RESEARCH
is at the heart of the American
Cancer Society’s mission. For more
than 65 years, the Society has
been finding answers that save
lives−from changes in lifestyle
to new approaches in therapies to improving
cancer patients’ quality of life. No single
nongovernmental, not-for-profit organization in
the US has invested more to find the causes and
cures of cancer than the American Cancer Society.
Dear Friends,
THERE IS
HOPE
t Your American Cancer Society has spent more than $3.8 billion on cancer
research to date.
t Major scientific breakthroughs have changed how we think about cancer. The
5-year relative survival rate for all cancers diagnosed between 2002 and
2008 is 68%, up from 49% in 1975-1977.
t As of 2009, the overall death rate for cancer in the United States has declined
20% from its peak in 1991, translating to the avoidance of approximately 1.2
million deaths from cancer, 152,900 of these in 2009 alone.
CANCER RESEARCH
BREAKTHROUGHS
THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY HAS BEEN BEHIND NEARLY EVERY RECENT
CANCER BREAKTHROUGH, INCLUDING:
t Pap smear crusade to detect cervical cancer
t Mammography to screen for breast cancer
t PSA test for prostate cancer screening
t Confirmation of smoking as a cause of lung cancer
t Identification of obesity as an increased risk factor for multiple cancer types
t Use of small molecule inhibitors such as Gleevec for treatment of chronic
myeloid leukemia
AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY NOBEL LAUREATES
The American Cancer Society is proud of the 46 investigators we supported before they
went on to win the Nobel Prize, considered the highest accolade any scientist can receive.
This is a tribute to the American Cancer Society Research Program and the strength of its
peer-review process.
The Great West Division is honored to be home to four of these Nobel Laureates:
t 1989 - Thomas R. Cech, PhD for the discovery of catalytic properties of RNA; Colorado
t 1990 - E. Donnall Thomas, MD, the father of bone marrow transplantation;
Washington
t 2001 - Leland H. Hartwell, PhD for his discoveries of key regulators of the cell cycle;
Washington
t 2007 - Mario R. Capecchi, PhD for discoveries that led to a technology known as gene
testing; Utah
THANK YOU
FOR MAKING A DIFFERENCE!
I’m thrilled to welcome you to the American Cancer Society Hope Invitational golf
tournament. On behalf of the American Cancer Society (ACS) and Unum, I am honored
and privileged to serve as the Executive Chair for this distinguished event.
Almost 5 years ago, my father lost his battle to cancer at the age of 64. Seeing the impact firsthand that cancer can
have on a loved one, I am committed to doing everything possible to help ACS’s mission to help finish the fight
against cancer! In addition, I’m fortunate to work for a company that is a proud sponsor of ACS and is focused on
education and prevention for our employees, policyholders and their loved ones.
While last year marked the 100th Birthday for ACS, this year is also special as it marks the 10th Anniversary of
the Hope Invitational. We are excited to continue what has always been a “best in class” event here in Colorado.
Through your sponsorships, you enable the American Cancer Society to pursue its goal of $175,000 for the Hope
Invitational. The goal I love the most, however, is ACS wanting to be an organization that someday is “out of
business,” once the fight to eliminate cancer has been won and millions of lives have been saved!
The 2015 Hope Invitational will once again be held at one of Colorado’s premier golf venues, Colorado Golf Club
in Parker. As the site of the 2010 Senior PGA Championship and 2013 Solheim Cup, this venue assures a first class
experience for our sponsors and their guests. I’ll never forget my first Hope Invitational three years ago!
Please join Unum and me at this year’s Hope Invitational. It is sure to be a great day for a wonderful cause. In
partnership with ACS, we will continue to work relentlessly to save lives and create a world with less cancer.
Together, we help people stay well and get well, find cures, and fight back against cancer.

20 1 5 Ladies Hope Invitational
Monday, June 8, 2015 | Colorado Golf Club
The Inaugural American Cancer Society Ladies Hope Invitational was a hit! Our guests learned how
we “tee it up” and fight cancer in a significant way. This year, help us work to “finish the fight” and
save even more lives. As the official sponsor of birthdays, we are working hard to help everyone
celebrate more birthdays.
The new Ladies Hope Golf Committee is planning this exceptional day of golf for women only at the
beautiful Colorado Golf Club! There will be two different 9-hole rounds – one in the morning and one in
the afternoon. A golf clinic will be available for all golfers as well as a great lunch and program at the
club. Join the Lunch Bunch and participate in the clinic and luncheon only if you like.
After our round (or clinic depending on the schedule you select), everyone will return to the clubhouse
for awards, have the opportunity to learn more about the American Cancer Society, our programs and
resources, and connect with others. A main goal of this event will be to raise awareness for women’s
cancer issues. Speakers may include researchers, local survivors and others from the Denver community
passionate to find a cure.
Sponsorship and underwriting opportunities are limitless, but don’t delay! Top sponsorships and all
foursomes will sell out soon. Opportunities are listed below:
• Presenting Sponsor $10,000
• Clinic Sponsor $5,000
• Ladies Foursomes $1,000
