Explore French River
It’s as old as time, carving its way through boreal
forest and the precambrian shield. It’s history
cascading across the centuries. In Ojibway it is
Wemitigoj-Sibi. Early French explorers called it la
Rivière des français.
We call it, “The French”
The French has been a thread in the fabric of our
history since before the first explorers arrived and
braved her turbulent waters on route to the northwest
interior. An ancient waterway and vital transportation
link for natives and non-natives alike. As part of the
‘Voyageur’s Highway’ missionaries, fur-traders and
explorers used The French to connect to thousands of
miles of water linking East and West.
The French was an economic and strategic part of life
for those dealing in trade. Thirty-six foot long birch
bark canoes headed West in spring and made their
way back to Montreal in early autumn with up to three
tons of cargo.
Modern explorers of all ages delight in experiencing
The French. The mighty waters still flow. The scenery
remains captivating. The outdoor opportunities are
unequalled, the area unparalleled and world class.
The French is calling, come, answer the call.

FISHING
For many visitors to the The French, dropping anchor
and dropping a fishing line go hand in hand. Northern
Pike, Muskie and Bass are the catch of choice. All
three offer spirited challenges for anglers.
Lodges, outfitters, marinas, suppliers, guides and
everything else you’ll need for your fishing vacation is
available at numerous locations throughout The French.
Whether fishing our river or area lakes, your every
need can be accommodated. Don’t forget to have your
Ministry of Natural Resources Outdoor Card on hand.
While here, be sure to enjoy a shore lunch. Nothing
beats the aroma and taste of fresh catch coupled with
other local delights.
HUNTING
Hunting is part of the local history and area culture. From
small game to waterfowl, grouse and partridge, to big
game like moose, deer and black bear, The French offers
hunters a diverse selection. Gun and non-gun hunting
is available and hunters are always welcome. Ontario
hunting regulations and required outdoor cards are
available online through the Ministry of Natural Resources.
With an abundance of wildlife, hunters are certain to
see evidence of their prey. Local restaurants, lodges
and outfitters welcome the opportunity to assist and
to make your stay awesome.

FRENCH RIVER
TRAVEL and TOURISM GUIDE
Explore Dokis
The Dokis First Nation is comprised of two large
islands located 16 kilometers southwest of Lake
Nipissing on the clean fresh waters of the French
River. Dokis is a short 25 kilometre drive off highway
64 at the junction of the Districts of Parry Sound,
Sudbury and Nipissing. The main settlement is
located on the Northern, Okikendawt Island, meaning
island of buckets. The name is derived from area
formations caused by ancient water flows.
In total, more than 39,000 acres make up this historic
land. The Southern portion of Dokis is generally used
for traditional purposes such as hunting, fishing,
camping and hiking. The beautiful landscapes and the
enticing waters of the French River make the Dokis
First Nation an excellent spot for travelers seeking a
tranquil spot.
The community is close knit with a growing
population. The people of the Dokis Tribe have a rich
history of fur trading with early European settlers.
Lumbering and fishing have also been local economic
drivers. Profits from area enterprises helped to build
community places of worship and gathering. By the
1950s a road was built to connect Dokis Village with
the outside world.
The Tikibi Trail, the Chaudiere Trail and the Papase
Trail provide visitors with opportunities to experience
nature, wildlife, the majesty of the upper and lower
French River and the grandeur of the area. The trails
are well maintained and provide several spots where
trekkers can rest, enjoy a picnic lunch and breathe
in the beauty. The Chaudiere Trail, for example,
connects the upper and lower French River via a
network of walkways and a 100 foot bridge. Visitors
will enjoy the Chaudiere and the Cradle rapids.
Cottages, lodges, and marinas, provide
accommodation, meals and spots to launch your
watercraft. The Dokis Pow-Wow and the Dokis
Summerfest are community highlights and visitors are
always welcome.
