MIND GAMES ON THE PLAYGROUND
MISSION
At Lawrence Intermediate School, a giant
chess board was painted on the playground,
funded by a grant from Lawrence Township
Education Foundation. Students have access
to 3 foot tall chess pieces that they can play
with during recess. Teachers utilize the chess
board as well. LIS students are taught the
game of chess. The entire black-top area is
now an outdoor classroom with games of
four-square and a giant color-coded map of
the United States. Over 900 students each
year participate in this program.

STREAMKEEPERS: BACK TO NATURE
Ben Franklin Elementary School first-graders began
a year-long science project called Streamkeepers.
During this project, funded by the Lawrence Township
Education Foundation, first graders will step into the
shoes of scientists, ecologists and mathematicians
in order to learn how to perform authentic science
tasks and connect information from a variety of
sources. Scientist Robert T. Morris has partnered
with the students as their resident expert. The
first-graders will share their data through their
collaborative wiki called Streamkeepers.

STREAMKEEPERS: BACK TO NATURE
Ben Franklin Elementary School first-graders began
a year-long science project called Streamkeepers.
During this project, funded by the Lawrence Township
Education Foundation, first graders will step into the
shoes of scientists, ecologists and mathematicians
in order to learn how to perform authentic science
tasks and connect information from a variety of
sources. Scientist Robert T. Morris has partnered
with the students as their resident expert. The
first-graders will share their data through their
collaborative wiki called Streamkeepers.
