SOLOMON SCHECHTER OF NORTH JERSEY
George and Arline Haar Middle School
Mission Statement
We provide a superior secular and Judaic education
by challenging each of our students with innovative and
enriched learning opportunities in a warm, nurturing
community. We instill and foster Jewish identity and a
commitment to our local community and to Israel through
the integration of Jewish values, traditions, and the
Hebrew language. Our students graduate with the
academic skills and strength of character enabling them to
excel in higher education and to become responsible
citizens and future leaders.
A Message from
Rabbi Ellen Bernhardt
Head of School
Dear Gerrard Berman Day School Families, Faculty, Staff, Friends, Jewish
Federation, and Supporters,
This evening we gather to celebrate Israel’s 65th birthday. Our guest speaker
Professor Stephen Berk, grandparent of Molly and Sam Terdiman, GBDS students, will
enlighten us with his expertise concerning Israel. We will be honoring Shana and Mark
Siegel who have selflessly dedicated their time, energy, and resources to our school for so
many years. We are also proud to honor faculty and staff members who have reached
milestone anniversaries in their extraordinary service to GBDS.
We celebrate the Gerrard Berman Day School, Solomon Schechter of North Jersey,
a place for Jewish children and the hub of the Jewish community in our area. We join
together on behalf of the children and, in the process, we become an extended family.
Our honorees and our guest speaker personify the values of home and family.
We must remember and honor as well our fabulous volunteers! We owe a huge
debt of gratitude to Lee Ann Beck, Leah Matsil and Howie Greenberg for putting together
the Ad Journal, and to Amy Shafron, Director of Development, for her indispensable help.
We also thank all of the supporters of the Gerrard Berman Day School for enabling this
wonderful school to give to the families of our community.
We take this opportunity to honor the following members of our GBDS family:
Shana and Mark Siegel – Honorees
Joan and Dan Silna and Natalie and Gary Haar – Co-chairs
Etty Vaknin – 20 years of service
Elisa Berger – 15 years of service
Dassi Rosenkrantz-Cabo – 10 years of service
Liza Mandel, Luiza Nahomove, and Joan Beck Sadow – 5 years of service
On a personal note, it has been my privilege to serve as the Head of School of this
very special school for nine years. Leaving this professional role is very difficult, as I love
doing this holy work; I move on to spend more time nurturing my own family. I thank you
for entrusting me with these precious Jewish souls.
Now families….let’s have fun, eat, and learn!!!
B’Shalom,
Rabbi Ellen Bernhardt
Head of School
A Message from
Barry Blecherman
President, Board of Trustees
Dear GBDS Families, Faculty, Staff and Friends:
Our school is blessed by your unwavering support, your incredible effort, your
immeasurable time, and your steadfast love. Each and every day we harvest the output
of this dedication and our children’s lives are visibly richer as a result. But it is not
every day when we can all stop for a moment, relax, and celebrate. I am so pleased to
have this opportunity to write to you and let you all know how much I value you.
In addition to the “normal” (in this case “normal” means “super”) level of spirit and
devotion each member of our community brings forth there are some individuals who
deserve special thanks this year. Our honorees, Shana and Mark Siegel, have given so
much to our community over the years and are truly deserving of this recognition. The
co-chairs of the evening’s festivities, Joan and Dan Silna and Natalie and Gary Haar,
have been generous in every sense of the word. We honor teachers and staff for their
years of dedication: Etty Vaknin for 20 years, Elisa Berger for 15, Dassi RosenkrantzCabo for 10 and Liza Mandel, Luiza Nahomove and Joan Beck Sadow for 5. And I want
to convey a special “thank-you” in advance to Professor Berk for what will certainly be
a captivating evening of learning.
Finally, tonight’s fun would never have happened without the inspirational efforts of
Lee Ann Beck, Howie Greenberg, Leah Matsil, Rabbi Ellen Bernhardt, and Amy Shafron.
I witnessed first-hand what you all did to make this celebration happen and cannot
possibly express my gratitude sufficiently.
I will stop now (always difficult for a professor to do) because it is time to enjoy the
evening!
Best of regards,
Professor Barry Blecherman
President, GBDS Board of Trustees
Our Honorees and Speaker
Shana and Mark Siegel
have been an integral part of the Gerrard Berman Day School family for more than ten
years and have sent all three of their children to GBDS. Shana served as PTO President for
two years before joining the Board of Trustees. Shana served as President of the Board
from 2010-2012, where she remains an active member. Shana also serves on the boards
of Temple Israel and Jewish Education for Future Generations. Shana, a partner at
WanderPolo & Siegel, brings her legal expertise to serve the community as a member of
the Board of Jewish Family Service of North Jersey and the Federation Jewish Council for
Special Needs.
One cannot attend an event at GBDS without seeing Mark Siegel serving as the resident
photographer. Mark is active on the GBDS technology committee, assists with the school
website and prepares the program for the school's annual show. Mark is Associate
Director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Hackensack University Medical Center.
Professor Stephen M. Berk
is the Henry and Sally Schaffer Professor of Holocaust and Jewish Studies at Union
College in Schenectady, NY. He is the former Chair of the Department of History, Director
of the Program in Russian and Eastern European Studies, and Faculty Advisor to the
Jewish Student Organization. Professor Berk has consulted to the Wiesenthal Holocaust
Center in LA, and made a number of DVDs dealing with Jewish history, as well as
published books and articles on Russian and Jewish history, anti-Semitism, and the Middle
East. He has lectured throughout the United States and Canada including such
distinguished colleges and universities as Princeton, Vanderbilt, The University of Texas at
Austin, and Williams College. Professor Berk is frequently consulted by newspaper
reporters and by television and radio stations including the BBC.
In 1996, Professor Berk received the prestigious Holocaust Memorial Award from the
Holocaust Survivors and Friends Education Center. In 2010, Professor Berk was designated
an Israel Hero for his defense and advocacy of the State of Israel by JERNEY, the Jewish
Education Resources of New York. Professor Berk also leads Jewish Heritage trips to
Europe, Asia and the Middle East. His astounding knowledge and emotional
connectedness create lectures that are meaningful and memorable experiences for all
attendees. Two of Professor Berk’s grandchildren attend the Gerrard Berman Day School.
Teacher and Faculty Honorees
20 YEARS
Etty Vaknin is celebrating 20 years of teaching at The Gerrard Berman Day School,
Solomon Schechter of North Jersey . Etty received her degree in Israel in 1987 and
began her career teaching elementary school students in Tiberius. After moving with her
family to America, she accepted a position teaching Hebrew and Judaic Studies at
GBDS. Though she intended to stay only one year, her love for the school has caused her
to remain until this day! GBDS is her second home. Etty considers her students, past and
present, a part of her family, which also includes sons Roy and Marom, daughter Tal
(currently a sixth grader at GBDS), and husband Mati. She plans to continue in her
profession for as long as she can, because teaching Torah and Israel brings her great
happiness. Etty has also logged 20 years teaching at Nitzanim Israeli School in Fair Lawn
and 13 years at Congregation Shomrei Torah in Wayne.
15 YEARS
Elisa Berger began working at The Gerrard Berman Day School in 1998 after having
graduated William Paterson University with degrees in N-8 Elementary Education and
Sociology. Over the past 15 years she has brought her constancy and ingenuity into
the Nursery and Pre-Kindergarten classrooms. Elisa relishes the abundant opportunities
to engage children as they thrive and mature. She takes special pride and joy in instilling
in her students Jewish values and a love of Judaism. GBDS is a second family and home
for Elisa, her husband Ilan, and Brielle and Brandon who are kindergarteners at GBDS.
"Our children are becoming real Jewish mensches thanks to all the phenomenal
teachers in the Early Childhood," Elisa says. Formerly a Hebrew School teacher at
Congregation Shomrei Torah in Wayne for nine years, Elisa is currently in her fifth
year teaching at Pine Brook Jewish Center in Montville.
10 YEARS
Dassi Rosenkrantz-Cabo has worked for many years as a bass player, arranger,
producer, composer and music director with numerous musicians in Israel and the US.
She has recorded and toured with artists from many genres of music, among them the
renowned late Jewish singer–songwriter Debbie Friedman. Dassi has performed in many
prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall and NJPAC, and has also contributed original music
for movies and TV shows. Dassi received her MA in studio production from SUNY Purchase
and completed the many education credits needed to receive her music teacher
certification. Over the past 10 years, in addition to working at The Gerrard Berman Day
School, she has been teaching Jewish music in Sunday schools and at Ramah Day
Camp of Nyack. Dassi lives in Beacon, NY, with her children Noga, Adam, and Zohar (all
students at the Gerrard Berman Day School ), and her husband Richie Cabo. They are
all very involved there in educating children about organic living and sustainability.
Teacher and Faculty Honorees
5 YEARS
Liza Mandel initially joined the Gerrard Berman Day School teaching staff back in 2004,
shortly after receiving her Master’s in Teaching from Montclair State University . She
taught first grade for two years before returning to graduate school for a degree in
Special Education. After receiving that degree at William Paterson University , she
taught for two years in public school and returned to GBDS in 2010. In 2011, Liza was
given the task of establishing the school’s fledgling Gesher Program. Currently, Liza is
serving as GBDS’ special education teacher working with students in second, fifth, sixth,
and seventh grade. She is also working on her second master’s degree to become a
licensed social worker. In her spare time, Liza is a national sorority advisor at Kean
University, a dedicated aunt to five nieces and nephews, and mom to three dogs. She
also tries never to miss a Bon Jovi concert!
Luiza Nahomove is much beloved at The Gerrard Berman Day School. She received her
Early Childhood Education degree from Brooklyn College where she concentrated in
Psychology. Luiza, who is also certified in Elementary Education, accompanies Fair Lawn
students on the bus to and from Oakland. She works with our 2 year olds each morning playing piano for them is one of her joys - and assists in the first grade classroom in the
afternoons. In addition to her important job at GBDS, Luiza has been teaching Hebrew
School for 8 years at Bris Avraham in Fair Lawn. Born in Russia, Luiza came to the United
States in her early teens. With husband Assaf, she is raising 3 beautiful daughters:
Rozallyn, Nicole, and Eliana, all of whom attend The Gerrard Berman Day School.
Joan Beck Sadow joined the GBDS staff in the dual role of Business Manager and
Personnel Director during the 2008-09 school year. A graduate of Smith College , Joan
earned her degree in Chemistry. Before GBDS, Joan’s career spanned many fields
including cancer research, plastics research, computer programming, accounting, and
bookkeeping. She published several scientific articles during her time as a cancer
researcher. A dedicated single mother, Joan raised two Ivy League-educated children
while simultaneously acting as her mother’s caretaker. During those years Joan held
leadership positions with both the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts and worked part-time
running a successful small business painting yarmulkes and making jewelry. Currently in
her spare time Joan tutors high school and college students and has become a college
admissions and financial aid advisor.

To the entire school family, thank you for sharing your wonderful children with us.
Rabbi Ellen and Steve Bernhardt
Eleven years ago we walked through the doors of GBDS
in search of a school for our three young children.
Instead we found a home.
Joseph, Jacob and Jessica have certainly grown since that time,
having transformed into confident, young adults.
GBDS has been with us through every milestone, celebration,
challenge and triumph.
We are so proud of Joseph, Jacob and Jessica and so thankful to the
administration and faculty of GBDS for helping us raise and educate them.
Thank you to the faculty who work so hard every day to make
GBDS a special place.
Our community is so lucky to have you.
Good luck to our wonderful leader and friend, Ellen Bernhardt,
as she begins a well deserved retirement.
Thank you to Dr. Berk for once again sharing your knowledge.
Thank you to Amy Shafron and the committee who worked so hard to put this lovely
evening and the Ad Journal together.
