40 Days to a Deeper Faith
Doug Munton
When you repent of your sins and place your
faith in Christ, you experience a new
beginning. Salvation in Christ is awesome
and eternal, but it’s only the starting point of
your spiritual life.
Perhaps, like many Christians, you linger in
the shallow end. You’re unaware that there is
more to be experienced, or unsure how to
move beyond your comfort zone and follow
the Lord in every area of your life. You splash
around, only ankle-deep in your
understanding of God and his purposes for
your time here on earth.
But the Bible says God longs for you to grow
spiritually through discipleship. To go beyond the elementary principles of Christianity. To
strengthen your understanding of the Lord and his will for you. To plunge deeper and deeper into
the faith life. To become immersed in the whole truth.
In Immersed: 40 Days to a Deeper Faith, Pastor Doug Munton has developed an ideal Bible study
tool for churches and home groups, or for use as a 40-day devotional by individuals who yearn to
explore the depths of their faith and to discover the vast riches of Christ.
“This is the best tool I have ever seen to unite a church during a forty-day season. I wish I had this
book years ago. Your church will change if you use Immersed. And I mean, change in large and
meaningful ways. Go deep for forty days, and watch what God does!” -John Avant, senior pastor,
First Baptist Church of Concord, TN; author, If God Were Real and Authentic Power

Endorsements for Immersed:
“Doug Munton knows how to write. I've read his books. Doug Munton loves God's people. I've
experienced his Pastor's heart. In Immersed, Doug combines these two traits to efectively call us
closer to God. Forty days of devotions—what a treasure. They combine Doug's expertise with his
humor and piercing discernment. He knows what needs to be said and knows how to say it
efectively. Prepare yourself to draw closer to the Holy One.” -John Marshall, pastor, Second
Baptist Church, Springfeld, MO
“Doug Munton’s 40-day devotional will guide you into a deeper walk with Jesus Christ. As in the
story he tells of jumping of the high diving board into a swimming pool—it is not enough to get
into the water; we need to go deeper. And that is true. We need to go deeper with Jesus Christ.” –
Elmer Towns, co-founder, Liberty University, Lynchburg, VA

40 Days to a Deeper Faith
1. What is the greatest need of the church today?
The church in America- and the Western World in general- desperately needs a renewed emphasis
on discipleship. Christians and churches have remained far too shallow while God is calling them to
a deeper walk with him. Immersed: 40 Days to Deeper Faith is written with the goal of helping
churches and individual believers develop healthy thinking and habits which will lead them to a
stronger faith.
2. Why are so many Christians so shallow in their faith?
Some are shallow because they have never been challenged to grow deeper. They have only
thought of the salvation side of faith without ever being confronted with the discipleship side of
faith. Others have been confused or distracted by the world. Often they are swimming in the kiddie
pool of faith without ever understanding that God wants them to plunge deeper.
3. You emphasize Bible reading in your book. Why is that so important?
Bible reading has been forgotten by so much of the church. The discipline of reading the Bible for
yourself is one of the greatest factors in your spiritual development. It is the source of the knowledge of right and wrong and the key to a deeper understanding of who God is and what He wants.
While consistent Bible reading isn't the only factor in a deepening faith, it is an indispensable factor
in plunging deeper into faith.
4. What do you mean when you say we should live a Missional Life?
God made us, and saves us, to join Him in His work. A Missional Life is one that sees all of life as an
opportunity to join God in His work. God invites us to join Him in His mission of redemption. He invites us to participate in ministry and service. We are saved for more than just heaven one day, but
for an impact in this day.
5. You say that we should read only one chapter of the book each day for 40 days. Why does
that matter?
Two reasons. One is to develop the healthy habit of spending some time each day in devotional
study. 40 days is enough to begin a healthy and lasting habit. But secondly, I want people to focus
on each day. The focus is not on speed reading but on depth and comprehension.

6. How did this book originate?
I wanted to develop a tool that could be used by an entire church or individually to aid spiritual
growth. It can be used by an individual, or better yet, by small groups, or best by entire churches. I
developed it for my church to use in connection with our classes and worship services. I discovered,
however, that many others needed and wanted this same process of deepening their faith.
7. In your opinion, what could the modern church do better?
Today's church could emphasize spiritual discipleship and disciplines more. The church would be
well served to emphasize small groups like sunday school and cell groups more intently. We must
get back to a renewed emphasis on deepening our faith.
