had strong opinions about abolition (of slavery) and
temperance (in the use of alcohol).
These immigrants felt so strongly
about their beliefs and convictions
that they were willing to leave their
homes to travel to parts unknown.
They were courageous enough to
start down the mountain valley or
river, traveling by foot, cart, wagon,
ferry, or flatboat to reach what was
once the western frontier – Ohio. It
was here that they built new communities, places we, in Preble
County, now call home. ~Martha

Author visit in July
Mystery authors Don Bruns and D.B. Borton
visited the West Alexandria Library. Everyone
who attended had a lovely evening! As Branch
Librarian, Suzanne Pontius, reports:
Don brought a trailer (that will be shown in
movie houses) for his next book, a new series
called STUFF TO DIE FOR. Two 24 year old
guys in Florida buy a box truck and go into the
moving business, but on their first job they find
a severed finger. He's also working on another
Mick Sever book about the Bahamas. He was
going to bring a guitar but forgot it, so my husband brought his and Don played the song he
recorded for A MERRY BAND OF MURDERERS
(short stories and a CD of songs).
DB Borton has one chapter written in the ninth
Cat Caliban series--I hope she keeps writing--I
love that series!
West Alexandria Library is collecting the following
for Twin Valley Schools:
• box tops
• bottle cap tops
• soda can tabs
• Campbell’s food labels
These items will be redeemed to benefit the school
in a variety of ways. For information about these

Contemporary Literary Horror
These books are written with a greater emphasis on character & story development.
The Historian / Elizabeth Kostova: A young
woman finds old papers which begin to reveal an
ancient and evil plot concerning Vlad the Impaler and
the legend of Dracula, which may still be continuing.
The Thirteenth Tale / Diane Setterfield: This
dark tale pays haunting tribute to gothic storytelling
in the vein of Bronte’s Jane Eyre and Du Maurier’s
Rebecca.
City of Masks / Daniel Hecht: In "City of Masks," the first Cree
Black novel, parapsychologist Cree and her partner take a case in
New Orleans's Garden District that leaves them fearing for their own
lives. The 150-year-old Beauforte House has long stood empty, until
Lila Beauforte resumes residence and starts to see some of the
house's secrets literally come to life. Tormented by an insidious and
violent presence, Lila finds herself trapped in a life increasingly filled
with childhood terrors. It takes Cree's unconventional take on psychology and her powerful natural empathy with Lila to navigate the
dangerous worlds of spirit and memory, as they clash in a terrifying tale of mistaken
identity and murder.

My sister, Carol, my niece, Madeleine, and my nephew, Robert
visited from Texas this summer.
My sister, who is going to school
to become a special needs teacher,
loves taking Madeleine and
Robert to museums,
aquariums, zoos, historical
sites, etc., so that is how we spent a good bit of our
time together. It was fun and, of course, educational.
Some of the places visited were: The Levi Coffin House
in Indiana, the Newport Aquarium in Kentucky, Boonshoft Museum of Discovery in Dayton, the National
Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati,
and the Garst Museum in Greenville.
Taking children on family outings to local places of
interest is not only a wonderful way to spend hot summer days, but it is also a perfect way to expose them
to the wide and diverse world in which we live. It
sparks their interest and expands their minds in ways
that will not happen in a classroom, from a book, or
through television.
Following is a list of materials that can help you plan
your next Ohio outing!
Fun With the Family in Ohio / Khristi S. Zimmeth
Kids Love Ohio / George Zavatsky
Free Ohio Fun / Frank R. Satullo
Natural Wonders of Ohio / Gordon Groene
Backroads of Ohio / Miriam Carey
Country Roads of Ohio / Janet Groene
Weird Ohio / James A. Willis
Oddball Ohio / Jerome Pohlen
Where to Weekend Around Ohio / Mary Beth Bohman
52 Ohio Weekends / Mary Quinley
What do you want to be when you
grow up? Adults love to ask children
this burning question. When I asked
my niece and nephew the question,
Madeleine rattled off a list a mile
long -- writer, football player, vet,
etymologist, zoo-keeper, archeologist, environmentalist, paleontologist, animal rescuer, artist, comeMadeleine and Robert visit Ohio! dian, ice cream maker, and, last, but
not least, scientist. Robert informed
me that he wants to be an actor or, if that doesn’t pan out, he wants to be
bitten by a radio-active spider so he can save the day like Spiderman.
That’s one great thing about being a kid. You have little concept of limits -- the
world is your oyster and you can be whatever you can dream. Unfortunately,
we lose that as we age. Reality bites (usually in school) when you accept that
your dreams are tempered by many things: skill, brain power, ability, and
sometimes money. It’s a shame, really, that we can’t be just by the wanting.
One day, practicality will narrow Madeleine’s career list. And Robert will learn
that radio-active spider-bites do not create heroes. But, until then, it’s okay that
they see only the possibilities -- because possibilities are what dreams are
made of. Cheryl Richter, 2007

Readers are A Buzz!
Slightly disconcerting at first, this book quickly scrambles into an exciting, fast-paced
tale that will have you reading long into the night! Lisa Lutz enthralls us with the wacky
antics of the private detecting Spellman family -- especially Isabel ‘Izzy’ Spellman, who
delivers her story with bruising style and wit. If you love the Stephanie Plum series,
give Izzy Spellman a try. Unlike Stephanie’s family, Izzy’s is more outrageous than
quirky, but you’ll find them just as entertaining. The Spellman Files can certainly
qualify as the “don’t miss” mystery read of the season!
The Spellman Files / Lisa Lutz: Meet Isabel "Izzy" Spellman, private investigator. This twenty-eight -year-old may have a checkered
past littered with romantic mistakes, excessive drinking, and creative
vandalism; she may be addicted to Get Smart reruns and prefer entering homes through windows rather than doors -- but the upshot is
she's good at her job as a licensed private investigator with her family's firm, Spellman Investigations. Invading people's privacy comes
naturally to Izzy. In fact, it comes naturally to all the Spellmans. If only
they could leave their work at the office. To be a Spellman is to snoop
on a Spellman; tail a Spellman; dig up dirt on, blackmail, and wiretap a
Spellman. Part Nancy Drew, part Dirty Harry, Izzy walks an indistinguishable line between Spellman family member and Spellman employee. Duties include: completing
assignments from the bosses, aka Mom and Dad (preferably without scrutiny); appeasing her chronically perfect lawyer brother (often under duress); setting an example for
her fourteen-year-old sister, Rae (who's become addicted to "recreational surveillance"); and tracking down her uncle (who randomly disappears on benders dubbed
"Lost Weekends"). But when Izzy's parents hire Rae to follow her (for the purpose of
ascertaining the identity of Izzy's new boyfriend), Izzy snaps and decides that the only
way she will ever be normal is if she gets out of the family business. But there's a
hitch: she must take one last job before they'll let her go -- a fifteen-year-old,
ice-cold missing person case. She accepts, only to experience a disappearance far
closer to home, which becomes the most important case of her life. FYI: Paramount
Pictures has optioned the novel with Laura Ziskin producing.

Bewitching
Garden Spells / Sarah Addison Allen: The Waverleys have
always been a curious family,
endowed with peculiar gifts that
make them outsiders even in their
hometown of Bascom, North
Carolina. Even their garden has a
reputation, famous for its feisty
apple tree that bears prophetic
fruit, and its edible flowers, imbued with special
powers. Generations of Waverleys tended this
garden. Their history was in the soil. But so were
their futures.
A successful caterer, Claire Waverley prepares
dishes made with her mystical plants—from the
nasturtiums that aid in keeping secrets and the
pansies that make children thoughtful, to the
snapdragons intended to discourage the attentions of her amorous neighbor. Meanwhile, her
elderly cousin, Evanelle, is known for distributing
unexpected gifts whose uses become uncannily
clear. They are the last of the Waverleys—except
for Claire’s rebellious sister, Sydney, who fled Bascom the moment she could, abandoning Claire, as
their own mother had years before. When Sydney
suddenly returns home with a young daughter of
her own, Claire’s quiet life is turned upside
down—along with the protective boundary she
has so carefully constructed around her heart.
Together again in the house they grew up in, Sydney takes stock of all she left behind, as Claire
struggles to heal the wounds of the past. And
soon the sisters realize they must deal with their
common legacy—if they are ever to feel at home
in Bascom—or with each other. Enchanting and
heartfelt, this captivating novel is sure to cast a
spell with a style all its own.
New from Debbie Macomber…

This Christmas, Mercy is assigned to bring peace
of mind to an elderly man . . . who discovers an
unexpected answer to his prayer. Goodness is
sent to oversee the love life of a woman afraid to
risk commitment a second time. And Shirley has
the task of granting a little boy's fondest Christmas wish.
Fantasy Romance: Katie Chandler Series by Shanna Swendson
Enchanted, Inc: DON’T MESS WITH HEXES! Katie Chandler had always heard that New York is a weird and wonderful place, but this
small-town Texas gal had no idea how weird until she moved there.
Everywhere she goes, she sees something worth gawking at and Katie
is afraid she’s a little too normal to make a splash in the big city. Working for an ogre of a boss doesn’t help. Then, seemingly out of the blue,
Katie gets a job offer from Magic, Spells, and Illusions, Inc., a company
that sells tricks of the trade to the magic community. For MSI, Katie’s ordinariness is an
asset. Lacking any bit of magic, she can easily spot a fake spell, catch hidden clauses in
competitor’s contracts, and detect magically disguised intruders. Suddenly, average
Katie is very special indeed. She quickly learns that office politics are even more complicated when your new boss is a real ogre, and you have a crush on the sexy, shy, ultra
powerful head of the R&D department, who is so busy fighting an evil competitor
threatening to sell black magic on the street that he seems barely to notice Katie. Now
it’s up to Katie to pull off the impossible: save the world and–hopefully–live happily
ever after.
Once Upon Stilettos: Click your heels three times and say, “There’s
no place like Bloomies!” Katie Chandler’s life is pure magic–literally. As
an executive assistant at Magic, Spells, and Illusions, Inc., she’s seen
more than her share of fantastical occurrences. A mere Manhattan
mortal, Katie is no wizard, but she’s a wiz at exposing “hokum” pocus,
cloaked lies, and deceptive enchantments. And she’s fallen under the
all-too-human spell of attraction to Owen, a hunky wizard and coworker. Owen, however, is preoccupied. Someone has broken into his office and disrupted top-secret files, and it reeks of an inside job. CEO Merlin (yes, The Merlin) and
taps Katie and her special ability to uncover the magical mole. Keeping her feelings in
check while sleuthing alongside Owen, Katie is shocked to discover that her immunity
to magic is waning, putting her in grave danger. Soon she’s surrendering to the charms
and enchantments of everyone and everything around her, including a killer pair of red
stilettos. Katie must now conjure up her natural instincts to get to the bottom of the
break-in, regain her power, and win the wizard of her dreams.
Damsel Under Stress: To-do: Stop the bad guys. Rescue the wizard.
Find the perfect outfit for New Year’s Eve. At last, Owen Palmer, the
dreamboat wizard at Magic, Spells, and Illusions, Inc., has conjured up
the courage to get Katie Chandler under the mistletoe at the office holiday party. But just when it looks like Katie has found her prince, in
pops her inept fairy godmother, Ethelinda, to throw a wand into the
works. Ethelinda’s timing couldn’t be worse. A plot hatched by MSI’s
rogue ex-employees, Idris and his evil fairy gal pal Ari, threatens to
expose the company’s secrets–and the very existence of magic itself. Even worse, it
could also mean the end of Katie’s happily-ever-after. Now Katie and Owen must work
side by side (but alas, not cheek to cheek) to thwart the villains’ plans. Braving blackmagic-wielding sorceresses, subway-dwelling dragons, lovelorn frog princes, and even
the dreaded trip to meet Owen’s parents at Christmas, Katie and her beau are in a battle to beat Idris at his own sinister game. All mischief and matters of the heart will
come to a head at a big New Year’s Eve gala, when the crystal ball will drop, champagne will pour, and Katie will find herself truly spellbound.

The Summer Reading Program helps students keep up those
vital reading skills learned during the school year. The program
also provides free activities for families during the summer.

This year, 139 teens signed up for Teen Summer Reading Program -- which was more than double the number from last year -- Woo-hoo!! Together, they read more than 4,100 hours -- let’s hope their eyes aren’t too
worn out for going back to school!
Of course, summer reading wasn’t just about books. To start, each of the participating branches held a kickoff party where teens could stuff their faces with pizza and pick up a FREE graphic novel, courtesy of Project
READ and Verizon, just for signing up for Summer Reading. Throughout the summer, there were also several
events held especially for teens, including an after-hours gaming night at the Eaton Branch, and a lock-in at
the West Alexandria Branch. The programs were well attended and the teens, as well as the librarians, really enjoyed themselves.
As Teen Librarian, I am looking forward to an even greater Teen Summer Reading success next year!
