DiscoverWhat Makes Us Different
Since 1797, Henderson, Kentucky, located on the banks
of the beautiful Ohio River, has provided commerce and
inspired two renowned artists.
Naturalist John James Audubon and blues musician
W.C. Handy once called Henderson home. Audubon
spent time here in the 1800s studying the birds that
travel through this area on their migratory routes.
Handy, also known as the “Father of the Blues”, wrote
that his time spent in Henderson greatly impacted the
music he would later write.

At the end of the 19th century, Henderson held a unique
place in history due to the export business of dark tobacco.
Worldwide shipping from Henderson’s river port resulted
in Henderson becoming the richest community per capita
in the United States during tobacco’s heyday. This led to
the construction of many of the beautiful homes and
buildings still standing in the historic downtown district.
This charming town is now known best for its friendly
people, incredible bird-watching opportunities, rich
music heritage and delicious barbecue.
Whether you’re interested in the great outdoors, the arts
or shopping – there’s so much to do you’ll need more
than a day to explore the area. Escape to Henderson and
discover what makes us different.

HISTORIC DOWNTOWN WALKING TOUR
Henderson’s unique place
in world trade at the close
of the 19th century, largely
due to the tremendous dark
tobacco exporting business
located here, provided the
setting for the construction
of a rather surprising number
of expensive homes, given
the size of the community.
In addition to grand homes,
structures include city buildings, the library, banks and
downtown businesses. The
properties on this walking
tour were chosen because of some unusual or special
feature of architectural charm or for their historic value.
They represent pre-Civil War architecture featuring
the Italianate, built around the 1860’s and 1870’s; and
the fancier asymmetric Victorian, built at the close of
the century.
CIVIL WAR DRIVING TOUR
The Ohio River Civil War Heritage Corridor encompasses
the six Kentucky counties that border Illinois and the
Ohio River. The sites on this tour are viewed by way of a
driving tour and several additional walking tour stops.
Enjoy some of the lesser known, but significant events
that shaped the lives of Kentuckians during the Civil War
on this self-guided tour.
Maps and brochures for these tours are available at
the Henderson County Tourist Commission, located
at 101 N. Water Street. Call 1-800-648-3128
