1996 Grand Sport History
At the 2000 Gathering, John Heinricy (C5R driver par excellence and previous GM Corvette Engineer) spoke to a group of
Grand Sport owners -- he told us how the 1996 Grand Sport and Collectors Editions were conceived.
The Corvette Design Team wanted to do a fitting 'close' for the long-running C4 body style. The 'car guys' had created the mules
for the Grand Sport in 1993 and showed it to a small group of dealers and marketers that help set brand direction.
The feedback was that the design was 'too bold' and they only forecast sales of 500-1000 units. That wasn't enough sales -- they
were all worried that the coming C5 would hurt the last year of the C4. But Heinricy and others were pushing hard to have GM
do something different and bring the GS to the market.
At the coffee pot one day, Heinricy and Dave Hill were talking about the problem. One of them (he couldn't remember which)
thought for a minute and said, "How about we have two special models? We'll make an unlimited number of commemorative
specials and the limited-run GS."
In that room they set the maximum number of Grand Sports at 1,000 since that's what the marketing guys said they could sell.
The Collectors Editions, on the other hand, eventually comprised nearly 25% of the total 1996 production!
As a result of that coffee room conversation, the planning began for something the General had never done -- two very different,
special versions of the Corvette in a single model year.
One other note: Heinricy said he had a real fight on his hands for the special VIN sequencing for the GS models. After doing a
special series for the ZR1s, GM instituted a policy banning the practice. John said he and others felt strongly about the need to
make the Grand Sports "even more special" and fought the political types to make it happen.
In case you didn't know, John Heinricy still owns 1996 GS #0001... the first off the line!

Meeting Information
Corvette Club of Texas (CCT)
Monthly Membership
Meeting
Held every third Friday of
the month, at 7:30 p.m. at
Friendly Chevrolet, 2754 North
Stemmons Freeway, Dallas. All
members, visitors and Corvette
owners are Welcome.
Following each CCT monthly
membership meeting, a CCT
after club social event is hosted
by a CCT Member, starting at
approximately 8:30 p.m.
From the Editor
Man, this has been a weird month for the Wagners. Paulette got sick on the 10th, and was
nice enough to share it with me so I was sick on the 12th. My head felt about 3 sizes too big
with some really swollen sinuses and a pretty high fever. For the first time I can remember I
had to take 4 straight days off work. Thankfully the Olympics filled some of the time as I was
sitting on the sofa suffering.. I know a LOT more about curling now. I was still sick for the
membership meeting, the first, I believe, since joining the club. But that wasn’t the end of it
for me. I started feeling bad again on the 22nd, this time in the, ah.., lower parts, but so far not
bad enough to stay home from work. Hopefully March will be better!
As far as Corvette stuff, not many CCT events are happening yet in 2006. However there are
lots of other clubs having events to participate in. Check out the calendar for dates and contact
information. There is something every weekend from now until December. We had the
Possum Kingdom parade, which I had to miss because of the above.
I continue to get submissions to the newsletter: Thank you Paul, Charles, Carol and the
officers. I am having a bit of difficulty with my new e-mail address. Please submit everything
to [email protected] as in the past, but just to be safe also submit to [email protected]. I’d rather
get 2 copies than none. That is the reason Mitch’s President’s Prerogative was missing last
month. It is probably still out there flying around cyber-space somewhere.
Monthly Board Meeting
Held on the Monday before the
third Friday of the month at
7:30 p.m. at Friendly Chevrolet.
All members are invited to
attend.

The Corvetter
President’s Prerogative
It seems that I missed the February newsletter due to some email problems between Joe and myself. So this will cover both
months.
a Saturday night, please contact Brian. Let’s all get behind
Brian and come up with some new and exciting events for
CCT this YEAR!!!!!!!
Things for the February newsletter:
We have not had our meeting ending raffle for the last two
months. PLEASE bring a gift to the March meeting and
remember, you get a FREE raffle ticket for each gift you bring.
The raffle is one of the only money raising events we have for
the club on an ongoing basis.
Well, the turn out for our first meeting of the year was not that
great. Please be sure and mark your calendars for the next
meeting on February 17th at 7:30PM. For those of you that
missed the meeting, Paul and Mary had a conversation with
the Cowtown Corvette Club members and they have invited
us to join them on any of their drive and eat events for this
coming year. We in turn will extend an invitation for any of
our trips to Cowtown Vettes. This should help us to have more
opportunities to drive our cars and see new places. All ideas
are welcome!!!!!
Our trip to the Bahamas was canceled at the last minute so
we thought we were going join 8-10 cars going to go to the
Possum Kingdom Mardi Gras parade. Now is that a deal or
what!!! Sorry the weather caused so many of you to cancel
out. The four cars that went had a great time. The weather
broke just before the start of the parade and as usual the
street was lined with grown-ups and children begging for
BEADS!!!!!. See Carol’s article about the trip in this month’s
newsletter.
Bob Stephens has volunteered to be the new NCM Ambassador.
Many thanks to James Powdrill for all his work the last couple
of years as the NCM Ambassador
Looking forward to seeing ALL of you next month!!!!!!!
Thank you for your continued support.
Mitchell Factor
OK, now for the March newsletter:
President, CCT
We had a better turn out for the February meeting even though
we were experiencing some of the coldest and wettest weather
we have had in Dallas this winter. I want to thank all who
braved the inclement weather to come. We got some other good
news at the February meeting; Brian Gelles has graciously
volunteered to be the new activities chairperson. So if you
have any ideas for a weekend trip or just a drive and eat for

The Corvetter
Possum Kingdom Mardi Gras
Parade 2006
had a friendly staff and great hamburgers! They were busily
decorating the place with yellow, purple, and green balloons.
We had a leisurely lunch and watched the rain start and stop
several times. After lunch was cleared away, the guys staged
the cars along with other parade participants while the ladies
stayed in out of the rain.
We met at Texas Motor Speedway as planned, and were on
the road by about 9:15am: Mel Roggenbuck in the lead car,
followed by me and Mitch, Ben and Billie Loflin, and Brian and
Janet Gelles. With rain lightly sputtering off the windshields,
we headed out on 114 to the Bridgeport exit and turned west
towards Possum Kingdom. The landscape was almost entirely
gray and black except for pockets of yellow and gold grass and
weeds along the roadsides. Large groups of tiny black birds sat
huddled together on the power lines in the cold rain and wind.
Carol Factor
There were some that were still able to imagine the land of
Possum Kingdom blanketed in sunshine – well, maybe at least
picture a somewhat drier day than we started off with that
morning. Thinking of those adorable toddlers along side the
road with outstretched arms was enough to push me out the
door in the rain.
Carol Factor
Carol Factor
The scenery changed the closer we got to Possum Kingdom…
Low hills and dense trees now barely visible through the light
fog and drizzle. I wish I could tell you that the sky was clearing
at this point and the sun was shining like the weather man
had predicted for the late morning. But as we pulled in to the
Rockin’ S Bar and Grill for lunch, it was STILL raining.
Carol Factor
It was slow going down the two lane highway while being stuck
behind a couple of trucks pulling horse trailers. We figured we
may as well take our time and be safe on the slick roads anyway.
Plenty of time to power up later. I’ll have to admit that it was at
this point in the trip I had thoughts of being home sleeping late.
Robert Schneider from Weatherford, a potential new CCT
member, and his son, Michael joined us for lunch and he drove
his 1994 Corvette in the parade with our group. The restaurant

C5 Fuel Filter Replacement
Relieve the pressure in the fuel line at
the rail.
Disconnect the battery.
Carol Factor
Raise the rear of the car, best done
from the rear subframe.
If you have an A4, space it tight and
it helps if you remove the catback
portion of the exhaust on the drivers
side. The filter is just up under the frame in front of the drivers
side rear wheel.
Finally, it was time to start the parade. Would you believe it
– the rain stopped just as we started down the road! We were
able to roll the windows down and toss the goodies out the
window with no problem! The parade had many cool floats and
horseback riders just as in years past. It was a huge success
with many, many people lining the streets even with the wet
weather!
Remove the bolt holding the filter assembly to the frame. This
is where it gets messy... Remove the two quick connect fittings
towards the rear of the filter, just squeeze the blueish colored
tabs and pull the two lines from the rear side of the filter. DO
NOT be right under this - a couple of cups of gas will come
pouring out - trust me I got soaked...
Using the fuel-line disconnect tool, remove the line on the
front side of the filter. This is tight. I was worried about
snapping the line when I did mine but it will come out...
Again, some gas will pour out and remember the filter itself
is full. You MUST use the fuel-line disconnect tool here. The
tool is made of metal or plastic and looks like a ring with a
cutout and tail that slide between the connector on the line and
the hard tab on the filter. Same tool is used if you ever remove
the line from the fuel rail... It’s the 5/16” one.
Clean up all of the fuel that went everywhere.
Carol Factor
Put the new filter in place and bolt it down.
Reconnect the lines.
Reconnect the battery.
Turn the key in the ignition to pressurize the lines but do not
start. Do this two or three times.
Afterwards, our group joined some friends of ours for some
snacks and drinks at one of the local businesses, a real estate
company on the main highway. Then we headed out for –OK
– I know all we do is eat – but the next item on the agenda was
dinner. We went to a place called New York Hill which was
about 30 miles east of Possum Kingdom and famous for their
home cookin’. The place was pretty crowded and we enjoyed
the fried entries with cream gravy along with the country
atmosphere and friendly people. Full and happy, we headed
home.
Check for leaks.
Replace the catback if you removed it.
Lower the rear of the car.
Take it for a spin.
From the Corvette Forum
Let’s hope next year’s parade will still be on the CCT calendar
of events and that we will have better weather and more CCT
folks able to attend. All in all, it was a fun day with great
company of our fellow CCT members.

The Corvetter
One day he related a story to me about loaning the car to
a filming company that showed up at his door wanting to
“borrow” the car to do a TV commercial. Ed was so impressed
that they would want to use his car he quickly gave them the
keys and helped them load the car onto a rental Uhaul flat bed
truck. (I think you know by now where this story is going!).
by Paul Wolter
My most recent project that I am currently working on is a 1956
Corvette that our family acquired approximately 10 years ago
in a “car” for “cars” trade proposal presented to me by one of
CCT’s former club presidents, Ed Campbell.
Paul Wolter
Paul Wolter
Corvette Driver
Most of the current CCT members have never known Ed, one of
our more interesting and entertaining members.
Ed went back inside his home, mixed himself another drink
when the realization hit him. He did not have the name of the
company nor a phone number or a person’s name or location
where they were going to shoot the commercial, much less even
a small deposit or a business card. He wasn’t even sure if he
could identify them correctly!
Ed occasionally showed the Corvette and his idea of detailing
the car was to drive it to a self-service car wash, thrown in a
couple of quarters (one for soap and one for rinse), then let it air
dry on his way to the car show.
Several guys had loaded and hauled off the 56 Vette and Ed
was pretty certain that he would likely never see that Corvette
again…..in one piece anyway! He was pretty much resigned that
he had really screwed up BIG TIME and was contemplating
calling the police to report the theft of his prized Corvette.
Paul Wolter
Paul Wolter
Ed purchased the car out of state in 1988 and showed up one
evening at our membership meeting with his newest girlfriend
driving the old Vette, which I believe was the first, and only
Corvette he had ever owned. It was a presentable driver, and
that’s exactly what Ed did with it for 6 years.
So, Ed using his logic, and not wanting to appear pretty stupid
when the police write-up the theft report that the victim
willingly “helped” them make off with his car decides to give
the “film company” 24 hours to return the Corvette…and if not..
then he will call in the “borrowed”, uh, “stolen” car report.
He’d park the Vette, open the hood, put the top down, open the
trunk and take out a damp mildewed and dingy bath towel and
wipe up the water that leaked into the truck when washing the
car. Then he would stuff the towel back into a corner of the
trunk until he needed it to dry out the floor of the trunk the next
time he washed the old Vette at a car wash on his way to another
car show in several months.
About 11 PM that night Ed got lucky. The door bell rang and Ed
rushed to the door and was greeted by the filming crew who had
returned his car, still on the flat bed truck. Ed made a resolution
to never allow himself to get in that type of a situation ever
again.

The Corvetter
Several years go by and Ed called me one afternoon at work
and makes me an offer I couldn’t refuse. Paul, he says, I was
trimming the banana tree in the front yard today and I came
up with a proposal. (Ed doesn’t have a banana tree, and he has
never been known to work in the yard)!
valve and several other items, after which I will detail the
engine compartment.
Paul Wolter
I also plan on removing and having several of the bumpers
rechromed, then using the ’56 as a driver until I get our ’62
Corvette restoration completed. Then if I have enough energy
and ambition left, I will strip and repaint the ’56 Corvette.
Paul Wolter
Guests at the February Meeting
After some hesitation on my part, and a discussion with a close
friend who advised me to jump on the offer before Ed made a
similar offer to someone else, I called Ed the next day and told
him that we had a deal.
Charles Whitaker
His son David needs a car to drive, and Ed offers to trade me
the old ‘56 Corvette for a pretty nice ’57 Chevy Belair 2-door
hardtop, a $2,000 ’78 Audi and Kermie (my older green ‘79
Dodge pickup truck) that had been totaled out in a hailstorm a
year earlier. I was in agreement with everything, except letting
go of Kermie. After all, I had just repaired all the hail dents,
replaced the windshield and applied a fresh two-tone green
paint job on the truck (thus the name “Kermie” was developed),
and redid the carpeting and seat upholstery.
Stephen and Linda King
Our son, Scott, took the car (as we had restored the 57 Chevy as
a father-son project) and the 56 Vette spent the next 8 years in
his garage (mostly covered up) providing a temporary home for
some mice. After I finished the restoration of our ’69 Camaro
Z28 muscle car last year, I traded the Camaro to Scott for the 56
Corvette.
NCCC Governor’s Report
Due to the icy weather February 18th, the planning meeting for
the 2008 NCCC Convention in Oklahoma was cancelled. It will
probably be held in Fort Worth March 25th in conjunction with
the SW Region Awards Banquet. Stay tuned.
As you can see by the pictures over the past 5 months, I have
refinished most of the interior by doing some floor repair,
replacing the carpet, seat upholstery, door panels, kick panels,
repainting the center console, refinishing the interior stainless.
I have been working on improving the exterior by cleaning,
polishing and refinishing the exterior stainless.
Joann
I have replaced the radiator, battery, heater hoses and refinished
the air cleaners. I am currently rebuilding the heater control

Mary Wolter gave the membership report and welcomed two visitors tonight.
Mitch passed out some CCT business cards to members to give to potential new members. He said he would print some new cards
for the next meeting.
Mel will be leading the tour to the Mardi Gras parade at Possum Kingdom on February 25th. Please contact him so he can order
enough beads from the Chamber of Commerce to throw out during the parade. The club will pay for the beads. You can also bring
candy to throw out to the kids. Eight cars have signed up so far.
Paul Wolter reported that Cowtown has invited us to attend their events this year and we will be inviting them to attend our events.
Paul, also talked to Phil Schilt who has agreed to get in touch with our editor, Joe Wagner, and Paul with instructions to update our

Congratulations to Charles Whitaker who is now the club photographer and Gene will be his assistant. Charles said they were
expecting their second grandchild in a couple of weeks.
Congratulations to Brian Gelles for volunteering to be the new Activities Chairman. Joe Carion was appointed as Assistant
Activities Chairman, if he accepts the position.
Congratulations to Bob Stephens who is our new NCM Ambassador. He reported the museum had a new email address.
Discussed the CCT 50th anniversary in 2008. Need someone to chair the committee to organize an anniversary event and collection
of memorabilia. Also, need someone to volunteer for trophy case maintenance next month.
Charles Whitaker reported that Autorama was going on this weekend and he would be displaying his restored 1965 Red Mustang
convertible.
The meeting adjourned at 8:10 PM and everyone proceeded to Sugar Baby’s Barbecue arranged by Mitch and Carol Factor.

SHOWDOWN
APRIL 8&9,2006
It is time, once again, to kick the tires and light the fires for another great
weekend with the Texas Outlaws! Saturday will be filled with exciting DRAG
RACING action at Wichita Raceway Park. The traction problems associated
with last year’s event have been resolved! Saturday night we will have a hospitality
room open at the motel or you can participate in the Saturday night drags. Sunday
the racing action continues with 3 low-speed autocrosses at Red River Speedway
(next door to the drag strip). Trophies will be awarded for both days after the last
autocross.
Our host hotel is the Super 8 Motel located on U.S. Hwy 287–take the
Maurine Street exit (Exit 2--the motel is on the west side of the road, behind the
Whataburger). We have a block of rooms reserved for $45+tax per night, so make
your reservations before April 1st (front desk– 940-322-8880; tell them you’re with
the Texas Outlaws Corvette Club).
Friday night, registration and tech inspection will be at the host hotel.
Registration will be in the hospitality room and tech will be in the parking lot. They
will be open from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Weather permitting--the first 30 preregistered entrants will also receive tickets to Friday night’s Super Modified
Asphalt races at Red River Speedway!
