USS PeaceKeeper Still Around
By Cmdr. James “DragonStar” Coulter
Greetings Region Four,
How has 2006 been treating everyone so far? Except for all the rain we got as of
late I’ve been doing ok. Been kind of getting to know what it’s like to be a duck...LOL.
Oh wait a sec I’m getting a little ahead of myself. Let me try this again. Hi, my name
James Coulter a.k.a. DragonStar in the IRC #Fleetchat. I’m also the new CO of the
USS PeaceKeeper.
I just wanted to give all of us here on the PeaceKeeper a quick hello to everyone
in Region 4 and to let you all know what’s going on with us. There have been a couple of new things going on with us this year, the first being a new CO and command
staff. The other is that we changed our chapter status from a meeting to a Correspondence Chapter.
Although we are no longer meeting publicly we still do meet online every third
Saturday at 7pm in our IRC chat. There is two ways of getting to our chat; one is going directly to our logon web page at http://www.usspeacekeeper.org/chat/index.php
or look up the PeaceKeeper channel on IRC. We also use Yahoo E-groups to help
still in contact with each other.
So far it’s been a lot of work but everything is looking good and hopefully everything will be back to normal, well as normal as things can get here on the PeaceKeeper
In closing I’d just like to say to all unassigned StarFleet members and any other
StarFleet members that may want to join a corry chapter we’re looking for you.
Come join us for our new adventures as we explore this new direction in our lives
and remember, “We’re the good times the Romulans warned you about.”

the FUNny Pages
Greetings 4th Fleet and Beyond,
Please, no rushing or pushing, there is enough room for all couples on the Ark,. Please have your boarding
pass out with your Federation issued ID . . . excuse me, only one carry on item per person. For those not in CA,
we are starting to look like Ferenginar. However I think I can bring some sunshine to your wet corner of the Region and beyond with this latest issue of the Subspace Communicator.
This being my forth issue now, I’ve started adding some of those bell and whistles I spoke of earlier on.
Through out this issue you will notice changes to various layouts, more graphics and a better flow of articles and
items. But the FUN does not stop there, I have more for you.
Once again we have ‘Hanging with Guinan’, our review column, this time with a guest reviewer. In the newly
formatted ‘4th Fleet’ section I have now included Ship meeting information, in hopes that it will foster new friendships and fellowship with other ships though out the Region. I’ve also included Commissioning and Launch dates.
Speaking of dates, check out the new formatted ‘STARDATES’ section. Now with even more stuff to fill your
calendar with. I’ve even expended and reformatted the STARFLEET and Region 4 contact information.
It took some time to track him down, but I found him and now he is appearing here. Yes folks ‘Heard Morn
Say . . .’ is now going to be a regular columnists, and we all know how he can gossip about the latest Star Trek
news and tid bites.
Okay here is the biggie, we now have a ‘Trivia Contest’ with a prize. Thanks to our Rec Deck columnists
Truman Temple for this latest contribution. I myself will be donating the prize for each contest from my vast and
varied Star Trek collection . I’m not going to tell you what our first prize will be, however I can say I have over
325 autographs in my personal collection. Several of them are duplicates from various Trek actors I have personal
meet over the years. I also have books, models and much more. So please enjoy the contest and get those submissions in.
Now with all these changes I’ve also kept your old favorites. The Regional Coordinator, Vice Regional Coordinator, Chief of Staff and other R4 staff columns are still here to keep you informed of what is happening in the
Region. I will also try to bring you the latest breaking news from STARFLEET. However it’s not all just logs and
reports. Check out the R4 Conventions listing and start making plans to attend and visit with friends old and new.
And lets not forget the pictures section, which now has a new name… ‘Cadet Review’. It’s a little something I
heard in a movie once or fifty times.
I recommend that if you are able to print at least one copy of each issue of the Subspace Communicator, put it
in a binder and use it on your next recruiting table. For those not aware, I try to add graphics to the right side of
each page to help you better find items when flipping through an issue. I’ve also been trying to feature a different
ship on each cover. You ship could be the next cover.
However to keep all this happening, I still need YOU the membership to make submissions. Send me your
articles of Ship events, Away mission reports, Ship promotions, Academy graduations, personal announcements
and of course pictures. Remember this newsletter is about YOU. As such it can only reflect YOU when you make
those submissions. I’m having a blast here in my office, so keep me busy each issue. Share, share and share some
more the wonderful and FUN things happening throughout the Region.
See you in a couple of months here in the FUNny pages
Live long and prosper,

ADM. Ed Nowlin
RC's Log (or should that be Nowlin's Ark?)
Greetings from the far reaches of Wet Northern California! Well, we haven't had to affix pontoons to the Starbase
yet, but I'm beginning to wonder. Has STARFLEET ever had
a FlagArk?
Now, on to business...The 2006 Region 4 Conference.
Several people have asked when the website will be up, etc. I
am happy to report that the process has started and shortly
we should have a website up and ready to take conference
registrations not long after this issue goes to press (Larry,
Michelle: Don't make a liar out of me!). An announcement of
the URL will be made to the R4 Listserve and of course, the
site will be linked off of region4.org. I can tell you that this is
not going to be one to miss! From what I know of (and yes,
Michelle has some things she is not making me aware of,
which scares the *ell out of me), this conference will be the
"Must Attend" Fleet Event of 2006!
Now to go into some STARFLEET news. Now as most of
you know, I generally don't bring 'Fleet issues into the Regional Spotlight, as my feeling has always been that, you the
member are here to have fun, and leave the 'fleet issues to
your RC (namely, me). However, some things have went
down that I feel should be addressed.
As of Sunday, April 9, Commander, STARFLEET Mandi
Livingston has went on Maternity Leave, leaving Les Rickard
as acting CS, with Sal Lizard as acting VCS and Bob Chin as
acting CompOps Chief. Now some of you are probably going,
"Les Rickard is acting CS?!? What happened to Sunnie?"
Well, here's the long and short of it.
Mandi Livingston, our Commander, STARFLEET announced last month that both Dennis Rayburn and Sunnie
Planthold were relieved of their positions of Chief of Staff to
the Commander, STARFLEET and Vice-Commander, STARFLEET respectfully. To that end, Greg Trotter was appointed
as the new CoS to the CS and Les Rickard was appointed
Vice-Commander, STARFLEET. Mandi also announced that
there were some shady dealings going on regarding the 2004
STARFLEET Election process. To that end, I am attaching
the message she sent out (see page 14) and requesting our
esteemed editor to please find some room in this issue to reprint it.

I feel that you, the members have the right to see this,
but I would ask you to not become disgruntled. As a Region, we've done it better and cleaner than any other Region in the 'Fleet. I've heard from numerous people how
envious they are of Region 4, because we've never had
the political scheming, infighting, mudslinging that seems
to permeate other regions in STARFLEET. We've overcome bigger issues than this, and its all because YOU,
THE MEMBER don't allow these things to happen or allow
them to get in the way of that which is most important,
FUN!
Speaking of fun, have you given STARFLEET Trivia a
try?
Its at:
http://my.funtrivia.com/tournament/
STARFLEETs-Trivia-Challenge-44170.html
I'm doing quite well, but Anthony Spotts of the Shuttle
Battle Born is kicking six and taking names. Lt. Col.
Spotts, to paraphrase from another epic Sci-Fi Movie,
"Light Colonels don't pull peoples arms out of their sockets
when they lose... Admirals have been known to do that"
and "I have a new strategy. Let the Admiral Win" <Grin>
See ya next round!
RADM Chrissy Killian
Greetings Region 4 Members! I hope this finds everyone healthy and happy, or at least trying to be healthy and
happy. It’s the journey that counts…isn’t that what they
say…and who are they? Oh well….Hi gang!!
Things are going great here at Region 4 Headquarters
except for the weather controls. For some bizarre reason
we get thunder storms and lighting inside the station…
yeah…inside. I’m not really sure what is going on, but this
is an ongoing problem. I have filed a complaint with the
stations engineers. I’m at a lost as to why they always
giggle why I ask them about it. I will have to talk to Admiral Nowlin about this if their behavior doesn’t improve.
I’m not sure if many of you have read about the recent
changes in STARFLEET upper management. I think
things have calmed down. If you have any questions
about the events, please feel free to contact Ed or myself
and will be glad to discuss the issues involved.
Currently, Les Rickard, who was appointed as Vice,
Command STARFLEET, is currently running STARFLEET
due to the current Commander STARFLEET, Mandi
Livingston being out on maternity leave. Mandi was due
on April 11th. I know that here at the end of the week, she
still has not had her baby girl. We wish her all the luck!
There are a few things upcoming for Region 4 and
STARFLEET. The STARFLEET International Conference
is coming up in August 4-7, 2006 in Philadelphia PA. I am
(Continued on page 8)

VRC (Continued from page 7)
really looking forward to the conference, but it actually has
nothing to do with the conference itself. Philadelphia is a
wonderful city with lots of rich history and I am looking forward to spending a few extra days there.
Also coming up in October 13 – 15, 2006 is the Region
4 Conference. It is being held in the beautiful northern California of Redding. Cascade Station is the host chapter. I
can speak from personal experience dealing with members
of Cascade Station and they treat guests right! There’s lot
of fun things to do up there. I encourage everyone to come
up and join the fun. I understand some of the things that are
being looked at include a tour of the dam and a night of star
gazing. This will be Ed Nowlin’s last conference as Region
4 Regional Coordinator. If you haven’t had the chance to
meet Ed, come say hello, and goodbye. There will also be a
debate among the candidates for the next Regional Coordinator. Sounds like fun.

* We are currently the 6th Largest Region in STARFLEET
ADM Jonathan Simmons
April already. Seems like 2006 is flying by. We’ve seen
a lot of interesting developments in STARFLEET since the
last issue. From the changes at HQ that mirror what we see
on the evening news to more efficient ways to shuttle, the
future looks to be *very* interesting as we move into
“Conference Season”.
To date, I have received zero submissions for an R4
Handbook or any information on the chapters for a one
sheet info document to include in the handbook. So until I
hear or see otherwise, I am putting that on the back burner
and moving on to other things for STARFLEET’s Best Region.
I want to see this region and its’ chapters GROW. To
that effect, I am working up some ideas for PR and Marketing that I will be soliciting help and advice on. I would like to
produce a booklet on what works and what doesn’t so that
our chapters can look at what some others have done and
try new ideas. For more info or to help… holler at me.
On the official front, here are the regional strength totals
from the STARFLEET Database in the ongoing effort to let
the entire region know where we stand in the STARFLEET
Recruiting Contest for this year.
Region 4 Chapter Strength Totals for APRIL 2006*
UNASSIGNED
18
In addition (or division, as the case may be) our region
averages 13.9 Members per Chapter and that is a little
less than has been in the last few reports, but is still a decent average when compared to that of other large regions.
We have been mirroring the slow, but steadily shrinking trend in STARFLEET as members decide not to renew
and chapter foci leans more inward toward chapter functions as opposed to outward regional and fleet-level efforts.
You are not alone. Many chapters throughout STARFLEET are doing the same thing. Below is a list of Fleet
Strength Totals over the last year that I have compile since
I have been monitoring them in the STARFLEET Database…

So, as you can see, the Fleet has not really made any
significant progress in growth over the last year, despite
some attempts to the contrary. We’ve gained 9 member and
we’ve lost 4 chapters. With the number of shuttles launch
and commissioned over the last year, that number lowers
into negative numbers. When you add to that the number of
under strength chapters, we’ve seen a very significant decline over the last year.
While some would blame this on the lack of any Public
Relations and/or Marketing on behalf of our illustrious leadership, I believe that the problems are far beyond that. The
cancellation of Enterprise, the stalling of Star Trek Movies
that we’ve come to enjoy every few years and the growing
apathy of the general membership as they learn more and
more about our administration’s follies have taken its toll in
both members and chapters. Many are looking for a change
and many more are disgusted and fed up with the internal
conflicts and politics at the top levels of our organization.
“What can we do about it?” you ask?
Good question. I think that we can remember why we
joined and what STARFLEET means to each of us. I think
that we need to take back our fleet and return it to the fundamental basics of what it means to make friends and explore
new things. We should be a *leader* in fandom organizations and we need to start showing it on a visible scale.
“How to we start doing that?” you ask?
We start by telling people about us. Asking questions of
our leadership and offering to help where help is needed.
Talk to your CO’s and your fellow co-members and see what
they would like to accomplish and what they would like to see
the Chapter/Region/Fleet accomplish.
Remember, STARFLEET begins with US, the members.
Recruiting still is a big focus for me, so if there is any
way that I or the R4 Staff can help… or you would like recruiting assistance, please contact me at [email protected]. I would be very happy to help you and your
chapter grow.
Until next time, rock on.

4th Brigade HQ is currently accepting nominations for
their Annual Brigade Valor awards. These awards are meant
to recognize 4 individual Marines and one Marine unit
throughout the Brigade.
Those awards are as follows:
♦ Brigade Marine of the Year (Cross of Valor)
♦ Brigade Officer of the Year (Sword of Valor)
♦ Brigade Volunteer of the year (Shield of Valor)
♦ Brigade NCO of the year (Star of Valor)
♦ Brigade Unit of the year (Legion of Valor)
Marine of the Year is for spirit, image and attitude of a
individual Brigade marine.
Officer of the Year is for personal and professional leadership standards.
Volunteer of the year is for that Marine whom has made
the most impact in community service within their brigade.
NCO of the Year is that Marine NCO who has gone
above and beyond the call of duty for a Brigade NCO.
Unit of the Year is for that Brigade which has exemplified
the spirit, image and gung ho attitude of the STARFLEET
MARINE CORPS within their brigade.
SFMC HQ also gives out a version of these, with the
VALOR heading changed to HONOR.
In 4th Brigade history, we have had two HONORS winners, Commodore Scott Sommer (SFMC Volunteer of the
year: Shield of HONOR) and the 1st MSG, USS CENTURION (SFMC Unit of the Year: 2004 Legion of HONOR).
Each one of our VALOR winners goes up against the winners of the same award from the other brigades. Very tough
choices for the GS and the Commandant.
The VALOR award winners will be announced in May
and the HONOR award winners will be announced at IC.
4th BDE is always trying to bolster it's standing within the
Corps; at present we have 5 units in three states; California,
Nevada and Arizona. We used to be at double that strength.
Sadly we've lost the following units for one reason or another.

The First Duty: A Public Apology
"The first duty of every Starfleet officer is to the truth, whether it's historical truth
or scientific truth or personal truth. If you can't find it within yourself to stand up and
tell the truth, then you don't deserve to wear that uniform" - Jean Luc Picard in
ST:TNG "The First Duty"
Greetings,
I'm coming to you today to explain something that has been a burden on me for quite sometime. I
took part in activities that I am extremely ashamed of, and I come today to sincerely apologize and ask
for your forgiveness. I know this message will anger many, disappoint others, and leave many shocked.
But, I must do this because it is the *right* thing to do. The right thing to do is not the easiest most
times, but nevertheless, I want to begin to right some wrongs, unburden my soul, and move on.
Back in the Spring the 2004 STARFLEET Election, I was in the middle of campaign preparations
with my team and advisors. We had begun working on ideas, much of the platform, and cobbling together a slate of people for the many EC and mission critical staff positions. It was a very refreshing and
productive time for me in STARFLEET. I was working on something I had had always wanted to do,
and working toward goals I felt would be beneficial to this organization that I love and have spent half
my life in.
Knowing that many in Fleet had problems with a certain individual who was my longtime friend, he
and I decided it would be best if he stayed in the background, not a part of my public campaign. So, he
was a closeted advisor, working behind the scenes, someone I could bounce ideas off of via email or
phone.
One day mid-Spring, I got a call from this person. Have you ever had one of those conversations that
were so crucial, almost like a focal point in time, that you can remember exactly what you were doing
during it, where you were standing, and recall it so clearly it's like a playing a DVD back in your mind
when you think about it? Well, this conversation was such a moment for me. On the phone as well was
someone recently affiliated with Les Rickard's proposed team. These two individuals came to me with a
plan to feed information from the Fleet First team to my team. I was very unsure at first, knowing that it
would be wrong, and knowing that it wasn't a good idea. But after some more conversation, I was convinced to accept the offer. I feel my dreams and aspirations to serve as CS, as well as some concerns
about leaks on my team, were played on. And in a moment of weakness, I gave in to my base instincts,
and agreed to the plan. I had been convinced this was in SFI's best interest, and I didn't listen to my gut
instinct, my upbringing, and my conscious.
Now, I can say that most of the information given was little more than informative, but that nothing
major was accomplished by this cloak and dagger game. And, from talking to a few individuals in the
past week or so about this, trying to seek forgiveness and unburden myself of this weight, this would not
be the first time in STARFLEET politics that intelligence gathering games have taken place during elections. Unfortunately, politics is an ugly pastime no matter the environment - government, social organizations, churches, etc. Now, I am definitely not saying this to excuse my behavior. I'm just probably the

first person to actually admit to doing something like this. But, I can no longer remain silent.
I really wanted to trust this person that proposed the plan to me. However, I have regretted making
this decision since day one. And I feel deep shame for my part in this. Deep inside, I know this was
wrong and despicable.
Since the election, this has been a skeleton in my closet. And yes, I feel it has been preyed on and
used to further other people's agendas. I feel that this secret, along with my guilt and shame, have
eroded my effectiveness as a leader, and I am truly sorry. While many of my poor decisions have been
born of these personal specters and knowing this skeleton existed for use against me, I take full responsibility and own up to my part. However, this did lead me to have tremendous trepidation in making
some needed staff changes that have recently come about.
However, I needed to unburden myself of this. And that is why I will no longer let it haunt me. I
can deal better with the embarrassment and the anger, even the recourse that may be taken against me,
than I can deal with the guilt and shame. I was raised better. I know better. And in my religious upbringing, I was taught that confession is a crucial step in recovery. I know some will question, "Why
confess now" and it comes down to this: The burden of it all was a weight I had to rid myself of, and in
the midst of gaining new insight, and listening to the advice of a long time friend and counselor, I felt
the time was right. The staffing changes that have taken place were needed, and provided such an opportunity to bare my soul, confess, and ask for forgiveness. On top of that, the reality that I am soon to
be a mother has dramatically changed me and led me to some self-reflection and desire to be the best
example to my child that I can be.
I have contacted Les Rickard and have disclosed to him the events personally. I have asked him for
his forgiveness. When I called him, I had no clue how he would react. Les Rickard is a good man. He
and I have had troubles in the past, but he was very gracious and he took the time to listen to me. He
said that the past is the past, but that it is now time to do what is best for STARFLEET. He forgave me,
and he let me know he would do whatever he could to help me, the EC, and STARFLEET. He expressed his feelings that he believes I am truly repentant and that I have grown and matured from this
whole situation, and he truly hopes that I can continue to serve out the remainder of my term as Commander, STARFLEET. He feels that anything else would not serve the greater good of STARFLEET.
After telling Les, I wanted to tell the leadership of this organization and you, the membership. And
regardless of what may happen, I have freed myself of the leverage held over me by those who did not
have Fleet's best interest at heart.
I do want to state that those behind this during the last election are no longer with the team, and that
the rest of the team did not know about this, and they are just finding out about this now, with this
email. To them, I ask forgiveness as well.
I can't express the degree of shame and guilt I have dealt with. And now, I add embarrassment to
that as well. But, I do sincerely ask you all for forgiveness. I'm not a perfect person, but I can own up
to my mistakes, my lack of judgment, and learn from them in order to become a better person and the
person that many expected me to be and the one I was raised to be.
Thank you.

USS Indiana - Region 1
Thanks to both the USS Indiana and the USS Armageddon of Region One for bringing my attention to this
opportunity. My wife and I were hoping to meet some of
you there, but we wondered how we would know any of
you. Heh heh, I almost wore my uniform. You may roll
your eyes, but I would not have been too far out of place.
Most folks wore suits and ties, but many of us wore jeans
and a nice shirt and even t-shirts sporting various sci-fi
themes. The theatre staff wore little magnetic flashy LED
pins on their uniforms. Four of the 501st Legion's blastertoting stormtroopers were there and they graciously posed
with symphony-goers. I couldn't resist. (See pictures on
the Yahoo Group). Those guys have great costumes!
Betty and I were looking forward to a thoroughly enjoyable
evening of some of our favorite music.
I have always liked orchestral and classical music. Not
only instrumental, but choral and organ music as well.
Those music appreciation classes in my short stay at college really helped me not just "hear", but "listen" as well.
It's like being in on a humorous story, because you "get"
everything. I'm particularly fond of the brass section. I was
a musician once. I played trombone throughout jr. high,
high school, and into college. I used to OWN an 8-track to
Star Wars:ANH and I wore it out. I like to think I know how
to listen to an orchestra a little better than your average
person. I admire how music in movies is not designed only
to complement the picture, but to move you and evoke
emotions as well. The music of Star Trek, whether it was
TOS, TNG, DS9, or VOY always said "Here is Adventure!"
to me. The theme to "Enterprise" said something a little
different, though. I'd like to hear back from you on what
you think the producers of ENT were trying to say with their
choice of "Where My Heart will Take Me" for a theme song.
The music of science fiction scoops up your soul and carries it with the story.
But, I'm starting to hear dozens of DELETE keys being
pressed, so I should go on.
Wow! I really wasn't sure how great the Indianapolis
Symphony Orchestra was going to be, but I figured I'd give
it a try. Thanks to Betty, my wife, for just going ahead and
getting these tickets. If not for her...well, you know. We
wanted to show up a little early and take a look around at
the beautiful interior of this old theatre, but we wound up
walking in just in time to miss the opening number and got
the door closed in our faces. They weren't kidding, folks
DON'T get up and move about during the music! Not to
worry though, because there were great sci-fi movie posters and dozens of props and costumes all over the lobby

Deep Space Nine is back!
When the final episode of Deep Space Nine, “What You Leave Behind” aired on June 22, 1999 that wasn’t the end of the
story, within the pages of the novels Deep Space Nine continues to weave its spell over fans world wide. The post-finale
Deep Space Nine novels have carried the storyline and the characters forward and have become the most critically acclaimed
and most widely read of all the Star Trek novel series.
It’s been a year since the release of the last post-finale Deep Space Nine novel but the next installment, Star Trek: Deep
Space Nine, Warpath is available now in book stores and through online retailers. Written by bestselling author David Mack
Warpath will pick up the storyline from where Worlds of Deep Space Nine, Volume 3 left off.
It is now one year since the end of the Dominion War and the recovery and rebuilding efforts slowly continue across the
quadrant. For those assigned to DS9 it has been a year of change and startling discoveries. Bajor is now a member of the
Federation, Sisko is back and the Founders are gone. Or are they?
Appointed by Odo to learn peaceful coexistence aboard Deep Space Nine and aid Kira in any way that he can,
Taran'atar, an Honored Elder among the Jem'Hadar, had for months been a staunch, if conflicted, ally to the crew of the station, ever struggling to understand the mission on which he was sent; until something went horrifically wrong.
Consumed by self-doubt and an ever-growing rage, in Worlds of Deep Space Nine Taran'atar suddenly lashed out
against those he was sworn to aid. While Captain Kira Nerys and Lieutenant Ro Laren both lie near death aboard Deep Space
9, their assailant has taken a hostage and fled into Cardassian space, pursued by Commander Elias Vaughn on the U.S.S.
Defiant. But as the hunt unfolds, Taran'atar's true objective becomes less certain, as the rogue Jem'Hadar leads the Defiant to
a discovery even more shocking than his crime.
When it comes to complex storylines that hook you in David Mack has proven to be a master and in Warpath Mack’s fiction crackles with energy as he leaves his own unique mark on this series. The prose is vivid, the plot riveting and the characterizations as good as it gets. One word of caution though, the ending has a very shocking twist, so avoid spoilers for this
novel if you intend to read it.
Walter Koenig Examines Life After Apocalypse
Winnipeg, Manitoba—Star Trek’s Walter Koenig re-releases acclaimed
tale of life after an alien invasion in Buck Alice and the Actor-Robot.
Following the aftermath of an alien invasion, Walter Koenig (“Chekov”
from Star Trek) takes the reader on a journey through the human mind and
heart, with starships and creatures from another planet thrown in for good
measure.
The Milliginians…
From a distant world they came, a race not unlike our own but technologically superior enough to impose their genocidal interests upon our
Mother Earth with a force so catastrophic it reduces the global human population to a small handful of survivors while the surface of the planet is blanketed by a white powder…
…a science fiction writer with presidential aspirations, a schizophrenic,
an actor convinced he's the robot he'd portrayed on a television series in
pre-invasion times, a self-proclaimed Son of God, a girl chosen to bear the
children of a new civilization in the last known settlement of humanity…
Buck Alice and the Actor-Robot also features an introduction by acclaimed author George Clayton Johnson of Logan’s Run, Ocean’s Eleven
and Twilight Zone fame. It is a novel Leonard Nimoy calls, "A wellconceived science-fiction thriller."
The novel is available through all major US bookstores (just ask at the
counter) or online at Amazon.com and similar online retailers. Likewise, the
eBook edition is also available at Amazon.com and Fictionwise.com. Both
editions are also available direct from Coscom Entertainment at

Heard Morn Say . . .
Compiled from various sources
Trek 11 Not Dead?
Screenwriter Erik Jendresen told SyFyPortal that his
proposed Star Trek: The Beginning, the 11th film in the
franchise, is not dead, though Paramount has made no
decisisions about moving forward with the franchise.
Jendresen's script would take place after the events
of TV's Star Trek: Enterprise and before those of the original series, during the Earth-Romulan war. The film would
center on an entirely new crew and ship, led by a captain
called Tiberius Chase, the site reported. The film is envisioned as the first in a trilogy that would culminate in the
formation of the United Federation of Planets.
"We wanted to reveal the actual cause of that war,
which was surprising to all involved at the time," Jendresen told the site. "We simply wanted to reveal the truth
behind that startling incident."
Jendresen (TV's Band of Brothers) was commissioned to write a script last year, but uncertainty about the
moribund franchise was heightened when Paramount
merged with DreamWorks and management changed.
For now, Paramount is still evaluating what to do with
its most profitable franchise and whether it will resurrect
Jendresen's script.
"There is a producer at Paramount who has been
championing this and the notion that we have the opportunity to plug the gap with this trilogy." Jendresen said, without providing names. "We have a chance here to fill in the
canon, and to create a continuum ostensibly from the beginning from Enterprise all the way out to the future."
Original Series Action Figures To Mark Trek Birthday
New Star Trek action figures, including Captain Kirk
and Captain Pike in their captains' chairs, will be released
in September.
Toy News International reported that Diamond Select
will release the initial offering on September 8th, 2006, the
40th anniversary of the first broadcast of Star Trek. The
Captain James T. Kirk Captain's Chair box set, a model of
Kirk wearing the classic gold uniform and a scale replica
of his command chair, will be available on that date.
In addition, Diamond Select is offering a Captain
Christopher Pike Captain's Chair box set. Both will be
window-boxed, sized on the same scale as Art Asylum's
previous original series action figures.
Diamond Select will also produce a special 2006 San
Diego Comic Con exclusive version of the Kirk set, featuring the captain in the shirt he worse in the second original
series pilot episode, "The Cage." That figure will be released in the summer to coincide with the convention,
according to Toy News International.
Diamond Select will also release a number of Art Asy-
lum Next Generation figures this year, noted Action-Figure. The
figures which debuted at ToyFair include Picard and Troi in their
duty uniforms, each 7" tall, packaged in a blister card pack.
Takei Discusses Hope and Backlash After Coming Out
George Takei spoke to the official Star Trek site about his
sexuality, the politics of equality and his full schedule over the
next few months, reiterating his desire to spread human rights
to all Americans.
In a new video interview at StarTrek.com, the first of several planned by the site from CBS studios, Sandy Stone asked
Takei about his experiences since coming out last October. "It
almost overshadowed the indictment of Scooter Libby," laughed
Takei, and then led to inevitable jokes on late night television.
But as for the phrase "coming out", noted Takei, "We've been
out, my partner [Brad Altman] and I, for a long, long time. We've
been together for two decades...our names have been together
carved in granite on building walls."
What changed was that Takei discussed his sexual orientation and private life with the press, saying that because of the
nature of his career and civic work, he had never made that a
public issue. He reiterated that the California legislature had
passed a same-sex marriage bill, and "I really thought California
and Massachusetts were going to become the bookends of the
United States" in supporting gay rights and gay marriage. All
the bill needed was the signature of one other actor to become
law - Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Takei said that be-

Once again, I take writing instrument in hand to let you know what your Klingon allies are up to and how you can be a part

Recently, members of the StarFire Region traveled to Pasadena for Creation’s Grand Slam Summit. Okay, so this year it

thing about a Starfleet conference. But we will see. If I do attend, make sure to have much bloodwine waiting for me. It would
be appreciated.
That is all. Qapla’ Starfleet!

If you'd like to start a Marine unit on one of these ships, with the exception of the Wendell Fertig, please contact the ships
CO and the 4th BDE Commander. Make sure that the ship CO is the first person you call; we don't want to step on anyone's
toes here. All it takes to start a marine unit is One (01) marine.
Speaking of Marines, the SFMC introduced a new ribbon that went into effect on 01 January 2006; it 's the Brigade muster award. The only way you can earn it is to attend your OWN brigade muster. Unfortunately, attending a muster outside of
your area doesn't count. 4th BDE HQ would like to entertain ideas for a Brigade muster hopefully before the Regional summit
in Redding. If you have any ideas, please contact the BDE Commander.
Until next time.

upstairs and downstairs.
The first piece was John Williams' "Main Title" from Star
Wars and beforehand they had started some fog machines.
Then as soon as the music started there were lasers of green
and blue piercing the mist. Once the piece ended we were
allowed to take our seats. Betty and I sat in row G initially,
but we moved after the intermission so we could get a better
overall view of the orchestra.
The conductor, Mr. Jack Everly, had comments between
pieces, and one could really tell that he does this not only as
a job, but because he loves the work. He was pretty funny a
couple of times. We had a chance to listen to him speak
briefly after the concert at the "encores". He arranged the
next piece, which was called "Lost in Syndication". The XFiles, Twilight Zone, Lost in Space, Space 1999, The Jetsons, and StarGate:SG-1 themes were played. As each one
was played I leaned over to Betty and told her what it was. I
really felt like I was an insider at that point, because I've loved
the shows and the music for so long.
John Williams' music figured prominently in this event for
obvious reasons. His "Adventures on Earth" from the movie
E.T. was next. Music from Superman was up next and a
tenor named Mike Eldred sang "Can You Read My Mind",
which runs throughout the movie. The "Superman March"
was the last bit in this section.
The fog machines started up again and the lasers
beamed about as the orchestra swung into "Star Trek through
the Years". Walter Koenig walked out to thunderous applause ad delivered the "Space, the Final Frontier" monologue from TOS. A giant screen dropped from the ceiling and
showed some clips from TOS. Nichelle Nichols can sing,
bless her heart, but she didn't have nothin' on Kristen Plumley
as she walked out in a fantastic red velvet TOS female duty
uniform and sang the haunting TOS vocals. Walter looked as
if HE liked it too. I know I did. The lights came up and we
had a little intermission to enjoy more of the props, models
and posters in the lobby.
After the break, the orchestra played several other wellknown pieces from "2001, a Space Odyssey", the distinctive
music from Close Encounters of the Third Kind and then Mr.
Mike Elder was once again in the limelight. He sang "Where
my Heart will Take Me". I was a teeny bit disappointed. I
grew to like the strummy, rock ballad version that came on
with every Enterprise episode. While not orchestral like other
iterations of Trek, it actually sounded good and seemed to
speak to the listener of hope and success through adversity.
The drums and electronic guitar made it feel contemporary on
TV, but this was a very tame, , orchestral version...and I didn't
appreciate the difference. I sang along with the words under
my breath anyway. The Indy orchestra then played some
"Harry Potter" music, and a rather long series from the time

traveling romance movie Somewhere in Time. Very relaxing.
Do any of you remember 1951 movie The Day the
Earth Stood Still? I haven't seen it in a whopping long
time, but it has some OK music in it! Mr. Koenig came out
one last time to narrate Klaatu's parting speech. The final
words: "Your choice is simple. Join us and live in peace
or pursue your present course and face obliteration. We
shall be waiting for your answer. The decision rests with
you." -- were quite dramatically delivered by Koenig and I
LOVED it.
The last two pieces were also from Star Wars:TPM -"Duel of the Fates" with the outstanding Indy "Sci-Fi-ettes"
choir giving it their best effort. "The Throne Room and
End Title" wrapped up the show. Ms. Plumley and Mr.
Everly picked one name out of a jar and gave away one of
those very nice lightsaber toys. Afterward, Betty and I
went out to the lobby where Walter Koenig was signing
photos. I got his book "Warped Factors" and got him to
sign it for me. I wanted to get him to say the line from
Wrath of Khan where he and CAPT Terell are in the cargo
pod and Chekov sees the name "Botany Bay" on the seatbelt, but I could tell he was getting tired and there were
other folks waiting. I would have PAID him to say that
line: "SS Botany Bay. (thinks) Botany Bay?... Oh no!"

cause Schwarzenegger was from the motion picture industry and had worked with gays and lesbians, he expected him to sign the bill, but the governor "played to the
narrowest, most reactionary segment of his constituency
and vetoed that bill." As a result, noted Takei, he felt that
he had to speak out, and in order for his voice to be authentic, he needed to go public to the press about his sexual orientation.
Asked why people are so intrigued by the fact that
"Mr. Sulu, so to speak, is gay", in Stone's words, Takei
pointed out that Sulu is not gay and that might be part of
the reason for the interest. "They thought, because I
played Sulu as a heterosexual guy, the fact that the actor
is playing him is gay...that is news." Sex, he added, is a
primal instinct and a point of interest among celebrities in
general. This year, he noted, several straight actors
earned Oscar nominations for playing gay characters,
including Heath Ledger's "heartbreaking" performance in
Brokeback Mountain, Philip Seymour Hoffman as Truman
Capote who "was very out and very fey" and Felicity Huffman playing a transsexual in transition.
When he was teenager, added the actor, "it was an
anguishing time" to realize that his hormones reacted in a
way not considered normal. He looked at muscle magazines when no one was around, then grabbed girly magazines when anyone came by. Nowadays, he cited Time
magazine's issue on gay teenagers last year and said the
gist of the article is that "We are making forward movement. However, he added, "whenever forward movement

is made, there is always the backlash." Takei believes that if
heterosexual marriage has to be protected, the marriage itself
is very fragile...a concept borne out by high divorce rates,
infidelity, abuse and other problems. "It may be man and
woman, but that is not marriage."
Takei is in the midst of a speaking tour of university campuses on the issue of equality for the Human Rights Commission and has narrated a documentary, Crossing East, about
Asian immigrants - another issue near to his heart, as his family experienced persecution and incarceration during World
War II. In terms of the experiences he and his partner have
had among Trek fans and others since their public declaration, "Our loins were girded for that backlash," he said, and "it
was really a pleasant surprise" how positive the mail, e-mail
and comments were.
The hate mail, he added, was almost all anonymous,
while he received moving letters from gays and lesbians who
identified with his experiences and also "mail from straight
male married suburban Republicans" who said they were willing to support gay marriage in states like Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania, where the legislature is now considering a bill to amend the state constitution to ban same sex
marriages.

Ryan, Blalock, Park Get New Roles
It's been a good week for the women of Star Trek. Last
week it was announced that Jeri Ryan ("Seven of Nine") has
been cast in a drama pilot for CBS called Shark. She will costar with James Woods, playing a district attorney and the
new boss of Woods' character, a celebrity attorney-turnedprosecutor.
Linda Park ("Hoshi Sato") has also been cast in a drama
pilot, this one for NBC, called Raines, according to TheFutonCritic.com. The show stars Jeff Goldblum as an eccentric
police officer who talks to dead victims to help him find their
murderers. Park will play a character named "Sally Lance."
Jolene Blalock ("T'Pol") last week went up to Alberta,
Canada, to start filming a TV movie called "Dream Me a Murder," according to The Calgary Sun. Production will run two
weeks, through April 6. "Dream" is scheduled to air in June
on Lifetime in the U.S., and on Movie Central in Canada.

U.S.S. Voyager and many other ships, props and set
pieces, and he also authored several Star Trek publications.
Other special guests at the ISDC include Buzz Aldrin,
Apollo 11 astronaut and prominent Star Trek fan; Burt
Rutan, designer of SpaceShipOne; Peter Diamandis,
founder of the X PRIZE Foundation; Dennis Tito, the first

many others.
The conference will address a broad spectrum of
space-related interests, such as steps required to land
humans on Mars, a preview of the next generation of
spacecraft, and the search for microbial life in our solar
system, plus discussions on government policy, space
tourism and dozens of other topics.
Co-sponsored by The Planetary Society and the National Space Society, the ISDC will be held in Los Angeles
at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel near the LAX airport. For

Star Trek Magazine to be Available Worldwide in June
After over 10 years of providing information to UK,
Australian and New Zealand residents Star Trek Magazine formally known as Star Trek Monthly will be re–
launching on a mission to provide news to a far more
global audience.
Star Trek Magazine will be re-launching in June to the
International Market Place, meaning that beginning this
June onwards it will be available worldwide.
The magazine which has explored many frontiers of
Star Trek and it’s fan base will continue to do so but will
obviously be undergoing a refit in order to widen it’s appeal to a more global audience which will include the US
and Canadian market place. As a result of these changes
the current editor John Freeman will be passing on the
Captaincy to a new editor who is as yet unknown.
John’s final issue will be issue 127 which will be the
final issue before the re-launch of the magazine. John is
very optimistic about these changes and made the following statement in his formal letter to all contributors of the
magazine.
“I hope you'll agree that this is great news for the
Magazine, as it means all those people who have long
advocated US distribution will finally see the Magazine on
sale in their local stores. It also means the title will benefit
from a re-launch from Titan in all its key markets, including
the UK and Eire, which I am sure will benefit all the loyal
fans who have long supported the title.”
Freeman added that current distribution wouldn’t be
affected. "The changes shouldn't affect distribution of
STAR TREK MAGAZINE in the UK and Eire, Australia or
New Zealand, which will continue to be on sale in all the
usual outlets as before. Existing subscriptions will be unaffected by the changes.”
