A Look Ahead
The Outlook for 2007
Head Coach Kwame Lloyd and his staff are looking forward to the
2007 season. Fifteen new faces join the mix in 2007 to go along with
the 14 returners which should make for a promising season. For the
first time since Lloyd has been at the helm, he does not have a single
senior on this year's roster. The group of 15 that he has brought in
is definitely his largest recruiting class in seven seasons. Lloyd is
expected to field a competitive team this season and sees no reason
why his squad cannot contend for a conference championship and
another bid into the NCAA tournament. Despite no seniors and 15
freshmen, his expectations are still very high, and if the team can stay
healthy, there is no reason why this team can't make some noise in
the South Region.
GOALKEEPERS Junior Erin Wojtkun (Fairfax, VA/W.T.
Woodson H.S.) enters her third year as the
starting goalkeeper once again. She backed
up her freshman season with another stellar year in 2006. She finished 12-5-1 with
a 0.96 GAA with seven shutouts. Wojtkun
was an Honorable Mention All-USA South
pick, named to the All-Tournament Team
and was also a Second Team All-State pick.
Joining Wotjkun between the pipes will be
sophomore Dineen Sampson (Kennett
Square, PA/Unionville H.S.) Sampson
saw action in three games as a freshman in
2006 and finished 1-1 with a 1.20 GAA.
DEFENDERS
VA/Western Albemarle H.S.).
Conheeney, Fleming and Nuesch will all see some time at forward.
Fleming comes from a Lake Braddock squad that won back-to-back
state championships.
FORWARDS
With 29 total players on his roster, Lloyd has a ton of depth at every
position and forward is no different. Lloyd has eight forwards and
four others who can also play the striker position. Gone is last year's
leading scorer, Jackie Trono, who scored 13 goals and finished with
33 points.
The top returning forward from a year ago is Amanda Peters
(Alexandria, VA/Edison H.S.). Peters, who also saw some time in
the midfield a year ago, was a Second Team All-Conference choice.
Peters scored five goals and added five
assists. Also returning is Joanna Pollak
(Midlothian, VA/Midlothian H.S.). Pollak
missed the last half of the year in 2006
after sustaining an injury. Sophomore Jenn
Campbell (Springfield, VA/Robert E. Lee
H.S.) who scored three goals and had seven points, will also be looked up to provide
an offensive spark. But do not be surprised
if one of the incoming freshman gets a start
or comes off the bench. With only two true
forwards returning, look for Lloyd to rely on
the newcomers some.
Newcomers Shaynna Ford (Stafford,
VA/Brooke Point H.S.), Becca Grady
(Springfield, VA/South County H.S.),
Katie Eacho (New Kent, VA/New Kent
H.S.), Sam Ciaravino (Burke, VA/Lake
Braddock H.S.) and Britta McDonnell
(Doylestown, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy) will all provide depth off the bench for
Lloyd.
Last year's defense was definitely one of
the best defensive units in school history.
The backline allowed 20 goals in 20 games.
Gone are Ashley Glover and Hillary Carney
(though Carney did spend some time in the
midfield and at forward in 2006). Both were
First Team All-Conference picks last year.

score. Sophomore Brittany Revels (Spotsylvania, VA/Spotsylvania

points while Betoney finished with six goals and 14 points.
Six freshmen will see time in the midfield, indicating how much depth
this team will have this year. New to the squad is Hannah Perry

Head Coach Kwame Lloyd
Three phrases are synonymous with Head Coach Kwame Lloyd: Hard work, discipline
and winning. Lloyd has instilled all three into his players in his six seasons as head coach at
Christopher Newport.
2002 was his first winning season at CNU, and the school's third, when the Lady Captains
finished 12-4-1 and 6-0 in the Dixie Conference (now USA South). That year was also the
first time in the program's history that the team went undefeated in conference play and won
a regular season conference championship. Lloyd was also named Conference Coach of the
Year.
2003 was another successful season for the program. Lloyd led his squad to a 15-6
record overall and 7-1 in the USA South. The Lady Captains finished in a tie for first in
conference play. For the second consecutive season, CNU was beaten in the conference
tournament via penalty kicks.
2004 was the most successful for CNU in the program's short history. Lloyd led his squad
to a 16-4-3 overall record and 7-0 in the USA South. He was named conference Coach of
the Year for the second time in his first four seasons. Lloyd was also named Virginia Sports
Information Director's College Division Coach of the Year. He also led the Lady Captains
to the program's second conference tournament championship and a spot in the NCAA
Tournament. CNU advanced all the way to the Elite 8 and lost to eventual national champion,
Wheaton (IL). Other than track, only four other CNU teams have advanced that far in NCAA
play. The 2000 men's soccer team and 2000-2001 men's basketball team both reached the
quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. The baseball team finished third in 2002 and runnerup in 2003. The field hockey team reached that level in 2006.
He followed up 2004's success with another fantastic year. A 14-5-1 record, a perfect
6-0-0 in the USA South and captured the regular season and conference tournament crowns
and a bid into the NCAA Tournament. His team

Lloyd was named head coach on April 18,
2001. He became the fourth head coach in
program history and is now the longest tenured
coach in the program's history.
He joined the CNU staff following four years as the Director of Soccer, men's and women's soccer coach, and women's lacrosse coach at Whittier College in Whittier, California.
In addition to his duties as women's soccer coach at Christopher Newport, Lloyd also
serves as head women's lacrosse coach.
Lloyd, a Queens, NY native, grew up in Silver Spring,
MD. He is a 1993 graduate of Susquehanna University in
Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, with a degree in Political Science. He played soccer and also ran track while a student
at Susquehanna.
In 1994, Lloyd began his coaching career at his alma
mater and guided the women's soccer program from
1994 to 1997.
Prior to the start of his coaching career, Lloyd played
on the Harrisburg Heat of the National Professsional Soccer League in 1993 and 1994.
Lloyd is also a member of the National Soccer
Coaches Association of America, from which he earned a
National Diploma. He has also been featured in some of
the top soccer camps in the area, including the University
of Virginia and William & Mary. He has also been a staff
member of the April Heinrichs Soccer School since 1997,
the only Division III coach involved with that camp.
Lloyd, his wife Julie and son Kijana, reside in Newport
News.

Assistant Coaches
Lydia Scrofani
Lydia Scrofani joins Lloyd for her first season at CNU. Scrofani
spent three seasons as an assistant for John Daly at William &
Mary from 2004-2007. Prior to that, she spent two seasons as an
assistant at Fairleigh Dickinson - Teaneck.
Scrofani played four years at the University of South Carolina
where she was named team captain for two seasons and was a
NSCAA Regional All-American as well as a Soccer Buzz AllAmerican.
Hillary Carney
Also joining Lloyd is former CNU standout Hillary Carney. Carney
played three seasons for Lloyd and totaled 15 goals and 13
assists. She had her most successful offensive season in 2006
where she compiled 11 goals and six helpers. In 2006, Carney
was named 2nd Team All-Region by D3kicks.com and was a
Third Team choice by the National Soccer Coaches Association of

The History of the USA South
The Dixie Conference, now known as the USA South Athletic Conference, was formed in 1963 when six schools with similar philosophies
of academics and athletics joined as the founding members. These
colleges were: Charlotte College (presently UNC Charlotte), College of
Charleston (S.C.), Methodist College, Lynchburg College, North Carolina Wesleyan College and St. Andrews Presbyterian College. The basis
of the new athletic conference was that participation would be strictly
amateur, thus no athletically related financial aid or athletic scholarships
would be awarded. This philosophy still exists today.
The conference was originally affiliated with the National Association
of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and remained with that affiliation
until 1973. At that time the NCAA formed the Division III concept, which
allowed membership only for non-athletic scholarship schools. The Dixie
Conference joined this new arrangement, and in so doing, it became
one of the first conferences to be accepted in Division III. From the
beginning of the Division, the Dixie Conference has been a leader in
many areas, and has gained an outstanding reputation, regionally and
nationally.
The conference sponsored athletic programs for men students only
until 1983. The NCAA expanded its sponsorship to include women’s
programs on the Division III level in that year, and the Dixie Conference
followed that lead by also including women’s sports. Many of the members’ teams have gained excellent recognition in these sports.
Each year the conference not only recognizes the participants for
outstanding athletic achievements, but academic achievements are also
emphasized. Those student athletes who maintain academic averages
of 3.0 or better are named to the All-Academic team. This group annually averages nearly 400 in number.
The conference is presently led by Commissioner Rita Wiggs and
President Bob McEvoy, of Methodist College.

From Western Virginia
Depending upon your location travel to I-81 North until it meets I-64 East
and then follow I-64 around Richmond (you may elect to take the by-pass
I-295 in case of heavy traffic in downtown Richmond. Then take I 64 East.
Exit at Exit 258 A (Route 17 South, J. Clyde Morris Blvd). Continue on J.
Clyde Morris Blvd. to Warwick Blvd. Go straight ahead and follow the directions in the top paragraph beginning with Avenue of the Arts.
If you are nearer to U.S. 58, take it East until it meets I-664 heading toward
the Monitor Merrimack Bridge Tunnel. Cross the tunnel into Newport News
and take Exit 5 to 35th Street and Warwick Blvd. (Route 60 West). After
about five miles on Warwick Blvd. (Route 60) make a left turn on Avenue of
the Arts. Follow that to a traffic circle and go 3/4 of the way around to Shoe
La. Make the first right turn, on Moore’s La., to the parking area.

NCAA 2000, 2004, 2005, 2006
Few, if any, Division III schools have
had the overall success of the Christopher Newport athletic program.
Through the end of the 2005-06
season, CNU teams had won 12
national championships, either won
or shared 140 conference titles and
have produced an amazing number
of individual accomplishments.
CNU athletes have won All-America
recognition an amazing 506 times
and have captured 63 individual
national championships.
In the USA South Athletic Conference, CNU has won nine consecutive
President’s Cups and 13 of the last
22. Statewide, in Virginia, Christopher Newport has had the best wonloss record of any school in the state
for six of the last nine years.
Nationally, CNU teams have made
52 NCAA appearances since 1982,
not counting hundreds of individuals
in track, cross country and golf.

Fast Facts
Christopher Newport University is a
small, selective public university. It
offers baccalaureate programs through
its College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
and the Joseph W. Luter, III School of

Location
CNU’s 260-acre campus is located in
Newport News, Va., two and a half

improvements. Recent additions
include state-of-the-art residential
facilities, a $16 million sports and convocation center, the new Ferguson
Center for the Arts, and residential

History
Founded in 1960 as a two-year branch
of the College of William and Mary,
CNU became independent in 1977 and
gained university status in 1991. Today,
CNU is the youngest comprehensive
university in the Commonwealth.
Ferguson Center for the Arts
The $60 million Ferguson Center for
the Arts is the crowning jewel of
Christopher Newport University.
Teaching and learning are celebrated in
the 1,700-seat Concert Hall, 440-seat

lighting labs and set design studios.
The Center’s inaugural season, which
began in September 2005, included
world-class classical, pop, Broadway
and dance performances, attracting
more than 120,000 patrons and ticket
revenue in excess of $3.2 million.
Class Size
With an average class size of 25 students, CNU has much smaller classes
than most state universities. More than
90 percent of classes are seminars, and
no classes are taught by graduate teaching assistants.
Athletics
CNU athletes compete in 21 NCAA
sports, including football, lacrosse and
sailing. The University ranks fifth
nationally in NCAA Division III Team
Championships, and the school has
produced 500 All-Americans.

of Christopher Newport University.
A dramatic transformation spanning the past decade has placed it
among the United States’ pre-eminent liberal arts universities.

CNU is getting better, not bigger.
CNU offers an unbeatable combination of great teaching, small
classes and a commitment to
placing students first, which
means that the quality of teaching,
advising and student life is the
University’s first concern. Classes
average only 25 students, and are
taught by faculty members – 85
percent of which hold a doctorate
or the highest degree in their field
– not teaching assistants.
These scholars desire to engage
and challenge students inside and
outside the classroom and are
committed to playing an active
role in campus life.
