Dear Friends and Supporters of St. Andrew’s,
Katherine Graham, the famed publisher of the Washington
Post, once commented, “No one can avoid aging, but aging
productively is something else.”
That sentiment clearly reflects our mission at St. Andrew’s.
We strive every day to empower elders and their caregivers
through choices and options that foster a vital life. We honor
each person’s uniqueness and dignity and believe our work
will bring vitality to seniors and support productive aging
throughout the life of elders.
In 2014, St. Andrew’s touched the lives of more than 8,700
seniors. The continuing growth of our Charitable Foundation
enables us to fulfill our mission by serving St. Louis seniors
in need. Over the past year, we have established a new
Foundation Board that is providing valuable guidance to our
efforts and assisting us in raising the funds needed to care for
those who outlive their resources.
The popularity of our holiday Adopt A Senior program
reached new heights in 2014, as we provided gifts, gift cards,
and holiday cheer to a record 670 needy seniors.
Our charitable care program is growing as well. Thanks to a
grant from the Lutheran Foundation and our many generous
supporters, we now provide in-home care or caregiver support
for 185 low-income seniors through Senior Solutions. Project
Independence helped seniors remain safely in their home by
providing minor home repairs for 40 seniors.
Yet another generous gift from our dear friends, the Schobels,
created a matching gift challenge that, together with a
challenge gift from Phyllis Tirmenstein, the support of
numerous donors, and our Neighborhood Assistance Program
tax credits, helped us raise the funds to purchase a new bus
for our low-income communities. The bus is already in service,
taking residents to the store, the bank, special programs, and
other essential locations.
The need for St. Andrew’s many programs and services grows
each year as more of us are, indeed, aging. But thanks to our
friends and supporters who are listed in this report, we are
able to respond to these needs and help seniors continue to age
productively.
As we look back at all we have accomplished in 2014, we
want to tell each of you how grateful we are for all you have
done. Your giving has had a tremendous impact on the lives of
seniors. We hope you will continue to support the mission of
St. Andrew’s in 2015!

What is St. Andrew’s?
Ageless Remarkable Saint Louisans
Growing older carries a unique set of challenges, for
the senior, the family, and other potential caregivers.
When crises occur, most of us aren’t prepared to
act. We haven’t pre-planned. We don’t know where
to find the resources we need. We often don’t even
know what questions to ask.
“No matter what the job is, you always can find a way
to contribute something.”
- Ann Bannes
That’s where we come in. For the past 50 years,
St. Andrew’s Resources for Seniors System, a notfor-profit organization, has been the place where
seniors, their families, and caregivers find answers.
Whether it’s occasional help that allows a senior
to remain independent at home, a comfortable
retirement residence that feels like home, or an
assisted living or skilled care facility, St. Andrew’s
can provide whatever you need. Thanks to donations
to our Charitable Foundation, we are able to assist
seniors at all income levels. We help them find and
access the support they need and, most importantly,
we help them worry less.
Since 2011, the Wool
Challenge has generated over
$425,000 for seniors in need

“The worst thing you can do is become a couch potato.
My goal is to be the first guy to walk, run, crawl or
whatever I have to do to cross a marathon finish line at
age 100.”
In a world where seniors are living longer and health
care costs are constantly on the rise, millions of seniors
have discovered that their savings just are not enough
to cover even their most basic needs. As the cost of
aging goes up, so too, does the need for charitable care.
- Pat Britt
The St. Andrew’s Charitable Foundation supports
older adults who have outlived their resources. Last
year, our foundation raised more than $1.1 million
to help bridge the gap between what seniors and
their families can afford and what seniors need to live
healthy, secure, and fulfilled lives.
Your support helps St. Andrew’s to meet these needs
so together we can make a difference in the lives of
those who have made such a difference in ours.

Meet Gussie
Gussie has lived in the same St. Louis apartment for 68 years.
She loves where she lives. Her church is across the street, and
her brother, sister, and nephew occupy all four apartments in
the building. At 81, Gussie says she is “Blessed to still be on
this earth." She has had a great deal of medical problems, and
has had several falls. She does not want to leave her home to
go into a nursing home, not only because she is not sure how
she could afford it, but because she doesn’t want to leave the
home she loves so dearly.
Gussie’s doctor was worried about her safety and the
possibility for more falls. For a year or so, she was able to get
a Medicaid-funded caregiver to come to the house a couple
times a week. Between her family and her caregiver, she was
able to get enough help to remain living in her home. “But
then, Medicaid said she made too much money and they
wouldn’t pay for the lady to come anymore,” explains Gussie.
She was terrified she wouldn’t be able to stay in her home.
Thankfully, the St. Andrew’s Charitable Care program was
able to step in and help.
Now, Ann, a Senior Solutions caregiver, comes to see Gussie
twice a week for two hours. “Gussie is just wonderful. She
doesn’t have any children so I’m the only baby she's got. I
bring her breakfast and we laugh and talk for a little bit and
then I tell her, ‘Well, I got to get up and get busy Miss Gussie’,
says Ann. Ann helps Gussie with light housework, laundry,
grooming, and bathing. “My Lord, it helps so much!”
exclaims Gussie.
Through our Charitable Foundation, we provide seniors with services
that enable them to remain in their homes. We arrange for minor home
repairs to correct problems that may threaten their safety. We provide
transportation to help them get to the grocery store. We help those
that are already in our care, continue to stay in the safe and healthy
environment that they had envisioned for their golden years.

Meet Beulah
Beulah lives in a small house in Dogtown that she and
her husband, Robert, shared almost all of their 55 years
of marriage. Their loving union produced 4 children, 4
grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren, and many years of
happiness. Beulah worked at a furniture store and Robert was
a truck driver with a passion for motorcycles. Robert liked to
work on the garage, he fixed things around the house, and he
was known to piddle a little longer than he needed at night to
make sure that his young neighbor, who walked her dog, got
home safely.
A few years ago, Beulah realized that Robert just wasn’t
himself. He was tired and didn’t feel up to doing all the things
he usually did around the house. “He kept asking, Beulah, we
are ok with money, right? …I’d always tell him ‘Yes, we are fine,'
Beulah remembers. She pauses and wipes her tears away.
“I found out later, he had been diagnosed with Leukemia.”
Robert died two years ago. The loss of her life-long partner
and friend was devastating. Her grief coupled with losing ¾ of
their income, and having her own health issues that led to three
hospital stays since Robert’s death has been very challenging.
For the first time in her life, Beulah has found that she needs
to ask for help. With a drastically reduced income, funeral bills,
a mortgage, and hospital bills - Beulah is struggling. When
her house needed repairs, she wasn’t sure how she could afford
to fix them. Her front railing was broken and unsafe. One of
the windows to her basement was broken and the frame was
rotting out. She was worried she might have to leave the home
she loves. A home filled with loving memories of Robert and
their life together.
Thanks to your donations, St. Andrew’s was able to help. With
a minor home repair grant through Project Independence,
our handyman, John, was able to fix her front railing that was
rusting out and replace a broken window. “I can’t thank you
enough. John came on one of the coldest days in January. He
was so kind and I can’t tell you what a relief it is to have two
less things to worry about,” explains Beulah.
So many seniors, by no fault of their own, find themselves in need of a
little help. Beulah is just one of the seniors who is able to live safely in their
home thanks to your generosity. Thank you.

Meet Helen
Helen never married although she is loved by many. She never
had children of her own but she taught many children. She
was an elementary school teacher for many years in St. Louis.
She inspired the minds and hearts of hundreds of children.
Today, she is 93. She has lived in one of our skilled care
communities for more than 7 years. Some days her memory
is better than others. She will tell you about the children she
taught, the plays and dances she helped put on to raise funds
for the war effort, and other incredible stories about growing
up and growing old in St. Louis.
Helen is very active. She takes part in crafts and other
activities. She never expected to live until she was 93. She has
outlived her resources but, thanks to your donations, she will
be able to live out the duration of her brilliant life in the place
she now calls home.
Helen is just one of our financial aid recipients. Through our Financial
Assistance Program, St. Andrew’s Charitable Foundation helps alleviate
some of the financial burden of some residents by paying a portion of
their monthly bill. Thanks to the donations of our generous supporters,
we are able to prevent the displacement of wonderful people like Helen
who will continue to live life to the fullest without worrying about having
to leave her home.

This past year was another fulfilling and inspiring year for
the Friends of St. Andrew’s. Not only did we host an amazing
event, our 3rd Annual Derby Brunch on May 4th, but
we also served over 600 seniors with our Adopt A Senior
program! We would like to thank all of our donors and
volunteers that helped make this possible. We are so thankful
to have all of the wonderful volunteers and friends that help
impact our seniors' lives in a positive, important way. We are

Adopt A Senior: Thanks to the generosity of
many individuals and companies, our Adopt
A Senior program was more successful than
ever. This year, a record 670 low-income
seniors had an extra special Holiday Season!
Seniors living in our low-income communities
each received a Walgreens gift card, while
over 60 seniors, who we serve in their homes,
received generous presents such as clothing,
cookware, fruit, gift cards, mattresses,
refrigerators, computers, furniture, TV’s, and
even a stove! The feedback from the seniors
was one of appreciation and thankfulness!
Quality of Life Programs: Friends further
strives to enhance the lives of seniors through
quality of life programs. Whether it is
through music, gardening, or love of animals,
the Friends work to bring joy to our lowincome residents.
All of the seniors in the Adopt A Senior program
have fixed incomes that are near or well below
the poverty level. It is extremely difficult to
afford essentials, like food, medicine, and basic
household cleaning products, so the idea of
buying new clothes or a bed is just impossible.
James and Ava:
When Ava was asked what she could use
for Christmas, we practically had to pull her
teeth before she said, "Well I could use a few
spoons and warmer coat." After speaking
with her caregiver, we found that the soles
of her tennis shoes were almost completely
worn through and that she was in desperate
need of socks, bath towels and a new recliner
in the living room as her current recliner had
broken and the exposed springs in the chair
were dangerous. Ava couldn’t believe there
were people out there that would help her,
but she agreed to be “adopted." A few weeks
before Christmas, she called our office to
ask if she might be able to change her list. “I
was wondering if you might consider taking
that coat off my list and putting on some
new boots for my husband,” she wondered.
Her husband was even older than her, with
escalating health problems and was in just as
much need. We told her we would take care
of it. On Christmas, her caregiver arrived
with everything on her list including her coat
and new boots and a jacket for her husband.

The 3rd Annual Derby Brunch, hosted by the Friends of St.
Andrew’s, was a spectacular event that raised funds for seniors in
need and dazzled our taste buds and gave us an excuse to wear
gorgeous hats!
Derby Chairs, Lana Shepek and Jessica Denham, led a wonderful
group of dedicated volunteers to ensure that this event was one
to remember. Our guests enjoyed delicious food and drinks
from several local restaurants and caterers, such as Home Wine
Kitchen, Strange Donuts, Companion Bakery, and Marcoot Jersey
Creamery. We were all in awe of the grandeur of the Magic Chef
Mansion while we enjoyed live music and pictures with a live race
horse! The event is quickly becoming a St. Andrew’s staple, and we
hope you will join us next time, as we are always adding new and
exciting things to this party.

Golf Outing:
The St. Andrew’s Loving Hope Golf Outing was a tremendous
success in 2014! In only three short years this event has become
a signature fundraising event for St. Andrew’s, and we couldn’t be
more thrilled by the support that this event receives.
Every year, we seem to land on a scorcher of a day, but even
then, no one complains - the day is consistently filled with a
good game, lots of laughter, and plenty of water. We were so
excited that once again, due to the hard work of our committee,
both flights were full and our silent auction sold out! Thanks to
everyone who came and enjoyed golf, lunch, and the auction, we
were able to raise $60,000 for the Charitable Assistance Program
at Brooking Park.
The committee, led by Donna Murray, worked hard to make this
event a success, and we are all looking forward to the next outing
on Monday, August 3rd, 2015.

Casino Night:
This year, Tower Grove Manor held our 2nd Annual Casino
Royale event! This event was designed to raise funds for the
Charitable Assistance Program at Tower Grove Manor, and we
are so happy to announce that, with the help of HealthLink and
the residents of Tower Grove Manor, we were able to make this
event a true success!
Many of the residents came downstairs on the evening of July
18th to play Black Jack, Poker, and Roulette, or just to enjoy our
lounge singer and the great food. Tower Grove Manor’s very
own Charlie Odorizzi (our James Bond) went to “jail” until the
residents generously raised $500 to bail him out! All who came
had a fantastic time, and everyone walked away with a healthrelated prize, supplied by HealthLink. We plan to repeat this fun
evening on July 17th, 2015.
Special thank you to Susan French for her help planning this
event!
Trivia Night:
The very first St. Andrew’s of Bridgeton Trivia Night was held
on Friday, March 28th. The event was loads of fun - trivia, prizes,
drinks, and auction items made for the perfect evening!
This event will be repeated for many years to come, including on
April 10th, 2015.

Ageless Goes Beyond a State of Mind for St. Andrew’s
It is our award winning program honoring seniors over the age of 75
who are living active and vital lives.
Our honorees exemplify St. Andrew’s vision of a society where all
older adults are respected, productive, secure, and fulfilled.
Ageless-Remarkable Saint Louisans Gala
The Ageless-Remarkable Saint Louisans Gala is our signature
event, honoring 20 individuals and/or couples each year who are
celebrating life and redefining aging. It’s a festive and elegant evening;
the honorees are inspiring; and the funds raised help St. Andrew’s
provide over $1.1 million in charitable care to St. Louis’ seniors.
The 12th annual Ageless-Remarkable Saint Louisans Gala took
place on Sunday, November 9, 2014, at the Hyatt Regency St.
Louis At the Arch. The event recognized another amazing group
of active and engaged seniors in the St. Louis Community. This
year’s honorees are featured in vignettes throughout this report.
From traveling the world and embarking on new careers, to offering
their time and talents to their favorite charitable organizations, and
lending a hand in their communities, this year’s class of Ageless
Remarkable St. Louisans continues to reshape the face of aging in
our region and provide fresh perspectives on what it means to grow
older. In addition to celebrating our honorees and redefining age,
this year’s gala raised more than $420,000 for St. Louis seniors in
need. A special thanks to our sponsors, our committee members and
chairs for making this event such a tremendous success.

Ageless Society
Over 270 honorees have been selected since we began the Ageless
program in 2003. After a year as an Honoree, those individuals
are welcomed into the Ageless Society. We look to this “alumni”
group to sustain the Spirit of Ageless going forward. Led by
Harris Frank, members of the Ageless Society serve as members
of many of St. Andrew’s volunteer committees. Ageless Society
members often nominate candidates for future consideration, and
they contribute financially to support the Ageless program and
St. Andrew’s mission.
Ageless Voices:
In 2011, 33.6%
of St. Louis Seniors
reported that they do not
exercise.
66% reported having
high blood pressure and
56% reported having
high cholesterol (2013
Missouri Senior Report)
We are thrilled to report that
Emerson has, once again,
generously offered to be the Lead Sponsor of Ageless Voices. The
Ageless Voices Lecture Series was created to engage St. Louis
seniors and the St. Louis community in continued learning while
promoting St. Andrew’s mission and vision of a society where all
elders are respected, productive, secure, and fulfilled.
Last year, Ageless Voices served as a forum for all seniors to
continue to live active lives and be involved in our community
through partnerships with various local organizations. The 2014
Ageless Voices Presentations hosted more than 250 St. Louis
seniors and included Express Scripts, the Mercantile Library,
the Missouri Botanical Garden, and a day trip to the Lincoln
Museum.
The program’s goal is that, through continued educational
experiences, we will inspire the St. Louis senior population, while
also sharing with them the plight of many St. Louis seniors who
have outlived their resources.
The 2015 Ageless Voices Series kicked
off this spring and details will be
forthcoming.
