Welcome
It gives me much pleasure to welcome you to the second annual
Philanthropreneurship Forum. We are honoured to be joined
by a distinguished roster of luminaries who have donated their time
and effort as co-chairs for this year’s event.
I am personally indebted to the friendship and guidance
of our co-chairs including Doug Band, Professor Rajesh Chandy,
Her Excellency Rachida Dati, Paul Polman, Liz Robbins,
Princess Corinna zu Sayn-Wittgenstein and Dr. Laura Tyson.
Building on last year’s successful launch, we have once again
gathered luminaries from around the world to gather in one space
and explore what we are calling, The New Frontiers of Philanthropy.
This year saw the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals
and we see the Forum as an ideal place to convene, collaborate
and work together to deliver on these ambitious and needed goals.
Our aim remains the same - to shift philanthropy from its current
traditional space to one where philanthropy is blended with
entrepreneurialism, creativity and innovation to address three
main areas - to create a bigger impact, to ensure sustainability and
to deliver scalable ideas and solutions. Our methods however,
must continue to evolve and we look forward to witnessing part
of the evolution during our annual gathering.
We hope you enjoy the day ahead and look forward to many more
occasions for us all to convene once more.
With all best,

What is
philanthropreneurship?
Philanthropreneurship is a creative and entrepreneurial approach
to philanthropy; it is giving that disrupts the status quo. A new
generation of philanthropists is stepping forward to contribute
their creativity and entrepreneurial skills in addition to their wealth
to address global challenges. Entrepreneurial philanthropists
or “philanthropreneurs” around the world are bringing their business
acumen to the world of philanthropy to help social enterprises and
not-for-profits to be more efficient and impactful.
The Philanthropreneurship Forum was established under
the leadership of His Excellency Amr Al-Dabbagh in 2014. Through
the Annual Forum, this initiative aims to foster a new generation
of philanthropreneurs and to champion new ways of thinking about
philanthropy and development.
The Philanthropreneurship Forum
The annual Philanthropreneurship Forum is a global initiative
that connects, empowers and inspires leaders from philanthropy,
civil society, academia, business and governments from
diverse sectors and regions to foster innovation and encourage
collaboration. The Forum sheds light on what it really takes
to deliver positive social impact, ensure sustainability and accelerate
scalable progress for communities around the world. The inaugural
Forum was organized in London in 2014 in partnership with London
Business School and Stars Foundation.
2015 Philanthropreneurship Forum:
Exploring “The New Frontiers of Philanthropy”
Entrepreneurial approaches to philanthropy play an increasingly
instrumental role in addressing both social and environmental
issues. These innovative dynamics of giving have been reshaping
global philanthropy and social investment in the past decade.
Together delegates will explore the opportunities, challenges and
prospects of these new approaches of philanthropy that place
innovation, creativity and impact at the heart of social progress.

Kate Silverton is a highly accomplished,
versatile and popular broadcaster.
An experienced journalist she has won
plaudits for her reporting in Iraq, and
is no stranger to conflict, having covered
several of the world’s troubled and
beleaguered regions, including reporting
from the front line in Afghanistan.
Kate regularly anchors the main Six
and Ten o'clock news bulletins for the BBC.
She also broadcasts on BBC Radio 4.
Kate is a keen conservationist and her work
in this field saw her securing an exclusive
interview with His Royal Highness,
The Duke of Cambridge who gave her
a rare and extremely candid interview
about his anger over the current levels
of rhino poaching in Africa.
Her documentary drew support and praise
from the United Nations conservation team.
Kate Silverton
Journalist and broadcaster
Kate has travelled extensively throughout
Africa and the Middle East as well
as parts of the Far East and Europe.
Her first journey saw her living on
a Kibbutz in Israel before hitch-hiking
her way across the country to meet
people living in the Palestinian Territories
- a journey that saw her shot at and
teargassed. She lived with Bedouin
in the desert in Egypt and survived
being drugged and robbed in the former
Yugoslavia. At 19 she volunteered
as a venturer with Operation Raleigh
(now Raleigh International) and travelled
to Zimbabwe where she helped build
schools, lavatories and contributed to field
studies - being charged by an elephant
and stung by a scorpion in the process!
These experiences; immersing herself
within hugely disparate cultures around
the globe; have continued to prove
the driving force for her reporting both
in the UK and abroad.
Kate attributes her love of Africa
specifically to Wilbur Smith, having read
Elephant Song and The Burning Shore
as a teenager she became an avid fan
and recently named her young son Wilbur
after the great man himself!
Kate graduated from the University
of Durham with a BSc in Psychology,
specialising in child development. Before
that she studied Islam and Arabic
and Middle Eastern history.
Kate met her husband Mike Heron,
a former Royal Marine, while on a course
training her how to cope in "hostile
environments". They have a daughter,
Clemency Florence Rose and son Wilbur
Ernest George.

Pushing the Boundaries:
The End of Philanthropy
as we know it
Through centuries of exercise, philanthropy
has set a tradition for charitable giving.
However, in the 21st century, it unfolds
in radically new conditions, as global
challenges, technological resources
and society’s preferences, open the door
to innovative practices.
Breaking with the traditional methods
of charitable giving, the philanthropreneur
community seeks to invest in smarter
ways for greater impact. This requires
developing strategic planning and
partnerships.
• Why must traditional philanthropists
reinvent themselves and why is the
philanthropreneurship model more fit
for our changing environment?
• Can the new generation of entrepreneurs
revolutionize philanthropy as they did
in business through innovative ideas
and startups?
• What does the philanthropreneur
community bring to this new world
of giving?
• What are the potential pitfalls in this
new philanthropy and how can the
philanthropreneur, through their creative
and risk-taking profile, avoid them?

Philanthropreneurs
On The Frontline
Of Achieving Global Goals
Building innovative alliances between
public sector institutions, the private
sector and local communities is crucial
to address the global development
challenges. Philanthropreneurship offers
new ways to forge these multi-stakeholder
initiatives and can efficiently enhance
collective action to reach the Sustainable
Development Goals and COP21 ambitions.
With a new range of approaches
complementing the existing philanthropic
mechanisms, philanthropreneurship is
a vehicle of choice within the current
development landscape.
• What does philanthropreneurship bring
to the current international development
agenda? What direct role
can philanthropreneurs play in achieving
the objectives set by the SDGs and
the COP21? What are the risks and
opportunities for them in this engagement?
• Can philanthropreneurs contribute
to ensure more accountability in solving
global challenges?
• What distinguishes philanthropreneurship
from other mechanisms when it comes
to addressing these global challenges?

Al-Dabbagh Group
Al-Dabbagh Group was established in 1962 on the shores of the Red Sea in Jeddah,
Saudi Arabia by His Excellency Sheikh Abdullah Al-Dabbagh.
Three principles of Giving, Earning
and Sustaining govern the ecosystem
Al-Dabbagh operates in with a 2020 goal
focused on achieving a ‘20x20’ target
across each principle, fortified
by 10 Golden Rules and governed
by five core values.
In its Giving activities, Al-Dabbagh
maintains a one-to-one ratio; for every
dollar distributed as dividend in the
Earning activities, a corresponding dollar
is donated to philanthropy. Al-Dabbagh
Group has four strategic and independent
philanthropic activities – Stars Foundation,
Philanthropy University, Game-Changing
Initiatives and the Philanthropreneurship
Forum.
In its corporate platform – which
represents the principle of Earning –
Al-Dabbagh Group is composed
of five business portfolios including Food,
Petroleum & Auto Services, Housing,
Packaging and an Incubation portfolio.
Al-Dabbagh Group and its subsidiary
companies currently employ in excess
of 15,000 people globally representing
53 nationalities. The Group includes
62 companies; with manufacturing
presence in 35 countries and sales,
services and projects in over 60 countries
and with ever expanding horizons
as we move towards 2020.
Al-Dabbagh Group aims to be ranked
amongst the top 20 wholly-owned global
family businesses by 2020 through
the expansion of its five portfolios.
To ensure the long-term continuity
and stability of both Giving and the
Earning, Al-Dabbagh is committed
to the third principle of Sustaining – with
activities that address the shareholders,
stakeholders and the planet. The
shareholders – the family - are sustained
by the Family Protocol and Club 32,
two tools that address governance
and culture. The stakeholders –
Al-Dabbagh Group colleagues –
are addressed through the Be Well
program and the subsidiary Group
companies have a suite of sustainable
activities that address our environmental
footprint.

Stars Foundation
Founded in 2001 by Al-Dabbagh Group
and based in London, Stars Foundation
is an independent charity investing
in organisations and ideas that transform
the lives of disadvantaged children
and their communities globally.
Stars Foundation's Award programmes
support strong locally-led civil society
organisations responding to the needs
of underserved children. Stars offers
its awardees flexible funding, capacity
building support and helps them amplify
their messages to broaden their visibility
and to access other sector leaders and
funders.
To date, Stars has awarded 127 outstanding
community-based organisations in more
than 30 countries, working with nearly
5 million people.
Stars has committed to reach 20 million
people by 2020 – a pledge cemented
by our Founding Chairman His Excellency
Amr Al-Dabbagh at the Clinton Global
Initiative in 2012.
Stars is also supporting Al-Dabbagh Group
companies as they launch their GameChanging Initiatives (GCI) to innovate
and invest in the products and ideas
that will help change the world.
By bringing together philanthropy,
business and centres of research
and technical expertise, this programme
will help contribute to Stars’ long-term
goals of improving the lives of children.
Philanthropy University
Philanthropy University is built on a single
audacious idea – to provide millions
of non-profits and NGOs around the world
access to unlimited capacity building.
This is strategic philanthropy at its best seeing a need and then building
a completely new solution to deliver what’s
required.
It is clear our world is facing a daunting
number of challenges. But it is also clear
that these problems are being addressed
in creative ways by millions of non-profits,
NGOs and social impact enterprises that
have the potential to support billions
of people in need.
Yet too often, it is not a lack of compelling
mission or powerful vision that impedes
these organizations’ effectiveness. Instead,
it is the huge gaps in capacity- from
leadership to strategy to fundraising
to evaluation- preventing organizations
from being able to scale, sustain and drive
long-term impact.
Philanthropy University is a state-of-theart approach to building the capacity and
growing the skills of social sector leaders
seeking to build a better world.
Philanthropy University offers
an innovative learning platform through
which hundreds of thousands of leaders
across the globe access free, online
courses. Courses are taught by world-class
instructors and designed by a cuttingedge curriculum committee. Philanthropy
University offers, a vibrant community
for social change leaders to grow their
networks.
With more than 400,000 enrolments
in its first cycle, representing learners
from 180 countries, Philanthropy University
aims to impact 100 million lives by 2020
by training hundreds of thousands of social
sector leaders to broaden their reach
and deepen their impact.
Philanthropy University is a non-degree or diploma granting program.
Learners are not entitled to college or other academic credit.
