OUR MOST
ADAPTIVE PACK
ADVENTURERS DON’T
READ TIMETABLES.
We don’t walk the
well-trodden path.
We’re explorers.
We search for the
unexpected, because
that’s where life
happens.
In the jungle, or glacial river,
or the trek at 3000 metres
above sea level we are free.
We adventurers thrive
because this is our life.
Out here we are home.
We love the challenges
that come our way, and we
choose gear that enables us
to adapt and thrive in any
terrain or climate.
This winter at Kathmandu,
we’ll inspire you with the
release of 360 degree XT gear,
designed for head-to-toe
protection so no weather can
hold you back. We also bring
you the Terrane Adapt Pack,
our most adaptable pack. It
features world-first patentpending technology and a
clever design, the result of a
million travelling experiences.
Winter 16 at Kathmandu.

Here at Kathmandu, we are
all travellers. We all go on epic
adventures and we’re passionate
about gear that works well
in a wide range of situations.
Adaptability is a key element of
our design philosophy, and it’s the
overall theme of our W16 range.
In one way or another, the
outdoor gear in our W16 range
has the ability to do more than
one thing alone, to adjust when
required, to excel in multiple
environments and situations and
to ultimately make your travel
adventures better.
When we travel, we adapt to new
cultures, languages, environments.
We adapt to changing weathers,
to wrong turns, to delayed flights,
dodgy food and whatever other
curve balls are thrown our way.
It’s the unexpected that makes
travel an adventure, and it’s
our ability to adapt that has us
grinning from ear-to-ear arriving
at our destination saying ‘whoa!
What a ride!’
Watch online: Behind our W16 range
“I love it when products are so
well designed they always seem
to be a step ahead of you,” says
Kathmandu's Group Design
Manager, Darren Barry.
“Whatever your travels will throw
at you, you never have to worry
about your Kathmandu gear
because you know it’ll deal with
it seamlessly; adapting to the
environment, to the situation.”
This season, we’re particularly
proud to bring you two of our
most innovative designs yet: the
Terrane Pack and the Corvus
Sleeping Bag.
“These products are a world
first and display some serious
engineering ability by our design
team,” says Darren.
We’ve also extended our XT range,
which is our pinnacle of technical
performance gear, and now offer
a complete 360degree XT apparel
and equipment range.
Lastly, we’re incredibly proud to
tell you that as of this season
all goose and duck down in our
Winter 16 and future gear is and
will be 100% certified responsibly
sourced. We’re one of the few
brands in the world to achieve
this.

INNOVATION HIGHLIGHT
Terrane
Adapt Pack
Reinforced
handles.
Our most
adaptive pack
Kathmandu has always made
versatile hybrid trolley bags that
can be worn as backpacks, but a
few years ago we asked ourselves:
can we reverse the challenge – an
adventure travel backpack that's
also got wheels?
“We asked the question: if you
can pull a handle out, why can't
you pull a wheel set out?” says
Kathmandu Product Designer
Blake Richardson.
The first prototype, nicknamed
‘Frankenstein’, set out to test this
idea. Two trolley handles were
literally cobbled together – welded,
riveted, screwed and glued.
“I made the first prototype,
dragged it around the car park,
poured sand and gravel in it,
curbed it, all with 30kg in the
bag – and it seemed to handle it
fairly well. The next step was more
prototyping and testing.”
It’s taken two years of revisions
and prototypes to get from
‘Frankenstein’ to the launch of the
Terrane Adapt Pack.
The final wheel system is so
innovative, it’s a world-first – a
patent is pending. The pull-out
system means the pack can
accommodate our top-end C3
travel and hiking harness system.
“The whole design ethos is
that you fluff around less with
your pack and spend more
time adventuring,” says Blake.
“It's designed to grasp every
opportunity. There's no excuses
that you don't have the right
gear.”
The Terrane Adapt is now
available as part of our Winter
16 range along with a whole
collection of products that fit
with the theme ‘adapt’.
“It's a flagship piece for the
adapt message,” says Blake.
“The whole purpose of its
creation was because there was
the need for a travel bag to
adapt.”

XT Fitzgerald
ngx™ Boots
1000 days in
development
It’s the final piece in the puzzle for
the XT range. An Italian-made,
three-season mountaineering boot
that’s taken 1000 days to perfect.
Simon Pease is Kathmandu's Senior
Footwear Product Manager. He's
been involved in the footwear
industry for 20 years and says the
Fitzgerald boot is the boot he's
been wanting to create for a long
time.
“We've been working on this
idea for five years, but it's been in
serious development for 1000 days
now.”
The brief was born when exploring
the mountains of New Zealand.
“It needed to be tough to handle
the rough rock and greywake. It
needed to be waterproof to handle
the snow and it needed to be light
enough to handle long walks,” says
Simon.
The brief became a concept
and the concept went to Italy to
become a prototype. Enter Best in
Field Tester, mountaineering and ski
guide and instructor Ben Corcoran,
who has been part of Kathmandu's
professional gear-testing program
since its inception.

“I can honestly say I've given the
Fitzgerald a thrashing. It's had a
couple of hundred days use over
three years and it's held together
really, really well. I've worn it in the
snow, in the volcanoes, all over
Arthur's Pass, tramping around
Makarora and even caving down
Howard's hole in Takaka Hill. If I
was buying one boot for general
New Zealand adventuring in the
back country, this would be the
boot I'd choose. And it is the boot
I choose. So that is probably the
ultimate endorsement from me.”

XT 360˚R ANGE
LAND,
WATER,
ICE.
BY LAUREL WINTERBOURNE, GUEST WRITER
AND SOUTH AMERICA CREW MEMBER.
Ari and Tayla, part of our South
America crew, take their first steps
onto Grey Glacier. Tayla’s eyes grow
wide with the wonder and awe of
walking on an ancient and massive
frozen river. We climb up to ice
caves and leap over crevasses that
descend 50 to 100 metres down.
The weather changes from wind
and rain to sun and back to rain
every few minutes, but it’s barely
noticeable. We are dry and warm.
Our focus remains on the immense
beauty around us.
Patagonia is a wild place where
weather forecasts are useless. One
minute the rain needles your face,
hail sputters down and turns to
sleet and the next minute, clouds
part to reveal blue skies.
12
The wind can blow someone off
a trail and make waterfalls run
in reverse. To enjoy the region’s
unpredictable and extreme
conditions, it is essential to have
dependable gear. The XT range
was specifically designed for
these extreme conditions.
As we crossed water, land and
ice, all while enduring rain, snow,
sun, wind and freezing temps, the
XT range enabled us to adapt to
each condition and fully engage
in the experience. We let the
gear do the work. There’s no such
thing as bad weather as long as
you’re wearing the XT range.

MOUNTAIN SPORTS
Jardin GORE-TEX Jacket v2
Be prepared
to ignore the
weather.
Forget ‘bad weather’. The only
thing that holds you back from
outdoor adventures is not having
the right gear.
The key to enjoying winter
excursions – be it hiking, camping,
rafting, fishing... (you name it!)
– is staying warm and dry. That
means choosing layers that are
waterproof and insulating, as well
as moisture-wicking, quick-drying
and breathable.
Your base-layer wicks moisture
away from your skin, so you
can keep going without feeling
clammy, damp, or getting chills
from cold sweat on your skin.
Designed to withstand wet weather
conditions when tackling the outdoors.
It’s fully waterproof, windproof and
breathable, with abrasion-resistant
fabric for carrying packs. This highperforming jacket is comfortable and
easy to wear: it’s lighter than you’d
expect, with clever weather-proof
features and an articulated fit that
allows full range of movement.

Your mid-layer keeps you warm
by trapping in body heat, and
your outer-layer protects you
from the elements – extreme

Using this three-tiered layer
approach, you can layer up or

weather conditions you find
yourself in. Being prepared
is key – and that’s where our
mountain sports range comes
in. Because weather shouldn’t
hold you back.

WHERE NATURE
GOES WILD
BY TAYL A GENTLE, GUEST WRITER
AND SOUTH AMERICA CREW MEMBER.
Straddling the sparsely populated
tip of Chile and Argentina,
Patagonia is a place of wild
South American extremes. It’s a
place where purple, snow-dusted
peaks loom above grassy, rolling
steppe; where bareback gauchos
(cowboys) share forested trails
with elusive pumas; where the
elements have complete, and
unforgiving, rule.
To reach the granite faces involves
a fairly arduous four hour hike.
The beginning is the worst - it’s
exactly the kind of gradual incline
I hate. The kind of zig zag that
pulls on your joints and sends
lactic bubbling through your calf
muscles. Our porters, Jonathan
and Sebastian, encourage us to
take rest stops, but all I can think
about is making it into the valley.
Almost a week into a trip, we
tackle the trek up to the Torres
Del Paine. Arguably Chilean
Patagonia’s star attraction, the
‘towers of blue’ are considered
a bucket list item for travellers
exploring the region.
When you reach the top, every
single cell in you is reawakened. All
I remember is the quiet. The quiet
and the condors and the rest of my
group sitting on a boulder, taking
in the vista. Snow lightly dusting
their shoulders.
And I remember being so happy
to be there, at those heights,
with those people.
New friends in a newly discovered
world, that’s what travel is all
about. It’s about being redcheeked and wind-burned with
knotted hair, eating a cold packed
lunch 20kms into a hike and filling
your drink bottle from the fold of
a glacier. ‘You’re hiking the Torres
Del Paine’, I remind myself, ‘you’re
hiking the Torres Del Paine, and it’s
a Tuesday’. I think I might be on
another planet.

3
Take breaks
Kids have pretty small

Summit Club
Treks
Race to the top
Summit Club Member Adventures
In 2015, Leif Christensen and Melissa
Lloyd took on one of the world’s
toughest mountain foot races: the
Tenzing Hilary Everest Marathon.
Taking place 5,364m above sea level,
the marathon requires a 17-day trek
through the Himalayas just to get to
the starting line.
Leif recalled that it was like nothing
he had experienced; “Running the
marathon was gruelling in every way
I had anticipated – and then more.
There was no smooth place to put a
foot down so your leg muscles were
constantly engaged.
All the trails were rocky and I think
we trod on pretty much every type of
ground surface possible, i.e. snow, ice,
rocks (of all sizes), mud, sand, dirt – and
even yak poo! It was generally sunny
and warm during the day, but night
time got down to -10degrees.
The whole adventure was epic and we
would absolutely do it again. My only
advice to others wanting to run the
marathon is do lots of hill running on
uneven and rocky ground and lots and
lots of squats in the gym!”
Looking back, Leif and Melissa are
stoked for more than reasons of
personal achievement; they also raised
several thousand dollars for Riding for
the Disabled SA, and the Australian
Himalayan Foundation.

Experience
Momorangi
DOC Partnership
Kathmandu has partnered with
the New Zealand Department
of Conservation (DOC) and
Marlborough Sounds Restoration Trust
to help regenerate native forest and
develop a new educational experience
in Momorangi Bay, situated in the
Marlborough Sounds.
This is where Kathmandu, the
Marlborough Sounds Restoration
Trust and DOC have stepped in to
remove invasive wilding pines and help
reintroduce various species to restore
the ecosystem. The programme has
seen 200 native trees planted with
many more yet to come.
Through Kathmandu’s ‘Share the
Dream’ programme, employees
can contribute part of their salary
to supporting organisations and
charities. ‘Experience Momorangi’ is
one such programme.
As part of the programme, a 400
metre Experience Momorangi walk
(that starts behind the campground)
was developed. Its interactive panels
help walkers learn about the birds,
insects, plants and pests of the forest,
along with activity booklets that are
written for 5-12 year olds.
Much of the Marlborough Sounds
was logged, burned and farmed
during the early 1900s, destroying
native forest. But since 1954 the hill
slopes around Momorangi Bay were
earmarked for a scenic reserve along
with a flat area camp ground, now
attracting up to 23,000 campers
each year.
While the forest on the hills
surrounding the campground has
rapidly regenerated since 1954, many
of the canopy and emergent species
in Momorangi Bay are very rare or
missing so regeneration has stalled.
Momorangi is a fantastic location
to consider when planning your next
summer camping holiday.

TRE AD LIGHTLY
100%
Responsibly
Sourced
goose and
duck down
Drum roll please. As of now, all goose
and duck down in our new and future
outdoor clothing and equipment is
and will be 100% responsibly sourced.
We’re incredibly proud of this
commitment, and it’s been a long
journey to get here.
We have always taken animal
welfare seriously. However, due to
the complexities in gaining absolute
transparency in our global supply
chain, it has been difficult to 100%
confirm that all the down we use in
our entire outdoor gear range has
been sourced from birds that have
been treated ethically and humanely.
Until now.
32
Enter the Responsible Down
Standard. Launched in 2014, the RDS
is the world’s most comprehensive,
third-party certified animal welfare
and traceability standard that
ensures the humane treatment of
geese and ducks – a standard we
jumped at the chance to join.
The RDS goes beyond preventing
practices such as foie gras (force
feeding) and live plucking. It enables
the birds to live healthy lives, express
innate behaviours and not suffer
from pain, fear or distress. The
standard also follows the chain of
custody from farm to product, so
consumers can be confident that the
down and feathers in the products
they choose are truly RDS.
Down is one of the highest-quality
and best-performing materials to
use in insulated outdoor gear, like
jackets and sleeping bags. Not
only does down have significant
insulation value, this natural fibre
is also incredibly lightweight and
easy to compress, making it the
fill of choice for many professional
outdoor adventurers.
Now you can be confident that
when you buy high quality down
jackets and down sleeping bags
at Kathmandu, the down is 100%
ethically sourced too.

1.2 million plastic bottles1
reclaimed from landfill so far
If you could use outdoor gear that’s
high-performing and dramatically
helps save the planet – would you?
That’s the rhetorical question we
asked ourselves in 1994, when we
began using recycled fibre in our
outdoor gear.
Made from recycled materials such as
plastic bottles, Repreve recycled fibre is
now used in a wide range of our bestselling items, including the Method
Pack and XT Surna Hooded Jacket.
Thanks to this expansion in our range
and you choosing Kathmandu gear
made with Repreve, this year alone,
we’ve saved a whopping 1.2 million
plastic bottles1 from ending up in
landfill.
Yet the benefits go further. Not only
does up-cycling plastic bottles reduce
the waste to landfill, it also reduces
the need for newly refined crude oil
to make new plastic, which is a nonrenewable energy source available in
finite quality.
“Repreve has been a great success
story for us and therefore we expanded
it into our popular Tanker Cargo
range, so that we can further scale
the positive impact of using recycled
fibres,” says Manu Rastogi, Fabric
Development Manager at Kathmandu.
Respecting the environment is
hugely important for Kathmandu
and our consumers. “That's why we
are already using more and more
sustainable materials in our products
– and we are testing new ones all the
time,” says Manu.
“Customers today are increasingly
interested in sustainability, and the
search for alternative materials with
a limited environmental impact is an
important part of our efforts towards
a more sustainable production.”
Kathmandu gear is a good start,
but there’s ample opportunities for
further innovation.
“Our goal is to keep the momentum
going and we have got much bigger
things planned for the next year,”
he says.
“We want to make sustainable
choices in outdoor products
desirable and accessible for as many
people as possible.”
Manu says reaching over ‘1 million
plastic bottles’ recycled into
