David Bailey (b. 1938) Born in London, Bailey is widely acknowledged as one of the founding fathers of
contemporary photography, having shot some of the most iconic portraits of the last five decades. He has
continued to document leading figures of the cultural zeitgeist, including, among many others, the Rolling
Stones, the Beatles, Andy Warhol, gangsters Ronnie and Reggie Kray, Mickey Rourke and Kate Moss. Bailey’s
early work helped both define and capture the atmosphere of fashionable 1960s London, when he made
stars of a new generation of models, including Jean Shrimpton and Penelope Tree. Bailey channeled the
energy of London’s newly informal street culture into his work, and created a new style of casual coolness.
Drawing inspiration from Modernism, Bailey injected a sense of movement and immediacy into his work
by using a very direct, cropped perspective. Bailey’s interests are varied and extend beyond photography to
commercials, film, painting and sculpture.
Peter Beard (b. 1938) is a photographer, artist and writer best known for his expansive African-themed
art. In 1972, he was travelling with and shooting The Rolling Stones on their infamous American tour to
promote Exile on Main St. An intimate of the rich and famous, Beard was married to model Cheryl Tiegs and
a close friend of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Truman Capote and Andy Warhol. He is the author and subject
of several books including The End of the Game (1965), Eyelids of Morning (1973), Peter Beard: Fifty Years
of Portraits (1999), Peter Beard (TASCHEN 2006) and the new edition Peter Beard (TASCHEN 2013).
Willie Christie (b. 1948) is a well-connected photographer and filmmaker from an aristocratic British
family. Prior to his photographic career, he worked aboard the yacht belonging to Richard Burton and
Elizabeth Taylor. In the early 1970s, he was married to Grace Coddington, a former model and influential
creative director of US Vogue. In 1969, in one of his first photographic assignments, Christie photographed
The Rolling Stones rehearsing for their famous concert in Hyde Park with new band member Mick Taylor.
Anton Corbijn (b. 1955) Dutch photographer, videographer and film director is perhaps best known for
his seminal work with rock bands, having created music videos, album covers and sleeve photography for
hundreds of artists including, amongst others, Joy Division, Depeche Mode, U2, Nirvana, and The Rolling
Stones. His photographs, usually black-and-white, often resemble stills from motion pictures. In 2010,
Corbijn’s portraits of people from the worlds of music, art, and fashion were assembled in an exhibition and
a book entitled Inwards and Outwards. Corbijn now lives in The Hague, but resided in London for 30 years.
Walton Ford (b. 1960) graduated in filmmaking from Rhode Island School of Design, but switched to
large-scale watercolor painting. His remarkable and monumental animal themed illustrations have been
widely exhibited, including shows at the Whitney and Brooklyn museums, and are highly sought after by
private collectors. He lives and works in New York City. TASCHEN has published three editions of his largeformat monograph Pancha Tantra. In 2012 he was commissioned by The Rolling Stones to create artwork
for their 50th anniversary greatest hits record Grrr.
Michael Joseph (b. 1941) grew up in South Africa, where his father was a leader in the Anti-Apartheid
Movement. While a student at the London College of Printing, he travelled to Vietnam to take photographs.
After college, Joseph became a successful advertising photographer and conducted the two-day shoot for
The Rolling Stones’ Beggars Banquet album in 1968. Shot at Sarum Chase and Swarkestone, those scenes
of gluttony featured a cat, three dogs, a sheep, and a goat, as well as the five band members.

Gered Mankowitz (b. 1946) Born in London, Mankowitz became the official photographer for The Rolling
Stones in the mid-1960s. During that time, Mankowitz documented not only the band’s rise to stardom, as
they performed and recorded, but also created covers for albums such as Out of Our Heads and the iconic
Between the Buttons. Mankowitz has published several books of photographs of The Rolling Stones, Jimi
Hendrix and other rock legends.
Jean-Marie Périer (b. 1940) is a French photographer and filmmaker. In 1956, he was hired as an
assistant to photographer Daniel Filipacchi who worked for Marie Claire, Paris Match and Jazz. He began
his career photographing jazz greats such as Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald and Dizzy Gillespie and later
photographed The Beatles, Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones in the 1960s. His photographs were published
as My ’60s (1998) and Flash (2002).
Bent Rej (b. 1940) was working for the Danish tabloid Ekstra Bladet in 1965 when he was assigned to
chronicle the Scandinavian and German legs of The Rolling Stones’ European tour. He soon became part
of the Stones’ entourage and is credited with introducing model Anita Pallenberg, who became the lover
of both Brian Jones and Keith Richards, to the band. He also worked for the iconic 1960s music magazine
Fabulous. Three hundred pictures Rej took of the band in 1965–66 were published as The Rolling Stones:
In the Beginning (2006).
