Conservation Tip: Fireplace Facts
There’s no denying the beauty of a roaring fire. But
when it comes to home heat, your fireplace may be a major
source of heat loss. First of all, opening the damper is the
equivalent (or worse) of leaving your front door wide open.
Second, most of the heat from the fire goes right out the
chimney anyhow. And finally, most of the devices that
promise to throw more heat into your room still leave you
with a net heat loss.
The Solution? The most effective deterrent to heat loss is
a set of glass fireplace doors that can be opened when a fire
is blazing and closed when the fire is dying. But always
remember to give the fire enough oxygen to burn.

Holiday Candle
Safety Tips
Wood-Ridge Fire Chief
Anthony Gentile stated, “On
average, a candle fire in the
home is reported to a U.S.
fire department every 34 minutes.”
More than half of all candle
fires start when items that can
burn, such as furniture, mattresses, bedding, curtains, or
decorations, are too close to
the candle. The risk of a fatal
candle fire appears higher when
candles are used for light.
Chief Gentile offered these
candle safety tips:
• Consider using batteryoperated f lameless candles
which can look, smell, and feel
like real candles.
• Use sturdy, safe candleholders.
• Protect candle f lames
with glass chimneys or containers.
• Keep candles at least 12
inches from anything that can
burn.
• Never leave a burning
candle unattended.
• Put candles out when you
leave a room.
• Avoid using candles in
bedrooms and sleeping areas.
• Keep children and pets
away from burning candles.
• Be careful not to splatter wax when putting out a
candle.
• Never use a candle when
oxygen is present.
• Always use a flashlight,
not a candle, for emergency
lighting.
• Keep matches and lighters up high, out of reach of
children, preferably in a locked
cabinet. ###

I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas…
By Meteorologist Dan Ventola
As a little boy growing
up in Lodi, amongst the best
things in life to me was a good
snow storm and… Christmas!
To put the two together was a
dream!
A dream not often made
into reality. When you look at
the statistics, we have not had
too many white Christmases,
even years ago, despite what
you may “remember.”
Many say when we were
kids, we had more white Christmases, but I beg to differ. Now,
how do you define a white
Christmas you ask. Does it
mean: snow actually “falling”
on Christmas Day or does it
merely mean if you have snow
on the ground that it’s a white
Christmas. I think it’s more
the latter.
But as far as actually having snow “falling” on Christmas Day, here are the facts:
Since 1950, we have had 6
Christmases with snow actually falling and accumulating.
The years were (since 1950),
1962: 1,” 1966: 1,” 1969: 3,”
1975: 1,” 1976: 1” and just 6
years ago, in 2002, we had a
whopping 5 ½” on Christmas
Day!
Now, as far as technically
having a white Christmas from
…say some left over snow on
the ground from previous days
preceding Christmas Day…
well, that’s a stat this guy is too
busy to research ... but I will tell
you this, it’s a heck of a lot more
than just 6 Christmases. Probably around 15 or 20 “snow on
the ground-white Christmases”
since 1950.
This brings us to the question, will we have a white
Christmas this year?
Tough question to answer
as longer range forecasting for
an individual day is still a tough
nut to crack, that is a forecast
beyond, say… day 10.
Anyway, in my meteorological opinion, it will remain
colder than normal well into
a chunk of December. As you
know, it’s been colder than normal in Hasbrouck Heights and
Teterboro since the middle of
November and we have already
had a few snow events.
Given the type of weath-
er pattern we are in, I think
THIS Christmas holds a better
chance of either having snow
on the ground or, perhaps the
“magical snow actually falling”
on Christmas Day.
Now that I am not a kid
anymore, and it’s my business
to forecast, especially during
storms, I am not quite sure if
I want snow to fall on Christmas, because that means more
“work” for me. But, hey, now
that I think of it, I am still
a kid at heart, so… LET IT
SNOW, LET IT SNOW, LET
IT SNOW!

I am 8 years old. Some of my friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says “If you
see it in The Sun it’s so.” Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus?
Virginia O’Hanlon
Virginia,
Your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a
skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be
which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether
they be men’s or children’s are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere
insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as
measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.
Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity
and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest
beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus!
It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike
faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have
no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood
fills the world would be extinguished.
Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get
your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that
prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus.
The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see.
No Santa Claus! Thank God, he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from
now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to
make glad the heart of childhood.

HH Men’s Association
Christmas Tree Sale
The Hasbrouck Heights
Men’s Association will be selling Christmas Trees again this
Holiday Season at St. John the
Divine, at the corner of Franklin and Terrace.
They will be carrying an
array of trees of various sizes
and prices.
This sale has been a Hasbrouck Heights holiday tradition
for over twenty years.
The money raised goes to
the HHMA Scholarship Fund
that benefits graduating high
school seniors from Hasbrouck
Heights who want to attend
college.
The Hasbrouck Heights
Men’s Association wants to
thank area residents for their
on-going support of their sale
and they wish everyone a Happy Holiday Season. ###
Fire Chief Offers Safety
Tips for Christmas Trees
Hasbrouck Heights Fire
Chief Michael Ratkowski stated that, “Almost half (48%)
of home Christmas tree fi res
are caused by some type of
electrical failure or malfunction. Twenty-seven percent of
Christmas tree fires result from
a heat source placed too close
to the tree.
Two-thirds of home Christmas tree fires are reported in
December and 19% are reported in January.”
Chief Ratkowski offered
these tips regarding Christmas
tree safety:
• When decorating your
tree, always use lights listed
by a testing laboratory. Some
lights are designed only for
indoor or outdoor use, but not
both. Larger tree lights should
also have some type of reflector
rather than a bare bulb.
• Follow the manufacturer’s
instructions on how to use tree
lights. Any string of lights with
worn, frayed or broken cords or
loose bulb connections should
not be used. Connect no more
than three strands of push-in
bulbs and a maximum of 50
bulbs for screw-in bulbs.

• Always unplug Christmas
tree lights before leaving home
or going to bed.
• Bring outdoor electrical
lights inside after the holidays
to prevent hazards and extend
their life.
• Never use lit candles to
decorate a tree, and make sure
any lit candles in the room are
placed well away from tree
branches.
• Try to keep live trees as
moist as possible by giving
them plenty of water daily. Do
not purchase a tree that is dry
or dropping needles. Check for
fresh, green needles. And place
your tree in a sturdy tree stand
designed not to tip over.
• Children are fascinated
with Christmas trees. Keep a
watchful eye on them when
around the tree and do not let
them play with the wiring or
lights. Store matches and lighters up high, out of reach, preferably in a locked cabinet.
• Make sure the tree is at
least three feet (one meter)
away from any heat source,
such as fi replaces and radiators. Try to position the tree
near an outlet so that cords are
not running long distances. Do
not place the tree where it may
block exits.
• Safely dispose of the
tree when it begins dropping
needles. Dried-out trees are
highly flammable and should
not be left in a house or garage,
or placed against the house.

The book to be discussed
on Tuesday, December 16,
2008, is Fannie Flagg’s “A
Redbird Christmas” (2004),
a novel about a man, Oswald
T. Campbell, whose doctor
tells him for health purposes
to leave Chicago for warmer
weather.
He ends up in Lost River,
Alabama, which he finds to be
a strange, little, down-home
town with good neighbors and
a resident cardinal, called a
redbird by the townsfolk.
Copies of this book are
available at The Library.
All are welcome, whether
you have participated in such a

Buy-A-Ribbon
Feed The Hungry
As well as “Brightening
The Boulevard,” this annual appeal, offered by Bill O’Shea’s
Florist, has generated thousands of dollars every year to
benefit The Center for Food
Action.
A $10 contribution buys
a bright red ribbon with your
name on it, placed along the
Boulevard beginning Thanksgiving until Valentine’s Day.
This year, a banner promoting this annual holiday
tradition is scheduled to be
placed across The Boulevard
for approximately two weeks.
Contributors simply complete the “Buy-A-Ribbon -Feed The Hungry” form, listing
their name, family, memorial,
etc., with a limit of up to 30
characters.
Most ribbons are $10, but
generous folks can make a
$50 donation which provides
a special breakfast and traditional dinner for Christmas or
Hanukkah for a family in our
neighborhood.
Corporate donations of
$100 or more will receive a
unique red and gold ribbon.
Ribbon placement in Hasbrouck Heights is done by the
Knights of Columbus: Msgr.

Advent Waiting in a
Quickaholic Society
Active members of the Rosary Society of Corpus Christi
Church have been invited to “A
Christmas Social” to take place
on Thursday, December 11.
The evening will begin with
the celebration of Mass in the
Chapel at 5:15 p.m., followed
by a light supper in the school

The Christmas Stocking
undertaking for the benefit
of fifteen local children was
successfully completed at the
November meeting. As usual,
the response was outstanding,
and we thank all those who so
generously contributed to this
special project.
We encourage the women
of the parish to join the Rosary Society in prayer and
service. Members are required
to say one decade of the Rosary
daily, to attend monthly meetings (first Thursday after the
first Sunday of the month), to
pray the Rosary for deceased
members, and to participate
whenever possible in various
service projects. Simply come

Real Estate Insight
By Mary Ellen Courtney
The Ups & Downs of
Real Estate
As everybody knows, the
real estate market is cyclical.
We, who are in the business
nearly 30 years, have seen and
survived several housing downturns. In the late 70s and early
80s, mortgage rates were “off
the charts,” approaching, at one
point, close to 20% (!), putting
financing beyond the reach of
most home buyers. The housing market was hit again in the
80s thru the early 90s when
hundreds of savings & loans
collapsed. And once again in
the late 90s: the aftermath of
the dot-com crash, provoking
then, as now, another economic
crisis…
Today’s market decline
is unique inasmuch as prices
are low and -contrary to past
downturns -- interest rates (by
historical comparison) are also
low. The problem, I think, is
largely psychological: buyers
are scared to commit; they are
sitting by the sidelines, waiting
for the proverbial “bottom.”
Home prices in our Hasbrouck Heights/Wood-Ridge
area are steady but eroding
somewhat, with sales off perhaps 25 to 30% these last 18
months. There remains, sadly,
an oversupply of inventory in
our local housing market with
the DOM (days on the market
per the MLS) indicator actually
increasing.
In this very competitive
marketplace, two key elements
are crucial to a quick sale and
an alleviation of the current
housing back-log: Pricing
(derived from data, according
to fully adjusted comparable
recent sales) and Marketing
(the importance of evaluating a
real estate agency on its track
record & means to deliver).
And, in a declining market,
time is of the essence. No room
for error!

Cold Moon
The December full moon
appears on Friday, December
12, 2008, at 16:39 and is called
the “Full Cold Moon.”
According to “The Farmer’s Almanac,” this month the
winter cold fastens its grip, and
nights are at their longest and
darkest. It is also called the
“Moon Before Yule.” The term
“Long Night Moon” is a double
appropriate name because the
midwinter night is indeed long,
and because the Moon is above
the horizon for a long time.
The midwinter full Moon has
a high trajectory across the
sky because it is opposite a
low Sun. Other names for this
moon include “Full Long Night
Moon.”
The Native American Indians of the northern and eastern
United States kept track of
the seasons by giving a name
to each recurring full moon.
European settlers followed the
custom. ###

Tae Kwon Do Champions
“Xcel” at NY Tournament!
The 2008 Chung Ma Tae
Kwon Do Championships were
held on Saturday, November 8th, at John F. Kennedy
High School in Katonah, New
York. Students from Xcel Tae
Kwon Do Center in Hasbrouck
Heights competed at the annual
event and returned with great
success.
First-time competitor, Sara
Herron, was the surprise of
the day. She captured 2 gold
medals with an outstanding
performance in both the forms
and breaking events. Five year
old Enrique Castro performed
flawlessly to win 1 gold and
2 bronze medals. Enrique’s
Mom, Lana, also competed
at the tournament making it a
family event. She won 2 silver
medals in the adult divisions.
Seven year old Dante
Milne had the toughest day of
the competition. He fought intensely through 4 hard-hitting
opponents to capture the gold
medal. After sparring, Dante
contributed to his medal collection by coming home with gold
in the forms event and a bronze
in board breaking.
The most exciting moment
of the tournament took place
with Gillian Calbi. After the
preliminary board breaking
competition, she ended up in
a two-way tie with another
girl for 2nd Place. The two
girls were allowed to perform
just one technique as a tiebreaker.
The first girl set up her
board and with a leap, broke it
in half with a swift kick. Then
it was Gillian’s turn.
Even though this was only
her second competition, Gillian
seemed rather calm. She had
her choice of kicks but chose
the exact same one her opponent performed just moments
earlier.
Gillian requested that the
board be held significantly
higher then where the other
girl had placed it. Gillian set in
her position, took a deep breath
and then jumped in the air, accompanied by a fierce yell. By
the time she landed on the floor
everyone knew the silver medal
was hers. It was a proud moment for the Calbi Family.
Congrat ulations to all
the students from Xcel Tae
Kwon Do Center in Hasbrouck
Heights for a job well done!

Veterans’ Salute
Centuries of American Veterans Remembered
November 11, 2008
“A Wing and a Prayer”
The Army Air Forces Historical Association, an interactive, living history museum
dedicated to honoring World
War II aviators, performed a
special theatrical presentation
of “A Wing and a Prayer” on
Sunday, November 9 at the
Campbell-Christie House in
River Edge. The event, in
conjunction with the Bergen
County Historical Society,
was part of its Veterans Day
Salute called “USO Victory
Canteen.”
AAFHA members, many
of them Army Air Force Veterans and dressed in period
uniforms, provided visitors a
chance to roll back the hands
of time and experience life during the war years. A display of
aviation artifacts also provided
visitors with a hands-on connection to Veterans.
“A Wing and a Prayer” is
a theatrical performance that,
according to its author, aviation
author Al Parisi of Wyckoff,
incorporates a number of elements that brings audience
members up close and personal
with the experiences of World
War II airmen. It is a compilation of vignettes taken from
interviews conducted with Veterans as well as published historical anecdotes and era songs,
all poignant and stirring.
“Over the years, whether
they were first-hand accounts
or just pieces that I’d read that
touched me deeply, the bits
and pieces that make up ‘Wing
and a Prayer’ come from those
deep-rooted emotions of Veterans that are born in times of
war,” said Parisi. “And those
experiences are just as true today for those serving overseas
in Afghanistan and Iraq as they
were for those fighting in Europe and the Pacific Theater,”
he adds.
They range from f liers’
recollections of fear and dread
to the Andrews Sisters’ tale of
the war’s end and jubilation.
And there is a series of letters home from one young airman to his mother, masking the
danger and focusing on easing
her fears for her son’s safety.
“The Donovan letters, from
a 21-year old B-17 bomber pilot,” says Parisi, “are particularly touching and poignant because “there’s this young man
USS Arizona Relics Unveiled at USS Ling
During a dedication ceremony on Sunday, November
9, 2008, the New Jersey Naval
Museum, home of the USS
Ling (SS-297), unveiled two
relics from the USS Arizona
BB 39.
The program began with
Tom Conlon, National President, Emeritus SubVets, Inc.
There was The Presentation
of Colors and the Pledge of
Allegiance. The National Anthem was sung by Wayne Behr,
with an Invocation by Chester
Skrocki, SubVet WWII.
Basil Kio, SubVet WWII
provided welcoming remarks,
with a dedication by John M.
Carbone Esq. Michael Melfi,
Mayor of Hackensack and Dennis McNerney, Bergen County
Executive, made comments.
“Amazing Grace” was
played by bagpipper Eamonn
Radburn, Pipe Sergeant for
the Bergen County Firefighters Pipe Band. Benediction
was given by Gerald Dougherty with concluding music
by Wayne Behr. The program
was hosted by the Submarine
Memorial Association.
The Arizona was sunk during an early morning air raid
by the Imperial Japanese Navy
on Sunday, 7 December 1941.
The sinking of the Arizona and
the loss of 1,177 crew members
made it the largest casualty in
the history of the US Navy.
After the dedication, the
artifacts went on public display,
one in the museum and the
other in the wardroom of the
USS Ling (SS-297). For more

responsible for the lives of 10
men, in the midst of the worst
of the air war, and his letters
are like those of a boy writing home from summer camp,
longing for his loved ones that
he misses dearly, and not letting
on that, for him, death can be
on the doorstep.”
The River Edge performance, he said, was particularly meaningful for him because his 21 year old son, Chris
Parisi, who just graduated from
the renowned Lee Strasberg
Theatre School in Manhattan,
took on the Donovan role.
“He brought great insight
to the role, because it’s a young
man, his age, with the weight
of the world on his shoulders
trying to shelter his loved ones
from the war, like countless
others are doing today, only
with e-mails and cell phone
calls from the battle zone,”
said Parisi.
Why the performance?
“Because we read about sacrifices and casualty figures each
and every day about the war,
and unless we put a face to
them, we will never learn that
war exacts a far deeper toll than
any of us can ever imagine,”
says Parisi. ###

Popular Veterans Day Creed
Let us never forget those brave men and women who fought
to preserve our freedoms over the centuries:
It was the Veteran, not the preacher, who has given us freedom of religion.
It was the Veteran, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press.
It was the Veteran, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech.
It was the Veteran, not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to assemble.
It was the Veteran, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial.
It was the Veteran, not the politician, who has given us the right to vote.
It was the Veteran, not the campus oganizer, who has given us freedom to demonstrate.
It is the Veteran, who salutes the Flag,
It is the Veteran, who serves under the Flag and whose coffin is draped by the flag,
who allows the protester to burn the flag.
All gave some -- Some gave all
Under the direction of Student Council Moderator, Miss
Lynda Seeley, members of the
Assumption School Student
Council organized a school-wide
commemoration of our nation’s
Veterans.
Students first expressed their
gratitude to the Veterans for
their service through a “Letter
to A Veteran” program. In conjunction with this, the Student
Council and Miss Seeley held
a special ceremony on Veterans
Day to honor the Veterans and
thank them personally for their
sacrifices.
The service was attended by
many local Veterans as well as
soldiers who are currently serving in the Armed Forces.
Principal Heather Muller
opened the ceremony, and the
Student/Council co-president
provided weloming remarks.
Shannon Rodriguez and
Freddy Dressel, Student Council
8th Grade Representatives, led
the Pledge of Allegiance. The
National Anthem followed. Fr.
Thomas Kelly gave the Benediction.
Sergeant Justin Zajicek gave
a moving speech about his devotion to his country and his experience in the Marines.
The observance included a
poem, “Veterans Day Creed”
paying tribute to the men and
women of the military, read
by Nicolas Lamendola, Tyler
Zoltowski and Nicholas Christi.
Speeches were written and
delivered by Assumption School
Eighth Graders Nicholas Picinic
and Gabriella Costa.
Everyone sang “God Bless
America,” followed by “Taps.”
The program concluded with
the Student Council walking
over and shaking hands with the
Veterans. ###

Corps, community and elected
officials.
The highlight of the program was when Veterans stood
up and were recognized.
The school children read
essays they had written about
Vets. Ken and Pam Schwarz,
whose son Michael, was killed
in Iraq last year, attended. A
student, Foster, read an essay
saluting Michael.
The school band played
several patriotic songs.
Following the assembly,
guests went to the fi rst floor
hallway to view a 4’ x 20 foot
flag painted on the wall facing
a display memorializing Carlstadt Veterans from all wars.
Light refreshments followed. Story and photos by

On November 11, 2008,
at 11:00 a.m., the Carlstadt
Veterans from Post 9149 held
a brief ceremony at Carlstadt

The program began with
the Pledge of Allegiance,
Chaplain’s prayer and the
Commander’s words commemorating Veterans. Mayor

“Saints” and Preview Day
Defined a Busy November
at Corpus Christi School
19th Annual
Lego Event
On Friday, November 7,
2008, nearly 100 children from
the community participated in
the 19th Annual Lego Night at
The Hasbrouck Heights Free
Public Library.
Mimi Hui, Library Director, stated, “The children have
been excited about this event
for weeks.”
Judges for the evening
included the Hon. Mayor Rose
Heck and members of the New
Jersey Chapter of the American Institute of Architects
(AIANJ), Constance Gill and
Jerome Eben. Ms. Gill has
been a judge at this event for
nearly a decade and this year
brought along Mr. Eben, who
is completing his term as the
immediate Past President of
AIANJ.
The children were divided
according to their grade levels
and multiple winners were
chosen from each group.
Some of t he ch ild ren
worked individually while
others combined their efforts
making whole town plans.
In little more than an hour
and half, the children were able
to create all sorts of building
types with the Lego blocks that
they had brought from home.
Both Ms. Gill and Mr.
Eben used the time to explain
some basic architectural and
construction terms to the children as they walked around
The Library and visited each
group.
The participants waited
with great anticipation throughout the evening as the judges
wove their way through the
various projects built and de-
The month of November at
Corpus Christi School featured
“Saints” and the prayers that
many 8th Grade students made
to them as they prepared to take
one of the most important tests
of their lives.
One of the most treasured
traditions at Corpus Christ
School took place on November 3rd when the 3rd Grade
participated in the All Saints
Procession.
Every child picked a Saint,
did research on them and then
dressed in the appropriate
clothing for their Saint. They
then prepared a short presentation for their family and friends
in the Chapel.
A 12 noon dismissal was
scheduled for Election Day.
Preview Day took place
on Thursday, November 6th.
This was an Open House, for
all families interested in seeing
Corpus Christi School (PreK3
and PreK4) “in action.” Private
guided tours were available
for both the Early Childhood
Learning Center and the K-8
building. These tours took
place from 9 – 11 a.m. and 1-2
p.m.
On November 7th, the 8th
Grade took the COOP (Cooperative Admissions Examination Program). It is this test,
along with their middle school
liberated.
Children’s Librarian, Rosalie Nickles, noted, “This is one
of the longest running programs
at The Library, and has grown
in popularity with each coming
year. It’s been wonderful to see
the creativity and imagination
of the children.”
Many members of AIANJ
participate in similar events
around the state and volunteer
to speak at Career Days at local
schools. Last year, as part of
the celebration of their founding in 1857, AIANJ created a
program called the 6th Grade
Initiative.
Mr. Eben stated, “We had
more than 200 members speak
to nearly 10,000 6th Graders
around the state about livable
communities followed by a
time where these children
could work as a team to design
their own livable community
based on a kit that each architect brought to the schools.”
Part of the AIANJ mission is to support the public’s
understanding of architecture
through advocacy, education
and service. For more information, go to www.aia-nj.org

Despite the drizzle, cold

rainstorm on the morning of
October 25th, the Hasbrouck
Heights High School Marching Band hosted their annual
marching band competition,
“Music and Pageantry Under
the Lights.”
Bands from the tri-state

braving unrelenting winds and
cold rain to put on a fabulous
show. As hosts, Hasbrouck
Heights did not compete, but
did perform in exhibition.
The bands were arranged
in groups by size: They included: (Group 1) Weehawken,
Hacket tstow n, Waldwick;
(Group 2) Glen Ridge, Memorial High School -- West New
York; (Group 3) North Bergen;
(Group 5) Elizabeth, West
Milford and Tottenville High
School -- Staten Island.
T he aud ience, havi ng
braved the threatening weather,
showed its appreciation for the
marching bands’ performances with thunderous applause
across the field.
Obtained with the help of
generous sponsors, trophies
and framed plaques were presented by senior band members,
Mayor Rose Heck and Board of
Education and Council Members to the winning bands.
The Hasbrouck Heights
Music Parents Association has
held this event for 20 years.
They thanked all of the families, friends and sponsors for
their support in another successful competition! ###

Tips for a Stress-Free Holiday
Reduce your holiday stress
level and increase your enjoyment of this holiday season.
• Don’t try to do all the
cooking yourself. It’s fun and
less stressful when you ask
your guests to contribute something special to the meal. They
will join in the fun and you’ll
get a break!
• Try to avoid as many
holiday treats as you can, so
you don’t end up stressing over
potential weight-gain come
January.
• Nothing is ever perfect,
so stop worrying about things
that don’t matter.
• Invite people to your gatherings and then figure some of
them will have other commitments. Enjoy the people who
do attend, instead of worrying
over how many sent regrets.
• You don’t have to accept
every invitation you receive.
• Expect delays. Allow
extra time for all your errands
this month. Things just seem to
be more hectic in December. If
you are mentally prepared for it
in advance, it won’t stress you
as much.
• Simplify your life. You
don’t have to decorate each
room of the house. If you have
children, let them help you
decorate.
• Choose which traditions
are important to you and forget
the rest. Start some new ones of
your own this year and leave
the old ones behind.
• Do something special for
someone else this time of the
year. Donate to a worthy cause
or help a needy family. This is
a great way to teach children
compassion.
• Remember to relax. Take
care of yourself. Eat well, exercise, and enjoy some quiet time
for yourself. ###

Fitness Tips
By Joann Glussich
Take The Pressure
Off Getting Fit
Instead of pressuring yourself into losing 50 pounds in
two months, make it your goal
to drop one pound a week. All
it takes are small changes in
your daily lifestyle. To shed a
pound a week, burn 3,500 extra calories. Try the following
three steps:
Record your normal weekly exercise – look at everything
from walking to participating
in sports to exercising in the
gym. This is your starting
point. You need to burn an additional 3,500 calories on top of
your normal weekly exercise.
Record your normal weekly food intake – calculate the
total number of calories you eat
in an average day. You should
work at slowly decreasing that
number.
Remember, we are going
for a 3,500 calorie deficit each
week – this can be done by

At the last meeting of the
Central Bergen Chapter 418,
AARP members collected and
donated $318 to the Tomorrow’s
Children Fund at Hackensack
University Medical Center.
They hope that this money
will help in the diagnosis and
treatment of children who have
cancer and/or blood disorders.
At the meeting, they discussed plans for the Annual
Holiday Party which will be
held on Friday, December 12th,
at the M & M Building. The
food will be catered by Paul’s
Market in Hackensack. They
also discussed planned trips
to the Little Firehouse Theatre
in Oradell to see the musical,
“The Melody Lingers On” in
March 2009 and the comedy,
“The Sunshine Boys” in May
2009.
The entertainment for the
afternoon was by Bruce McNichols, who is the leader of
the long-running Smith Street
Society Jazz Band. He has
appeared on radio, TV and
in concerts from El Paso to
New York. He has worked or
performed for John McEnroe,
Nelson Doubleday, Malcolm
Forbes, Paul Newman and
Conan O’Brien.
While he strummed on
his banjo, Mr. McNichols sang
songs of the Roaring Twenties
and Thirties. The nostalgic
journey encouraged the members to sing along to such songs
as: “Ain’t She Sweet?,” “Baby
Face,” “Bye, Bye, Blackbird,”
“Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue,”
“Ida, Sweet as Apple Cider,”
“Toot, Toot, Tootsie Good Bye”
and “April Showers.”
He played, sang and shared
anecdotes about many more
songs from that period of time.
All members enjoyed the trip
back to their youth. Story and

Leisure Club Re-Elects Officers
The members of the Leisure Club showed their support
and confidence in their present
officers by unanimously electing them to serve another two
year term.
The officers are President
John Fitzin, Vice President,
Peter Gallo, Secretary, Ann
Fuhro and Treasurer, Dorothy
Fitzin. This is the third two
year term for all of them. The
officers will take their oath of
office at the Annual Holiday
Party on December 10th.
President John announced
that the present members of
the board will again serve with
the officers. They are Joseph
Barnao, Michael Cahill, David
Davidowicz, Charles Gaal, and
Edward Sosnowski.
He also announced that the
club is in need of a member
to be in charge of the 2009
Holiday Party, as well as, any
overnight trip.
The program speaker for
the meeting was Ms. Linda
Cross from the Division of Senior Services in Hackensack.
Since most of the members
have had other speakers talk
about Medicare Part D, Ms.
Cross touched on it brief ly.
She did ask those who still had
questions or concerns to meet
with her after the meeting.
Her discussion concentrated on the programs offered
by the Department of Human
Services. Ms. Cross elaborated
on the various Bergen County
services that provide information and assistance available to
seniors, homebound, disabled
and the needy. She encouraged
members to contact her office if
they needed more information
on any of the programs listed
in the brochure that she distributed. She guaranteed that all
phone calls would have a live
person answering them.
The refreshments served
at the meeting were danishes
purchased from Smiley’s Bakery (next door to Fisher’s).
They were large, fresh and

All Contractors Must
Register With the DCA
New Jersey’s Contractor’s
Registration Act (Act) became
effective in December 2005.
The Act is broadly conceived
and liberally interpreted in
favor of the consumer.
To an unsuspecting home
improvement contractor, even a
technical violation can produce
financial ruin.
Some of the work covered
by the Act includes driveways, sidewalks, pools, patios,
landscaping, fences, porches,
windows, doors, kitchens,
bathrooms, fi re and security
protection devices, HVAC,
water systems, roofing and siding, carpeting, etc. Exceptions
to the Act include people who
work on their own properties.
Companies that work in the
home-improvement industry
must register with the DCA
(Registration Responsibility)
and maintain general liability insurance in the minimum
amount of $500,000 per occurrence.
By the terms of the Act
every person or company who
makes, sells or advertises home
improvements must file an application with the DCA and
register annually thereafter.
In most cases, a Contractor
will be able to complete the
registration application and
disclosure statement without
much difficulty.
In those instances, however, where the information
requested may have a negative
influence on an application for
registration, the Contractor applicant should engage an attorney to help with the process.
In either case, the applicant
must be truthful, because a
breach of this responsibility
can cause a revocation or suspension of the H.I. Contractor’s
registration, a criminal prosecution, or liability under the
CFA.

Yes, It’s True!
If you or a family member have been arrested for a
DWI or a drug related offense, there is a good likelihood
that you will be convicted, and if you are, you may be
subjected to a term of imprisonment, a significant license
loss, a large fine and other consequences that can seriously affect the stability of your lives. The experience
can be so mind-numbing that your first reaction
is to succumb to the government’s accusations.

TEB “Pledge To The Community” Update
At Teterboro Airport on
October 28, 2008, the Port Authority of New York and New
Jersey, Congressman Steve
Rothman and officials representing the aviation industry,
provided an update marking
the two-year anniversary of
the “Pledge to the Community”
that was announced on October
4, 2006.
Those five pledges were:
1. Reducing Stage II (the
noisiest jets) operations.
2. Reducing non-essential
nighttime operations from 11
p.m. to 6 a.m.
3. Keeping large aircraft
(100,000 lb. weight limit) from
operating at Teterboro.
4. Making safety improvements.
5. Enhancing and refining
security procedures.
Speakers during the hourlong press conference included:
Port Authority Deputy
Executive Director Susan
Bass Levin and Port Authority Chairman Anthony Coscia
expressing concerns about the
quality of life in the area communities and working together
with the industry group. NetJets
President James Christiansen
expressed NetJets’ cooperation
in the program.
TEB Working Group CoChair James K. Coyne stated
they are looking for new ideas
and applying creative problemsolving solutions.
A report published by the
TEB Working Group outlined
their 2007 efforts. Highlights
include:
Getting The Word Out
1. An outreach effort to the
aviation community explaining
the program. This included attending major industry conventions, handing out over 8,000
Pledges to the Community
brochures and more than 3,000
Teterboro Airport Quiet Flying Pilot Handbooks, briefing
nearly 400 flight crews and
departments on Teterboro’s
noise abatement procedures
as well as setting up a Speakers Bureau. (To arrange for a
speaker, call 201-807-4020.)
Additionally, Net Jets,
TEB’s largest single operator
of aircraft, sent letters to 6,200
fractional owners informing
them of the voluntary nighttime
curfew.
Noise Levels and
Complaints Fall
2. Stage II operations declined 24%, from 6,121 in
2006 to 4,652 in 2007. Nighttime operations declined 6.6%,
from 14,833 in 2006 to 13,858
in 2007. Aircraft movement
declined 2.8% from 187,300 in
2006 to 182,101 in 2007. Noise
complaints dropped 22% from
894 in 2006 to 696 in 2007.
In 2007, the Teterboro
noise monitor system recorded
average day/night noise levels
below 50 decibels in Hasbrouck
Heights and below 55dB in
Moonachie and Hackensack.
Carlstadt recorded 57dB.
Prior to September 2001,
system-wide readings ranged
between 51-61dB; the range is
now 48-58dB.
The “three strikes and
you’re out” rule -- in 2007,
four aircraft were banned, 92
first-violations and 11 second
violations with warning letters
sent to 56 operators.
Safety & Security
a #1 Priority
3. Teterboro Airport has
made major strides in increasing security measures, adding new safety programs and
developing initiatives to keep
operations, employees and
passengers as safe and secure
as possible.
