Advisory Board of Governors Update,
Guest Column by Social Committee Chair, Jan Cullinane
Ah, it’s almost Spring, when thoughts turn to…the Member Survey! Yes, the annual ritual where
you are asked lots of questions, are given the opportunity to win great prizes by submitting
your survey (particularly if you turn it in early), and can enjoy the opportunity to compliment,
curse, or constructively critique what goes on at the Club.
The ABOG needs and values your thoughts! I can tell you, having been associated with ABOG for a number of years both as a committee
member and chair of two different committees, that your responses are important and have resulted in meaningful changes at the Club. Each
year, the Member Relations committee, comprised of Club members and Marianne Murphy, review and tweak the survey. Over the past few
years we’ve simplified, shortened, and provided opportunities for more open-ended responses. The results are tabulated and studied by both
Management and the ABOG, and a LOT of attention is paid to the comments made by members. I can assure you that every comment is read.
What do we do with the information? Here are some specifics. We’ve hired bands based on members’ suggestions (some submissions
even included the bands’ websites, an extra plus), added off-campus events, monitored tea more closely for attendance and removal of
plates of food, created the Quarterly Member Activity Booklet based on requests by non-resident members for more advance notice of
events (we also thought this was good for resident members as well). Difficulty using our former website resulted in our new and intuitive
Club website, and questions such as “What the heck is the Club’s concierge service?” made us realize we sometimes refer to things that
many people don’t know what we’re talking about, and that we need to communicate better and more frequently. These are just a few
examples. Often the wheels turn verrryyyyy slowly, but changes have resulted from your taking the time to complete the survey.
So, as the days lengthen and the weather gets warmer, please don’t hit “delete” when you see the survey. Take some time to give us
your feedback. It’s not in vain, your responses are important, and they do make a difference.

Dear Club Members:
Last month, the Club at Hammock Beach had 20 employees nominated for the 2016 Rose Awards
Program, a recognition program sponsored by the North Florida Hotel & Lodging Association
(NFHLA). The NFHLA covers the hospitality industry in the five counties of Flagler, St. Johns, Duval,
Nassau and Clay. Hotels and resorts, clubs, airlines, car rental and transportation companies and
area attractions nominated their top performing employees.
Please join me in congratulating all of our Rose Awards recipients! We also have a
winner from our Concierge department, Amanda Corcoran. Congratulations Amanda,
we are proud of you!
Please see below the list of nominations for this prestigious award. When you see
these employees around the Club, please congratulate them and let them know
how much they are appreciated - to us, they are all winners!

The New Fundamentals of Golf
By Wes Altice Stack and Tilt Network Instructor/TPI Certified Golf Instructor/Coach.
What are the fundamentals of golf? The most common answers to this question are Grip, Posture, Alignment, etc. While these
“fundamentals” are important, if you look at the best players in the world, they all differ in these “fundamentals”. Let’s look at the
Grip and Posture among the best players in the world.
A fundamental should link all the best players the game has ever seen from any decade or generation. If you look at the spectrum above, you will quickly
notice each of the championship golfers do NOT grip the club the same way nor do they have same postures.
You are probably asking yourself, “What are the fundamentals then?”. The answer has nothing to do with static positions in your set up or hitting certain
positions in your swing.
The 3 fundamentals the best players that have ever played this game have in common are:
#1 - They hit the ground in the same place every time.
#3 - They have a predictable shot pattern (curvature).
#2 - They have enough power to play the golf course.
We will address the first fundamental in this article (hitting the ground in the same place every time). The final two fundamentals will be addressed in the
upcoming newsletters (April and May).
The first piece that allows a golfer to hit the same place every time is where the weight and handle is at impact. The best players in the world have their
weight the most forward at impact (approx. 85% to 90% depending on the club being used) with the handle leaning ahead of the hands.
Here is a great drill to help you feel the weight forward with a forward leaning handle at impact;
1. First set up to a golf ball with 80% of your weight on your front foot, straighten your trail leg so your trail hip is slightly higher than your lead hip
and press the handle forward so it lines up with inside of your lead thigh.
2. Take your backswing to a point when your lead arm is parallel to the ground while still maintaining the weight on your lead foot with a straight trail leg.
3. During the downswing all the way to impact, increase the amount of weight on your front leg with the handle leaning forward. You will notice,
keeping your weight forward helps you make ball first contact.
4. When your trail arm is parallel to the ground, the weight will still be forward with very little weight on your trail foot.
5. Hit 10 to 15 balls in a row and then incorporate the feel you get from this drill into your full swing. You will notice your shots will be more solid with
a more consistent ball flight.

DOUBLES FORMATIONS KNOW THE BASICS
By Gene Paul Lascano, Director of Tennis
There are 3 basic court positions for doubles
in tennis: one up/one back, two up, and two
back. While each formation has its benefits,
they also have their weaknesses.
that you leave yourself open to a good lob because there is nobody
to back you up. Typically, players with effective serves, penetrating
volleys, and a good overhead find success in this formation.
Two back A more defensive formation, playing two back is always a
good option when facing opponents with good serves and aggressive net
play. It is also utilized by teams which prefer to hit their groundstrokes
instead of volleying. From the baseline, the defenders can return the
most forcing shots and not have to worry about covering a lob, but it can
also be a difficult task to be offensive with two players at the baseline
in doubles. Another downside of both players staying back is that it
leaves the front court susceptible to drop shots and short angles.
One up/one back The most common doubles formation at the club
level is the one up/one back which keeps one player standing at the
baseline and one standing at the net. The main weakness in this
formation is the large angular gap left open in the court right down
the center. The one-up/one-back formation is versatile however,
with a nice balance of offense and defense in it. It gives the net
player a chance to poach when attacking opportunities arise and
also allows the baseline player to cover lobs.
Trying to figure out which doubles formation works best for you and
your partner is not only about what skills you both possess and how
you can use them to compliment one another, but also analyzing your
opponent’s abilities and how to neutralize them. Remember the pros
and cons of these 3 formations, and it may come in handy in your
next doubles match!
Two up Two up means that both players are positioned at the net.
Also known as “attacking doubles”, having both players up at the net
not only puts pressure on your opponents, but increases the odds of
ending the point quicker since you contact the ball at a higher level
above the net. However, the main drawback of playing two up is
