Wordsmith Geets Vincent
Leaves Inspiring Legacy
Geets Vincent was a newspaperwoman,
traveler, editor, teacher and connoisseur of
words. For so many, those various roles were
part of her all-encompassing passion for
people and her gift for helping them unlock
their own talents to share their stories.

Revisiting The Four C’s of
Selling Is Savvy and Sensible
Like anything in life, when you do something
for a long time, many aspects become habit;
however, in business, it can be beneficial for
you and your business if you get back to the
basics from time to time, explains Wayne
Jordan in his Behind the Gavel column.

FROM THE EDITOR
Antoinette (Toni) Rahn
What kind of legacy are you living today,
to leave tomorrow? I know that seems like an
odd question, and a bit philosophical, but as
I spent time putting together this issue the
thought continually rolled through my mind.
It first came to mind as I was reading a tribute/
expanded obituary for Geets Vincent. If you’ve
been a subscriber of Antique Trader for a
number of years, it’s likely you’ll recognize her
name. Ms. Vincent was a contributor of this
magazine for years, prior to suffering a stroke in 2010. Her passing on Sept. 7, 2014, prompted Chris Smith, a columnist with
Ms. Vincent’s local newspaper, The Press Democrat of Santa
Rosa, Calif., to pen a tribute to her.
Although I did not know Ms. Vincent personally, I definitely
wish I had. As Smith stated, she was a newspaperwoman, traveler, editor, teacher and connoisseur of words. The sentiments
shared by former students, peers, friends and family of Ms.
Vincent confirmed all of those roles, illustrating the significant
impact she had on the people whose paths she crossed in her lifetime. I don’t know if she had ever given any thought to the kind
of legacy she would leave. My guess is that it never really crossed
her mind. However, in seeking out ways to enjoy the things she
was most passionate about, discovering new things, people and
experiences to be passionate about, and sharing and encouraging that in others, she touched the lives of more people than she
may ever have realized. To learn more about this unassuming,
yet iconic wordsmith, turn to page 20.
In keeping with the theme of legacy, I think some of you may
recognize some aspects of your family’s legacies represented in
the cover story about sewing implements. I don’t pretend to be
skillful in the techniques associated with sewing or stitching
anything, but I certainly appreciate the workmanship and design of the tools used to create useful and beautiful sewn items.
Plus, thanks to contributor Melody Amsel-Arieli’s research, I
now know the formal name of the thing we called “grandma’s
packet of sewing fi x-it stuff ”. For the record, the proper name is
necessaires. Check out page 22 to delve into the world of sewing
implements.

READER’S LETTERS
Calling for more common sense
I am writing in response to your
article “Why Wal-Mart is good for your
antiques business.” (Aug. 20, 2014, issue).
In the article authored by Wayne
Jordan, he states, “Statistics are a business writers favorite device … it’s too
easy to lie with statistics.” He further
states, “The conclusions surrounding
that Wal-Mart destroys small business
issue are based on statistics that are, in
my opinion, lies.” So how does Mr. Jordan prove his point? With statistics …
common sense or your brain.
How many businesses are no longer
in your city/town since Wal-Mart moved
in or expanded to a Superstore? In my
city of Odessa, Texas, many, many small
businesses that were here are long gone.
I also grew up in Anchorage, Alaska,
for 25 years, and once Wal-Mart moved
in, many, many small businesses that
couldn’t compete with “Goliath” (as Mr.
Jordan puts it) quickly disappeared. For
this reason, as well as many other numerous documented greedy habits Wal-Mart
participates in, I haven’t shopped at a
Wal-Mart in 13 years.
Mr. Jordan says, “In commerce, Goliath wins every time.” Wrong. If you
look at what is happening within our
food market industry, you will notice
this is not the case. Food companies are
dropping unhealthy and sometimes
poisonous ingredients from their foods
at a dramatic rate because consumers
are demanding healthy food. David
is beating Goliath every day; we control commerce by what we spend our
money on.
It’s clear this pro-Wal-Mart article is
a propaganda piece and I would like to
kindly request that the Antique Trader
magazine publish articles that pertain
to antiques and not this nonsense, or
this will be the last time I subscribe to
this magazine.
For a further common sense study,
check out the documentary “Wal-Mart:
The High Cost of Low Price,” and a positive healthy news site, Foodbabe.com

eBay’s policies prompt change
I read the recent repeat of my article
with some interest. As an update, I have,
after many years of being a very faithful
eBayer, begun to use them less and less. The
problems with eBay is such that it is much
easier to use other sites such as Invaluable
and Amazon. I find that prices are much higher and
quality is not supported by eBay, as they
now require buyers to return fake items
to the seller, where they are resold. Also,
the issue of deleting negative feedback has
taken to a new and interesting level. I left
negative feedback for the fake item I had
received, and it was deleted. When I in-
quired as to why, I was told I used the name
eBay in the feedback, which is against eBay
policy. Therefore, the feedback was deleted.
This was a policy I had never heard of. I further questioned why I was never
contacted for my side and was told it was
not eBay’s policy to do so; they made the
decision based on the seller’s statements.
Such high-handedness leaves me cold, and
I only buy on eBay when I can get a “bargain”, which are few and far between. It
was a good run, but for me it has pretty
much come to an end. — Roger Rodan

Shipping may make
or break a good deal
Let’s discuss auction houses. With the
inevitable few exceptions, perhaps, what
a comfortable situated lot auction house
owners must be. No wonder antique experts can’t wait to join the gravy train
which charges buyers all the market will
allow, and then creatively some more.
Recently, I purchased a small circa
1740-1760 white, pierced Staffordshire salt
glazed plate with a short hairline from
a long established UK auction house. It
was a live online auction, and I was the
winning bidder at 20 English pounds, or
$33.24. Add the “Premium including VAT”
(value added tax), “Charges,” an additional
“Charges VAT,” and the total rose to $43.11,
a 30 percent increase. But I wasn’t complaining in the least. I knew well before I
bid, there would be auction house fees, etc.
And so, pleased with my purchase, I
contacted a local shipper the auction house
provided. They graciously offered to mail
the plate to me for $106. What?!
I called the auction house again. Another shipper, a short walk from the auction house, offered to ship the small plate
for $88.
One more call to the auction house. I
pleaded my case and the woman agreed
international shipping was a problem. She
agreed to ship the item for $50 as a small
packet that would arrive whenever it arrived. At least it was coming by air.
The $33.24 plate wound up costing
$93.11. Hmm.
On a brighter note, if anyone in the
U.S. has non-reproduction 18th century
Staffordshire salt-glaze pieces they’d like
to sell, please contact me at davideaton@
earthlink.net.

NASA operations manual not uncommon, but valuable
Q
I have an Apollo 11 “Lunar Surface Operations Plan” manual signed by W.H. Wood Jr.,
Lunar Surface Operations officer, and several other
operations officers, dated June 13, 1969. This is a
final edition from NASA.
– R.M.
Brick, N.J.
A
Your autographed copy of the Apollo 11 Lunar
Surface Operations Plan is certainly an interesting piece of history, and one that is coveted by
aerospace collectors. These operations plans do come
up at auction quite a bit more than you might think.
Q
I subscribe to your magazine, and I have a question. I am
needing some information about a doll I purchased. It is an
all-leather body with cork. On the chest of doll is a label that says
“jdk germany 1/2 cork”. On back of dolls head, it says, “dep 154.14”.
I looked up the information, and I’m not sure if it is a Kestner doll
or maybe a Kley Hahn. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I’m also in need of a good doll doctor in the area.
– C.S
Punxsutawney, Pa.
A
Your doll is indeed a Johann Daniel Kestner Jr. (JDK)
doll from the early 1900s. Unfortunately, your query
was not accompanied by a photograph, and the information
you provided did not include the doll’s height, condition, type
of eyes, type of mouth (molded mouth – open, closed, teeth
visible), presence or absence of original clothing or wig – all
very important information when determining value. A few
photographs would probably have been more beneficial than
a description.
The DEP 154.14 identifies the specific mold used to create the
doll’s head and shoulders and does provide the type of informa-
In fact, there are auctions that specialize in

Recent auction records for your particular manual, signed and unsigned by

by the astronauts themselves going for 10
times that amount.
NASA operations plans come up in

tion that is needed to identify the doll without actually seeing
photographs or the doll itself. Based on the mold number, I assume your doll is around 28 inches tall and has a jointed body,
bisque shoulder/head, forearms and hands. This model was also
made with “sleep eyes,” which are eyes that are open when the
doll is upright and closed when the doll is supine.
JDK began producing dolls of wood or papier-maché somewhere around 1816. During the early 1860s, the company began
producing dolls with papier-maché heads coated with wax and
bisque-head dolls. The kid bodies often have a label with a gold
crown and red streamers.

I found an antique bed in my attic, and I was wondering what
it was worth and when it was constructed. The bed has a white
sticker on it that reads “Edison wood products inc. New London WI,

Also, underneath, on the bottom of the headboard is a serial
number that reads “1501”, and someone wrote in pencil, “Maple”. I
am hoping that you may know when this bed was made, how much
it could be worth and anything about this furniture company. Thank

Vintage cowboy guitars strike a
nostalgic chord with collectors
Steve Evans “Plainsman” guitar, 1940, depicts Wild
Bill Hickok on horseback in a forest of
pine trees. This art was fashioned after
a scene from the 1936 Gary Cooper
movie “The Plainsman.”

Early 1940s “Lefty Cowboy on Horse,”
made by Kay and sold through Spiegel.
The cowboy resembles Gene Autry
wearing chaps and a big cowboy hat.
Note original owner’s pick-shaped
initials “O.S.B.”
There was a time when
youngsters dreamed of being
cowboys or cowgirls. Their
desires were fueled by the
action-packed cowboy movies
and fascinating radio shows of
the 1930s through the 1950s.
During that era, big mailorder catalogs offered “cowboy
guitars.” Sears & Roebuck guitars were made by the Harmony Company
and came with stencil-painted art, while
models sold by Montgomery Ward and
Spiegel were made by multiple manufacturers (Kay, Regal or Richter) and featured vivid silk-screen painted artwork. The attractiveness of cowboy guitar art
often has to do with the smallest of details.
Look inside the trailing wagon of the “Pioneer Days” scene. This portion of the art
shows the silhouette of a woman wearing a
bonnet and reading (her Bible?). Maybe she
is praying for protection and courage for
their trip West.
Take a look at the art of the “Singing
Cowboys” guitar. It shows a bright red
campfire with the rest of the scene stenciled
in cream-colored paint. This two-color
scene appears to be illuminated by the fire
during the night. It’s really beautiful!

was made of birch, a wood
often used for making
cowboy guitars.
The guitars shown in this
article were made in America,
but cowboy guitars were also
produced in Canada, Australia, Germany,
Holland and South Africa.
Interest in cowboy guitars declined
around 1955 when Elvis Presley and rock
& roll music hit the stage. Some people
actually painted over the artwork of their
cowboy guitars or simply discarded them.
Today, cowboy guitars are usually not
playable because of their advanced age, but
some nostalgic folks choose to hang them
on their walls to artfully remember the
good old days.

was better known for having a

was available on a dark green guitar.
Steve Evans entered the retailing business in 1975 at the age of 18 by
opening the Jacksonville Guitar Center in Jacksonville, Ark. He has been
collecting vintage guitars since then, and has co-authored “Cowboy

Booksamillion.com and Amazon.com). Evans has dedicated one end
of his retail building to the Jacksonville Guitar Museum, displaying his
vintage guitar collection, which, in addition to vintage Fender, Martin
and Gibson guitars, includes more than 150 circa 1930s-1950s Cowboy
Guitars with Western artwork and a few hundred plastic toy guitars.

Fight over World War II-era
tank heading to Calif. court
REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (AP) — A
company headed by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen has fi led a lawsuit in the San
Francisco Bay Area over a World War IIera German tank it says it paid $2.5 million for but never received.
The Panzer IV tank was part of a fleet
of military vehicles amassed by Stanford
University-trained engineer Jacques
Littlefield, who kept them on his family
estate up a winding, forested road above
Silicon Valley. After his death, his family
turned them over to the Massachusettsbased Collings Foundation, which put
some of them up for auction in Portola
Valley in July.
In the lawsuit fi led Sept. 10 in San
Mateo County, Allen’s company, Vulcan
Warbirds, says it reached an agreement
to buy the tank after the auction, but
was later told there had been a misunderstanding and the foundation didn’t
want to give up the tank. By then, it had
already wired the money to the bank account of the company that was handling
the auction, Auctions America, according to the lawsuit.
The lawsuit claims breach of contract
and names Auctions America and the
Collings Foundation.
Collings Foundation CEO Rob Collings told the Palo Alto Daily News (http://
bit.ly/1pWSlM5) the tank was never sold.
The company put it up for auction, but
then reached its fundraising goal without
selling the tank. The foundation was hoping to raise $10 million from the auction
to help build a military vehicle museum
at its Stow, Massachusetts, headquarters.
“So the decision was made by our
trustees that this was core to the collection and we’re going to keep it,” Collings
said.
He said it was his understanding
that Auctions America had returned the
$2.5 million. Auctions America spokeswoman Amy Christie said in an email the
company understands the matter is in
litigation and is working with the parties
to reach a resolution.
There are only five Panzer IV tanks in
the United States, according to Vulcan
Warbirds. The Seattle-based company
leases rare military planes and vehicles
to the Flying Heritage Collection, a museum located in Everett, Washington, the
suit says.
Vulcan Warbirds said in a statement
Auctions America had failed to honor
its agreement, and it looked forward to
restoring the Panzer IV tank and having
it join a Sherman tank and other historic
military aircraft and vehicles at the Flying Heritage Collection. ■

Old friend Marty McReynolds shared many stories and laughs

keep people coming to her class every week for 25 years.
“She was interested in people,” McReynolds said. “She had a

Coveting sewing implements for more than their intended function
By Melody Amsel-Arieli
Antique sewing tools and accessories
reflect the everyday lives of women around
the world. From the Victorian era through
the early 19th century, vast numbers of
these collectibles were found in Great Britain.
“If you were poor, you learned to sew in
a poor school so you had the chance to become a maid who could mend clothes and
domestic linen,” explains Robert Bleasdale,
owner and director of Bleasdales Ltd. “If
you were part of the upper classes, which
regarded sewing and embroidery as desirable social activities, the quality of your
sewing box and the tools it contained reflected your social standing and became the
subject of debate, comparison and envy.”
In America, too, needlework was a critically important skill for all young women
to have, and considered among their most
important accomplishments.
“Many women relied primarily on
hand-sewing for everything from mending
a hem to making their family’s wardrobe,”
adds Laura Johnson, associate curator,
Historic New England. “Everything from
scissors to thimbles, pincushions to sewing
clamps survive in significant quantities and
are highly collectible.”
Unusual late 18th century pin ball,
formed from numerous wool concentric
circles in a variety of colors, 3 inches in
diameter, $340-$830.

Simple sewing boxes, baskets or cloth
sewing rolls usually contained basic tools
like brass thimbles, needles, spools and
steel scissors. More elaborate boxes, crafted
in carved satinwood, rosewood, or rich
with marquetry, for example, may have held
similar tools in ornate gold or silver, along
with needle cases fashioned from silver,
mother-of-pearl, tortoise shell or vegetable
ivory, a material resembling elephant ivory
made from seeds of certain palm trees.
These boxes, depending on their owners
skills, may also have contained specialized
accessories like bone stilettos for punching
eyelets, abalone shuttles for tatting, agate
tambour hooks for bead embroidery or
blunt, silver bodkins for drawing ribbons
through loops or hems.
Colorful Tartanware-patterned silk
winders, needle cases and thread boxes,
as well as figural sewing clamps, primarily
shaped like birds, were also popular. Each
of these accessories currently range from
about $100 to $1,000, depending on age,
material and provenance.
Although antique sewing scissors are
all shaped alike, variations in styles and
material often increase their value. Collectors can expect to pay up to $500 for those
featuring bird figurals, rich gold highlights,
mother-of-pearl detail or floral, scrolled,
beaded or engraved silver handles.
Thimbles, implements worn on thumbs
or fingers to protect from needle pricks,
were favored as far away as France, Germany, Norway, Greece, Turkey, Thailand
and the marshes of Iraq. Though all are
necessarily small and pitted, explains
Bridget McConnel, thimble dealer, expert
and author of “The History of Needlework
Tools and The Story of the Thimble,” thimbles have inspired generations of designers.
Although bronze, silver and gold ones
are the most collectible, many thimbles are
also made of brass, bone, wood, porcelain,
horn and gutta percha (natural latex). Some
are waffled, others smooth. Some are engraved, others enameled or hand painted.
“Though thimble prices generally begin

at $60, gold thimbles set with coral or pearls,
a hands-down favorite, run between $400
and $500 each,” McConnel said. “Ones featuring precious gems like diamonds, rubies
or sapphires might cost anywhere between
$500 and $850 each. But those featuring
gem-messages, like R (ruby) E (emerald)
G (garnet) A (amethyst) R (ruby) D (diamond), are most desirable of all.”
Embroidered, beaded, quilted, knitted
pin-pillows or cushions were in use from
the Middle Ages. Those shaped like plump
tomatoes, however, may have originated in
Victorian times, when many believed that
this red, ripe fruit repelled evil spirits.
As the story goes, when tomatoes were
out of season, people perched improvised
cotton, sawdust or horsehair-filled scarlet
cloth replicas on their mantelpieces –which
evidently provided handy pin and needle
storage, too. Today, many antique pin cushions, which can be found in a wide variety
of materials and designs, and range in price
from $100 to $500. Prices for rare, tightlyknit woolen pin-balls that once draped
from women’s chatelaines, observes Bleasdale, have risen sharply in the last five years.

COVER STORY
Small, faded ones without moth damage,
currently sell for $500 to $700 each. Initialed and dated ones that feature bright,
fresh colors command considerably more.
“But the most highly prized sewing accessories of all,” Bleasdale said, “are those
that were created in Palais Royal, a group
of shops selling fancy goods in the French
Royal Palace from the 1820s. Many, intricately carved in mother-of-pearl with gold
mounts and housed in elaborate pearl and
gilt caskets, are so fragile that they are really miniature works of art rather than
working tools. A Palais Royal pair of scissors, with mother-of-pearl loops carved as
snakes over arms, featuring a jardinière of
flowers on a gold mount and steel blades,
for example, may sell for $700 to $1,000. A
mother-of-pearl thimble in perfect condition with the Palais Royal trademark – an
enamel pansy within a gold oval – sells
for between $800 to $1,200. A 4-inch-long
needle case, elaborately carved as a reclining poodle, currently commands between
$1,000 and $1,300.”
Antique needlework boxes and kits are
extremely desirable as well, especially if
their contents are complete. Etuis, small
wooden, tortoise-shell, gilt, ivory, metal
or leather cases may, in addition to basic
sewing items, also contain snuff spoons,
ear spoons (curettes to clean ears), penknives, toothpicks, tweezers or nail files.
Others feature aide memoires, (cunningly
small “books” to note cherished stitches),
patch boxes (used to create alluring facial
beauty marks) or crystal scent bottles. Etuis
currently draw between $400 and $3,000,
depending on their contents, condition and
provenance.
Necessaires and Lady’s Companions,
small, velvet-lined, intricately tooled leather kits that hold essential sewing tools, were
designed for short journeys. Simple ones
range from around $130, reports Bleasdale,
to more than $1,300 for a 1870s Frenchmade novelty Companion shaped, appropriately, like a railway platform weighing
scale.
Some enthusiasts seek single types of
antique sewing tools like thimbles, pin balls
or needle cases. Some seek ones made from
particular materials like mother-of-pearl,
silver or vegetable ivory. Others concentrate

IN THE NEWS
Shipwreck spurs
diver to go deep
EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ If
loose lips sink ships, it’s a mystery why no
one can explain the story behind a shipwreck off the bank of the Connecticut River.
Officer Woodrow Tinsley said he was
on an exercise with the police department’s
dive team when he kept hearing talk of a
shipwreck right off the shore of Great River
Park in East Hartford.
“Everyone on the team kept talking
about this shipwreck,’’ Tinsley said, “so I
asked around, and maybe 10 people who
worked for the town knew about it. I had no
idea it was there.’’
Tinsley is an avid diver outside his work
on the dive team, he said, even operating his
own dive training business, New England
Ski and Scuba in Vernon. The news of the
wreck piqued his interest, spurring him
to take the plunge and investigate it on his
own.
Tinsley said the vessel, a schooner that
he has estimated to be about 85 feet long, is
partially buried in the river bottom and has
no immediately visible identifying markers.
But it’s likely the ship isn’t as old as some
of the discovered items would indicate, Tinsley said.
According to one report from a Riverfront Recapture ranger, the story of the ship
dates back to the 1970s.
“The story goes that it went down in
Wethersfeld Cove in the early 1970s, and the
owner resurfaced it and brought it to East
Hartford, where he anchored it in Great
River Park,’’ Tinsley said. “That’s where it
went down again.’’
Instead of recovering the ship for a second time, the Army Corps of Engineers
weighed it down so it wouldn’t float down
the river, Tinsley said.
Tinsley said that although he’s eager to
identify the wreck, as a diver, the journey is
just as important as the destination.
“Divers spend their whole careers looking for shipwrecks, and here we have one in
our back yard,’’ he said. “It’s a big deal. You
get to be an amateur archaeologist. And
once we find out, it’ll be a neat thing for the
town.’’ ■

be held Nov. 14-15 at Bertoia Auctions.
It is expected to be the first of two or
possibly three auctions devoted to the Berry
collection, which also features cast-iron
horse-drawn toys and early American tin
and cast-iron bell toys.
“Few collections are on par with Max’s,”
gallery owner Jeanne Bertoia said. “In
terms of rarity and historical significance, it
ranks among the very best collections of the
past 30 to 40 years.”
The mechanical banks to be auctioned
include several that collectors might only
have the chance to bid on once or twice
in a lifetime, including a circa-1875 J. & E.
Stevens “Preacher at the Pulpit” mechanical
bank, Bertoia said.
Although the lineup of toys for November’s debut sessions is still being finalized,
Bertoia singled a rarity that definitely will
be included: The only known example of
an 1893 Ives cast-iron “Cutter Sleigh” with
original figure.
Not only is this auction a representation
of toy history, it speaks of the impact Berry
has had in the collecting community. He
has been a member of the Antique Toy Collectors of America and Mechanical Bank
Collectors of America, and has served as
the group’s pro bono legal adviser.
“Max is highly respected and very well
liked by his fellow collectors – he’s a superstar of the hobby. Many consider him
a mentor and turn to him for advice and
guidance. He’s also a fantastic storyteller
who remembers every detail behind every
toy purchase he ever made,” Bertoia said.
A limited number of printed catalogs
for this auction are available for $55 each.

‘Progress’ bust heading to market Nov. 4
CHICAGO — A remnant from the iconic “Progress Lighting the Way” weathervane,
which towered over the Chicago skyline for
nearly half a century atop the Montgomery
Ward building, will be offered as part of the
20th Century Decorative Arts auction at
Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Nov. 4.
The copper statute was dismantled into
30 pieces in 1947 and distributed to various
individuals and entities. Among the astute
collectors who were able to obtain one of the
pieces was the David V. Nelson family, who
acquired the bust, which will be offered during the auction.
In 1898, Richard E. Schmidt was hired
to add a tower to the existing Montgomery
Ward building at 6 North Michigan Avenue.
“Progress” was designed by ScottishAmerican sculptor John Massey Rhind and
topped Schmidt’s pyramid form tower. In
her original form, “Progress” was depicted
as a nude, bearing a flaming torch in her
right hand and a caduceus in her left balancing atop a globe.

Pier Antique Show expands, welcoming 400 exhibitors
NEW YORK — The Pier Antique Show is preparing for its biannual show, set for Nov. 22-23. This year’s show returns to the
Hudson River’s Pier 94, where more than 400 exhibitors will display
quality antique furniture, jewelry, decorative and fine arts. The very
popular Fashion Alley will also be present during the show, which is
produced by U.S. Antique Shows.
“As we approach our second year hosting November’s Pier
Antique Show, we’ve received valuable feedback from both dealers
and attendees and plan to make some adjustments to this year’s
show,” says Dan Darby, Emerald Expositions vice president and U.S.
Antique Shows general manager. “We’ve increased the number of
dealers on the show floor by adding 25 new booths this year. This
will diversify the categories available to attendees by providing them
with more options than in previous years. We also plan to expand
our Fashion Alley section, including new dealers for 2014.”
U.S. Antique Shows recently produced a debut video promoting
this popular antique show, which has been serving the antiques and
collectibles community for the past four decades. To view the video,
visit http://ow.ly/BUHPa.
Darby also says that the Pier Antique Show will be host to the
Second Annual Appraisal Day, Nov. 23. In partnership with Skinner Auctioneers & Appraisers, all attendees, with a valid ticket to
the show, are invited to bring one item to be appraised by one of
Skinner’s three expert appraisers. Each appraiser, including one
specifically experienced in antique and vintage jewelry, will provide
an unbiased, expert opinion of the attendee’s collectible or antique.
The show will once again be partnering with the Art Deco Society

of New York. The New York society will have a booth onsite during
show hours and will provide those with an interest in Art Deco information on how to become involved in the organization. The group
will also support the Art Deco exhibitors participating in the show.
From classic and formal antiques to Americana and decorative
arts, modern designs to vintage fashion pieces, the Pier Antique
Show’s versatility has made it an internationally famed shopping
spot for novice and serious collectors, interior designers, fashion
icons and celebrities. Items featured on the show floor include a wide
variety of kitchen and home décor, paintings, antique jewelry, art
glass, ceramics and more.
“The Pier Antique Show has a lot of great dealers. More than
400 dealers fill almost three football fields, and an attendee can find
pieces that range from $5 to in the millions. There are treasures everywhere,” says Paul Haig of Haig’s of Rochester.
Show times are Saturday, Nov. 22 and Sunday, Nov. 23 from 10
a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is $20 and is valid for reentry both show
days. Children under 16 are free when accompanied by an adult.

IN MEMORIAM
Geets Vincent
continued from page 20
She also worked at learning to play the piano, and she savored
a trip to the casino. Recalled friend Tom Graves, a San Francisco
photographer, “She taught me her system, which wasn’t much of a
system, at the slot machines.”
Graves said Vincent’s editing help was essential to his newly released book on second-generation Japanese-American veterans of
WWII, “Twice Heroes”.
“She took every story seriously,” he said.
Vincent’s heartbroken friend and caregiver, Walpole, said, “From
my husband to my grand nieces, we all thought of her as the wise
elder of the family. I’m gonna miss my Mama Geets.” ■

Behind the Gavel
continued from page 12
For example: if you’re selling a pair of
lacquered brass candlesticks, a feature is
“the brass has been lacquered”. I know
what the benefit of lacquering is, and you
probably do, too; but does your customer? Maybe, maybe not. But to say to the
customer “this brass has been lacquered
(feature) so you won’t have to polish it as
often (benefit)” tells them that owning
this product won’t take up much of their
time. Now, you have given the customer
both an objective and subjective reason
to buy the candlesticks.
What if every other candlestick sold
in your city is lacquered? It makes no difference at all to your sales presentation,
because you can bet that no other dealer
is mentioning the benefits of lacquering. A competitor of mine sold Sohmer
pianos, and Sohmer, as part of their
product presentation, stated that their
pianos were assembled using resorcinol
glue. Resorcinol is a very strong, waterproof, high-temperature-proof glue that
provides excellent wood bonding. Every
manufacturer in the piano business used
resorcinol glue, but Sohmer dealers were
the only ones talking about it.
I can’t tell you how many shoppers
would come into my store and ask “is
this piano made using resorcinol glue”?
My competitor was selling benefits, and
benefits were what the customers were
remembering, rather than the product
features.
Stating a product’s benefits can be
especially effective when used in online product descriptions. Most written
product descriptions focus on features
(facts). If you want your descriptions to
be remembered, don’t mention a feature
without a corresponding benefit.
The 4 C’s used by Sell Check and P2Pi
to improve retail performance aren’t new
techniques; they are tried-and-true sales
techniques.
The reason they make such radical
improvements in a retailer’s sales is that
retailers (and athletes, craftsmen, artists
and businessmen) sometimes ignore selling basics.
And when one’s game is off, the first
thing to do to correct performance is to
get back to basics.

inches: $4,000.

Chessboard salvaged from Titanic checks $16K
LYNBROOK, N.Y. — An intricately crafted
chessboard made from wood retrieved from the
wreckage of the legendary ocean liner RMS Titanic topped the roughly 700 lots offered at Philip
Weiss Auctions’ Advertising, Books, Military,
Ocean Liner and Historical sale.
With a selling price of $16,385, including
buyer’s premium, the chessboard accounted for
more than 8 percent of the auction’s $200,000 in
total sales.
The 18-by-18-inch chessboard was crafted by
William Parker a carpenter aboard the Minia. The
cable ship had been sent to recover bodies from
the Titanic, which sank after striking an iceberg in
April 1912. Parker retrieved wooden debris as well
as victims, and he used the wood to fashion several pieces, including the mahogany, oak and pine
chessboard that had been displayed at the Manitoba Museum of the Titanic in Canada for years.
The No. 2 lot was a block of 15 unused tickets
for The Beatles’ last U.S. concert performance at
San Francisco’s Candlestick Park in 1966. The
event failed to sell out, and show producer Tom

Diamond, Columbian emerald jewelry rules auction
CHICAGO — A 4.18 Columbian emerald and diamond ring
that sold for $18,112 including buyer’s premium topped more than
850 lots at Direct Auction Galleries’ summer sale.
The 18-karat gold ring’s drawing power came from its featured
stone. Colombian emeralds are said to be the finest because of their
unique occurrence in that country’s sedimentary rock, and the
chemical evolution that results.
The ring set the tone for the auction, as jewelry dominated the

Pair of Colt Dragoons hit the mark with $54,000 bid
DENVER, Pa. — Eager collectors
lined up outside Morphy Auctions’ gallery before the Firearms Auction this
summer, waiting for their chance to snap
up antique weapons.
A total of 1,038 lots were offered, and
sales totaled $744,000; all prices include a
20 percent buyer’s premium.
“There were some very desirable Colts
in the sale, especially the 1857 Colt Walker Type 3 Dragoons, which sold within
estimate for $54,000,” said Dan Morphy,
president and founder of Morphy Auctions. “The guns were special because
they had consecutive serial numbers and
were purchased in the same order directly
from Colt.”
A pair of new, unfired .357 caliber
Colt “Snake Eyes” pistols sold for $13,200.
One of the guns was stainless, while the
other was blued. Both included their
original boxes and were graded in Near

Mint condition.
A variety of rifles also were offered in
the sale, including a Winchester Model
1886 .50 Express manufactured in 1906,
which brought $11,400.
The top-finishing lot among shotguns
was a Beretta Model S687EELL 16-gauge
designed for pigeon shooting. Together
with an extra barrel and its box, case
and accessories, the gun reached $4,800.

Finishing closely behind the Beretta was
a Winchester Model 42 .410 gauge shotgun, which sold for $4,500, nearly triple
its high estimate.
The top pistol in the sale was a Colt
Model 1902 .38 caliber Standard Military
Automatic — complete with its original
box — in fine condition. It was bid to
$5,100. Another Colt, a .22 caliber revolver made in 1931 and known as a “Banker’s
Special,” was offered together with a Colt
factory letter and sold for $4,200.
Morphy Auctions’ next Firearms
auction is slated for Dec. 20. To learn
