Prepay for Business After
Hours and save $$$
These laminated passports are great for businesses that regularly send
representatives to Business After Hours. Monthly checks or expense
reimbursements are eliminated. And, best of all, at $48 each you save
up to $72 annually over the usual $5-10 donation.
Passports are not specific to one person, so multiple people may enter
on one passport. An RSVP is still requested. Interested? Please contact
Kristin Holt at [email protected] or call the Chamber office at
776-8829.
Briggs Auto★ hosted another outstanding Halloween-themed Business After Hours last month. Over 260
Chamber members were treated to live music and a wonderful selection of appetizers, desserts and
beverages.
Door Prize winners included: Lori Bishop with RSVP of the Flint Hills, Lisa Coffey with Cox
Communications, Andrew Glazier with Manhattan Broadcasting, Tammy Hatesohl with United Bank &
Trust, Sean Ruth with Redi Systems and Penny Riniker with Big Lakes Developmental Center.
The Chamber gave away a one-year pass to Business After Hours to Nancy DeWeese with SportClips
Haircuts and $50 in Little Apple Dollars to Yogie Potter with Holiday Inn at the Campus.
By any standards, jet service from Manhattan Regional Airport to Dallas
and Chicago has been a success. Growth has been exceptional beginning service with two flights to Dallas, moving to three daily, to
adding Chicago as a destination and beginning November 17th a
second to Chicago come on line!
“This success is directly related to the support received from the entire
region. By both booking travel from MHK and telling others about the
advantages of flying from Manhattan Regional, the airport has become
a model for other small airports to emulate,” said Airport Director,
Peter Van Kuren.
The airport isn’t standing still:
• A new restaurant will open in early November
• Paved and lighted parking is being expanded by 230 spaces,
and will remain free
• New carpet is being installed in the near future
• Rental cars from both Enterprise and Hertz are on-site

member Terry DeWeese. Above: Chamber Board Chair Fred Willich and

A publication of the Manhattan Convention & Visitors Bureau
CVB Staff Attends Annual
Tourism Conference
After three days in the office,
I was given the opportunity
to hit the road with the rest
of the CVB staff. What a first
week it turned out to be, as
we spent Monday through
Thursday in Lawrence at one
of the biggest tourism association events of the year.
The Kansas Tourism Conference
is held annually and sponsored by
the Tourism Industry Association
of Kansas (TIAK) and Kansas
Department of Wildlife, Parks,
and Tourism. TIAK membership
consists of convention and visitor’s bureaus, hospitality industries and Kansas attractions.
This convention allows the
tourism and travel industry of
Kansas to coordinate ideas and
strategies on maximizing the ability to bring people to the state.
Tourism dollars contribute to
essential services like lodging,
food and beverage, and retail
sales, not to mention keeping
alive those attractions which rely
on visitors to pay the bills. According to the latest annual report
from Travel KS, tourism in the
state has an economic impact of
$5.46 billion, and one in nine
Kansas workers owes his or her
job to tourism. The Manhattan
CVB uses this conference to stay
up to date on the latest trends
and utilize the latest technologies
for getting visitors into Manhattan.
The Little Apple® was strongly
featured in this year’s conference,
and won awards for promotional
pieces, and sponsored a breakfast showcasing the Flint Hills Dis-
covery Center. A
fly-through video
tour showing the
anticipated final
result of the Flint
Hills Discovery
Center was shown.
The video stirred
excitement about
Kansas’s newest
attraction which will be an advocate for the Flint Hills
Kansas Governor Sam Brownback arrived Tuesday morning to
give the conference welcome.
Prior to the Travel and Tourism
division presenting their annual
report, Secretary Robin Jennison and Assistant Secretary
Linda Craghead, both of Department of Wildlife, Parks and
Tourism spoke as well.
Christy Chase, Convention Sales
Manager and Karen Hibbard,
Director of the Convention & Visitors Bureau and Vice President of
the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce, facilitated a shirtsleeves
session discussing conventions
and meetings with other CVB professionals representing all corners
of Kansas. Karen serves on the
TIAK board, spending the past
year as Secretary on the executive
committee, and during the 2012
calendar year will be offering her
services as vice president of TIAK.
Countdown to Discovery
The feature new attraction for Manhattan,
the Flint Hills Discovery Center, continues
to make progress towards its springtime
2012 opening. The most recent event
brought Members of the Manhattan Masonic
Lodge and the Grand Lodge of Kansas to
perform a cornerstone dedication for the
Discovery Center. The last time a cornerstone dedication like this was held in
Manhattan was in 1962.
In keeping with tradition, the Masons
spread corn, representing nourishment,
wine, representing refreshment, and oil,
representing joy, on the cornerstone. These
three things are needed to sustain life, as
told by the Masons.
The Jammin’ Northstars of Northview
Elementary were on-site to provide music,
including the national anthem as part of
the morning’s festivities, involving about
250 people.
Robin Jennison, Kansas
Secretary for Wildlife,
Parks and Tourism was
involved as well,
saying, “There are less
and less people who
actively get out and enjoy
the outdoors and if we
can’t get the next generation to understand the
outdoors, to understand
the importance of our natural resources, we are not
going to have people that
want to protect them.”
The grand opening of the Flint Hills
Discovery Center is still slated
for April, 2012.
This conference gave me a great
feel for the tourism landscape in
Kansas. As an “old hand” in my
second week in this position, I
can definitively say that Manhattan is in good hands, and we are
only looking to be better and do
more in promoting Manhattan.
I’m already full of ideas for next
year!

Their Service - Our Freedom
It’s unavoidable here, to be touched by military service, with Fort Riley
being adjacent to Manhattan. Show your support, and recognition of
what these men and women have chosen to give in their service to our
country by participating in some of the Veteran’s Day events. Their
service-our freedom is the theme for the 2011 Veteran’s Day Parade in
Manhattan, KS, Friday, November 11.
Begin the day at 7 a.m. with a biscuits and gravy breakfast at the
American Legion, 114 McCall Road, followed by a 9:30 a.m. parade on
Poyntz Ave. The Parade will travel from the Manhattan Town Center to
City Park. A post-parade ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m. at City
Hall auditorium. If you can’t get away during the day, there will be a
6:00 p.m. Recognition Honor’s Banquet at the American Legion on
Friday evening.
November 11 is set aside as a special day to honor Veterans, but the
other 364 days of the
year still should be
used to support active
troops. Visit
www.flinthillsveteransday.com to find
other great links for
local and international
troop support.
Who is Isaac Goodnow?
Tuesday, November 15, Cheryl Collins, Director of
the Riley County Historical Museum will present a
brown bag lunch series on Isaac Goodnow: His
Life and Influence. Coffee and tea will be served.
Please bring a brown bag lunch to enjoy. Admission is free to all and the talk begins at noon, at
the Riley County Historical Museum, 2309 Claflin.

Do you like to run rain or shine? Snow or mud? Shin splints or no shin
splints? The 4th Annual Winter Runderland 5K will be Sunday, December 4, 2011. You need to register for this race, make sure to do so by
Saturday, December 3.

November 2011
A big thank-you to Richard Pitts, for representing Manhattan in
Wichita’s Kansas' 150 celebration parade. Mr. Pitts, Director of
Wonder Workshop, took the The Classroom On Wheels; a school bus
modified to be a hands-on educational activity center for grades K-5
that travels to you to the festival. The statewide 150 event took place
October 8. The Classroom On Wheels went as The Northstar Express,
teaching about the Underground Railroad. Thank you Richard for
sharing this important piece of Kansas' history.
Flat Burb Sighting!
One of our ‘take-aways’ from the 2011 Kansas Tourism Conference is a tiny travel-sized representative for
Travel KS. Travel KS moved around the state during the summer in a very recognizable suburban wrapped
with Kansas scenery. Kansas Wildlife, Parks and Tourism has challenged those attending the conference to
travel with the “flat Stanley” version of their suburban, the “flat burb”, and photograph where the” flat burb”
ends up. Those generating the most interactions will be the kick-off point for next year’s Travel KS summer
tour. So make sure to find us on Facebook, visitmanhattanks, and keep track of where we take the “flat burb”!
Comment, carry-on, share it with friends, and generally
make it a big deal.
Last summer the 3D burb traveled more than 15,000 miles
to 56 locations attempting to create a social media buzz.
They received over 121,000 interactions. If you want to be
sighted with the “flat burb,” or plan on taking a really exotic
trip, contact Autumn Shoemaker, CVB Marketing Coordinator at [email protected], or 785-776-8829

Bcome a friend the Manhattan CVB and win great prizes! That’s more than most of your other Facebook

Marketing Coordinator
As the new marketing coordinator for the Manhattan Convention &
Visitor’s Bureau, I’d like to take a moment to say how excited I am to
be on staff. My name is Autumn Shoemaker, and though not born
in, I was raised primarily in Manhattan. I graduated May, 2010 with a
degree in print journalism and a minor in leadership studies from
Kansas State. I love this town and can’t wait to start giving back to the
community in a daily fashion. I owe a lot of my passion for and knowledge of this town to Harry’s, Sunset Zoo, and my college experiences.
I have a few other passions in life, including but not limited to; coffee,
photography, music, my rescued miniature schnauzer Penelope, and
the man who rescued her when she was hit by a car.
Light It Up
The annual Mayor's Spirit of the Holidays Parade of Lights will happen
Friday, December 2. This parade is always full of frosty fun, so be sure
to bundle up and bring the whole family to the Manhattan Town Center.
Enjoy festivities along the route down Poyntz Ave, and join the other
holiday participants at Triangle Park in Aggieville where the mayor will
light a beautiful Christmas tree. Bring your extra canned goods to
donate to the Breadbasket.
Middle East in Manhattan
While walking the route will help keep you warm, those involved in the
actual parade will have the chance to win prizes. For more information
contact Maribeth Kieffer, Executive Director of Flint Hills Breadbasket
at 785-537-0730. Efforts benefit the Flint Hills Breadbasket.
The Swihart farm hosts the event every year since its inception in 1994. The live production requires more
space each year with over 100 volunteers and last year’s attendees reading more than 1,500. Volunteers for
Bethlehem Revisited are primarily Grace Baptist Church members, but also include area students and other
churches. For more information contact Grace Baptist Church at 785-776-0424, or the Swiharts at
785-539-1373.
The annual Bethlehem Revisited put on by Grace Baptist Church will fall on December 2, 3 and 4th this
year, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Friday events start with the first group departure at 6:20 p.m. and go
through 8:45 p.m. Saturday/Sunday times are 5:00 p.m.-8:45 p.m. Attendees should meet at Keats Park
Welcome Center and busses will take guests to the Swihart farm where the event is held. Though tickets are
required to attend, they are free to obtain at Varneys, Manhattan Running Company, or Staples.

Deer Season
By Todd Lovin
Talking deer in Kansas generates a variety of opinions, which then creates
discussions as strong as the recent winds that shut down portions of I-70
in Western Kansas. While people’s feelings may be varied, most folks
agree that Kansas has a strong and popular deer hunting tradition. One
of the most passionate groups is the archers. Archery deer season began
September 19 and runs through December 31. Regular firearms deer
season begins November 30 and runs through December 11. For a complete list of seasons which hunters
can participate in consult the local KDWPT office, or the internet at www.ksoutdoors.com.

Bayer Construction wins national award
Bayer Construction★, of Manhattan, won the 2011 Non-Coal Reclamation
award presented by the National Association of State Land Reclamationists. Bayer won the award for reclaiming a 20-acre limestone quarry along
K-177 in Riley County.
Bayer Construction’s original plans were to fulfill the owner’s request that
the land be returned to grazing pastures with smooth brome grass as the
vegetation. Heavy equipment was used to contour the land and to place
top soil and seed. To increase usability of the site, a small pond was constructed to facilitate grazing potential.
“We not only comply with regulatory standards and requirements, we take
a proactive stance on reclamation because we believe in the vision it supports. We feel that by restoring disturbed land to a productive agricultural
based ecosystem we have a positive effect on our community, our environment and our industry.” Kelly Briggs, President of Bayer Construction,
said.
Bayer Construction Company, Inc. was started in 1935. Their operations
include civil site preparation, water and sewer line construction, heavy
highway construction, and crushed limestone operations. Bayer operates
several portable crushing plant locations throughout North Central and
Northeast Kansas. THe company employs 140 people and has been
employee-owned since 1993.

New Program for Existing Businesses
The Washburn Small Business
Development Center has
recently partnered with Profit
Think Tank, a Kansas
company, to provide a
business management
program for medium-sized,
growth-oriented businesses in
our area. This partnership
Profit Competencies consists
of 60 competencies, in 3 competency groups, which drive
the ongoing success of any
business. The program
involves a facilitated workshop,
which is designed to work
through the Profit Competencies assessment with an individual entrepreneur or members of a company’s management team and then develop a
suggested plan of action based
on the system. Ongoing free
consulting support from the
program’s developer and Small
Business Development Center
consultants helps ensure follow-up and implementation.
Initial feedback from Manhattan area companies who have
participated in this program
has been positive with implementation of action plans currently taking place. I am very
optimistic that there is an
opportunity for real impact
from Profit Competencies and
look forward to working with
local businesses to utilize this
program.
Please contact our office to
learn more about applying for
the Profit Competencies program and for information on
additional resources for existing and growing businesses in
our community.

Hiring Success Stories
Cody was a K-State grad with several years of work experience who was looking for a job. He wanted to stay
in Manhattan and e-mailed his resume to Myranda. She sent his resume to Chamber members in his field
of finance. In addition, every two weeks, Myranda sent him links to jobs he may be interested in. Cody says,
“the emails are a useful resource to the openings that apply to my interests and skill set.” Cody is now
employed at Waddell & Reed. Congrats Cody!

Annual AUSA Meeting
Military Update
Military Relations Luncheon
The MRC had their monthly meeting on October 5 at the Manhattan
Country Club. The guest speaker was Interim Division Command
Sergeant Major Jim Thomson. CSM Thomson gave an update on all the
Brigades of the 1st Infantry Division. He helped explain the Army’s movement towards shorter deployments and longer dwell times at home. Art
DeGroat gave an update on the local AUSA Chapter. Bevin Landrum
gave a brief update on the Officer Civilian Spouses Club’s Art Auction
taking place October 14. Proceeds from the auction are given to the Fort
Riley Combined Scholarship Fund and other charitable organizations.
Whitney Lukenbill gave a brief summary of the Central Prairie Honor
Flights. This organization helps veterans travel to see their memorials in
Washington D.C. free of charge.
The beginning of October brought the Annual Association of the United
States Army Meeting and Expo in Washington D.C. We had a large
contingency of Manhattan delegates come and partake in the meeting.
During the time in D.C., our delegates had a chance to meet with the
Commanding General of Fort Riley and past CG’s at the Chapter Social
on Tuesday night. The group also had opportunities to visit Capitol
Hill where they met with the elected officials from Kansas. Overall the
group got to get their talking points and issues to the Senator and Reps
and also had a great time in D.C.
CSM Thompson briefing the MRC
on the upcoming redeployments
and deployments of the post.
Fort Riley Day at K-State Football and Fort Riley Apple Day
The last two weekends in September were busy ones in the Flint Hills region. Fort Riley hosted its annual
Apple Day Festival on post that was open to the public. Great weather helped the post gather over 7,000
people to enjoy apple pies, cavalry demonstrations, food booths, vendor booths and craft booths. The
public was given a chance to come onto post and see static displays of armored vehicles, helicopters and
tanks. They also had a chance to shoot 3 semi-automatic guns identical to the ones the Soldiers use in
battle.
K-State hosted the Baylor Bears and the Fort Riley Soldiers and families at their annual Fort Riley Day. The
great weather brought many people out to Bill Snyder Stadium and to Cat Town, where BriggsAuto.com and
Brett Allison hosted a tailgate for Fort Riley. Families enjoyed pulled pork and hot dogs. Purple camo hats
were given to the Soldiers. Door prizes donated by many local businesses were given away to Soldiers and
families who were in attendance. The Gunpowder and Lead, Fort Riley Band played 2 sets of country and
rock music that kept the tailgate mood. During the game, after the 1st Division Band joined the K-State
Marching Band on the field for the National Anthem, the Soldiers of Fort Riley help cheer the Cats onto a
victory in a wild game against Baylor.
Front row: Military Community Liaison Whitney Lukenbill, Mayor Jim Sherow,
City Commissioner Rich Jankovich. Back row: City Manager Ron Fehr, Dick and
