RECENT EVENTS
LGA Net Championship
The OCC Ladies took to the links May 19-20 for the LGA Net
Championship with six competitors in the field. Day one finished with
a two-way tie for the lead as Phyllis Herring and Genon Krivohlavek
both carded a net 67. Jatana Norris was next with a net 72.
On day two, the outcome was not determined until the last hole as
#18 lived up to its billing as "Most Challenging Finishing Hole in the
Midlands." After the dust had settled and golf balls cleared the pond,
Genon came out with a two-stroke victory and the championship
trophy. Phyllis claimed second place and the Pewter Cup while Jatana
finished third to earn a golf shop gift certificate.
Golf balls were also awarded for the low round each day as Genon and
Phyllis tied on day one. Salley Hewett took home the prize on day two.
Congratulations to all the winners!
15 kids, so please sign up your child/grandchild as soon as possible. If
your child/grandchild is not able to attend the June camp, we will have

Annual Independence Day Flag Tournament
The popular annual flag tournament is back on Saturday, July 4!
Players will use their handicap plus par (72) to see how far they can
advance and plant their American flag! The entry fee is $10 with Golf
Shop credit as prizes. Sign up on the day of play in the Golf Shop!
Men's Club Championship
The OCC Men's Club Championship will be played Saturday, July 18
and Sunday, July 19. The format is 36 holes of stroke play with the field
divided into three (3) divisions: Men, Senior Men (55-64), and Super
Seniors (65+). Men will play from the Blue Tees, Seniors will play from
the Black Tees and Super Seniors will play from the Gold Tees. Prizes
will be awarded for low gross and low net. The entry fee is $30 per
person. Cart fees are an additional cost.
Lightning Safety
Golfer safety is one of our main priorities during the summer storm
season. We subscribe to a notification service that alerts us when
lightning is in the area and how far it is from OCC. When lightning is
within 10 miles, there will be one long siren blast. If you hear a siren
while on the course, please seek shelter immediately. If possible, golfers
should go to the Clubhouse or cart storage building. We appreciate
your attention to this important safety matter.

Blitz Time Change
With the arrival of the hot weather of summer, the Wednesday and
Friday blitzes are moving to 9am.
From the Green
June brings the summer growing season into full swing. We
just finished the first of our two greens aerifications during the
summer. Due to this process, we had to close the back nine for
part of the day on Tuesday, June 1. Fortunately, everything went
smoothly. Thanks to everyone for their cooperation.
The spring transition is almost complete. We have had a good
transition from the overseeded Rye back to Bermuda. The spring
weather was less than ideal. However, the temperatures were
warm enough to allow the Bermuda to fill in. We will continue
to push the Bermuda until late summer. We have enough time
remaining in the growing season so the Bermuda will rebound.
This will allow it to be as healthy as it can be heading into
overseeding again.
The Bella
-3 Large Raspberries (muddle in an Old Fashioned Glass with simple
Syrup and Lemon Juice)
-Simple Syrup
-One wedge of Lemon Juice
-2 oz. Bourbon (I use Woodford Reserve®)
-2 dashes of Black Walnut Bitters
-Splash of Ginger Ale.
Funding for turfgrass research has been reduced over the past
decade. The Carolina’s Superintendent Association started a
program to help raise money that has now gone nationwide known
as Rounds4Research. From June 8-21 (just in time for Father's
Day), there will be an online auction for tee times at courses in
the Carolinas and across the country. The money generated from
the auction goes directly to Clemson and N.C. State for turfgrass
research. This research is vital for all superintendents to continue
to provide the best possible playing conditions.
The Revolver
-1.5 oz. Bourbon or Whiskey (to taste)
-.5 oz. Coffee Liqueur
-2 dashes of Angostura® Orange Bitters
Chilled and strained over ice into a chilled cocktail glass.
If you’d like to taste one of these cocktails or any other bitters
inspired cocktail, pop into the bar before or after dinner at the
Blackwater Grille!
Please visit www.rounds4research.com for more information.
- Alex Tolbert, Greens Superintendent.
If you’d like to know more about bitters, feel free to visit me at the
bar or shoot me an e-mail: [email protected].
ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE POLICY
As a reminder, OCC’s policy and state law requires that all
alcoholic beverages consumed on OCC property (including the
golf course) must be purchased from OCC. The sole exception is
that members are more than welcome to bring their own bottle
of wine when dining at the Blackwater Grille or Bar and pay a
corkage fee. We have also decided, after careful consideration,
that OCC will no longer dispense shots of alcohol to any member
and/or guest. We thank you in advance for you and your guests
full cooperation in complying with these rules.

From the Bar
The Right Beer with the Right Food
By Cope Hayden, OCC Bartender
Recently, a bar patron asked me what I was pouring in her drink
when she saw me grab a small, goofy looking bottle. The bottle
she was referring to happened to be Angostura® Bitters. Originally
sold as tonics and medicines by shady traveling doctors, these
spirits have been around for ages. Created and bottled in Trinidad,
Angostura is the world’s most popular bitters.
Odds are that you have imbibed more bitters than you know! If
you have ever enjoyed a properly made Manhattan, Bloody Mary,
Bourbon Lancer or Moscow Mule then you have tasted a bitters
of one type or another. Bitters are extremely aromatic and it never
takes more than one or two dashes to change the flavor of any drink.
Also, if you have ever had a bad case of the hiccups while sitting at
a bar, it’s likely that your bartender has offered you a slice of lemon
with bitters to suck on. It works!
At the OCC Bar, I like to use Angostura® Classic Bitters, Angostura®
Orange Bitters and Fae Brother’s® Black Walnut Bitters. The
following are a couple of my favorite drinks that hinge on the
addition of quality bitters.

cookout featuring hamburgers and hot dogs. The OCC Pool is an ideal venue to host birthday parties, after-hours business events, family
reunions or social gatherings with a zero-entry pool and an array of catering and beverage options.
2015 Edisto Clemson Club Outing
