MESSAGE
from the
General Manager
The most wonderful time of the year
is almost here! I can see it everywhere around the mall. There are the
obvious clues—our beautiful holiday
décor going up, our spectacular Ice
Palace being constructed—and all of
the fun and spirited displays that our
retailers have created. But I also see
the holiday spirit in more subtle ways.
I see people purchasing gifts to donate to charities that support the less
fortunate. I hear shoppers wishing
everyone—even those they’ve never
met before—happy holidays. Maybe
it’s me, but I feel like during the holiday season, people laugh louder and
smile brighter. But the best part of
the holiday season is the excitement
I see on the faces of our youngest
guests. For children, the holidays are
truly magical! That’s why our team
works so hard to create our awesome
Ice Palace. For all the Florida kids
who’ve never experienced a northern
winter, they will love our falling snow,
the chilly Ice Throne and making an
icy handprint! While their northern
cousins may do these things every
day, for kids around here, it’s pretty
exciting. After your Ice Palace visit,
why not stop off at Starbucks for a
rich and delicious cup of hot chocolate. Make the day special. Do some
holiday shopping together. Don’t rush
around—relax, laugh, make memories
and enjoy the moment.
Happy Holidays!
Sincerely,
Marc Philippe Strich
Ice Palace 2015
Beginning November 6th, visitors to The
Mall at Wellington Green will be transported
to a winter wonderland, when they step
inside the spectacular holiday Ice Palace.
Featuring a 30-foot ice dome with falling
snow, a light show and interactive fun for all
ages, this year the free exhibit also delights
with a 360-degree arctic immersion, via
breathtaking video footage of artic animals.
Visitors can also marvel at the larger-than-
life snow globes, leave an icy handprint and
sit on the chilly Ice Throne. The icy adventure culminates with a visit to Santa and a
special cookie plate gift from Santa.
Every child who visits Santa will also receive a special offer from Lion Country Safari
to visit their park during the holidays.
The Ice Palace is sponsored locally by
Wellington Regional Medical Center.
Hot Ideas for Cool
Holiday Gifts!
You may still be working on your Thanksgiving menu, but
the kids have other things on their minds. Once their
Halloween costumes are packed away and all that’s left of
the candy are a couple wrappers, their little minds are busy
working up a holiday gift list! So what are the hot items
this holiday season? This year, many of them come from the
blockbuster movies being released during the holiday
season. Here are some ideas we think they’ll like!
The Good Dinosaur at JC Penney
Kids have always been intrigued with
dinosaurs. But now that the new
Disney movie, The Good Dinosaur is
coming out, their prehistoric dino love
has grown by leaps and gigantasaurus
bounds! If your little one is begging for
some dino-wear, head to JC Penney.
They have a cool collection of movie
tees, hoodies, sweatpants and slippers
to fit your favorite preschoolers. Plus,
they have awesome play sets that feature some of the movies coolest characters. You gotta check ‘em out!
The Peanuts Movie at Hallmark
Are you feeling nostalgic? So many of us
grew up watching Charlie Brown stumble through the various holidays, that
just hearing that familiar music brings
back fond memories. This season, your
kids can also enjoy the magic of those
beloved Peanuts characters. Why? The
Peanuts Movie opens in November and
makes the perfect family outing. And
once the new generation falls in love
with these characters, you can head to
Hallmark at The Mall at Wellington
Green where they carry a huge variety
of Peanuts gifts. From a cuddly stuffed
Snoopy to colorful Peanuts mugs, calendars, ornaments, wrapping paper, cards
and so much more, you’ll find it all here.
Then, check out Peanuts with a technological twist! Check out the collection of
light-up characters. Each one wirelessly connects with all of their pals (sold
separately) and together, they put on a
synchronized light and sound show. It’s
pretty awesome and will certainly put
the whole family in the holiday spirit.
Star Wars at Hot Topic
Has the latest Star Wars movie, The
Force Awakens, caught on in your
house? If it has, and you have a Star
Wars fan, head to Hot Topic at The
Mall at Wellington Green! They have an
extensive line of everything Star Wars!
Here, you’ll find all kinds of cool Star
Wars-themed clothes, like hoodies, tee
shirts, sweatshirts, hats,
bathrobes, watches, jewelry, backpacks and more.
Decorate their room with
comforters, figures, cups—
the list goes on! Whatever
Star Wars-themed item
they want, you’re sure to
find it here!
Skateboards at BC Surf & Sport
They may be too young for a car—but
not too young to have a set of wheels!
Head to BC Surf & Sport at The Mall
at Wellington Green, and you’ll think
you’ve entered an art gallery instead
of a store! The array of skateboards is
mind boggling, with every color in the
rainbow and tons of themes to choose
from. Whether they are a fan of Batman, Superman, Star Wars—or just love
a bright, modern design, it’s all here
for the choosing. And you can pick up
all the gear that goes along with the
board, including pads, a helmet, gloves
and shoes. Give them something fun to
do this Winter Break with a cool, new
skateboard!

Allowances
Help Children $AVE!
Having allowances can help children
understand the concept of budgeting and
saving, but you have to teach them.
If you decide to give an allowance, start
one as soon as your children start recognizing money’s worth—kids do this fairly
early. Janet Bodnar, deputy editor of
Kiplinger’s personal finance magazine in
Washington, D.C., stresses two points in
her book “Dollars & Sense for Kids”:
• Don’t give an allowance until children are old enough
to manage it, or until your children are at least six
years old. There’s no need to rush things and preschoolers generally don’t understand the abstract idea
of money anyway. Once children start first grade they
begin learning about money in school, so they know if
they get a $1 bill each week, it’s equivalent in value to
ten dimes or four quarters.
• Keep the system simple so you can manage it. “Denying kids an allowance doesn’t make it easier to limit
the amount of money they get their hands on,” says
Bodnar. Because most children will get the money out
of parents anyway, it’s better to teach them how to
manage it themselves than allow them to nickel and
dime you to death. Plus, using an allowance gives
parents and children more control over the children’s
finances.

Renaissance Charter School at Summit
Celebrates Culture and Diversity!
Students attending schools with diverse populations have the privilege
of developing an understanding of the
many perspectives of people from various backgrounds, as well as learning
how to live in a multicultural, multiethnic environment. Yet, as public schools
see increasing diversity among faculty
and students, there is a growing need
to develop effective methods of helping
all students succeed academically and
to teach them how to get along with
each other in and out of the classroom.
Teachers and administration are faced
with the challenge of making instruction “culturally responsive” for all
students while not favoring one group
over another. With over 1100 students,
teachers, and staff at Renaissance
Charter School at Summit, we are overflowing with amazing diversity, and
we love to learn about and share in the
celebration of our various cultures!
We asked the students at Summit why
it’s important to learn about and share
in one another’s cultural similarities
and differences, and here’s what the
Summit Superstars had to say:
• Knowledge leads to tolerance which leads to acceptance
• You need diversity for gaining a fresh perspective on the
lives of others in your school and community
• Sharing in different cultures helps in overcoming
ignorance and prejudice
• Learning about our diversity helps us to celebrate our
differences and similarities which unite and educate us
• Sharing in our cultures allows us to learn about others
perspectives which helps us to walk in one another’s shoes
• Students must have an understanding and appreciation
of other cultures through learning about each other’s
backgrounds and heritage
• We can not only learn about others, we can gain a sense of
pride for the diversity of our own culture
• It helps us to understand other students and their
backgrounds which helps the school community’s growth
Way to go, Summit Superstars…you all rock!

Everything’s Better
with Chocolate on it!
With the holidays coming, most kids have
visions of the gifts they want floating
around in their heads. Whether it’s the
latest toy, video game, outfit or something
else, they’ve spent time thinking about
what they want. In a world that thrives
on materialism and “getting,” how do we
teach our children about giving?
So what can your kids make that the receiver
will actually enjoy and not hide on a back
shelf in the closet? How about chocolate?
Chocolate is a popular gift during the holidays, and your kids can put their own spin
on it, make beautiful, delicious gifts that the
receiver enjoys—and have fun in the process.
To get started, you need to decide what you
will use for the coating. You can go in one of
two directions. You can buy an easy-to-use
product like Almond Bark or others you can
find at the grocery store that is designed to
melt easily. Almond Bark is a chocolate flavored candy coating product. All you have to
do is melt it in the microwave and dip away.
If you’re more of a purest and want to use
real chocolate, that’s great, but you will have
to temper the chocolate and that requires
more work and more patience from your
children. Both products can taste great, but
require different levels of expertise.
Salty Treats for Dipping:
Once you’ve chosen your dipping product,
it’s time to decide what the kids will enjoy
dipping in to it. Have fun and be creative!
Here are some ideas, by category, that your
kids—and the recipients may enjoy. But
don’t stop here. Use your imagination!
• Potato Chips • Nuts of all types
• Popcorn
Healthy Treats for Dipping
• Dried Fruit (Try apricots, raisins, dried
cranberries, pineapple chunks)
• Fresh Fruit (Try bananas, strawberries,
pineapple, apples, oranges)
Sweets for Dipping:
• Brownies - baked and then put on a
popsicle stick
• Chocolate Chip Cookies (home baked or
packaged)
• Oreos
• Rice Krispy Treats
• Macaroons
• Graham Crackers (Try putting marshmallow fluff between two and then dipping
for a s’more-like effect.)
• Butter Crackers (Try putting two together
with peanut butter, almond butter, jam or
Nutella.)
• Gummy Candies
• Marshmallows
Chilly
Sillies!
Q: What‘s the best way to eat a turkey?
A: Gobble, gobble it up!
Q: What did the snowman name his burger joint?
A: Icebergs!
Q: Why was the drummer so happy on Thanksgiving?
A: He got the drumsticks!
After you dip, set up trays of sprinkles,
chopped nuts or crushed candy to dip the
chocolate in while it’s still wet. Then, place
on wax paper and put in the refrigerator
until it hardens.
Another fun part of the project is having
your children go to the craft store with you to
choose wrappings for their gifts. Here, you’ll
find a wide variety of fun and festive choices,
from gift boxes and bakery boxes to decorative bags and more. Add bows, ribbons, tissue
and holiday tags to make the gifts special.
Have your kids pack up a selection of each
person’s favorites in a wonderful package
and bring them with you when you deliver
it. Seeing their recipient’s joy will
encourage the habit of giving.
