Okay, you just opened your U22 Checking Account. Congrats!
Now what?
Go to our website (www.gtefcu.org) which includes a link to CU@Home, our online account access. Login
with the member number and password that you were given and create your own login information. Now
take a look at everything you can do there...like set up balance alerts, transfer money to your friends
and family that have GTE FCU accounts, pay bills, etc. The most important thing? Balances! Check this
every day so you don’t spend more than the amount you have in your account! Who wants to waste $10
on a fee? Which is what it will cost you if you spend more than you have in your account, by the way. We
will waive one debit card overdraft per month, but after that, it’s ten bucks!
ATMs
You can also check your balance by requesting a balance inquiry at an ATM. You can
get cash or even deposit money at some. GTE FCU is a member of the CO-OP Network,
which means you get FREE access at 28,000 ATMs…just look for this symbol:
You can find CO-OP ATMs at most 7-Eleven stores. You’ll also find FREE GTE FCU-owned
ATMs at most of our branch locations and many McDonald’s restaurants.
Looking for the ATM nearest you?
Either visit www.gtefcu.org and click on ATM Locator or text your location
(address, intersection or zip code) to 692667 (MYCOOP) from your mobile phone
and receive a text back with CO-OP ATM locations closest to you.
Like CO-OP Network ATMs, 692667 (MYCOOP) is a free service, but check with your mobile phone
provider as standard text messaging rates apply. And don’t worry, you won’t receive any unsolicited
messages by using 692667 (MYCOOP).
In about 2 weeks you'll get your U22 debit card in the mail.
A couple things about debit cards:
Yeah, we know a debit card looks like a credit card, but it’s not
a credit card! It pulls the money from your checking account,
so you can only spend what you have in there! (Remember the
$10 fee?)
There are two ways to buy something with your debit card:
1. Enter your personal identification number (PIN) or
2.Sign the receipt
Yes!
Here’s a couple differences: PIN transactions hit your account right away and signature purchases
can take a few days to show up; so if you sign don’t forget that you have money in your account that is
already spent! Also, you earn reward points on signature transactions, but not on PIN.
You’ll get your PIN about two days after you get your card.
We send them separately for added security.
A few things you can do to protect your debit card (and your money!):
Sign your card as soon as you get it
Don’t write your PIN where someone else can find it
Don’t lose your card - keep it in a safe place
By the way, you will receive a loooong disclosure that explains the rules and regulations that come
with your account. You will also receive a disclosure with your debit card. Don’t freak out. If you have
questions, you can always talk to a human being at the credit union.
The disclosures cover, among other things:
Your responsibilities to us as a member
Our responsibilities to you as a financial institution
When and how you can access your money
Fees and service charges
What to do in the event of fraud or theft
U22 isn’t just about saving, spending, budgeting (or legal documents)!
It’s about guiding you in the right direction. It’s our mission to help you
gain the financial knowledge and security you need to get wherever
you want to go in life.
So take advantage of what we have to offer,
and don't hesitate to ask questions we're here to answer them.
