Congratulations to Prof Keith Hyde….
Consultant Clinical Scientist &
Director of
Laboratory Haematology / Deputy
Clinical Director of Laboratory
Medicine, Keith Hyde, has been
awarded a personal chair at the
Manchester
Metropolitan University in recognition
of his work in Manchester, Nationally
(UKNEQAS(H) and
Internationally (WHO).
Congratulations
Professor Hyde!
Sheila Cooke joined the Haematology laboratories in 1968
and soon developed a keen interest in coagulation. Sheila
married Glen Fildes in 1980 and became a Senior BMS in
1989. Her Haematology expertise, knowledge and positive
approach to people made her a valuable and popular
member
of
the
department. Equally valuable was her wicked sense of
humour. Many staff will also be aware of Sheila and Glen’s
interest in operatics and musicals. Sheila played many a
leading lady and colleagues were kept entertained by the
rehearsals as singing could regularly be heard across the
laboratory. Sheila chose to retire in October and after a
holiday in Cyprus plans are afoot to move house.

Get help to quit smoking
If you are trying to give up smoking, the Trust provides access to a free and
confidential
smoking cessation clinic which is open to all staff. The drop-in
clinic runs every Tuesday from 9—12
in the Occupational Health Physiotherapy Room at the MRI.
Free or discounted nicotine replacement therapy products and other support
are available at the clinic. Jenny Miles of the Manchester Stop Smoking
Service runs the clinic and you can contact her on 0161 205 5998for
information or help.
Elaine
Crosdale
Stuart Goldstone
ran his own business
before setting out on a new career in 1981 when
he joined the Haematology Specimen Reception
team as a clerical officer on a “youth” training
scheme at the tender age of 37. With a move to
become a Haematology BMS, Stuart went on day
release with other trainees and attained state
registration in 1986. Later as a Senior BMS
helped manage day to day operation of the
phlebotomy team. Stuart always had an interest
in people and was staff side representative for
many years, he volunteered to be part of the
Agenda for Change process and was later
seconded to Human Resources to work full time
with the Agenda for Change team before retiring
October 2007. Stuart intends to travel after
treating himself to a big, shiny red car.
Elaine started her career working at Wicks
Liquid Egg plant analysing… liquid egg! After
18 months she moved over to Edwards Meat
processing plant where she met her husband
Dave Crosdale. Then after embarking on some
evening classes she made herself an
opportunity to work in the Microbiology lab at
Manchester University. In 1973 she had her
first child and took some deserved time off,
then returned to work in the Virology lab at
MRI.
“During my working life with Elaine her
outstanding qualities have always been her
total devotion to the Lab with which she has
spent 41 years of her life. Elaine has cared for
and raised a loving family as well as also being
the backbone of the Blackley and North
Manchester Running Club.”
Pat Zukowskyj our Directorate
Manager is leaving us on the 31st
of January 2008 to take up a new
post at Trafford Hospital as
Associate Director for Diagnostics.
This covers not only Pathology, but
also X-ray, the Cardiorespiratory
Department, and the Cancer
tracking Team.
Pat joined the Directorate of Laboratory Medicine (DLM) in June
2004 and was appointed by Elliot Brown, the Divisional Manager,
and Professor Hyde, Clinical Director of Laboratory Medicine. She
was previously Pathology Manager at Bolton. Since April 2006 I
have worked with her as Clinical Director. The DLM Manager role is
a challenging one and involves responsibility for the delivery of all
the Directorate services, managing the staff and budgets through
the Laboratory Managers.
Pat represents the DLM on several other Trust wide committees,
and has been closely involved with the networking of Healthcare
Scientists across all the hospitals in Greater Manchester, and the
development of the Foundation Degree in Healthcare Science. She
has always been passionate about staff development and
progression. She was also a founder member of the Pathology
Managers’ Forum for Greater Manchester. Pat is an active member
of several of the Greater Manchester Pathology Network Board
Action Groups, and I am sure we will continue to meet with her in
this capacity.
I will remember Pat for three things:
• She is an excellent organiser and administrator and is
well known for being “Paperless Pat” with her PDA in
hand to record minutes and events
• Pat was always keen to discuss issues directly with the
staff and her innovative approach “Pat and donuts” was
very successful.
• Pat is an enthusiastic singer and has travelled the world
with a select choir from Bolton. However, we have never
heard a single note from her in the Directorate!
On behalf of all of her colleagues in our Directorate may I
wish her every success in her new job.
Prof. Eric Bolton
Karen Sneade

Immunology
Karen Sneade will be leaving Immunology at the end of
2007 after over 22 years of service to the
department.Karen came here in 1985 as a Junior B
MLSO and she has been a Chief BMS since 1990.
Needless to say Karen will be greatly missed by all of
her colleagues not only for her extensive knowledge of
Immunology but also for all the help and support she
has provided over the years. We all wish her good luck
with her new job and hope her new daily commute
between Macclesfield and Stoke improves her Work
Life Balance.
