STUDENT
EMPLOYMENT
Students may apply for on-campus employment
upon arrival to AMDA. Where possible, we
recommend that students not work during their first
semester, allowing time to acclimate to their new
environment and focus on the rigorous program
at AMDA. Students who choose to work while in
school can work part-time, no more than 20 hours
per week while classes are in session. Due to the
intensive nature of the program, students should
realistically anticipate working 6-10 hours per week.
It is best to anticipate using student employment
paychecks for living expenses, rather than for tuition
or housing costs. If looking for employment outside
of AMDA, it is important to find a job that offers a
flexible schedule. Remember that your work hours
cannot interfere with your course of study at AMDA.
Applications will be given out after class schedules
are received.

PLACEMENTS
During orientation all new students will present Placements. A meeting detailing information about Placements will
take place following registration. Placements are a private demonstration by each incoming student for a panel of
select faculty and administration, which take place throughout orientation. These Placements are not auditions but
rather demonstrations of your work that allow us to form class sections which will foster your success in the classroom.
The following information will give you details about what you need to prepare.
Studio Students
»» Monologue placement: You will be required to present two memorized monologues of contrasting styles. Each
monologue should be one minute in length and should be from a published play. You are encouraged to
present the same pieces from your audition for admission, although the monologues must be shortened to one
minute each for placement. It may be helpful to bring a copy of each monologue.
Integrated Students
»» VOICE PLACEMENT: You will be required to sing either a memorized 16 bar or one-minute song selection from
the musical theatre or classical repertoire. You are encouraged to present the same song you performed for your
admissions audition, although the song must be shortened to the required length. Please remember to bring sheet
music in your key and in a 3-ring binder. A professional accompanist will be provided.
»» MONOLOGUE PLACEMENT: You will be required to present a memorized one-minute monologue immediately
following your voice demo. You are encouraged to present the same monologue you performed for your admissions
audition, although the monologue must be shortened to one minute. Monologues should be from a published play.
It may be helpful to bring a copy of your monologue.
»» Musicianship Placement: You will be required to take a sight-singing/musicianship test during the Placement
Preparation Meeting. This test will assist us in placing each student in the appropriate level of Musicianship 1. All
students are required to take Musicianship 1 regardless of level.
»» Dance Placement: You will be asked to demonstrate basic steps and techniques in a series of combinations that
are suited for your level and experience. You will be placed in appropriate dance levels in each dance discipline.
No preparation is necessary. AMDA offers beginner, intermediate and advanced classes in all dance disciplines.
Appropriate clothing and shoes are required. Please see the Dance Attire page for details.
DANCE THEATRE STUDENTS
»» DANCE PLACEMENT: You will be asked to do a ballet barre and a variety of dance combinations. Please be
prepared, as you will be asked to perform a 90-second solo piece in the discipline of your choice. You are
encouraged to present the solo piece from your admissions audition. Please provide a CD or MP3 of your solo music.
Placements for Monologues and Voice are run by a stage manager. The stage manager will direct you as to where to go and
what to do. When it is time, the stage manager will bring you backstage. You will walk onto the stage, announce your name,
announce your pieces, and then you will present your pieces. Once you finish, you will say, “Thank you,” exit the stage and go
back to your waiting area. Further instructions will be given at the Placement Preparation Meeting.
Please note, LA Transfer and NY Experience students will only need to participate in voice demo
placements if voice lessons are applicable to the student’s program. NY Experience Music Theatre students
will also take the Musicianship Placement test. Students do not need to do a monologue placement.

Because the AMDA experience reflects a professional environment, students must maintain a neutral appearance for

presenting yourself for the first time as a student to the Artistic Director and/or members of the AMDA faculty.

ATTIRE
REQUIRED ATTIRE FOR CLASSES
Specific attire is required for certain classes depending on the class activity. Students must maintain a neutral
appearance for all classes. You will receive a “Day One” sheet on the last day of orientation that will list the required
attire for the first day of class. Jeans, body jewelry, logos (other than AMDA), and extreme hair coloring are not
appropriate for any class at any time. We suggest that if you are unclear about the dress code for class, wear
professional audition attire. For workshop and performance days, you will provide your own costumes and props.
DANCE ATTIRE
All students are required to have the appropriate dance attire. Below you will find the attire items required for
each program for women and men. Colored tops or bottoms may be permitted in class, but only at the teacher’s
discretion. On the first day of class, be sure to follow the guidelines on the “Day One” sheet and your teacher will
announce in class if he or she will permit you to wear other colors or items. You may already own some of the items
listed, so be sure to bring them with you.

STUDENT RESOURCES
AMDA LIBRARY
The AMDA’s Performing Arts Library is an innovative
partner in the pursuit of academic excellence for the
AMDA community and a leader in providing dynamic
performing arts information services. The Library
provides a welcoming facility that supports students,
alumni, faculty and staff in their academic, artistic and
professional goals by providing enhanced access to
organized performing arts collections and instructional
resources, promoting local cultural events and activities,
providing free or discounted access to live theatrical and
premier cinematic performances, and assisting in job
placement and individual professional development.
An extensive collection of performing arts materials
including over 75,000 individual pieces of sheet music,
6,000 play scripts, nearly 1,000 piano/vocal scores, 800
songbooks, 900 musical librettos, 300 screenplays, 2,000
audio recordings, 2,000 video recordings, and numerous
source materials, biographies, autobiographies, reference
sources and additional research materials are available at
the AMDA Library for all students, staff, faculty and alumni.
A seminar introducing all new students to the Library and
its collections will take place during orientation.
AMDA STUDENT STORE
The AMDA Student Store is located at the 61st Street
building on the third floor and offers an array of items
such as textbooks, AMDA apparel, dance wear, and
food. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner items including salads,

HEALTHCARE
SERVICES
Health insurance is recommended for all students due
to our rigorous programs. All medical diagnosis and
treatment options must be found outside of AMDA, as
we do not provide onsite health care professionals.
Most health plans will allow dependent children to continue coverage until
they reach age 25, and sometimes longer. Dependent coverage is typically
more affordable than participating in a plan as a primary member. If you
chose to have coverage, it is advisable to be proactive and make contact with
a doctor in your network prior to the start of school, as most medical needs
are time-sensitive and attendance in class is of paramount importance.
Students without health insurance have several resources available to them
for physical and mental health needs, some of which are listed below:

Arms and Ansonia buildings and AMDA has a personal relationship with their
two primary doctors. This new facility, which is open 7 days a week, is ideal for
treating common illnesses, injuries and a wide variety of minor emergencies;
it is also fully equipped with x-ray machines and other equipment necessary
for immediate evaluation. Their health care services are affordable without
insurance but they also take most major insurance providers too.
AMDA also has a direct relationship with the NY Counseling Center
which takes most major insurance providers, but will also work with AMDA
students without insurance on a sliding scale. The Ryan Center is also a
great community resource for those with medical needs without insurance.
This is a community clinic so waits tend to be long, but this is an affordable
resource for those with non-emergent medical needs. The Ryan Center
has multiple locations in Manhattan, please see this website for more
information: www.ryancenter.org.
In the event of an emergency requiring more than a primary care
physician or an urgent care center, St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital is located
just two blocks from our main campus at 58th Street and Amsterdam Ave.
With any preexisting medical, mental health, and specialist needs
or concerns, please speak with Student Affairs upon your arrival for
additional resources.

CAMPUS & NY SAFETY
Crime in NYC has declined in record numbers over the past decade or so, making NYC one of
the safest big cities in the U.S. In addition, the Upper West Side (where all four of AMDA’s NY
campus building are located) is one of the safest neighborhoods in the entire city.
AMDA is committed to continually updating security measures to ensure that all persons using our facilities are as free
as possible from threats to their safety and/or well-being. In accordance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus
Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act) and related amendments to education law, AMDA notifies
current and prospective students and employees of these regulations by way of an annual Department of Security and
Safety Report, the Student Handbook and other related documents. The Department of Security and Safety prepares
this report to comply with the Clery Act. This report can be found online at www.amda.edu.
Campus Safety Tips
NYC Safety Tips
• When traveling to and from the 61 Street building, we
strongly advise that you travel in groups, particularly
at night. When leaving for the evening, make sure
your friends are aware of your destination and the
time that you are expected to return.
• When taking the subway after normal hours, wait for
the train at the “off hours” designated area. These
areas are often in view of the token booth clerk. When
getting on the train, particularly at night, use the first
car of the train which is manned by a train engineer
or fourth or fifth cars, which are usually manned by a
conductor. Do not use the last car of the train.
• Secure your cell phones, MP3 players, tablets
etc. when in public. New York City has recently
experienced an increase in crime, particularly on
subways relating to the theft of these devices. When
in public, we strongly advise that you place these
devices in your bag, backpack, or pocket and do not
display them until you get to your destination.
• Do not leave personal property unattended while
in public places. Public places include hallways,
classrooms, studios, student lounges, computer
rooms, and kitchens. Additionally laundry should
not be left unattended in the laundry rooms of our
residence buildings.
• We strongly advise that students in the residence halls
keep doors locked at all times, whether in or out of
the room.
• Be leery of apartment ads listed on craigslist.com. Use
a licensed broker in your apartment searches.
• Do not carry your social security card or passport with
you. If these documents are stolen, the person can
assume your identity and open up accounts in your
name which can damage your credit. Only carry these
items when needed for employment purposes.
• Be careful using ATM machines. ATM areas in banks
are frequented by the homeless, particularly in
cold weather. If you see something that makes you
uncomfortable, go to another ATM. Go with your
“gut” instinct. After withdrawing money, do not stop
to count it. ATMs are well lit and you can be seen from
the outside. Exit cautiously and look around to make
sure you are not being followed.
Alert System and Announcements
AMDA uses the Everbridge Aware® system for all emergency broadcasts. When you receive a text message or
email from the AMDA Emergency Alert System, please respond immediately to confirm that contact has been
made and that AMDA has your correct information.
Announcements regarding school closures and the status of evening classes and activities are listed on the CBS
News website (www.newyork.cbslocal.com/school-closings) and AMDA NY Twitter (www.twitter.com/amda_ny)
and broadcast by local CBS radio and television stations: 1010 WINS, CBS News Radio 880 and Channel 2 News.
AMDA generally follows the NYC Public School System for weather-related closings for daytime classes. The status
of evening classes is determined by AMDA by 2:00 PM on the day of the potential closure.

Rights and Privacy Act (also referred to as the Buckley
Amendment) and is a federal law designed to protect
the privacy of student education records. When a
student reaches the age of 18 or begins attending
a post-secondary institution, FERPA rights are
transferred from the parent to the student. Parents
may obtain and discuss their student’s grades,
attendance, and financial information with a signed
consent from the student.
How do I maintain my AMDA Scholarship for my
second year?
You must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA, from one
academic year to the next, to sustain any merit-based,
institutional scholarship. Additionally, you must maintain
a 2.0 GPA in order to maintain any Federal Financial
Aid funds. Merit-based, institutional scholarships are

Helpful Hints When Driving
or Cabbing in New York City
Most streets in Manhattan (at least the ones on
the Upper West Side) are set up as a grid. Most
avenues run north or south. Broadway is an
avenue that runs both north and south. Streets
run east to west. Generally, even numbered
streets run west to east; odd numbered streets
run east to west. They are numbered sequentially
south to north from 1 to 214 (in Manhattan). For
