From the pastor…
We spent the 4th of July in Pigeon Forge, TN. It is one of
the few times in my life that I was anywhere but home on this
holiday. Each year Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg compete against
each other for the biggest bang at the Fourth.
For 40 years Gatlinburg has prided itself for having the first
4th of July Parade in the nation. At the stroke of midnight, when
July 3rd turns to July 4th, the parade starts. The parade route typically begins at traffic light #1a and then travels the length of
downtown to traffic light #10 at Ski Mountain Road. Over
100,000 people were expected to line the parade route in downtown Gatlinburg. People start setting up their spots as early as 6
AM on the 3rd.
The whole thing ends with a fireworks display that is second
to none, unless of course you are the people in Pigeon Forge.
They have the annual Pigeon Forge Patriot festival at Patriot Park
on the 4th. Vendors set up all around the large grassy area of the
park. A band stand is erected with music and activities starting at
noon. Local talent (which is really good) fills the afternoon with
the headliner band taking the stage after dark. This year it was
Diamond Rio. The whole thing ends with a fireworks display
which they think is better than the one in Gatlinburg.
By the way, they too anticipated 100,000 people.
Now I know you are thinking that Frances and I, along with
our daughter, son-in-law and three little grandkids, braved the
midnight streets of Gatlinburg at 12 AM and then rocked on the
grass before the bandstand in Patriot Park till 10 PM.
Wrong!
We were all snug as a bug in a rug in bed as the clock turned
midnight to start the Fourth. And on the evening of the Fourth as
the Pigeon Forge patriot Festival started to really rock we were
on the patio of the indoor swimming pool at Whispering Pine
Condos, directly across the highway up the mountain from the
park. We had a perfect view and could hear the music just fine.
The grandkids swam; Frances held the baby and I took a nap in
the cooling mountain air.
When the fireworks started we had a great view from the
balcony of our condo, then we put the worn out kids to bed.
It was a near perfect Fourth of July.
Though much has happened in our country of late that is of a
disturbing nature, I still thank God for America and celebrate our
heritage as the land of the free and the home of the brave. But
over 100,000 people on those narrow highways trying to get
there, find a place to eat and then leave all at the same time!
Never again!
There is no place like home.
