3RD SUNDAY OF EASTER
Wrestling & God
If one were to use a sports analogy for
Easter Sunday, one may be tempted to
say that it is the Super Bowl of
solemnities. I would dismiss that
particular event because football has an
off season, where the Church does not. I would say that it
is more like “Wrestlemania” of solemnities, because
professional wrestling (WWE) has no off-season. After
Wrestlemania, they are at it again the next night on
“Monday Night Raw.” With the Church, we celebrate
Easter one Sunday, and we are back at it again the
following week. Now do we get the same attendance the
following Sunday? Sadly, no. The wrestling analogy
works. Wrestlers process in to music for their match.
When they are working the microphone, they have
certain catch-phrases that the audience know and repeats
or chants, audience participation is encouraged. All
throughout the year there are both minor and major payper-views that accentuates the stories they are telling or
the aspects of those stories. They have a Hall of Fame, and
those inducted are ones who have served the business
well. The Mass begins with a procession with music;
participation is encouraged through the saying of familiar
prayers; and all throughout the year we have solemnities
and feast days that accentuate some aspect of the life of
Christ. Of course our Hall of Fame is called the
Communion of Saints.
Yes, I am a life-long wrestling fan. (Please don’t come
up to me and tell me it is fake; I know what it is.) The
night before Wrestlemania, WWE has their Hall of
Fame induction ceremony. I was very impressed with
many of the ones inducted invoking the grace of God
for having a good career. Despite a few stories of the
wild times on the road, (the life of a wrestler can be
tough sometimes), there were many who gave God all

the credit to getting them to where they are today.
One of them was Michael P.S. Hayes. Michael Hayes
by no stretch of the imagination has lived a clean life,
and he would be the first to admit it. But in the end, he
showed his gratitude to God for all the blessings.
I remember a few years back an episode of the WWE
series “Tough Enough” (a reality show about prospective
WWE superstars) which WWE superstar Taz was
admonishing the prospects, telling them that they need
to have God in their life, because wrestling is a dangerous
business. While one can say it is fake, no one can deny
that the wrestlers take real risks of bodily harm. I
watched this last Wrestlemania. The match between
Shane McMahon (Vince McMahon’s son) and the
Undertaker was brutal. It was a “Hell in a Cell” match.
At one point in the match, they broke through the wall
of the cell and the Undertaker was lying on the top of
the announcer’s table. Shane scales to the top of the
cell, which is a good 20 feet high and leaps off to give
the Undertaker a flying elbow smash. Before he leapt,
he made the Sign of the Cross, knowing this was dangerous.
The Undertaker rolled off before Shane could hit him,
and Shane crashed through the announcers table. He is
OK, but any false move would have been disastrous.
I know the McMahon family is Catholic. After
Stephanie McMahon and Triple H had their fake
wedding on Monday Night Raw, they were eventually
married for real in the Catholic Church. There have
been a number of wrestlers from this area (some too
young) that were buried from the Church: Verne
Gagne, Mr. Perfect Curt Hennig, and Road Warrior
Hawk, just to name a few. While there are wrestlers
that have not heeded the words of Taz, because of the
dangerous nature of the business, and because what
they do is life shortening, wrestling and God does need
to go together.—TB

I want to again thank Fr. Abraham
George for stepping in to celebrate the
Triduum in our community when I was
out with Influenza during Holy Week. It
was a truly collaborative effort among the
musicians, sacristans and coordinators,
as well as the community that made
Fr. Abraham feel very welcomed and allowed our
celebrations to go on. I am sorry to have missed my first
Holy Week as your pastor but I was under doctors
order to not be around others until Easter Sunday morning.
Stoltzman to cover the Vigil Mass in Hampton on
Saturday. I did not find coverage for daily Mass on
Thursday or Friday so there will be no Mass those
days, although Adoration will take place at St. Mathias,
but not at St. Mary’s. Also, in the event that I am
delayed returning Saturday evening, Fr. TJ McKenzie
from Hastings will be here for Sunday Masses at 8AM
and 10AM.
Wedding Season is upon us. Wow! I will celebrate
more weddings my first year in the tri-parish than I did
in total my four years at my previous assignment. This
is a good thing! Before the end of this year, we have 13
weddings scheduled in addition to the 2 we had in
February. I could not do this without the help of all
the wonderful wedding coordinators who volunteer
many hours in preparation for each wedding including
being present the day off. As a reminder, the general
timeframe for contacting the parish prior to a wedding
is 1 year out. This is important as dates fill up and
there may be more preparation required depending on
each couples circumstance. Generally speaking,
baptized Catholics must be confirmed prior to
receiving the Sacrament of Matrimony unless
exceptional or grave inconvenience prevent.
Continued Blessings this Easter Season,
Fr. Cole
Last week we saw an introduction from the new
Principal of St. John the Baptist School, Mr. Mike
Strommen. We are very fortunate to have a Catholic
school serving our community. Our goal is to make a
quality Catholic education as accessible and affordable
to everyone who chooses to send their children there.
Catholic Education is an important aspect of our faith
and Pope Francis has written at length of the
importance of every parish providing such opportunity
to this current generation as our ancestors provided
preceding generations. This requires support and
collaboration to ensure this is achievable. I would
encourage anyone who has questions about our school,
or who would like to offer suggestions for
improvement, to contact Mr. Strommen via email at
[email protected]. As always, I look forward
to hearing your ideas also. My contact information is
in the bulletin every week.
I will be out of town next Wednesday (April 13th)
through Saturday (April 16th). I have arranged for
Fr. Ben Little, Pastor of St. Michael’s in Farmington to
celebrate the school Mass on Wednesday and Fr. Bill
Thanks for all the cards and notes, as well as food and
support many of you offered the 5 days I was out. I
really appreciate your care and concern.
