Mack Lyon Middle School Page 2 Lyon takes on Swainston by: Mr. Leonard The 2016 CCSD Middle School basketball season schedule brought the Thunderbirds of Swainston Middle School to our Lyon Middle School gymnasium Thursday afternoon. The games were entertaining, and when the dust had settled in “the Corral,” each school went home with a win and a loss. The matchups began with our Lady Mustangs taking the court. From the opening tipoff, you could tell the game would be close and tough. The opening score came as Aubrey Aikele put in both halves of a one-and-one foul shot. Swainston quickly balanced the score; the see-saw battle was underway. Neither team could build a lead of more than four points and the first half came to an end with the scoreboard showing the Thunderbirds leading by one with at a score of 10-11. The second half was identical to the first. Both teams trading scores as the clock wound down. With one minute remaining the score stood 19-20 for Swainston. Intensity filled the players and led to a Swainston foul. Kaitlyn Anderson made the first half of her one-and-one opportunity to tie the score at 20. As the seconds wound down Swainston put in a basket for a two point lead. It seemed as though the battle was at an end. The Lady Mustangs brought the ball down the court through the press that the T-birds had been playing most of the game. The clock showed four seconds remaining when Kaitlyn Hopkins launched a three-pointer that found its way to the basket. The final score stood Lyon 23 and Swainston 20. The boys took the court for the wrap-up game. Lyon put up two points and Swainston matched it. Again, the score swayed back and forth. The end of the first quarter of play showed a score of Swainston 13, Lyon 11. The opening minutes suggested that this game would be a continuation of the pattern established by the girls, but by halftime the score of 16-32 showed that Swainston was gaining the upper-hand. In the second half, the combination of Swainston’s height and fast break plays proved to be too much for our Mustangs as the T-Birds flew away with the victory 61-24. Page 3 W. Mack Lyon Middle School Google Expeditions By: Mrs. Prisbrey Students Take Virtual Field Trips with Google Expeditions During the current school year, Google has launched its Expeditions software, bringing virtual field trips to schools in many countries. Mack Lyon Middle School was selected to participate in the Expeditions Pioneer Program, a unique opportunity for teachers and students to add depth to the learning experience. There are currently over 100 expeditions available to schools in Australia, Brazil, New Zealand, the U.K., and the U.S., with plans for more locations to be added throughout the year. On the day of the expeditions, participating teachers each received a kit with a tablet in which to control the field trip. The teachers then chose expeditions appropriate for class learning. The destination choices were wide-ranging—from The Great Wall of China to The Great Barrier Reef, from the surface of Mars to Antarctica—just to name a few. Each student used a Google Cardboard viewer and an ASUS Smartphone in order to observe 360-degree views of each destination. As the tour guide, the teacher explained points of interest along the trip using arrows that students could follow. Information about each spot was followed with questions for class discussion. Each expedition lasted about 20 minutes. Students who participated in the virtual field trips were excited about being transported to places they had been studying. When asked, students were mostly impressed with the spectacular panoramas. Currently, there are also career expeditions available while virtual college tours are in the works for the near future. The software is expected to be available to the public by the next school year. Mrs. Chism’s ELA Star Readers Page 4 W. Mack Lyon Middle School Food Drive by: Mrs. Bunker During the week of November the Student Council initiated their annual food drive. The food drive this year was a huge success. The students collected more than 2100 nonperishable food items which exceed the school’s goal of 1500. The student council held a contest between 6th, 7th, and 8th grades to see which class would be able to collect the most items. The eight grade class won this year’s contest, and was rewarded with a movie, popcorn, soda, and candy. Overton Power sponsors the food drive every year and they provided the funds for the movie day. All food items collected were delivered to Cappalappa and dispersed to local families. 16th-20th Lyon Basketball Schedule W. Mack Lyon Middle School Page 6
