Abel FERRARA
Abel FERRARA will be the guest of the 37 th American
Deauville Film Festival
Born in the Bronx in 1951, Abel Ferrara started shooting in Super 8 when he was a teenager, filming
the streets of New York, especially the tougher neighborhoods. His debut on the big screen was in
1979 with “The Driller Killer”. In this film Ferrara is also the protagonist, a young painter from New
York who becomes crazy and violent. In 1981, Ferrara created the character of a young blind woman
who decides to take revenge on her aggressors after they rape her in “MS.45”. In “ China Girl”
(1987), Ferrara tells the story of an impossible love that takes place amongst ethnic conflicts
between different gangs in Manhattan.
Throughout the years, Abel Ferrara has created an image of himself as a truly American auteur with a
pessimistic vision of his country. Towards the end of the 1980’s, Ferrara directed various episodes of
“Miami Vice” and two other films for television: “The Gladiator” and “Crime Story”. In 1990, he
jumped into the international spotlight with his bloody thriller, « King of New York”, interpreted
magically by Christopher Walken, who plays a drug lord. “The Bad Lieutenant”, with Harvey Keitel as
a corrupt police officer looking for redemption, and “Body Snatchers”, a paranoid remake of the
science fiction film “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” directed by Don Siegel. In 1985, « The
Addiction », a film shot in black and white about vampires, with Christopher Walken, Lili Taylor and
Annabella Sciorra, won the top award at the Sundance Film Festival. The next year, « The Funeral »,
with Christopher Walken, Chris Penn, Isabella Rossellini, Vincent Gallo, and Benicio Del Toro, took the
public into the world of a violent and oppressive mafia family. In 1998, Ferrara once again directed
Christopher Walken in « New Rose Hotel », a psychological thriller including cast members Asia
Argento and Willem Dafoe. In 2001, “’R Xmas” was shot, telling the story of a Christmas spent with
immigrants transporting drugs.
For “Mary”, in 2005, Ferrara once again put together a stellar cast, remaining true to themes that
have always characterized him as a director. This film won the Grand Special Jury Prize at the Venice
Film Festival. His latest film “Go Go Tales” was selected at the Cannes Film Festival.

A preview of the best television series, the crossroad of cinema and television through
those who hold the pen
After David Chase (creator of the Sopranos) and Clyde Phillips (showrunner of the first four

several communities of Oswald’s prison. Broadcast by HBO, the six seasons (1997 to 2003)
have been acclaimed worldwide and have underlined an important evolution in the
television series productions. He has been awarded many times for his work, including 3
Emmy Awards.
Besides his numerous creations for television, Tom Fontana continues teaching and has
written and directed several plays.

glove for over two decades.
FRANCO-AMERICAN MEETING: PARTNERS IN CRIME
For almost two decades, television series have entered a new dimension and the artistic
ambition of their creators has been constantly pushing its limits.
“Writing in question” promotes dialogue between French and American screenwriters about
television series writing. For this second edition, the meeting will focus on the writing of
crime fiction, and on how screenwriters both sides of the Atlantic have managed to reinvent
this legendary genre. Also to be addressed is the question of the new outline of this
successful genre, between creation and adaptation, tribute and pastiche. As well as the
specificities of both cultures and the fruitful interaction between the two media.
SHAWN RYAN, GRAHAM YOST, HERVÉ HADMAR and ANNE LANDOIS will attend the
meeting.
It will be led by STÉPHANE FOENKINOS.
34

feature films scripts, Hadmar wrote and directed several TV series: Les Oubliées (2006)
starring Jacques Gamblin for France Télévisions. Pigalle, la nuit (2008) for Canal + and
Signature (2010) starring Sami Bouajila and Sandrine Bonnaire for France Télévisions.
Hadmar is currently working on his second feature film, The Silence of the Moon, and is
developing two new TV series.

starring Richard Bohringer (TF1, 1998), Vérité oblige starring André Dussollier (TF1, 2000)
and Duelles (M6, 2001). Deeply involved in the writing of the TV collection Verdicts and
Vertiges for M6, she contributed in the creation of the first two seasons of the TV series
Septième Ciel (RTBF, 2004-2006). After having built the synopsis frameworks and written
several episodes of the third season of Engrenages, she is currently working with Eric de
Barahir on the synopsis framework of the fourth season.
SHAWN RYAN
Shawn Ryan earned a joint degree in Economics and Theatre and began his career as a
playwright before segueing into television writing. His early television credits include Angel,
Nash Bridges and Life with Louie. Ryan is the creator and executive producer of the series

CBS and Terriers for FX. He is currently writing a feature film for director, writer and

NEW HOLLYWOOD
This 37th edition wishes to honour the future by inviting an actress and an actor among the
finest in tomorrow’s American cinema. New Hollywood is a prize that salutes the talent,
passion and commitment of actors and actresses on the path of creation. Showing
appreciation for these emerging talents, the faces of tomorrow’s cinema, is in line with the
Festival’s ambition.
The first NEW HOLLYWOOD prizes will be awarded to:

“ TAKE SHELTER ”
Jessica Chastain was born under a lucky star from the galaxy of cinema. From her first film
JOLENE, by Dan Ireland, her performance was praised by the critics and she received the
Seattle Film Festival Award for Best Actress. Her work since then has attested how sensitive
and photogenic an actress she is. John Madden entrusted her with the difficult task of
sharing a character with Dame Helen Mirren. Her subtle performances and unique presence
allow her to play in both independent productions and Hollywood films.
The last Cannes Film Festival has established her international aura by awarding the 2011
Palme d’Or to THE TREE OF LIFE by Terrence Malick, a director known for his extremely
demanding ways and legendary castings, and who confirms, by choosing Jessica Chastain for
the film, that she is indeed the rising star of Hollywood.

Cassavetes revealed his potential for romance in THE NOTEBOOK. Ryan Fleck offered him his
first nomination for the Best Actor Academy Award with HALF NELSON (Jury Prize and
Cartier Revelation Award in Deauville in 2006), unanimously praised in Hollywood. BLUE

CARTE BLANCHE
For the first time, the Festival will give a Carte blanche to a renowned figure of the artistic
and literary world who will reveal and share, through a personal selection, his or her
favourite films, his or her own private America.
The Festival is pleased to give the first “Carte blanche” to French designer:
JEAN-CHARLES DE CASTELBAJAC
©Etienne Clément
“For a very long time, American cinema has been one of the cornerstones of my imagination.
Conquest, desire, power, mystery and fear, “immoderate emotion” is what connects me to it.
Masterpieces result from bravery and difference, they convey the same experimental and
ground-breaking dimension.
American cinema is immortal, just like the ghosts it projects into the future.”
Jean-Charles de Castelbajac
Jean-Charles de Castelbajac is a legendary French designer, as much for his designs as for his
polymorphic pieces. Within a sparkling, colorful and playful world, he is a sprawling artist
that revolutionized fashion and art planet, by his hijacking, his appropriation and approach
of an innovative dimension of pop / rock culture.
Hijacked materials pieces of clothing, famous down-filled or postcard jackets, ponchos for
two, slipping by canvas and graffiti dresses to cartoon pull-over, each designed piece are
bringing a unique and evident universe.
As a multi-purpose artist with fashion as a favorite medium, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac was
early recognized by the press with his first cover of ELLE magazine and highlights of WWD
41
which named his talent as “a Courrege of the 70’s”. One decade later, symbolic
collaborations with Loulou Picasso, Ben, Gérard Garouste, Hervé Di Rosa…as well as
conclusive encounters with Keith Haring or Jean-Michel Basquiat gave him a consensual
dimension.
Since 1997, when Pope Jean-Paul II told him that he used colors as cement of faith, following
liturgical clothes and outfits designs for a million of youths during World Youth Day, world
famous music artists have then followed him: Madonna, Kanye West, Lady Gaga, Beth Dito,
Katy Perry…He has also been consecrated designer of the young generation by Hip Hop
culture when renamed “JC/DC”.
During the 2000’s success came knocking at each collection and Jean-Charles de Castelbajac
launched his genius idea, inventing concept of “Lowcost Luxury”, great design for reasonable
price, targeting a massive and aware crowd. The result was a second line known as “JC/DC
by JC de Castelbajac” under his war name.

FILM CORNER
A space for buyers and sellers to discover and (re)consider the best of today’s American
film production
Willing as ever to be a helpful and effective event to professionals, the Deauville American
Film Festival is this year launching a FILM CORNER whose goal is to facilitate the purchase of
American films which are worth discovering or rediscovering.
A part of the selection for this 37th edition, as well as a certain number of films whose rights
in France are still available will be shown within this professional space which is solely
dedicated to film buyers and sellers.
The Festival doesn’t wish to become a “market” but rather a cultural space where acquiring
films is part of the artistic economy.
For this venture, the Deauville American Film Festival is teaming up with LVT and
Cinando.com, which after the festival will present again all or part of the selection to all
members of the platform.
