PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The HealthONE Emergency Medical Services Program has been in existence for more
than 40 years graduating thousands of students from initial EMT and Paramedic
programs and a wide variety of specialized courses. We also offer many opportunities
for continuing education though online courses, webinars and traditional classroom
experiences. Our Educators/Instructors and Coordinators represent a cross-section
of rural and urban experience levels. Our Medical Directors are a central part of the
program and active in activities ranging from classroom teaching, mentoring in
the clinical setting, providing insight and suggestions for materials and content to
performance and quality improvement for emergency services in the Denver area and
surrounding counties.
A more comprehensive look at the HealthONE services offered to prehospital and
healthcare providers include the following:
MEDICAL DIRECTION
Medical direction is a crucial element of the HealthONE EMS program. HealthONE
hospitals serve as base stations and resource hospitals for basic (BLS) and advanced
life support (ALS) agencies in the greater metropolitan area. The service region includes
agencies in the catchment areas of Adams, Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert, and Jefferson
counties.
The medical direction component includes a performance improvement (PI) program,
under the direct supervision of HealthONE EMS emergency physicians. Essentials of
the performance improvement program include formal review of clinical indicators,
patient follow-up, performance evaluation, protocol development and monitoring,
problem identification and resolution, and continuing education. Additionally,
EMS coordinators serve as liaisons between the hospital and field providers. The

EDUCATION PROGRAM | INITIAL AND CONTINUING EDUCATION
HealthONE EMS offers the largest and most comprehensive Emergency Medical
Services education program in Colorado. HealthONE EMS includes two campuses;
the Main Campus located in Englewood and the North Campus, located at North
Suburban Medical Center in Thornton. HealthONE EMS provides more than three
dozen types of education programs and a wide variety of EMS-related services.
While the majority of participants in the courses are prehospital providers, students
in the courses also include physicians, physician assistants, nurses and other health
professionals involved in emergency care. Course times and formats are structured to
meet the needs of participants with more than 120 scheduled classes offered annually.
HealthONE and Arapahoe Community College are partners in the education programs,
and many of the courses include college credit upon successful completion. Various
courses use either a web enhanced or hybrid online format. Affiliation agreements
are in place to provide students the opportunity to achieve either an Associate of
Applied Science or Bachelor’s degree. These are offered in conjunction with Arapahoe
Community College or CSU Global University.
Initial education programs are offered primarily at the Main campus; with continuing
education, IV, EKG and other specialty courses offered at both the Main and North
campuses. Periodically, courses are also scheduled in rural and outreach areas to meet
local need. Course schedules include day, evening, and weekend course offerings.

There is no doubt that EMS professionals can have a significant impact on
people’s lives. The EMS field is challenging on many levels. Every day is
different, requiring the ability to quickly adapt to new environments within a
variety of situations. Dedication, compassion, and accountability are essential
components to earn the privilege of helping people during what is often the
most vulnerable time in their lives.
EMS began in 1966 with the publication of “Accidental Death and Disability:
The Neglected Disease of Modern Society” by the National Academy of
Sciences, National Research Council. This document, termed the “White
Paper,” identified the need for an EMS system and suggested guidelines
for the development of these systems and for EMS education. Also in 1966
Congress passed the National Highway Safety Act, which established the US
Department of Transportation (DOT). As charged by the Highway Safety Act,
the DOT developed educational programs for the first Emergency Medical
Technician (EMT) course and pilot Advanced Life Support (ALS) course and
has continued to develop and improve EMS educational curricula. There
are three primary levels of EMT in Colorado: Emergency Medical Technician
(EMT), Advanced EMT (AEMT), and Paramedic. Within these levels are several
additional courses that may modify the provider’s level of practice.
The first step in an EMS career is to enroll in a cardiopulmonary resuscitation
(CPR) course. Passing a CPR course at the healthcare provider level is a prerequisite for the EMT course.
After you obtain your CPR completion card you are eligible to enroll in an
EMT program. This course is taught by a variety of hospitals and community
colleges in the State of Colorado. The minimum requirement for course
length is 110 hours. More comprehensive courses average over 250 hours in
classroom and skills practice. HealthONE offers a variety of class formats
and schedules from accelerated to part-time and even hybrid courses. Find a
class with a schedule that works with your current life situation. During the
EMT course you will be introduced to patient assessment techniques, airway
management skills, treatment of bleeding and shock, some pharmacology, and
basic approaches to the treatment for medical and trauma patients.
The EMS Career Path
Registration Information
· If you are not a resident of the state of Colorado, you may register for
the course, without receiving college credits. Please call our office for
details and information at (303) 788-6317.
The EMS Career Path
Although not required by the State of Colorado, some EMT programs, such
as HealthONE, offer clinical time in an emergency department and on an
ambulance. These clinical experiences offer the student the opportunity
to work in an acute care environment and to apply knowledge learned in
the classroom. Clinicals are an invaluable component of your educational
experience.

allowed to function under a medical director and within the scope of practice
which is established by the Emergency Medical and Trauma Services Branch
of the Colorado Department of Health and Environment, which is supervised
by local medical directors.
For more information on EMS as a career, visit the following websites:
www.cdphe.state.co.us/em/index.html
http://www.bls.gov/ooh/healthcare/emts-and-paramedics.htm
During your first year of employment as an EMT there are several classes
you should consider as you begin to gain experience. The IV Approval course
is 24 hours in length with clinical experiences offered to work with patients
in the emergency setting. Completion of this course prepares the EMT to
initiate intravenous (IV) fluids and monitor patients that have IVs in place.
This course is frequently required by agencies to apply for an EMT position.
It is recommended that you enroll upon completing the EMT program and
obtaining Colorado State certification.
The EMS Career Path
The EMS Career Path
Employment as an EMT is somewhat more available with private ambulance
companies. When paired with a Paramedic, you will have the opportunity
to run calls and transport patients while building upon the foundation you
received in your EMT course. Fire departments also employ EMTs, however
the hiring process is usually more competitive. Emergency departments often
employ EMTs but these positions offer experience that is different from field
care and may not prepare the EMT to meet the experience requirements for
paramedic programs.
Basic EKG courses are between 30 and 40 hours in length and introduce the
EMT to a fundamental understanding of cardiac arrhythmias. Both IV Therapy
and EKG courses are prerequisites for most paramedic programs.
In addition to Basic EKG and IV Approval courses, those interested in
continuing to the paramedic level should enroll in college level anatomy and
physiology (A&P) courses. While we recommend Biology 201 and 202, some
community colleges, such as Arapahoe Community College, also offer online
A&P courses. There are some abbreviated programs offered as substitutes
for Biology 201 and 202. Students should be cautious about enrolling in a
non-standardized course since it may not be recognized by other colleges,
paramedic programs, or count toward a later degree. The minimum entry
course requirement for the HealthONE Paramedic Program is Biology 106.
The EMT has a choice to proceed with EMS education. There are two levels
of advanced life support (ALS) education. The Advanced EMT course is
a minimum of 225 hours of classroom and lab with 175 hours of clinical
and field internship. The Advanced EMT course teaches advanced level
assessment and advanced treatment skills to include a number of emergency
medications.
The Paramedic course is a minimum of 1,100 hours and includes 450 hours
of classroom and lab, 150 hours in clinical areas and 500 hours of field
internship with a paramedic preceptor. In addition to the minimum number of
hours, specified numbers of patient assessments and ALS skills are required.
At this time the Paramedic is the primary provider of ALS services through a
911 emergency response system.
All levels of certification require continuing education and recertification with
the State of Colorado or the National Registry of EMTs. Providers are only

Advanced Medical Life Support
(AMLS)
The Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS) course is sponsored by the
National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) and is
endorsed by the National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP).This
course addresses the most common medical complaints and offers a “think
outside the box” method of assessing and managing a patient in medical
crisis. The course emphasizes using the scene size-up in conjunction with the
history and physical exam. This approach results in the provider being able
to systematically “rule-out” and “rule-in” possibilities, narrowing the focus
to the probabilities of the medical problem. This course teaches assessmentbased approach and progresses to a diagnostic-based approach to patient
care. Participants apply critical thinking skills to integrate pathophysiology and
assessment findings to determine appropriate treatment intervention(s).
Prerequisites: C
ertificate of completion for specific online course,
i.e., CPR, ACLS, PALS. After registration is received, the
coordinator will contact the student to arrange for a specific
time for testing.
Tuition:
BLS $40; ACLS or PALS $65; or all three for $150.00
Text:None required, however the most current edition of texts
for BLS for Healthcare Providers, ACLS and PALS are highly
recommended. All three are available at the Arapahoe

Crisis intervention is sometimes called “emotional first-aid.” Crisis
interventions are typically done individually (one-on-one) or in groups. The
Assisting Individuals in Crisis program is designed to teach participants
the fundamentals of individual intervention. The audience for this class
includes emergency services, healthcare, school personnel, industrial peer
support personnel, and mental health professionals who desire to increase
their knowledge of individual (one-on-one) crisis intervention techniques.
The Group Crisis Intervention training program is designed to present core
elements of a comprehensive, systematic, and multi-component crisis
intervention curriculum. The Group Crisis Intervention course prepares
participants to understand a wide range of crisis services including crisis
management, briefing, small group defusing, and Critical Incident Stress
Debriefing (CISD). The need for follow-up services and referrals when
necessary is also described. This unique combination course is an intensive
crisis intervention training experience. Participants must attend all three days
for successful course completion. This course meets the requirements of the
International Critical Incident Stress Foundation.

Critical Incident Stress Management - CISM
Strategic Response to Crisis
In the course of nearly everyone’s life, they will, at some time, encounter
people grieving the loss of a loved one from a traumatic event. This course
is designed to help both lay people and professionals identify characteristics
of trauma and traumatic events, the normalcy of traumatic grief reactions,
learn death notification and body identification techniques, become skilled
at identifying warning signs of complications, and learn the importance of
early interventions and support utilizing the SAFER-R model. Participants will
increase their knowledge of how trauma impacts the grief process and will gain
skills for evaluating and supporting persons who have experienced traumatic
loss. Upon completion, participants will be able to: identify types of traumatic
events and the characteristics of trauma and grief; describe normal responses
to trauma and normal grief responses; describe factors that may complicate
the traumatic grief process; learn practical and effective methods of death
notification and preparation for body identification; identify the primary needs
of people experiencing grief following trauma; and outline techniques for
supporting people grieving a trauma and for self-care.
Knowledge of the sequence of crisis intervention processes and the
appropriate use for individuals or groups is crucial to all effective early
intervention programs. This course will present essential information for the
assessment of both crisis situations and the effects of critical incidents on
individuals involved in those situations. Participants will learn to create an
effective plan of action to assist those in crisis. Strategic planning and tactical
decision-making, and the rationale for choosing one set of crisis intervention
processes over another are emphasized. Participants will complete a series
of exercises designed to sharpen their assessment and crisis planning skills.
This course builds confidence that crisis interventionists will make the right
choice of interventions for the populations they are assisting under special
circumstances. This training meets the requirements of the International
Critical Incident Stress Foundation.
