From our Principal...
This might be one of the quickest school years on record. It literally feels
like last month we were welcoming our newest Lions, and now it’s time to
do that again! Part of what makes our year fly by are the many activities
and endeavors upon which we embark…we measure the year by athletic
seasons and grading periods, celebrating the highlights as we go.
Liberty has had a highly successful year, academically, athletically, and community-wise. Our scholars made us proud, made us laugh, and sometimes
made us cry in a mixture of tears of joy, mirth, and angst. We wouldn’t
have it any other way as we honor who they are right now while helping
them prepare for the people they will become.
We can’t do it alone, so want to thank you for not only sharing your children with us but also for your support throughout the year. We have
always had an active parent support group, and it has allowed us to provide
opportunities for our scholars we wouldn’t be able to provide otherwise. Those include our Book Fairs, the Spirit Shack and spirit wear, Staff
Appreciation, and assistance with March Madness and the Paw Party. For
the first time, we don’t have a full PTO Board for next year, and wonder if
it’s because people fear the commitment to a year-long “office.” There are
many ways in which parents can support the Liberty learning community,
and we hope you’ll consider getting involved in some fashion. We’d love to
have people assist for just one project if that’s what you can do… we know
everyone is busy, so appreciate you considering it.

Liberty will have 6th grade orientation on August 27, 2:30-5:00 p.m.
Also, on August 28th, 7th and 8th graders
can come and pick up their schedules from 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Cross Country
Practice begins August 18th – 1st week 9:00-10:45 a.m. M-F
and rest of the season 2:45-4:45 M-F. For more info, please

Practice begins August 18th – 1st two weeks 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Liberty Middle School PTO
In order to keep the Spirit Shack open next year for the kids,
we are seeking several individuals to help us foster Liberty spirit.
We need an advertiser (at-home position),
a decorator and a "fun" organizer.
These positions DO NOT require attending monthly meetings.
We are also looking for someone creative to come up with
2 or 3 "Class of 2019" t-shirt designs over the summer, with the
8th graders voting on their favorite when school starts. (Traditionally,
these shirts have been sold at the end of the year, but we thought
the 8th graders might like to have the opportunity to wear them all year.)

The STASHA (Strong Teens
Against Substance Hazards &
Abuse) Peer Education
Program is actively recruiting
middle and high school
students in Clark County.
Our mission is to help
prevent substance abuse and
encourage Clark County
youth to make healthy
decisions through nonjudgmental youth-to-youth
advice and/or suggestions.
This group is comprised of
youth who have never used
drugs and alcohol, youth with
past experimentation/use,
and youth who have
completed treatment and are
now in recovery. If you are
interested in becoming a
peer educator, please see

Special Olympics
Swimming!
4 students participated in the Special Olympics
Swimming Meet last weekend.
Brian Andrade earned a silver medal in the 25 meter
freestyle, a bronze medal in the 25 meter backstroke,
and placed 5th in the 50 meter freestyle.
Destiny Laycock earned a gold medal in 15 meter
freestyle, a gold medal in 15 meter backstroke, and
participation ribbon in 25 meter freestyle.
Paris Laycock earned participation ribbons in
25 meter freestyle and 25 meter backstroke.
Harlan Laycock earned a gold medal in 25 meter
freestyle and a gold medal in 15 meter freestyle.

Robotics Classes
Shine at Olympia
Invitational
Tournament!
Three Camas Schools Compete in Robotics Invite!
Design, build and program a robot “dragster” to race down a narrow lane and accurately stop when it
“sees” the finish line??! What kind of impossible challenge is that? One that the Robotics students of
Camas High, Hayes Freedom High and Liberty MS gladly accepted! The students competed with their
Dragsters, SumoBots and Line Racers at the Fifth Annual South Sound STEM Robotics Invite in
Olympia last Monday.. This was the first time for any of the Camas schools to attend, and it was
amazing! Lots of learning, teamwork and wins! Out of 10 high school teams competing, Camas
students took home many of the awards! The top 2 finishers of each event were awarded a plaque:
Dragster, 1st: Alex Wolfe (driver) – CHS
Dragster, 2nd: Austin Schmunk, Tyler Allen – Hayes Freedom
Line Racer, 1st: Ian Pinch, Roberto Palma, Nathaniel Maszak – Liberty
Line Racer, 2nd: Michael Boyle, Nathan Chilian (builders), Lacy Dunlop (driver) - CHS
SumoBot, 1st: Kris Cocks, Ryan Wessel – CHS
The high school with the best overall team score was CHS, and was awarded a plaque as well!
Hayes Freedom placed 5th overall and Liberty placed 6th overall.
In addition to the students above, other students helping generate the high team scores and
standings at the tournament, were:

MANY THANKS to coaches Ron Wright, Kelly Williams, and Skyler Gillispie for their awesome leadership and continual encouragement! Helping us to “embrace the confusion” as we learned how the
tourney worked were seniors Robbie Bruce and Jon Ausherman. And finally, especially, many thanks
to the many CSD students who helped push these students to excel, but who couldn’t attend –
82 students in 4 classrooms at Liberty, Hayes Freedom, and Camas.

Sports Mural Painted
By Students!
The sports mural was designed by Art
Teacher Erin Marcell. It represents each
of the sports offered here at Liberty
(Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Cross
Country, Track, and Wrestling). The
students and Mrs. Marcell worked on it
for 2 months 2 days a week for an hour
each day. Participants were Darian
Holmes, Camille Madrigal, Marilyn Gable,
Brooke Halcumb, & Grace Janku.

ATTENTION
PARENTS:
Immunization Requirements for 6th Graders!
Washington State law requires that all children attending 6th grade
(11 years and older) must show proof of Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and
pertussis) vaccination before the first day of school. Please update your
child’s Certificate of Immunization Status (CIS) form at school with the
date your child received their Tdap vaccine.
Attention Parents/Guardians!
We are making plans to close out the school year. If your child has
medication at school please plan to pick-up their medication no later
than 10am on the last day of school! Any medication left in the health
room after June 19th will be destroyed unless you have made arrangements with health room staff. This includes pills, Epi-Pens, Inhalers, and
diabetic supplies.
2014-2015 - If your child needs medication during school hours for next
school year, please have your physician fill out a new medication in
school authorization form. These forms are only good for the current
school year and expire every June. Please bring the medication and
completed order to school in the original container prior to the first day
of school!
Student Health Inventories
Watch out for the Student Health Inventory form which will be sent
home in the mail prior to school starting. These forms are required by
parents/guardians to be filled out annually and are very valuable in
helping us prepare for health emergencies at school. Please contact the
school nurse if you have any questions.
