Dear Sunset Families and Friends,
It’s been a wonderful year of learning and growth for our Sunset Sockeyes and
we are indebted to the devoted efforts of hundreds of parent, family and community volunteers, Sunset PTA, Issaquah Schools Foundation, dedicated staff
and our supportive school district. With your assistance, Sunset Elementary
School had another stellar year of accomplishments. We started the school
year with a nice surprise as Sunset Elementary was named the Best Elementary
School by 425 Magazine readers. In addition, Sunset received a special 2012
Washington Achievement Award in Science by the Superintendent’s Office of
Public Instruction and State Board of Education, as well as a 2013 King County
Earth Heroes Award and a 2013 King County Green Schools Level 2 Award. A
beautiful, decorative wall surrounds our remodeled early childhood education
playground.
Our volunteers and Sunset PTA offer a comprehensive program of activities
and support. Thank you volunteers for your help in the classroom, on field
trips, with classroom parties, assisting students, art projects and many, many
more ways. Thank you Sunset PTA, for your help in funding school programs
such as the Reading Assistance Program, Science To Go, 5th Grade DARE, classroom libraries, classroom and grade level grants, library books, salmon tank,
student scholarships, author visits, Safety Patrol and Student Council.
Thanks also for these Sunset PTA projects: Back to School Dinner, Bus Greeters, Kindergarten Coffee and Kleenex, Picture Day, Fall and Spring Book Fairs,
Vision and Hearing Screening, Coat Drive, Eager Reader, Birthday Wall, Bingo
Night, Reflections, Spooky Spaghetti Night, Dads at Recess, Talent Show, Caring
Through Sharing, Skate Nights, Science Fair, Sock Hop, Multicultural Celebration, Art Walk, Staff Appreciation Week, parent education and the Sunset PTA
Auction.
Thank you Issaquah Schools Foundation for providing financial support for the
Issaquah School District’s elementary science curriculum, leveled book rooms
at every elementary school, academic enrichment grants (library and music
programs at Sunset), VOICE mentoring program (Sunset has one of the largest
VOICE programs in the district), materials and training for SAGE, National Board
Certification scholarships and many more ways.
Thank you Issaquah School District for your leadership, management, guidance
and support for a world-class education. Special thanks to Superintendent Dr.
Steve Rasmussen for his visionary leadership as he heads into retirement and
congratulations to incoming Superintendent Ron Thiele.
Thank you Sunset staff, for your caring, dedicated hard work, passion for students, positive support and love for the school. Its been a pleasure to work
with truly amazing educational professionals. We will sorely miss those who are
leaving Sunset and taking a new path in life. Mahalo nui loa! (thank you very
much!).

2013-2014 Confirmation or Your Child’s Enrollment
All students that will be attending Sunset for the 2013-2014 school year will need to verify enrollment August 1-7, 2013, by
logging on to Family Access. Enrollment Verification will be online, rather than lime green postcards which have been used in
the past. This new process will go much easier if you are pre-prepared with log-ins and passwords before you begin.
In August, reminder messages via Sunset E-News email and voice mail will be sent to families.
Step 1 Log on to Family Access. The first step in making a smooth transition is to make sure you are able to log on to Family
Access. For instructions on logging on to Family Access follow this link http://www.issaquah.wednet.edu/family/
FamilyAccess/Default.aspx. From here you will start your student’s verification process.
Step 2 Write down your child’s digital ID number. While on Family Access, make sure to write down your student’s seven
digit District Identification Number (to be used later in the verification process).
Step 3 Web payment site. You will be directed to the ISD web payment site where some grade levels have specific items set
up for purchase. To log in here you will need your Family Access username but your password here is your student’s last
name. Try logging in at this link https://web.issaquah.wednet.edu/touchbase/login-form.aspx.
Step 4 My Lunch Money. You will be asked to go to MyLunchMoney.com. To log on here you will need your student’s seven
digit District Identification Number (you can find on Family Access), student’s date of birth, school and grade.
Please take the time to try logging in to all these links before school is finished so that you are prepared for our new enrollment verification! Remember, Family Access is the only way that you find out your student’s teacher name. Watch
ENews for the date and time class assignments will be available on Family Access.
While we anticipate there will be an adjustment period as we all learn a new system, we are excited about the possibility of
streamlining the enrollment process for our families.

I-90 - West Lake Sammamish Parkway - Intersection Modification
Information provided by the Washington State Department of Transportation
The Washington State Department of Transported has
scheduled the building of a roundabout at the intersection
of the westbound I-90 on- and off-ramps and West Lake
Sammamish Parkway S.E. to reduce the risk of serious
collisions.

Why is WSDOT improving the I-90 W. Lake Sammamish
Parkway S.E. intersection?
The I-90 to West Lake Sammamish Parkway intersection
was the site of 41 collisions from 2006-2010, including one
fatal collision, 11 injury collisions, 14 rear-end incidents
and 13 involving drivers turning from the off-ramp on to
West Lake Sammamish Parkway (WLSP). The roundabout
will help reduce the risk of serious collisions at the intersection by controlling the flow of traffic near the on- and
off-ramps to WLSP and preventing traffic from backing up

The End Result
The new roundabout at West Lake Sammamish Parkway will help reduce the risk of serious collisions by controlling the flow
of traffic near the ramps and preventing traffic backups on westbound I-90.
Project Benefits
Given the nature of the I-90 WLSP intersection, the number of collisions that occur within or near the intersection and
increasing traffic volumes, a roundabout is an ideal solution for a few reasons:
 Roundabouts reduce the number and severity of collisions because people drive more slowly through a roundabout.
 With roundabouts, drivers can no longer run a red light or turn left in front of oncoming cars; two situations where
severe or fatal injuries are common.
 Roundabouts also help keep traffic moving because drivers only have to yield to others, not stop.
What is the project timeline?
 June 2013 Construction begins
 Winter 2013 Construction completed
