F
ive years ago, the Chicago Blackhawks organization was transformed with the implementation of a bold, new mission: One Goal. Since then, we
have been steadfast in our commitment to achieving excellence, not just on the ice, but outside of the rink as well. We value our unique position
in the community, and it affords us an incredible opportunity to contribute to the greater good of the city we are all so proud to call home.
Nowhere is that dedication more strongly reflected than through our philanthropic arm, Chicago Blackhawks Charities. Driven by a desire to
improve the lives of Chicago’s youth, this year our organization focused on “shaping the future.” Together we can build a better tomorrow and
deeply impact generations to come.
Since our inception in 1993, Chicago Blackhawks Charities has granted more than $10 million to local nonprofit organizations who devote time
and resources to health and wellness, education and housing. Cultivating strong partnerships has been central to our ability to expand our reach. In
2009, we partnered with the Robert R. McCormick Foundation to create the Chicago Blackhawks Community Fund, a McCormick Foundation Fund,
and have since been able to impact more organizations that share in our commitment to helping those who need it most.
We are also proud to announce that we are in the first year of a partnership with the Chicago Public Library. We have adopted the Mabel
Manning Branch Library, located just blocks away from the United Center, for the next three years. In fact, Blackhawks forward Patrick Sharp has
already volunteered his time, reading to children to emphasize the importance of literacy.
Additionally, Chicago Blackhawks Charities’ impact is readily apparent through our work with the Nettelhorst School. Five years ago, we worked
with them to build a gym that has served more than 800 children, helping the school decrease obesity. Since then, we assisted them in paving
their outside space, and together we started an after school hockey clinic for students.
We’ve replicated that success with other organizations, such as the Hope Institute Learning Academy by helping them build a sensory gym to
support children with autism. This year, we are also partnering with the American Indian Center to create a gym and health and wellness programs
that will give them the tools to help fight obesity.
On behalf of the Chicago Blackhawks, we are pleased to share our 2011-12 annual report highlighting the organization’s community outreach
efforts.
While we are proud of the impact we have made thus far, we recognize that our work is far from finished. By broadening the opportunities for
our community’s youth to invest in themselves, we hope to continue “shaping the future” for the next generation. Thank you for your continued
support.
Sincerely,
W. Rockwell WirtzJohn F. McDonough

launched in 2010 to allow hockey to be affordable
and accessible to everyone. Through the combined
efforts of the Blackhawks, AHAI and USA Hockey’s
OneGoal Equipment Rental program, each
MinorHawk player has low-cost access to rental
gear and a Learn to Skate session at selected
rinks around Illinois. Participants also receive a
Blackhawks practice jersey and are invited to a
clinic on United Center ice during the season.
The Chicago Blackhawks
Coaches Club
The CBCC was created to allow
AHAI coaches exclusive access to
practice plans, coaching tips, special ticket offers
and more, for a minimal membership cost. The
CBCC holds various seminars throughout Illinois
in smaller, interactive environments catered to
the coach’s level. Members receive quarterly
emails with coach/player interviews, nutrition
tips and more.
Hockey Weekend Across
America
The fourth annual Hockey Weekend
Across America was Feb. 17-19, 2012, as
NBC and the NHL saluted the
roots of the game.
Blackhawks Hockey Camps
Led by former Blackhawk and local
youth hockey player Eddie Olczyk,
weekly summer camps are open
to all skaters ages 5-17. For more
information, check the youth hockey
section of chicagoblackhawks.com.
Eddie Olczyk Award
The Eddie Olczyk Award (EOA)
was created to support young
hockey players and teams in
Illinois who may not have the
means to play at a competitive level. Grants
are awarded by Chicago Blackhawks Charities
to organizations serving the youth hockey
community who fit the requirements. In its
inaugural season, EOA awarded $25,000 to youth
hockey players in Illinois. For more information,
go to chicagoblackhawks.com and click on “Eddie
Olczyk Award” under the Youth Hockey tab.
Blackhawks Day Camps
With the help of Blackhawks Alumni
Eddie Olczyk, Steve Konroyd, Troy
Murray and Denis Savard, the
Blackhawks run day and evening
clinics for youth hockey players at
various rinks in Illinois. The free clinics
are designed to reach out to fans in
local rinks and provide an opportunity
for kids of all ages to be taught by a Blackhawks
legend.
Illinois High School
State Hockey
Championship
Presented By Hinckley Springs
The Blackhawk Cup is the Illinois
state championship for competitive
youth hockey. For the past 25 years,
the Blackhawks have hosted the high
school state championships.
